Champion Matchups

Introduction

Welcome to my Aatrox guide. I am BicycleBill. I will be doing a comprehensive guide on Aatrox, starting with the top lane aspect.

From what I have experienced with Aatrox from PBE and the initial release, he is the "op" champ with sustain and dueling capability. Though his sustain can be incredibly powerful against most match ups, he can be easily overwhelmed against a cc/ranged poke lane opponent and/or kiting. I find him far from "op", though he is a very fun champ to play.

Pros:
  • Sustain monster.
  • Gap closer.
  • Ranged part slow.
  • Passive revive.
  • TWO amazing attack speed steroids. (Passive and Ultimate)

Cons:
  • Extremely susceptible to kiting.
  • Attack speed debuffs (Nasus/Malphite) hinder him incredibly.
  • High Health Resource costs take some getting used to.

Masteries

I typically go with 21/9/0 because I feel it is the best set of masteries for Aatrox. Depending on lane opponent, I recommend swapping between Magic Resist and Armor in the defense tree.[imgext=][http://i.imgur.com/HXQRoXn.jpg?1?4384]

9/21 can be ideal if you need to fulfill the off tank/bruiser role.

Skills

Passive: Blood Well

Explanation:

The part that most people overlook is the attack speed that you gain while your Blood Well is filled. This can give you the sustain you need and give you that advantage in those close low health duels due to Blood Thirst. Also, the resurrection is nice. ;)

Q: Dark Flight

Explanation:

Dark Flight lifts you into the air, then has you descending upon your target. The two reticles shown determine whether you deal damage and knock up, or just deal damage. This is your primary hard cc and also your main form of escape... Misuse of this ability will make or break an Aatrox early and mid game.

W: Blood Thirst

Explanation:

The bread and butter ability of Aatrox. With instant toggle capability, you can choose at a moment's notice whether you need the sustain from Blood Thirst or the damage from Blood Price during a trade. It requires a bit more attention at later points of the game to counter this, which most lane opponents don't seem to realize. While under half health, you receive triple the health return. Learning the balance of sustain/damage on this ability is really what will determine whether or not you win most lanes.

E: Blades of Torment

Explanation:

Your poke/slow ability. This will save you from ganks, secure a kill, or can just help you farm when needed. Keep in mind that the blades start wide and narrow as they extend out.

R: Massacre

Explanation:

Massacre gives you Kayle like range on your auto attacks, a monstrous attack speed steroid, and still does a nice chunk of magic damage the moment it is casted. This can be used as both an offense and an amazing baiting defensive cooldown when used in conjunction with your Blood Thirst.

Item Builds

A solid starting option against typical ad lane bullies. Paired with your W, allows you to pitch a tent in your lane and not leave for a long time.

Relatively weaker starting build in my opinion, but can definitely help against skill shot lanes.

Pretty mandatory with Aatrox as it supplies sustain, a second (and guaranteed) slow, and the attack speed to make your W more of a threat.

The Brutalizer gives you the armor pen, CDR, and more ad to dominate your lane when you're already ahead. Typically a solid choice when you're snowballing.

Great item vs heavy fed AD carries or just teams that are AD heavy in general

When you're playing the main tank of the team, always a solid choice when paired with your W and Blade of the Ruined King. Your sustain plus the damage aura allows you to be more of a threat when not focused, but allows you to stay tanky enough that they will NEED to focus you.

After experimenting with Wit's End, I'm starting to enjoy the new MR steal mechanic with Blade of the Ruined King. You will have so much attack speed, along with a little more tankiness to stay in the game and wreak havoc. It's really hard to ignore this item now.

Pretty much your "go-to" item against AP heavy teams, especially when paired with Blood Thirst. This is almost on my mandatory item list, but only when the enemy AP is outweighing the AD.

What else can I say aside from "You're going to have to kill me three times." Such a fun item when paired on someone with a resurrection passive. If the game lasts long enough, just sell and rebuy anytime the passive is used.

Early Game

Aatrox pre level 6 is just a farm/sustain machine. At level 1, you should not use your Blades of Torment to harass unless you are SURE you will land it. Always remember that your Q and E take a relatively large amount of health to use. Your goal should be to farm and build your Blood Well as soon as possible. You do not, however, want to miss your abilities. Missing abilities is essentially giving your lane opponent more "kill potential." Use every opportunity you can to last hit with Blood Thirst to 3 without being punished. At level 3, focus on using the 3rd hit of your Blood Thirst on your lane opponent when they don't have a large minion wave to punish you for it. ALWAYS remember to build your Blood Well up before a fight!

Mid Game

Farm your face off. By this point, you should be able to hold your own against pretty much anyone 1v1, especially with your revive up on Blood Well. Keep wards running and assist with objectives (turrets/dragon/baron) when needed. ALWAYS remember to build your Blood Well up before a fight!

Late Game

This is entirely dependent on if you went the Melee ADC type role or bruiser/off tank. If you went more for the latter, you should use your Q and E as peeling tools and keep your ADC/AP alive as much as possible. If you went more all out ADC, jump on and Massacre (giggity) the enemy ADC/AP when given the opportunity without putting yourself into a fight without the support of your team. Remember, it's all about balance. ALWAYS remember to build your Blood Well up before a fight!

Team Fights

Once you have your ult, Aatrox becomes a threat. His ult, in my opinion, loses a lot of it's value if you aren't also taking advantage of his main passive ability: The boosted attack speed. With your Blood Well full and your ult available, you are capable of hitting 1.3 APS (attacks per second) with only your Attack Speed runes. The steroid for the attack speed is quite weak with an empty Blood Well, so always remember to keep an eye on it and try to get it as high as possible before an engage. Two strategies that I have found work very well: If you have been winning your lane and have a solid item lead, you can use your Q position you on their AP or AD, catching as many of the enemy team as possible. Always try to use your ult in team fights while in the middle of as many opponents as possible. The magic damage burst is not to be overlooked, especially around level 11. Your second focus, and one I typically find best for team fights, is to jump on as many of the enemy team as possible with Q and ult, then focus auto attacks on their tankiest team member while using your E and Q to peel for your AD/AP. Typically, with your high attack speed and sustain and range on your ult, you can sit and sustain on their tank while healing a large portion of incoming damage (let's face it, you're going to be focused a lot just due to being a newer champ) and your Q/E makes a great peeling tool. I find the tankier/peeler Aatrox build seems to be more threatening and more dangerous in team fights. ALWAYS remember to build your Blood Well up before a fight! The attack speed gain is too important for Aatrox to pass up.

Final Comments

Aatrox has the potential to be a scary damage dealing bruiser. When you get used to W swapping on the 3rd hits and understand the potential damage from your opponent early game, you can really become the most annoying person in the game to people. Any other questions/recommendations or feedback is definitely welcome. Thanks!
