Introduction

Hi. I'm Heartbeat, from the formerly Team MRN. I'm also a high-ELO ranked player, who has three accounts in diamond 1 currently. I've played three roles competitively (mid/ad/support) and i consider myself to be a very versatile player with a good understanding of this game.

What happened to malzahar? The last time we've seen him in competitive play was at Season 1 world championships. Since then he's completely fell off the radar. His ratios and strong and he offers a lot of cc, but what exactly happened to him? I personally think he's an incredibly strong laner, and also a great roaming champion after level 6.. lets talk more about malzahar.

pros:
  • Fast and cheap wave clear using
  • does AOE % maximum hp damage!
  • Has an AOE silence
  • one of the best CC ultimates in the game!
  • voidlings! (good against dueling/pushing, as well as clearing the jungle)
  • BIG DMGS due to good scalings

cons:
  • not very mobile
  • ultimate is VERY VERY easily interrupted - you can self interrupt as well
  • close range

Marks
Spell penetration marks are the best in slot. You want to try and get marks that increase your damage the most, and spell pen marks does that job.

Seals
If i'm picking malzahar blind, i normally take armor seals (as well as mr glyphs) for the increased defenses early game. Without it, if you have to face AD mids or the occasional 2v1 mid, then these are STAPLE for your early game survival. ofcourse, if you're confident that you won't need the armor, taking mana regen seals are strong to help you pretty much mana sustain yourself without blue buff for the whole game.

Glyphs
I like taking MR glyphs here. These lets you duel with the enemy AP caster, so that you will be able to withstand some harass while still harassing them. Because malzahar is rather shortrange caster, you want to have some basic defenses.
Alternatively, you can also use AP per level glyphs if you're not worried about having MR for laning phase and would like better scaling.

Quints
AP quints are the best for quints, because it lets you have a huge amount of kill potential in the earlier levels, as well as help you push because your spells will do more damage. I can't imagine playing malzahar without these bonus AP in your early game!

9 Utility
As an AP carry, your main goal is to do as much damage as possible. Taking 21 points in the offense tree will give you maximum damage output from masteries. In fact, this mastery page is very standard for most AP mages, in terms of the 21/0/9 tree.

9 points in the utility tree will give you free mana regen, little movespeed, cooldown reduction on your summoner spells, and increased buff duration. Every single one of them are really useful!

Summoner Sets

Primary Set
Flash is a staple summoner spell for malzahar. Flash can be used offensively or defensively, and again because malzahar isn't a long range caster AND hes not very mobile, flash is all the more valuable. Late game you will be able to catch stray enemies using flash and your ultimate, and if you ever get caught face checking, flash will get you to safety (hopefully!).

Ignite is also very staple for malzahar because you are incredibly a strong laner, and this well let you grab kills when you feel like they're low enough. Not to mention with the point in your offensive mastery tree using ignite will give you 5 free ap when it is on cooldown... OP! ANOTHER NOTE ON IGNITE: don't try to ignite during your ult, because it will stop your ultimate.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Default Starting Build
2
The best starting build for Malzahar is the Doran's Ring. Why? Because of the mana sustain that you get from using your E on creeps, you won't be running out of mana as long as you don't spam your other (Q, W) abilities randomly. Doran's ring also gives you a decent boost in health, so along with your two potions you should last quite a bit - hopefully until you can afford an item on your back.

yellow trinket is preferred at the start, because you really won't have much time to use the red trinket to go out of lane and erase a ward. Use the extra ward!
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items

Your mid game goals
preferably on your first back, you want go for these items which will aid you before you start saving your money for big items.

You will want your as soon as possible. By having additional early magic penetration your spells will be that much stronger, with the extremely high base damage that malzahar's spells already deal.

- I personally like these the best. You will get even more mana back by killing units along with your E, and the additional HP+AP that you get is sweet. HP is strong on malzahar because he is not mobile, and you are relatively short range compared to the popular long range ap carries like lux or orianna.

- I personally don't like this. Will not make you any stronger and malzahar is not a champion that you will run out of mana easily on if you lane properly. I've seen a couple malzahar players rush tear, but don't get this.

- A pretty decent item if you're facing a harass heavy AP mid. Pales in comparison to double doran rings because it does not provide any offensive stats, but if you're looking to just stay in lane forever and you're not able to get blue buffs, these are OK. It also doesn't help the fact that athene's unholy grail, the upgrade, is not that great on malzahar because of the little AP it provides.

Altight. Now let's talk about the BIG items that you'l be getting on malzahar going into the late game! Remember, you want to be getting mostly BIG DAMAGE items. Because half of malzahar's abilities are AOE, and two are targeting spells it's much more efficient to go for as much damage as possible. Cooldown reduction isn't a priority because your E does not stack on the same target.

- ah. The one item that boosts your AP. This item is obviously a core item, it will basically.. give you the BIG DMGS.

- Very strong if they have multiple AD champions. Definitely a core going into late game because you can pull off crazy flash initiates, and then use the active on this item to make huge plays. Again, malzahar is a relatively close range caster so the active as well as the huge amount of AP it gives is sweeeeeet.

- You should be getting this as your 4th/5th item. Early void staff is EXTREMELY strong on malzahar because of the % maximum health magic damage his W does, as well as your... super high ratios and base damage. Sometimes if i don't need the defensive option of getting an hourglass i just rush this after a deathcap.

- Another strong item on malzahar. Your active is 750 range, which is higher than your ultimate's range. So by using this as well as your spell combo you will be able to one shot pretty much.. anything, maybe even tanks. I try to always fit this item somewhere in my build going into late game.

- i guess the people that start tear of the goddess will get this item. Sure the active is really nice and the amount of ap does get pretty high. But then again tear is such a weak item to have early/mid game for malzahar, so i don't recommend trying to go this item path.

- Add's slow to all your spells. Your E will proc the full slow, and your AOE spells will proc the lesser slow. Also gives you a very decent amount of HP. I highly value HP as a stat to get on malzahar because of your close range spells and being vulnerable while casting your ultimate. Core item, but you don't specifically need to rush this item. Just adds more cc +decent damage to your spells, and also makes you tankier. solid item.

- Combined with an early haunting guise makes for a very strong combination of spell penetration mid game. I specifically like to rush this item if i'm against double ap, because this item gives you a lot of mr. Of course, you should always try to combine this with a haunting guise.

- extremely strong early game when it is still at haunting guise, and not so great late game when you upgrade it into this item. Synergizes well with rylais with the double damage on your passive damage, but does not give you much ap and late game there are much much stronger items than this.

- Not that strong on malzahar, only gives 60 AP. this item is strong for spam heavy casters, but malzahar is not one of them. So I would avoid getting this item.

/ - You should decide for yourself which trinket to get going into the late game. If you feel like your team is lacking ward coverage, then go for the yellow trinket. If you think you have sufficient ward coverage and you want to be able to help out on clearing areas out so you can catch people with your ultimate, get the red trinket!

There's only one way to skill-up malzahar! let's talk about why this is.

You want to level up at levels 6, 11, and 16 for da big dmgs.

SKILL ORDER >>

You want to be maxing your first no matter what because it is your reliable pushing/harassing ability. From level 3 your E can start clearing all lane creeps with the help of your auto attacks and your voidlings incredibly fast and you will be constantly shoving to the enemy tower, and then looking to farm the jungle or gank. Remember that you can harass AND push using your E at the same time if your opponent decides to stand between lane creeps, and if hes unlucky he will be hit by it.

Next, you want to be maxing your second to increase the damage and the silence duration. You'll also be able to push your lane even faster because you can 1 shot the caster minion at later levels. 3 second silence to your enemies in teamfights can potentially win the teamfight for your team, so this skill should most certainly be maxed second.

Last but not least, you want to max your to pretty much increase the % damage it does. This skills shines especially later the game goes when a lot of people are tankier and have a lot of HP. This skill is still strong at earlier levels, just a lot stronger when the enemy has more hp, which is later into the game. So logically its better to max this last.

Skills

Summon Voidling
Aftering casting 3 spells, your next spell will summon a voidling for 21 seconds, and it gets stronger after time. It prioritizes targets in this order: the target you use your ultimate on, then the target thats hit with the most recent E, and then the target you're auto attacking.

This voidling is very useful when you're trying to push the wave. It will hit the target you use your E on, and since your E moves on to the next target after the first one dies, you can just continue to push+farm this way. Not to mention it adds a bit of extra damage to your spell combinations, and when you have a powered-up voidling when you use your E on an enemy champion they will fear for their life and run away (otherwise they will die!).

Note: you can charge your passive in your fountain by using your Q and W spells (you should use your Q 3 times in fountain right when the game spawns so you can walk into lane with your passive ready to rock. Another helpful thing is that your voidlings will follow you into the brush!
Call of the Void
A tricky spell to use, but it summons two gates in a horizontal line from you that will silence and damage enemies that stand between them. This spell is tricky because there are 2 damage lines from both gates, and if the enemy is standing on only one side of the gate they will only take half damage(but still the same amount of silence) So you will need to cast this so that your target is standing right in the middle so that both your gate lines will hit your target.
Null Zone
Creates an AOE zone that will deal % maximum health magic damage to enemies that stand on it every second. This skill is pretty much what makes malzahar so strong scaling into late game because he can shred down tanks by taking out their maximum hp. If you combine this with your ultimate and other CC champions, this ability has really strong synergy with a lot of CC aoe spells.
Malefic Visions
You infect a target, dealing damage every half seconds, ticking 8 times for a total of 4 seconds. If it kills the target then it moves on to a nearby unit for full duration, whilst restoring some mana back to malzahar. This is your main pushing ability. The beauty of this ability is that as it kills units, it restores mana back to malzahar so malzahar won't be losing much mana in lane as long as you continue to constantly shove using this ability. It's also a 650 range harassing skill, so you can use this to zone your enemy if you feel like you're a lot stronger.

Note: Don't cast this on an already infected target! it will only refresh the duration and it will not stack.
Nether Grasp
Supresses a target for 2.5 seconds while dealing damage per half second. Simple yet strong skill, which lets you bring insane amount of pressure to your lane opponent. Also makes malzahar a strong ganker, and catcher in the mid to late game. has good synergy with your W pool, makes for a guaranteed 3 seconds for your opponent to sit in your pool.

NOTEEEEE: REMEMBER NOT TO PRESS OR TOUCH ANYTHING AFTER YOU CAST YOUR ULTIMATE. YOU WILL CANCEL IT AND YOUR ULTIMATE WILL BE WORTH NOTHING. PLEASE DON'T TRY TO IGNITE DURING YOUR ULTIMATE UNLESS YOU USE IT WITHIN IGNITE RANGE, WHICH IS 600, OTHER WISE IT WILL CANCEL YOUR ULTIMATE.

Match-ups

let's talk about some popular matchups for malzahar in the mid lane. i'll rate the difficult from 1(eaisest) to 5(hardest)

- 3 Fairly easy match up, might be dangerous early game if you keep eating her poke and you get charmed. If you stay within your creeps so you're immune to charms, you should be able to out push her. After 6 she will never be able to all-in you because you can just 1 shot her with your W+E+R combo (even if she dodges your Q with one of her ult charges).

- 3 this is a bit tricky. She will just try to afk push, so you will have to do enough damage early game to her so that she won't be able to do that. After 6 is also really tricky because when you have your ultimate you beat her, but when it's off cooldown she beats you. So try your best to keep the lane even and always be trying to harass her and zone her when you can. This is only hard if you make it hard for your self by not punishing her early.

- 2 You can completely crush evelynn in lane, you can just pretty much zone her and she won't even be able to farm. She'll most likely just end up roaming a lot, so make sure you buy a pink everytime you go back, so you will know which direction she will be roaming off to.

- 2 this match up is surprisingly very easy. Don't eat his ranged Q+E harass, you're perfectly fine if you stay a bit behind minions and permanently push using your E. If he ever all-in's you, you will be doing a LOT more damage to him than he will to you, especially after you have your ultimate. Jayce pretty much have to rely on landing his ranged poke to do anything in this lane.

- 1 easy lane, karthus (especially solo queue karthuses) cant apply enough pressure in lane against you. You have a free farm lane, can easily push to tower and roam. you can give him hell when he's farming under tower, just make sure you have at LEAST one side warded and stick to that side. You can stop his ultimate with your ultimate so staying in lane with him isn't a bad idea.

- 4 You have to make sure your voidlings are always up. As long as your voidlings are up you can be auto attacking him and all he will be able to do is Q you and back off. If you can get a big enough lead from early game before level 6, you'll be fine going into late game. However, after 6 he will completely crush you.. Because of his magic reduction passive and his annoying silence he will give you hell after level 6. My advice is to get a lead early, and don't throw it.

- 2 easy lane. Do NOT isolate yourself, everytime he comes up to auto attack a creep you use your E on him and auto attack him out of lane. He will be forced to farm with his spikes, and he will not be ever able to all-in you after 6 because you will just kill him using ultimate.

- 4.5 probably one of the most annoying match-ups for malzahar. Her range is stupidly strong and it's hard to out push her either. If you ever get binded you will get chunked if not die... so my advice is farm until 6, and roam and make use of your ultimate. Good luxes will not be in range for you to use your ultimate on her.

- 2 another easy lane. Nidalee is weak against heavy pushers, and malzahar is one of them. Another thing is she has 0 cc so even if she gets ganks, she will still have not much threat. After 6, she can never go cat form or you can just.. ult her. easy!

- 3 an even match up. She will pretty much try to use her annoying Q pokes at you, but it's pretty easy to dodge them. I don't recommend wasting your mana too much on using your spells on her because she just shields most of the damage. Just keep the lane steady, push using E, and look for a possible opportunity for a kill after level 6.

- 2 You outdamage tf so hard in lane that you can get gold carded + wild carded and still outdamage him with just your E. Pressure him hard in lane, but always watch out for jungler ganks because his stun card + jungler is scary. I recommend starting out with at least 1 ward against a TF. Remember you can also stop his ultimate with your ultimate as well.

- 2 unless zed all-ins you when you blow all your cooldown, you can fight him. Zed's all about outplaying and doing all-ins using ultimate but.. it's hard to outplay 2 target skills and 2 aoe spells. Easy match up! I also recommend getting seeker's armguard a bit earlier, and zhonya's first big item.

Early Game

It's easy to play malzahar early game. Just last hit and use your E earlier levels to trade/harass. Malzahar's kill potential at level 2~3 is actually really strong depending on how much damage you can get on your opponent early. If you feel like you're getting pressured and/or camped by jungler, don't be afraid to pull the creep wave closer to your tower and farm starting from the caster minions (cast E on caster minions and start clearing). Malzahar is fairly safe and do NOT just blindly push on them starting level 1 with no wards. Malzahar is not a mobile champion and you will die so easily to a jungler gank. It is starting from level 5 that malzahar truly shines when you can just use one E to push the whole wave while still maintaining most of your mana pool, and harassing the enemy when the waves pushed to turret.
at 6, generally the easiest/safest thing to do is if they are around 50~60% hp, you can just flash W+E+R+ignite (REMEMBER NOT TO IGNITE DURING YOUR ULTIMATE IF THEY ARE TOO FAR) it will kill your enemy (unless they take barrier wtf).

JUST TRY YOUR BEST NOT TO PRESS ANY THING OR CLICK ANYWHERE AFTER YOU USE YOUR ULTIMATE, OR IT WILL CANCEL.

Mid/Late Game + teamfights

Mid game you should be really strong and applying a lot of pressure to your enemy mid laner. Your ultimate is a huge threat and you can initiate using this spell to assist a jungler gank for an easy kill. If you don't think you can kill your laner, just push the lane and go gank top or bottom. Remember that if you're too far to use E initially when you're going for a fast gank, is to just use your pool (W) and ultimate. That's a 2.5 second Cc that will chunk their HP really hard. If the lane that your ganking for responds correctly it should blow at least a summoner spell if not kill.

You should be warding and trying to catch using your ultimate whenever it is up and ready. Depending on how you use your ultimate will most likely determine if you can carry the game or not. Especially late game try to ward deep into their jungle and catch out their AD carry from farming.

Another thing to note is that when your team is grouped up and positiong for objectives like baron or dragon and you see their tank trying to come with the support to help ward, don't be afraid to just use your skill rotation including your ult on the tank. Your spells are made to shred tanks with the help of your W, and if you have 2~3 more people there it should chunk the enemy tank hard enough that you guys can most likely take the free objective. Of course, if you can catch a carry, then you probably already won. :^)

positioning malzahar in teamfights is the hardest thing. Especially after people start buying Quicksilver Sash to counter your ultimate, it gets hard to know what to do in a team fight. My best advice is to try and combo your W with another AOE CC spell, and cast it on the most dense part of the teamfight. You want to be casting your silence preferably on their AP carry, effectively taking them out for the 3 seconds of silence.. but if you can't just try to hit much people as possible. It's not a bad idea to save your ultimate if you know too many people have QSS's, and just wait for them to use it on another Cc spell so that you can use your ultimate on them. Cast your E as your spam ability during the teamfight, and make sure you don't stack them.

the BEST positioning advice i can give is that try your best to use all your spells at MAX RANGE. other wise you will end up being caught in the fray and it is extremely easy for the enemy to just turn on your if you get a bit too close. good luck! practice makes perfect!

Video guides!

note: this video was recorded in season 3, which means it won't have much explanation for trinket usage. Everything else is still intact, so still watch it for malzahar gameplay demonstration!

Game 1

Played well in lane and the rest of the game, but our other lanes were too far behind, and vayne was just way too fed. my ult gets cancelled ridiculously a lot this game, but im still able to demonstrate some skill combos and how to use his kit in lane. :^) check it out! lost this game though. :<

Game 2

played vs a yorick mid, but i did still beat him in lane by controlling my mana well. Our lanes kept up this game, so i was able to just roll over mid and then roam around top to look for kills! won this game fairly fast. :^)

After actually reading the guide, its good. I would just remove the bits about Tear and Chalice from the opening item section. The are bad picks as you state, but including them in the opening section is confusing people.

I'm glad that a pro player has made a Malzahar guide, since I've always had trouble with him, but I did find a typo.

In your skill order section, you state that Malefic Visions should always be maxed first, but that last but not least, you want to max your Malefic Visions. I believe that you meant null zone. Thank you.

Good guide once again, I really don't get the downvotes, I guess people are pissed off today...

Anyway one note: in theory Rylai's applies the 15% slow even on Malz's E, like it does on Morde's ulti and basically on every DoT spell ( http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Malzahar/Ability_Details ). Ofc it's still totally worth getting it as a 5th/6th item, it's a great item.
