Introduction

Hi. I am Platinum I League player Tacom and I main top lane. ( I also play mid and jungle a lot )

In this guide I will show you how to play Aatrox ( I do not force you in any way to play this champion the way I do - it's all up to you how you want to do it, but I recommend following my advices )

If you read the lore you will know that Aatrox is Tryndamere's father.
(just kidding - he is not)

Aatrox fall under the category of melee AD carry/AD bruiser.

Pros:
  • Great sustain.
  • Gap closer.
  • Knock up and slow.
  • Ultimate increases range.
  • Passive and ultimate attack speed buffs.

Cons:
  • Uses health as a resource for skills.
  • Countered with kiting, heavy CC, heal preventing debuffs.
  • Meele (needs to get in meele range to deal considerable damage)

Some normal games results:

Runes

You can also switch some AD to LifeSteal runes but I prefer raw damage.

Summoner Sets

Primary Set
If you go Top/Mid. These Summoner Spells are used the most and for a good reason.

- lets you chase, escape and even initiate for certain champions.
- provides you that little bit damage to finish off your prey. Also useful to prevent enemy from receiving heal.
Flash & Smite
Take these summoners if you jungle.

Always take even if you think you don't need it, because its main purpose is to secure objectives, such as Dragon, Baron, etc. If someone told you they can jungle without smite tell them they are stupid...
Ghost & Ignite
Is also a good choice if you think you can survive your lane without flash.

Because Aatrox is melee you have to be in close range in order to bring out maximum damage. helps a lot by providing that additional movement speed you needed.

Item Builds

Standart Jungle

- damage, sustain, what else do you need.
- if you are sure you can get first blood and snowball.
- versus basic attack spam (including ranged AP mid).
- versus AD.
- if your primary focus is to farm and sustain the harassment your enemy provides.
- in 3.8 Patch you can buy 4 potions with boots which makes it a good choice if you want sustain. Movement speed is also good to escape ganks.
- obvious choice if you jungle.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
Core items:
- gives you everything you need. More attack speed to proc your faster, more damage, more sustain. Active skill lets you catch up to people or escape dire situations.
- if you set your goal to split push then this item is made for you. Good sustain, incredible pushing capabilities and huge damage provider in team fights.
- in order to deal maximum damage Aatrox have to be in range to auto attack. If enemy team composition is good at kiting this is a nice item to consider as you literally can stick to people with the help of its passive.
- good item if you jungle, more damage, cooldown reduction and true damage.

Boots:
- perfect versus AP/heavy CC team.
- perfect versus AD team.
- good if you have strong CC team who can protect you.

Late game:
- good choice versus AP enemy team.
- gives you sustain and damage.
- if enemy team stacks armor this is the best item for that.
- vs AP enemy team.
- if you have AD team it's a good item to buy since it helps your team a lot by reducing enemy armor.
- passive and active helps versus heavy AD team. Gives you survivability and tankiness which you most likely will require, because people will focus you.
- if you get really ahead in the game and people start to focus you, you might want to consider buying this item. With it and your passive you have double which is pretty insane.
Switch (only really late into the game) to - same passive, but gives you good attack damage/attack speed boosts.
Build Order
Sometimes you want to rush but if you are against someone like singed who pushes really hard you need to buy after in order to counter push him. Then you get some tankyness with and finish your 3 core items.

EBlades of Torment
RMassacre
Max W if you go Top/Mid. The reason is simple. If you get ahead, you can snowball your lane even more if you do 2 basic attacks, "Blood Price" proc for "Tons of damage!". If you get behind you can sustain yourself through everything with your "Blood Thirst".

Skills

Blood Well
Tower diving was never that easy. Attack speed buff and free every few minutes. Enough said. Nice synergy with
Dark Flight
Gap closer. Knock up and escape tool. Main purpose is utility. That's why we max it last. You might consider maxing it earlier if you jungle - for faster cooldown.
Blood Thirst
Either a huge sustain buff or damage output amplifier. Really good baiting skill.
Blades of Torment
Slow debuff. Some magic damage. Helps clear waves.
Massacre
Incredible ultimate. Huge attack speed buff and most importantly range boost. Can throw people off-guard. Obviously have incredible synergy with

Skill Order

Early Game

Top/Mid:
You can outsustain most laners so you should focus on farming and trading by hitting minions 2 times and then hitting 3rd time your enemy with proc. Always buy wards. Don't overextend. Always check and try to predict where enemy jungler is.

Jungle:
Farm. Gank when chance arises. Your and are pretty good for ganking if you can land them properly.

Mid Game

Top/Mid
Farm. Help other lanes if chance arises. Help your jungler to take dragon.
At this point you are extremely strong duelist, but you should be careful not to overextend because you are quite squishy.

Jungle:
Farm. Gank. Ward enemy jungle, steal buffs, take dragon and always write objective respawn times.

Golem respawn time: 5.00 min.
Lizard respawn time: 5.00 min.
Dragon respawn time: 6.00 min.
Baron respawn time: 7.00 min.

Late Game

Your role late game really depends on your team composition.
If you know enemy bruisers/assassins will go for your ADC you might want to peel for him.
Otherwise try to kill enemy team ADC or AP carry.

FAQ

Should I build critical chance, critical damage on Aatrox?
No. The answer is the same as why you not build critical chance, critical damage on It works on her, but it is not very viable. Why? Because scales really well from AD.
It's the same for Aatrox. He have 3 skills which scale from AD ( 4 if you count 2 different passives on his ) Critical chance, critical damage can work for you, but you lose out on all the burst your skills can provide by getting those AD items.

Should I build attack speed on Aatrox?
No and Yes. Your passive and ultimate gives you a huge attack speed boost and I consider it enough. The only items I consider buying which provide attack speed is and (I usually won't buy unless really late into the game where I would switch to this item)
If you want to deal more consistent damage instead of providing burst damage then by all means buy attack speed.

Is Aatrox OP?
This is only my opinion but I say: Maybe a little bit. Whenever "Riot" releases new champion 80% of League of Legends community agrees that it's OP and it's not surprising because those 80% are bronze and silver players who lack proper knowledge in how to counter champions.

If Aatrox is only slightly OP how do I counter him?
The same way you counter : Kite him, use heavy Crowd Control, ignite him or use similar debuffs.

Final Comments

Aatrox is a strong top/mid laner or somewhat decent jungler(I do not consider jungle to be a good place for him, because it doesn't provide enough farm for him).

His passive is amazing in both lane and team fight fazes.

He is hard to deal with without ignite and overall is pretty annoying to deal with.

He have AOE wave clear and some CC.

He can carry really hard if fed.

In the end Aatrox is a really strong champion and it's extremely fun to play him.

imyodaspimp, thank you for your comment. I am planning on adding "Matchups" section after I've played more games with Aatrox.

I personally love playing Renekton. He is a lane bully. Because of that he will most likely push lane and try to get level 2 fast. But Aatrox is no pushover too. That's why you can push your lane too and trade with him by hitting minions 2 times and proc "Blood Price" - the damage is quite significant. Right after that you switch W state and simply heal yourself as much as you can before next trade. The thing with Aatrox ultimate is that it gives you range( never forget that) . If Renekton can stick to you, you will most likely lose, but if you are able to kite him and effectively switch your W stances you should keep up with him. Also watch out for Renekton's double dash through your minions - I know the range perfectly because I played him a lot, but it might get you off guard if you are not used to it. Renekton can effectively build both Attack Damage and Tank or hybrid. If he builds tank you most likely don't have any chance of killing him, in which case you should focus on farming, otherwise it all depends on yours and Renekton's skill difference.

Please note that all what I said is true while not including interference from other lanes and junglers. You should always keep that in mind.

Good luck in your games with Aatrox :)

murk1, thank you for your comment, but I think video related comments should be posted on youtube, not here.

Regarding that push, yes it was my mistake and I acknowledge it, that's why I made a comment in the video saying "Overextending OP" ^_^

June 18, 2013 - 03:46 PM #7

i'll say one thing, you did make a mistake when you were pushing too hard mid and died which gave them a baron. that's about as bad as the vayne going to red. just saying.

June 17, 2013 - 05:47 PM #8

JCCA, thank you for the comment and the kind words :)

You are right, saying that everyone in bronze and silver think that Aatrox is OP would be overgeneralization. What I meant was that generally lower League players tend to create quick opinions on new champions without logically based arguments, while more experienced players who are in higher League do not rush and properly test new champions and then decide if they are OP or not. (Even then, it's not absolute. There were many cases, where everyone agrees that the champion is only average, until someone shows how to play it properly and suddenly everyone thinks that champion is OP)

June 17, 2013 - 04:19 PM #9

guy im totally agree with your build and your guide but it isnt funy if u said silver player is only saying- new champs op¡¡¡ im in silver and i dont say that and i know when one champ is op and when not but the guide is so good :D

June 16, 2013 - 04:46 PM #10

Falxhor, thank you for your comment.

Fiora is surely a good counter for Aatrox because of her Parry skill ( lane phase outcome still relies on yours and enemy Fiora skills difference + other factors such as ganks, luck, etc ) Assuming she goes hydra, that means she will push really hard. Try to be nice to your jungler and ask for a gank. Otherwise, just let her push and farm under tower ( because she doesn't have poke capabilities, it shouldn't be a problem, unless you fed her too much ). If you feel like she can dive you with her ultimate ability, don't hesitate to leave lane - yes, you might lose tower, but after that you can freeze lane and farm. When team fights start to occur, the farm will be extremely important factor and that is what you should focus in this matchup.

Good luck in your future games with Aatrox :)
