Champion Matchups

Introduction

Aatrox is a high damage, low defense champion that requires building offensively to deal damage and relying on his lifesteal and passive to survive for the majority of fights.

Aatrox is also an incredibly hard name to make a clever title with, so I'm really bummed about that.

Champion Overview

Strengths:
+Incredibly high sustain
+Good escape
+AoE CC
+Two catches
+Very high attack speed with passive and ultimate
+Slightly higher range than most melees with ultimate
+Has a revive for passive
+No mana cost for skills

Weaknesses:
-Requires autoattacking in lane (pushes lane, making it easy to gank)
-Very reliant on skills for chasing
-Very slow attack speed when passive/ultimate are down
-Uses a significant amount of HP to cast skills
-High cooldown on skills
-Reliant on autoattacking for damage and survivability
-Attack speed slows hurts a lot
-Vulnerable against heavy ranged harasses
-Prone to being bursted down

Commentary

Masteries

21/9/0:

With how dependent Aatrox is on autoattacking for damage, the additional damage from the Offense tree is ideal. The bit of points into the Defense tree is for extra survivability, especially early on in laning.

17/13/0:

Without going into Armor Penetration in runes, a 17/13/0 page can be good for extensive trading. The extra durability points in the Defense tree will help Aatrox come out ahead in trades.

Runes

Marks:

Attack Damage
AD is the best option for easier last hitting, better trading and stronger early game.

Attack Speed
Attack Speed is an option as it synergies nicely with Aatrox's . However, since Aatrox gets bonus attack speed from his passive and ultimate, it is not needed.

Armor Penetration
Armor Pen is another option, as Aatrox does primarily physical damage. However, because Aatrox is not reliant on his spells, armor pen isn't as attractive of an option.

Seals:

Armor
Armor is best for all match-ups in the top lane, even if it is to block excessive damage from minions.

Glyphs:

Magic Resistance (Flat/Scaling)
Magic resistance is needed for most cases. Take either Flat MR when laning against a magic dealer or scaling if not.

Quintessences:

Lifesteal
Lifesteal combined with makes it very easy to sustain in lane.

Attack Damage
AD works well for a bit of extra damage in lane.

Armor Penetration
Armor Pen is an option for the extra bit of damage, but not as good of an option as the other two.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

Ignite is needed for the extra boost of damage for finishing off targets. Flash is also standard and is good for Aatrox.

Explanation:

If Flash isn't what you're looking for, Ghost is an alternative.

Skills

Passive: Blood Well

Explanation:
Passively grants attack speed as the bar fills up. Using , or the damage portion of fills up the passive. Always aim to have it near max when looking to fight.

Note: You lose all of the passive when you resurrect and you lose all the attack speed from the passive.

Q: Dark Flight

Explanation:
Large AoE, but only the center knocks-up. It is very important to land this ability for kills and in fights. This is also very useful for running away and can be used to hop over walls.

W: Blood Thirst

Explanation:
Generally, you'll want to toggle Blood Thirst on when in lane for the extra sustain. When fighting, you will want to toggle Blood Price until you are less than 50%, and at that point it will be better to take the sustain (because it is doubled).

Note: Aatrox's attack pattern goes slash-slash-poke (if lifesteal) or slash-slash-smash (if damage) and it will always poke if Blood Thirst is proccing on that attack.

E: Blades of Torment

Explanation:
A rather narrow and slow skillshot. It can be very difficult to land it max range, but the poke and wave clear is excellent for laning.

Note: You can cancel the wind-down animation of Blade of Torment by activating immediately after.

R: Massacre

Explanation:
Increases attack speed, increases attack range and provides an AoE nuke.

Skill Order

> > /

Maxing first:
Maxing Blood Thirst first gives a ton of damage or sustain every 3 autos. With Blood Thirst being the skill that Aatrox works completely around with, it is the best skill to max first.

Maxing or :
When playing against a champion that I can dominate in an all-in, I max Dark Flight second. However, if I'm against a champion that I need to poke a bit beforehand, I'll take more levels in Blades of Torment.

Item Builds

Start:

Doran's Blade is good in most cases and picking up another can help in tough lanes with lots of trading.

Cloth Armor + 5 Pots works against heavy physical damage dealers, but you generally won't need it.

Rejuvenation Bead + 5 Pots + Ward builds into a Tiamat if you prefer that build.

Elixir of Fortitude + 3 Pots helps the most against strong laners and is especially good in a mirror match.

Early:

Cutlass and Daggers build into a Blade of the Ruined King and synergies very well with

Tiamat with Vamp builds into a Ravenous Hydra and works alright with Aatrox. However, BotRK's attack speed has better synergy with Aatrox's skillset.

Hexdrinker with Vamp Scepter is good when laning against a magic damage dealer.

Boots:

When laning against a magic dealer with a respectable amount of CC, I recommend Mercury Treads. If you're having trouble early on, just grab a and upgrade to a or Merc Treads later.

Ninja Tabi is recommended against physical damage dealers and especially those that use a lot of autoattacks. I wouldn't grab boots early, but an early can help.

Core:

BotRK is super awesome for Aatrox as everything about this item benefits Aatrox greatly. The active works extremely well for chasing targets too.

Ravenous Hydra is an alright alternative too, but BotRK's attack speed has better results.

With Aatrox's reliance on autoattacks for damage, Last Whisper is a needed buy.

Situational:
+
Hexdrinker is a great and cheap way to deal with magic damage dealers. Later on, you can upgrade Hexdrinker to a Maw, but it may be better to just sell the Hexdrinker and buy a to deal with CC.

+
QSS + Mercurial Scimitar are great late game teamfight items and are needed against teams with suppression or if they are focusing a lot of CCs onto you.

Zephyr's stats are extremely good for Aatrox, but the core items of BotRK and LW are more important.

Guardian Angel provides an extra life reset for Aatrox, allowing you to play even manlier!

Randuin's Omen is a great option against physical damage dealers.

Frozen Mallet is great for chasing and provides extra survivability.

Laning

When laning and throughout the game, always keep your as high as you can. Even at level 1, don't hesitate to use your skills on the air, just to get the passive up and use your lifesteal to push up. Because you're pushing up, you'll reach level 2 faster and the combination of 's damage and the knock-up from , you can look for easy kills from unsuspecting victims.

The third strike from should be targeted onto the enemy champion as it is very difficult to trade versus Aatrox in a brief engagement.

I always get early Vamp Scepter for the additional sustain and I always aim to push up and often rely on my escape to avoid ganks.

Teamfights

Aatrox is very squishy in teamfights and he can never be the initiator for a team. Aatrox is an assassin and needs to play like one in fights. Generally in fights, toggle off for the damage when above 50% HP, but have on when below 50% HP for the additional sustain.

When in a teamfight, make use of the range from (despite how little it is) and either dive for the squishies by going from the back or help your team's squishies kill the tanks.

Final Comments

Aatrox is a high damage dealing assassin that relies on lifesteal for survivability. His relies completely on being able to autoattacking and sustaining in lane. Aatrox is definitely fun to play and building correctly is a big part to playing him well.

Isn't blade of the ruined king kinda of a waste since you get so much attack speed from passive and ult. Just building BT,Hydra,visage/hex,last whisper, merc, randuins for Insane lifesteal bruiser.

September 23, 2013 - 06:47 AM #4
