Introduction

Aatorx as a Champ

Aatrox reminds a lot of Tryndamere, even tough they are basically the complete opposite. Both have insane lane survivability if played right, but where Trynda has more tankyness and less damage and where Aatrox has more damage but less tankyness.

But don't get me wrong Aatrox is almost impossible to kill in lane single handed. And if played well (win your lane) you can also easily win a 1v2.

However late game is where most players run into problems with Aatrox. Because i'ts so tempting to only go for high damage items in early game you might find yourself struggling in late game.
Of cause you need to know when to enter a fight, but if all of their team focuses you, you basically die in a second because you're just as squishy as your ad carry (unless you can manage to make use of you're life steal+attack speed combo).

This is kind of an quick introduction of Aatorx. How to properly build and play Aatrox will be explained in later chapters.

Summoner Spells

Are the obvious choice. But choosing [http://www.solomid.net/guide/summoners/teleport.png] instead of [http://www.solomid.net/guide/summoners/ignite.png] is totally viable thanks to Aatrox's ganking potential.

Masteries

For masteries I've found out that running 21/9/0 is obviously the best taking some crit instead of CDR. Even tough both are viable.

Dmg taking Crit Since you'll have a a lot of attack speed crit isn't a to bad of a stat to have.

Dmg taking Cdr

[Experimental] Tank Masteries

Since you'll be focusing on dmg items in the beginning, you might want to take 9/21/0 masteries for increased survivability in late game. (explained in later chapters)

Runes

Going for standard adc runes is what i found working best. However you can vary with either using damage marks or armor penetration marks, as for either scaling magic resist glyphs or flat magic resist glyphs.

Skills

Passive: Blood Well

Explanation:

Whenever Aatrox uses an ability that costs health he stores 100% of that health in his "blood well".
For every 2% health in the blood well Aatrox gains 1% Attack speed.
The amount of health that his blood well can store is 30 + (45 x level).

When you combine Aatrox E with his passive, he is basically unkillable. However if you manage to kill him... SURPRISE.

What Aatrox passive also does is whenever receiving fatal damage Aatrox restores health equal to what he has stored in his blood well + 10.5 + (15.75 x level) over the course of 3 seconds. But note that Aatrox is not unkillable in this state.

His passive isn't affected by CDR.

Q: Dark Flight

Explanation:

Range: 650
Cooldown: 16 / 15 / 14 / 13 / 12
Cost: 10% of current health

Physical Damage: 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+ 60% bonus AD)

Great initiation and escape skill. However i max this last because Q and E are far more important in battle.
You can jump over most walls with this skill, even some that look you can't jump over; for example from tribush to dragon/baron.

I take this a level 2 because it allows me to jump over escape early jungle ganks.

Video of showing walls you can jump over:

W: Blood Thirst

Explanation:

Toggle off:
Cooldown: .5 seconds
Heal: 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 (+25% bonus AD)
Enhanced Heal: 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120 (+75% bonus AD)

Toggle On:
Cooldown: .5 Seconds
Bonus Physical Damage: 60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 200 (+100% bonus AD)
Health Cost On Third Attack: 15 / 23.75 / 32.5 / 41.25 / 50 (+25% bonus AD)

What makes this skill so good is that you can toggle between Blood Thirst and Blood Price without resetting the amount of hits needed.

I max this first because this is what makes Aatrox have incredible sustain and/or incredible damage.

E: Blades of Torment

Explanation:

Range: 1000
Cooldown: 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 / 8
Cost: 5% of current health

Magic Damage: 75 / 120 / 165 / 210 / 255 (+ 60% AP) (+ 60% bonus AD)
Slow Duration: 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 / 2.75 seconds

Aatrox E is set to always slow by 40%. I max this second because it helps in catching squishier targets in team fights and is far more usefull than his Q when trying to maximize your DPS.

Aginst some ranged targets you might even want to consider maxing this first.

R: Massacre

Explanation:

Cooldown: 100 / 85 / 70
Cost: No cost

Magic Damage: 200 / 300 / 400 (+ 100% AP)
Attack Speed: 40 / 50 / 60%

Aatrox ultimate is what throws many people off-guard.
"For the next 12 seconds, Aatrox's gains bonus attack speed and 175 bonus attack range (325 total range). He is still considered melee for item purposes."

If you combine his ultimate attack speed with the healing of Blood Thirst he is just as unkillable as tryndamere in 1v1 fights even he has close to 0 hp.

Alternatively vs certain kills you R,Q,E,W(Blood Price).

Match-ups

Avoid picking Aatrox vs champions such as:

[imgext=][imgext=]

Early Game

Right when you hit lvl 3 (having gotten 1 rank on Q,W and E). You wan't to start playing really aggressive.
You should be able to win a 1v1 trade vs anyone thanks to your passive.
You want to get a lot of hits of without pushing your lane to make use of your W.

Against hard lanes you might want to wait on your aggression until you hit lvl 6, for example Jax comes to mind.

Mid Game

Against hard lanes you want to snowball without letting your opponent get turret or sacrificing to many minions.
When you against an easy lane want to keep pushing your lane much like AP trynda does, remembering to ward properly, because in the end do not by far have as much sustain as AP Trynda but you can kill Turrets a lot faster.

Late Game

Your play style in mid and lategame teamfights depend a lot on what build route you went.

Doing the immortal build gives you perfect capabilitys to initiate a fight. (Thanks to Zonyas and GA)

However if you are building a more standard build you want to be more cautious. Wait for all major CC effects to be cast (like Amumus ultimate) and then Q,E,R,W in. Your role, going a regular build, is to burst down squishy targets as fast as possible. Even tough you can beat mostly anyone in a 1v1 situation.

Team Fights

As said above, wait for all major enemy CC to go off, then entering the fight with a goal of killing the most squishy targets with most damage (Ad, and AP carry).

However if building the Immortal build you can initiate a fight if your team as no other champion to do this. Activating Zonyas, and having a GA and your passive active will give you a lot of time to refresh your cooldowns and forcing the enemy team to focus someone else.

Item Builds

Essential Items:

-------------------------------
Blade of the ruined king
-------------------------------

bilgewater-cutlass later blade-of-the-ruined-king is the most essential item for Aatrox. Why? well it further induce Aatorx survivability and damage, and int late game damage vs tankier opponents.

If the enemy team is very squishy you can skip finishing your blade-of-the-ruined-king. You should still consider buying bilgewater-cutlass, but you can also rush a the-bloodthirster. However if you rush a BT you should look for extra attack speed in other items such as a zephyr.

Other Item to consider

-----------------
Infinity Edge
-----------------

infinity-edge Why not? if you feel like you don't need extra tankyness and just want to stomp their team you could go for an Infinity edge. Crit works very well on Aatrox since you'll have a lot of attack speed. It can increase you're DPS by a lot.

However if you decided to build a bilgewater-cutlass early and a hexdrinker or a the-brutalizer, i don't recommend rushing an infinity-edge, since you'll just be to squishy in team fights.

If you decide to build and infinity-edge id build it as my last item, maybe as a replacement for the-brutalizer.

----------------------------
Guinsoo's Rageblade
----------------------------
guinsoos-rageblade

I was theory crafting as i was going to bed thinking about whether to include or not to include Ravenous Hydra in my build, and came to the conclusion that it really has nothing Aatorx needs except the life steal.

So what does Aatrox need? He needs attack speed and life steal.

Guinsoo's Rageblade gives you:

+30 Attack Damage
+40 Ability Power

Passive: Basic attacks (on hit) and spell casts grant +4% Attack Speed and +4 Ability Power for 8 seconds (stacks up to 8 times).
UNIQUE Passive: Falling below 50% Health grants +20% Attack Speed, +10% Life Steal, and +10% Spell Vamp until out of combat (30 second cooldown).

This item might be something you get last. Let me explain.
Since you'll have so much attack speed you'll be running 8 stacks of this item most of the time, giving you a maximum amount of +24% attack speed and +24 Ability Power.

And if you ever get focused down and drop below 50% health you'll get another +20% attack speed, +10% Life STal and + 10% Spellwamp.

Potentially giving you +44% Attack speed, +10%Life Steal, +10%Spellwamp, +30 AD, and +64AP.

Seems pretty good, huh?

I'm not fully sure though how Ap works on Aatorx but i know his E and R use it. But as said this is only theory crafting.

Controversial Items

----------------------
Phantom Dancer
----------------------

phantom-dancer comes to mind. 50% attack speed, 30& crit & 5% move speed. Seems like an awesome item for Aatrox, right?

The problem with phantom dancer isn't that it isn't a good item on Aatrox, the problem is that you'll have to replace it for another essential item.

I could potentially see the phantom dancer working in compination with a infinity-edgethe-bloodthirster, but then again you're life steal would only depend on a fully stacked BT.

I haven't had enough time to try out this build, so this is almost only based on theory crafting.

----------------------
Warmogs Armor
----------------------
warmogs-armor

I included this in my original build but later realized that Warmogs is quite useless. Since attack speed and life steal are your main "abilities" you wont need the extra 1% rgn of maximus health per 5 sec. However if you still want the HP Frozen Mallet i far more useful, thanks to it's passive: 1,5sec slow on each basic attack; slowing 40%.

----------------------
Ravenous Hydra
----------------------
ravenous-hydra

This item was long included in my build, but finally after much consideration, i removed it.
To be honest RH doesn't have any of the stats you want. You're primary stats as Aatrox are Life Steal and Attack Speed in combination with survivability items, which you can accomplish by going various of item paths.

Back to the hydra. The ravenous hydra has 75AD, 15 HP.rgn and 12% life steal + the AOE passive.
As Aatrox you want to be able to burst down enemies as quickly as possible, and this item doesn't really help you accomplish that. For example the 15 Hp.rgn is completely useless since you'll be maxing out on your life steal and attack speed, and the AOE it provides is quite frankly totally useless, since in most to all scenarios their full team wont be close enough for you to take advantage of this.
What to replace this item with however? The Bloodthirster. Without any stacks it gives almost the same AD and lifesteal and potentially with full stacks: a sum of 100 AD and 18% lifesteal.
Remember this isn't an item you should aim for first, it's an endgame item, when you're otherwise fully maxed-out to really help you maximize your damage.

Here is a quick video showing how Aatrox Passive works GA:

How this works?

I'm quoting a discussion i had with Hellstom and MajorAwesomeD on lag.tv:

/. . ./ GA would give him an additional revive that would go off first and then his normal revive would trigger after that as needed. By that point, his passive will bring him back with a greater amount than the GA and thus giving him more health on the third chance. All of these items together will give him the best chance to out duel any champ and give him even more damage in team fights. Plus, armor and MR is always good.

The Zhonya's is for close to the same reason, more revives. Although it isn't necessarily a revive, it serves the same purpose, to make you untargetable for a short duration while your team is able to do some work. When the enemy team starts to focus you (as they should, due to his high burst damage), you pop the Zhonya's and then they have to switch targets to someone else. After the Zhonya's is done they will either re-focus on you, thus wasting their time on the other target, or they will continue to focus the other champ giving you time to put in the necessary damage. The Ability power adds in to both him E and him Ult thus giving both of them more damage, especially in team fights where you should be able to hit most of them with the ability.

/. . ./ Aatrox has INSANE burst. If you hit Q + E + R + W passive on one target, he or she is gone.

Having this insane amount of burst/base damage basically gives you a free pass to build whatever you want (dont worry, he will get nerfed).

Just like Elise, he is extremly potent without lots of damage items. This makes him a huge threat in teamfights if you snowball early in the game. Because of this, people will focus you down, and Aatrox is only good when he's not being cc'd (he has no cc breakers so). If the enemy team focuses you down while having items like GA and Zhonya's + Free passive, its just a great way to distract them and letting your team do the rest.

You can read the full discussion at: http://www.lag.tv/forums/forums/moba/topics/league-of-legends-aatrox-guide

Jungling

Overview:

Aatrox is a very viable jungle thanks to his sustain and his ganking abilities as early as level 3. What makes Aatrox such a strong early jungler is that you can almost immediately tower dive your opponent, because when your passive trigger under a turret it actually stops focusing you.

Keep in mind that when playing as Aatrox jungle you might want to max your Q third (after R & W) instead of E because it will lower the cooldown on the spell, and help you deal more AOE damage.

However i haven't had enough time to play Aatrox jungle, as I've been focusing on my solo top guide. However i'm going to try to get a some kind of Jungle guide to so stay tuned :)

Feedback Please!

I'm trying my best to improve this guide whenever i can. And i'm currently considering expanding this to a jungle guide once I've played more jungle with Aatrox.

However improving a guide might sometimes prove to be hard, but with your feedback and suggestions I'm sure we can make this the bets Aatrox guide out there!

Hey! Nice build. Personally I like to put my first point into his E. It gives you a good ranged harass at the beginning, in case you happen to get matched against a champion who can over-range you and disrupt your farm. Personally I haven't taken to GA and ZHG in my build, I prefer to go heavy AD, AS, and LS. It makes him massively sustainable, and as long as you play smart you can come out of any team fight with a few more kills.

June 18, 2013 - 01:44 AM #8

Wanted to point out that in your "Ad Tank" build you have both Merc Treads and Zephyr. Tenacity doesn't stack so there are better alternative items to Zephyr unless the movement speed is that important to you.

June 16, 2013 - 10:06 PM #9

You spend 3 points on crit masteries but take 0 items that give crit....

@Nairolf25 Oh thanks for for pointing that out.
