0/30/0 is the best mastery page to run as top lane Mundo with the season 4 masteries, every mastery works good on him and you take everything except for Tough Skin because you're not jungling and I don't take Runic shield either because it only regenerates after dying

Summoner Sets

Primary Set
Usual setup, allows you to play more aggressive, I take ignite like 90% of the time because it allows you to secure kills easier in lane and in lategame teamfights it just makes the enemy ad carry lifesteal less or get healed less by allies.
Teleport & Flash
So I've played a fair amount of games with teleport. I take teleport when I feel like I won't be able to kill my lane opponent or I need to play defensively e.g. against riven. I also take teleport if I feel like I will be able to teleport gank bot lane once I hit 6, this also allows you to splitpush more effectively and have more dragon control.

Who in the world are you?

I'm Bunzi. I was platinum ranked in season 1, triple diamond season 2, triple challenger season 3 and at the moment I'm for the fifth/sixth time or so in Challenger solo queue league on EUNE, and in Diamond on EUW on my smurf, Bunzi Jr. This is also my first guide. I have mained Rumble since season 1, and since he got hit by the nerf bat, I figured I needed a new OP champion. So I went and searched through the champion list, wondered about things such as Skarner top but came to the conclusion that I wanted to play something fun, and something that wins when he pleases.
I was literally at 70 points in Diamond 1. Started playing Mundo whenever I got the chance. And a 20 winstreak later, I have 170 points in challenger.
My image doesn't show the 20 wins because I didn't think I would manage to get one, and hadn't planned on making a guide, so I took the first screenshot when I was on a 14 win streak.
I have also started to stream on certain occasions mostly during weekends http://www.twitch.tv/bunzilol

Masteries

I always run 0/30/0 in season 4. They added really good masteries that work extremely well for Mundo; Recovery, Veteran Scars+Juggernaut, Oppression, Swiftness, Perseverance , Second Wind and Legendary Guardian. The most noticable ones are Perseverance and Second Wind, Juggernaut and Legendary Guardian there after. Perseverance and Second wind allow you to get even MORE regeneration than you already have, which already is insane, Perseverance is so great in lane that it's really unvaluable, every 5 seconds you get back 3% of your missing health, this is really good with the 38 health regen you start the game off with.
So after they removed the 9 point magic penetration from offense, you don't really gain anything from that tree anymore except if you'd want to go for the AD, which you don't really need. 2 Points in block, recovery and enchanted armor, 1 in unyielding, 3 in veteran scars, 1 oppression, 1 juggernaut, 3 hardiness, 3 resistance, 3 perseverance, 1 swiftness, 1 reinforced armor, 1 evasive, 1 second wind, 4 tenacious, 1 legendary guardian.

Runes

So the runes are pretty much the magic. Hybrid penetration reds, scale extremely well with Mundo's kit. They give the most penetration out of all the runes, pure magic pen or pure armor pen give less stats than hybrid pen. Armor yellows are pretty standard for every champion in the game, magic resist blues, scaling or not scaling, I use flat magic resist (12 at level 1) just because I like being powerful early. And the quintessences I use are Health regeneration. They are the most important part about your rune page. They are extremely good and are very undervalued. I use them on very many champions, for every minute you stay in lane you regenerate 97.2 health, which really is a lot in the long term, especially if you dont recall untill about 7 minutes in when you have your ultimate, or even longer.

Summoner Spells

On my top lane Mundo I run Flash and Ignite. Flash is my favourite summoner spell in the game, because it has the most variety out of them all, it can be used defensively and offensively. I have ignite as my second spell because it allows for the most aggression in lane in the early game and for taking out AD carrys who have lifesteal in lategame.

Teleport is your second best option for a summoner to combo with flash. Use it to teleport back to lane against hard opponents or to teleport bot lane to a ward behind the enemy duo and just ping like crazy showing your team you are coming. It's very unlikely that the enemies will be able to run away because you are behind them and have ultimate which gives you a ghost summoner spell so you outrun them and slow them.

Ghost can be used instead of flash. However I look at flash as a superior spell. Your ultimate already works like a ghost summoner spell. Flash is also able to get you over walls instantly and gets you instantly to a target rather than having to run to it.

For jungling obviously take smite

Exhaust can work as a replacement for ignite, if your team has enough ignites you can take an exhaust to reduce an enemy carry's ability damage, attack speed and damage.

Heal or Barrier could work as a replacement of ignite. Building locket you already have a shield, so I would recommend Heal over Barrier if you want to play with one, it also scales on Spirit Visage's +20% healing done.

Don't take these. You shouldn't take cleanse because your champion barely gets crowd controlled with 35% tenacity from Golem Spirit and 30% from your Burning Agony. Don't take revive because you shouldn't be thinking about dying.

Skills

Passive: Adrenaline Rush

Good passive, not much gameplay around it. Helps out with your early game health regen and gives you 30% of a warmog's health regeneration passive

Q: Infected Cleaver

I rank this up to level 5 the first in every game. The 280 minimal damage is very good for taking down low health targets and the 25% of current health damage is just insane versus high health targets or full health carries. This is what makes Mundo Mundo, your bread and butter. This is what you will throw to initiate fights or to poke before engaging. In lane it's your most reliable poke because it doesn't draw minion aggro and it has quite a far range. It's hit box is also quite weird. You often hit champions who seem to be standing behind a minion but actually hits them, takes practice to get a feel for when it's possible.

W: Burning Agony

I max this 2nd. It's a 2nd way of you dealing magic damage and waveclear. You can farm waves behind towers once you rank it up a bit. The CC reduction is also just invaluable. In fights you want to have this ability turned on permanently. It reduces crowd control effects on your champion by 30%, and it stacks multiplicatevely with tenacity and the Tenacious mastery. Always have it turned on when you are getting crowd controlled while getting chased. You can turn it on right before the Nunu snowball hits, and turn it off again after it hits. Hidden trick: You can activate it and immediately deactivate to still deal the damage but you don't lose any HP from it, as long as you deactivate it quickly enough

E: Masochism

So this is your free B.F. sword while the rank is only at level one. Use it to help you last hit, take down turrets, and punch champions in the face! I max it last because the damage from Q and W are very high and the CC reduction from W I feel like is worth more

R: Sadism

Always rank your ultimate up whenever possible, but it gets maxed 3rd. With spirit visage this ability just becomes monstrous. The cooldown is so short with 40% CDR, or 33 seconds. The speed boost should not be undervalued, always pop your ultimate at the beginning of fights to go chase the enemy carries or to get it back up half a minute later. Many people are surprised by the cooldown so make sure when you are getting chased to run into a brush, pop the ulti so they can't see, and wait for them to come

Skill Order

My skill order for every game is R>Q>W>E.
I start by putting a point in Q, then on level 2 I put one in E, 2nd point in Q on 3, and on 4 I put in my W. From there on it's just R over Q over W over E.

Almost every champion in the game ranks up his ultimate whenever possible and Mundo is no exception. Increasing your max health regen from 40(48%)->50(60%)->60(72%)%. In the parenthesis I put your max health regen once you have a Spirit Visage. So having a 72% max health regeneration, not counting baron buff or base regeneration, is pretty much just insane. And on a 33 second cool down with Spirit visage, spirit of the ancient golem + blue buff/brilliance elixir.

Infected Cleaver deals the most damage out of your spells especially on top lane where targets tend to get rather tanky, dealing that 25% of current health and slowing by 40% they are very effective at both chasing enemies doing massive damage or throwing them at people while kiting. Good trick in lane when harassing with infected cleavers is positioning your self behind a minion that takes 1 auto attack to die, and as soon as your auto attack goes off -> throw a cleaver towards the enemy champion. This is partly mindgames because the enemy just sees you last hitting and they hear the sound of an auto attack and aren't prepared for a cleaver to the face, you need to do this next to instantly though.
Your Infected Cleavers are going to be on a 2.4 second cool down with the cool down reduction build. That means -> spam those babies, both before fights as well as in fights.

Burning Agony is the ability I max 2nd. It isn't affected a lot by the 40% Cool down reduction, but allows you to activate it and deactivate it more often for popping it to reduce CC effects about to hit you. If you build sorcerer's shoes in a game they make your Q and W deal more damage because they deal magic damage. Your Burning Agony has a base damage of 95 per second while you sacrifice only 30. It also deals more damage once you have a Haunting Guise/Liandry's Torment, as it scales with a 0.2 AP ratio.
When last hitting under your own tower, you can pop your W on the caster minions dealing damage once and deactivate the ability immediately, so that they are hurt by 35 dmg, but you actually don't take any. Then the tower makes you only need one auto attack to get the last hits on caster creeps, rather than two or having to pop your E/Q making you lose more health.

Masochism is the ability I max last. For some reason people think I max it when they ask me what I max. Masochism basically becomes your other part of damage other than magic damage late game. It's your "Free B.F. Sword" on rank one and your free fully stacked Bloodthirster on rank 5 (does not include being on low health). Lets say you are at around 10% health on level 18 with 2 champions bashing on your head. You pop your E, it is going to give you 100 damage from base damage, and another 90 for your % of current health. For every 1% you're missing, you gain 1 damage. But on rank 1 it's only at for every 1% you're missing, you gain 0.4 damage.
With the cool down reduction build, you can have this up PERMANENTLY.

Mundo has so short cool downs, abuse them!

Item Builds

You start with Doran's Shield, 1 health potion and warding totem

First buy: dorans-shieldhealth-potionwarding-totem

Against every single champion in top lane that deals mainly magical damage, you rush Spirit Visage
spectres-cowlspirit-visage

If you are against a champion that deals mainly physical damage, rush either sunfire cape or ninja tabi if the enemy deals mostly damage from physical attacks

sunfire-capeninja-tabi

Spirit of the Ancient Golem doesn't give you any resistances. It gives you 350 health, 10% CDR, 14 health regen, 35% cc reduction, the increased damage versus monsters and the extra bounty. You could rush this in matchups against champions like Irelia or champions that have only a chance of killing you in ganks. The health and CC reduction will help when getting ganked because you will be next to immune to CC with your W turned on. You COULD try going this item first if you think you can farm the jungle pretty often or if the enemy has like jungle rammus or fiddlesticks with their 3 second taunt/fear

spirit-of-the-ancient-golem

I must admit I am unsure against which champions you can rush this item versus. I most of the times build this item as my last item of the core (sunfire, golem spirit, spirit visage) because I feel like the resistances from sunfire and spirit visage are superior.

So now for your core items, in no special order.

Slaughter time
spirit-visagesunfire-capespirit-of-the-ancient-golemsorcerers-shoes OR ninja-tabi
Against range ad like nidalee or jayce, or you just want health and health regen, go for 1-2 Doran's Shields dorans-shield

If the other team hasn't already surrendered, you can consider buying any of the items below

If game ain't over:
For gibbing people faster and poking liandrys-torment
For armor randuins-omen OR thornmail OR guardian-angel
For Magic resist banshees-veil OR guardian-angel OR locket-of-the-iron-solari

You don't need much more magic resistance than spirit visage and from your runes and masteries. But chances are someone in your team hasn't built a locket of the iron solari already but he should have, so you can do it. The team with a Locket usually wins if the other team doesn't have one. There aren't many available choices for magic resist on tanks these days, health is more of a solution and you sure have it.

Reasoning behind not going warmogs: With the 3 core items: sunfire, spirit visage and golem spirit, you already have ~3k health and around 150 armor with tabis and 110 mr. The way Health and resistances work in this game is that for every 1k health, 75 of each resistances make the best defense so at 3k health the best way to compensate is to have 200 armor and 200 mr, but it can't usually be done. Warmogs would just be a bit over the top as you also gain health from Liandry's and a Randuins. With Liandrys and a Randuins + elixir of fortitude, you will have +4k health.

So after building sunfire, spirit visage and spirit of the ancient golem, you should consider which items are best next. If you need more magic resistance you should most of the times buy Banshee's Veil, but if you need armor on the same time you should get Guardian Angel.
Hidden trick with Guardian Angel: If you pop your ultimate right before the GA is popped, you regenerate health while respawning for 4 or 5 seconds.
If you want to get more damage you should get either a Thornmail or Liandry's. Thornmail if the enemy ADC is fed or they have a lot of physical damage dealers, and Liandry's if you don't need more survivability. Liandry's gives the most damage output.
So let's say you're up against a full ad team and maybe an ap support. Then you don't really need to build magic resistance and instead you can go for Ninja Tabi, Sunfire, Thornmail, Randuin's, Spirit visage and Frozen Heart. Spirit visage + frozen heart allows you to get 40% CDR

Early Game

Now, if you have the same runes and masteries as I have, and you stat with rejuv bead, you will have ~30 health regen on LEVEL ONE. That's more than half a health potion running permanently. Most laners you will encounter only have under 10 to about 15 in some cases if they also run health regen.
Your early game is all about either being aggressive, or outsustaining your opposite laner. You can do a level 2 cheese with Q+E because not many people expect your damage. With E only level 1 you get a free b.f. sword and more if low hp. On level one your goal is to farm when you can and throw a trophy/cleaver/suitcase at your enemy. If you manage to hit 2-3 cleavers on level one you can go all in on level 2. Early game is just the 'Calm Before The Storm'. Remember to ward though
I reccomend using your ultimate to stay in lane longer.
I try every game almost to go steal enemy blue buff around 7:15-7:30 to get the extra cool down reduction.

Mid Game

Now you should be building your core items, Sunfire , Spirit Visage and Spirit of the Ancient Golem. For boots you either go Sorc shoes for OP cleaver and burning agony damage, or go Ninja tabi and doran's to play it safe and have a safe lane versus auto attack damage dealing/range champions like Jayce/Bruiser Nida.
Now you should be deciding whether you want to push all day long, or go fight for dragons and towers on bot/mid. If dragon is dead and your enemy top laner is on top, you should be on top. Mundo is very good at taking down towers because he has E to deal more damage to them, and W to clear out enemy minions for your minions to deal damage to the tower.
After you have 30% CDR from visage and golem spirit, you should be using your ultimate literally every time it's up. It's back up so fast you will every single time surprise your enemies. Try to steal enemy blue buff at around 12:30-13:00 it should respawn and every time after that you should have it warded at around 18 minutes, 23-24 minutes e.t.c.
If you get blue buff with Spirit visage and golem spirit you cap your CDR at 40% which makes your ultimate on a rediculously low cool down

Late Game

Your primary role in late game is to soak up damage (tank), and go for the enemy team's carries if you get the chance. In one game I had 15 kills, 8 assists and 1 death, but I had 55k damage taken. You need to use your ultimate in every engage, as soon as possible, because the chances are you will be able to use it again. One story is when my team was pushing for an inhib, I used ult, got inhib, 3 of my team died and 2 of the enemy team, I ran into the jungle, got my ult back, popped it in a brush. Killed 2 of the chasers and the 3rd managed to run to base, the all chat was spammed with WTF's, MUNDO OP's, THAT CD e.t.c.
REMEMBER TO TURN YOUR W ON. Your Burning Agony makes you next to immune to crowd control, it's pretty redicilous.

Team Fights

In every fight or game you need to decide what you think is more important for the situation.

a) You can go for the enemy AD or AP carry and leave your carries behind
b) You can go into a middle of a fight and throw cleavers at the closest target and soak up most of the damage (might sometimes be either of the enemy carry)
c) Peel for your carries (defend them). Stick to your fed AD carry and throw cleavers dealing massive percentage health damage on that high health stacked, armor stacked and no magic resist tank chasing your AD carry

With time you will be able to read the situations better and just get a natural feel for what you need to do in a fight. You might have a Vayne or an Ezreal with a support such as Janna or Alistar who can easily crowd control the champion that tries to go near their AD carry, so you should be putting pressure on the enemy carries. In the late game team fights you are literally like 2 tanks. You will more than likely regenerate more than 100% of your max health during a fight, and if it lasts longer or you are chased for your ultimate to come back up, you heal for 144% only from your ultimate, making your enemies have to deal more than 250% of your health to even come close to killing you.

If you are versus ad carries with healing debuffs (grieving wounds) -> Tristana, Miss Fortune or Varus, you should not rush for them until their healing debuff is down. What you do is you rush into them, scare them literally by running to them or throwing a cleaver, pop your e and w to make them even more scared, until they finally use their healing debuff and then you start running away. Try to save your ultimate and use it when that grieving wounds debuff is down, either from ignite or ad carry spells.

It just takes practice to be able to read the situations better, so keep playing!

Jungling

This chapter needs to be updated for season 4

If your team doesn't let you get top lane, you should jungle. Running 2/28/0 masteries and the same rune page as I run on top lane

When jungling I put in W then Q then E then Q and follow the R>Q>W>E. Having that Q maxed allows for insane clear speeds when counterjungling or just taking your own camps and dragons. When they changed the jungle monsters to have more max health, I started to max cleaver first when jungling instead of burning agony, and it works better I feel. You get more damage and poke when ganking, and good big monster clear speed.

Start whereever your bot lane starts. If you are blue side you should start on red, and if you are purple side you start on blue.

Blue side: Start on wraiths, ask bot to help if they're not doing double golems. Then go for the red buff, ask for a smiteless pull from bot lane. From red you go to the blue buff. Throw a cleaver over the wall before you see the ancient golem, and by the time you are on the other side, it's back off cool down! Use your smite on blue buff, and after clearing blue you hit level 3.

Purple/red side: Start on wolfs, ask bot to help if they're not stopping enemy double golems. Then go for the blue buff, ask for a smiteless pull from bot lane. From blue you go to the red buff. Throw a cleaver over the wall before you see the ancient lizard, and by the time you are on the other side, it's back off cool down! Use your smite on red buff, and after clearing red you hit level 3.

Then you take a look at the minimap and either think like the other jungler and go to the lane you assume he's going on, or you choose a lane your self. With time and more gameplay your game knowledge increases. Especially if you play both jungle and in lane. If your enemy jungler is Lee Sin, you know that he's going to gank as soon as he clears his buffs. If your top lane is overextended, it's very likely that the enemy jungler is going top, so you need to go top to countergank, same story if your mid is overextended.

Skins

Now, the best Mundo skin is TPA Mundo, solely because of the BOINK/CLUNK/DUNK sound. The second best Mundo skin is Mr. Mundoverse, because you need to be really buffed to be able to carry 4 people on your back.

Final Comments

27/11/2013 Updated some of the guide in compensation for season 4
Thank you very much for reading this guide, it will help you with owning other players and getting higher into other divisions, I promise. I taught a silver friend the ways of Mundo top, and he got a 8 winstreak with him. If you have any suggestions what I can improve on in the guide, please tell me in the comments, or if you want to share how you completely owned as Mundo top, you are also welcome to do that. Almost noone at this point expects to see mundo top and don't really know what to expect from him in lane. So you need to go out now, and take advantage of that! I haven't really talked much about his counters, because I haven't played that many matches! Also because I don't want you to beat me (I know some high division EUNE players will see this guide) by reading my guide. Feel free to criticise me in the comments. Sorry for every grammar mistake aswell, I'm an Icelander.
Every time you have the time, be sure to taunt your enemys in the all chat, writing things such as: "Mundo kills who he pleases", or try being funny writing "Pornstar Mundo pleases who he pleases". TL:DR act like a really obnoxious kid to make the enemies as angry as possible

I mean to update this guide when I notice new things, add more pictures, or when I want to add the counters, so be sure to check it out later! Don't try to add me ingame because my friends list is constantly 5 people from being full, so again, leave your questions in the comments.

Man, I just happen to watch one of your games on the LoL-client, just coincidence. I have been reading some guides and thought that yours was the best. Have been reading this guide today and yesterday and just love it! Thanks for all the work.

hey bunzi, great guide looking forward to play mundo top since i need a new champ to play, currently stuck at gold 2. But do you still want to buy spirit of the ancient golem after the nerf?

@Bunzi

What do you think about Frozen Mallet? Too expensive? The few games I've had it as mundo it has proven to be quite effective when zeroing in on the enemy adc/everyone else, no one can escape. Also, the ad+hp are a nice addition.

Also, I noticed that your build is very magic dmg oriented, focused on Q and W. What about on hit/ad mundo (mallet)? Items like Wits End or Last Whisper aren't even mentioned here.

Has anyone had any success vs a rumble?
He has been a huge problem for me. I can never seem to beat a rumble. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hey! Nice guide, i also main mundo, but i only play jungle with him. I wanted to try him top also and therefore saw your guide.

One thing i wonder is why you dont build a warmog? I always get warmog first and it goes pretty well!
Maybe you should try it?
