Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hi fellas,

I'm a Euro-Korean guy and a Korean friend of mine made this guide, but it was in Korean. He wanted to show English players about his GP theory, so I'm here to translate it as best as I can.

This type of Gangplank is played a lot at high ELO in Korea (the original author plays there as well - he plays in Diamond rank) and revolves a lot around sustain through the laning phase with orange (W) and abusing your passive by buying attack speed and on-hit to apply through your Q. You then become extremely tanky and annoying and can pressure very hard in teamfight, since you deal a lot of damage with just two items and buy nothing but tank item afterwards. It was discover in S2 when Riot put (R.I.P.) in SR and players thought it would suck when they said they were gonna remove it in S3 item, BUT they add a new item: !! This item's stat is actually weaker than Ion imo for this GP (no HP, 200g more cost and crit/MS is meh) but works very well. Crit can still kinda help with trades and scale well with E and we don't have to auto creep for the passive anymore and can just move around to charge it.

So as we all know GP is actually a bruiser champ but his level 18 HP and resistances aren't very high and he doesn't really have a good tanking skill. Also, his damage/utility isn't natural very high like Renek or Jayce. But his passive is really strong because it combines utility with damage. This makes tank AS on-hit build a really strong option.

PS: I don't trash other plays, this is just one very strong play I want to teach you as it is very powerful and unknown outside KR soloq.

Masteries

You can go offensive or defensive with mastery on GP. Both have their strength but I prefer defensive. Why? Simple: safe lane and better late game tank plus your damage is mostly from your passive which will not get much stronger with offensive mastery especially with how we build.

This is what I would take for more offensive early GP against a lane I think I will win. But defensive mastery is much more safe in general so choose for lane power or safe lane and tank scaling (also more safe in general).

PS:
  • Change armor pt to MR point vs. AP lane.
  • You can take the +minion dmg to help with CS.
  • Masteries are custom for your play. You don't have to take 1/22/7 for defensive GP or 14/13/3 for offensive GP like me. Use what you are comfortable with (example: some people like 19/11 or 9/21). I just like this mastery personally.

Runes

The early core you want is very important. You don't want to miss a CS! AD rune are really good for CS, which is why I love AD rune. +14 AD runes make CS very easy. And guess what? GP has the best CS skill: his Q, so we use that to CS as well if we can't get it with auto. I like to take 1 crit mark rune simply because you can crit once in a fight and win laning and 1AD vs. 1% crit is worth. The armor runes are standard and always. Even if you play against AP top armor will reduce auto, minion and jungler damage. Even vs. AD top MR will always be good too since even AD champs like Lee Sin and Jayce will deal magic damage and almost all junglers deal magic dmg.

Here are other options:

  • Mark rune: AS (stronger duel later, but weaker early all-in and harder CS)
  • Glyph rune: lvl MR (if you have safe lane this is better late but you can always just buy MR later), AS (stronger duel but very squishy), MP regen (good mana sustain only AD fight)
  • Quintessence rune: AS (stronger duel later, but weaker early all-in and harder CS), HP (early lvl all-in with more survive but less dmg), HP regen (best 1v2 quint rune)

NOTE: Just like the masteries runes are for what you like so use what works good with your play for example some people like much more crit mark runes or MS quint runes.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
These two are the best, nothing else compares. Flash for mobility and ignite for damage and heal reduction.

: OK I lied, this is fine too, because you can use this to gank other lanes, although GP's CC is kind of bad and he has a global skill which does the same. You could this for splitpushing, but a lot of f*ckers in top will rape you/survive in lane if you don't have ignite. In solo rank you have to win the game yourself so ignite is better 99% of time.

Skills

Passive: Grog Soaked Blade

Explanation:
This slow and dot damage on-hit is very strong and helpful when you want to fight. You can ignite, auto Q auto and the slow will make it hard to escape. This is what makes the build strong, as you will always pressure hard with slow and DOT dmg.

Q: Parrrley

Explanation:
Don't abuse this skill too much early. Spamming it early level? You're dumb or trolling. Mana cost was increase a long time ago which make it not worth spamming anymore. Also why spam and end up shoving the lane early? You will just give the enemy jungle and top 300 free gold. Only use this to CS early on and when you have enough mana (+half~) bust enemies with auto reseting. Very good for chasing and peeling and keeping up stacks from .

PS: auto Q auto = three passive stacks and is very easy to do because Q resets your auto.
PSS: procs so charge it and poke the enemy with the lightning (Zeus GP lightning!).

W: Remove Scurvy

Explanation:
We max this first. OP sustain for lane. Nobody expects you to max this, especially at lower ELOs (even at high ELO people expect you to play harass/rice lane with Q max + Sheen rushing). Use this to manage your lane and bait. You will live or even kill your enemy so many times because this sustain.

E: Raise Morale

Explanation:
Not much to say. Strong steroid and makes you and team go fast and make your ADs stronger.

R: Cannon Barrage

Explanation:
Strong global dmg and slow, use if you all-in or to assist your team in fights. Can also be used for disengaging or clearing big creep stacks.

Skill Order

R>W>E>Q.

  • Ult whenever obvious.
  • W sustain is stupid and is GP most underrated ability so max first. W max lets you buy a lot of damage early on without getting punished hard because you are squishy which will let you win lane.
  • E after W because now Q max will increase damage and CS gold too little to be worth (since you are out of lane or ending lane). This makes your MS and AD strong for chasing and the aura is very valuable for teamfights.
  • Q last. Maxing this only increases dmg and CS gold a bit but also mana cost when we are mostly using this for our passive and Static Shiv.

You can in SOME cases go max Q first. This is a good way vs. ricing lanes such as Nasus where it's hard to die or get kills. Certain champs like Cho'Gath or Nidalee (bruiser) can start out beatable but if you can't rape enough early you will not be able to beat them. In this case you can max Q and rice hard as much CS with it as you can. Your skill order will be R>Q>W>E.

- Ult whenever obvious.
- Q first in this case to maximize CS against the herbivores.
- W second because it's more valuable to heal more and more often in fight. If you are dead you don't do damage (same idea as why you want to build tank > dmg as bruiser champ after mid game).
- E last. You will get stronger later, and this is the least smart to max after Q (cleanse/heal power vs. AD/MS auro steroid because you need to live to be useful).

Item Builds

Start: cloth-armor/crystalline-flask/dorans-shield/elixir-of-fortitude with whatever consumables you want.

What you start with is based on the matchup. Strong AD? Cloth. Want sustain? Flask. Rice lane against a melee? Shield. Want to all-in? Fort pot. Take any combination of wards/pots you want. You will typically want pots against harrass and a ward against high pressure junglers to be safe early on.

Early buys can be many different things and depend on what you need. Make sure you don't delay your (/) goal too much or you will have waveclear problem.
  • 1-2 is worth to get early for cheap stats if you are raping the enemy top. HP+AD+on-hit heal is great for all-in.
  • Vs. herbivore and lane you can just get a early to stay in the lane forever to get after mid game goal also is an OK luxury dmg item.
  • Against AD harass like Pantheon or Jayce, you can get first back/buy. The armor helps you take less damage, and the mana and CDR let you sustain harder with orange.
  • For big auto harrass (Kennen, Nid) I would take which also builds into later, which is a strong tanking item.
  • Vs. strong AP lane, x2 (800g so very cheap!) can be bought to take less dmg. Both build into strong items (/ or even if you need mp5 to sustain vs. perma AP dmg). You can also just get a . This new item is a bit broken imo vs. AP poke (Elise/Rumble) and is in recipe for and now which you can complete later and are great for GP, but it is more expensive than double and will delay your mid game goal by much gold.

Mid game goal: statikk-shivwits-end

Simple theory. Maxing W let you exchange against whatever you want. If you're facing an AD get (NOTE: if you are having trouble/doing well look up for early buying otherwise get first if you are even/ok or if you can passive lane maybe with Q max). If you're against a dirty AP guy get . Why these items? Abuse GP's passive but still sustain through anything with W max. You can get a after whatever you get first if you feel like you need to be a little tankier and get whichever you haven't got (NOTE: don't get Wit vs. 0 AP because you pay 1/3 gold the price for MR so it's better to spend gold on other tank/dmg item). Once you get this items you will be the god of top and you can f*ck who you want. Phreak would say "tons of damage".

What you get next depends on what you want/need. If you are ahead and wants dmg then get dmg. Wanna be safe and tank everything? Get tank. I will generally go tanky because I am enough dangerous to targets with the Shiv + Wit core. Enemy AD fed? //, etc. Strong AP? /, etc. Want to be a sadist and peel/slow even harder? . A few good luxury dmg item are (only if you can get it early-mid: it sucks past then) and (builds from which is nice if you got it in the laning). works really well and is a big threat option than Iceborn, but also very expensive doesn't give much tank (-300 HP ofc). Item are all about the situation. Don't always buy the same items!

Boots? Get against high CC or if enemy has mass slow (/, etc.). works well against auto champ (if you get this boot in lane vs. AD but still want CC reduce after, get or ). Buy if you take TP to reduce both summoner CD or if you need to hold base. can work but it is very expensive and imo a luxury item. There are some sick tactics to make with this if you have an Orianna (with the ball on you + flash and these boots + your E make your team follow you/ball faster for Ori ulti).

Matchups

Because of questions from comments for a matchup chapter I have decided to create one. I will not list every possible matchup, but I will list all popular/FOTM top champs you will find in solo rank play (if you think I missed one please msg me or comment and I will add if I think it's worth to add). I will tell you short laning strategy I would use for this and what items I would start with and buy early.

  • : I would start and try to all-in in melee range with auto Q auto. Remember to ignite him if he comes below 50% if he start with W to guarantee you beat him. Otherwise start vs. low pressure jungle for passsive lane. In lane he will have more long term sustain but he can't kill you if you save your W. If you have trouble get early .
  • : It is impossible for her to win pre lvl 6 so you can consider fort pot all-in. After 6 she will have strong burst, but if you work to a if you can't shut her down you should be OK.
  • : Kill this herbivore early or just prepare for Q max and rice lane. Be afraid of enemy jungler since he has good gank assist with Q and you can't remove that with orange. After he is lvl 7-8 nobody can die if you go even.
  • : One of the only top you have trouble all-ining at early level, but it is possible with a fort pot if he doesn't have one. Otherwise play defensive and rush for armor and mana/CDR to sustain yourself with orange. Be afraid of his execute at lvl 6 if he has ignite because it will be hard to orange with heal reduc.
  • : Gay champ with stupid poke but is completely shut down by and W maxing. You can all-in at any time you feel confident but be afraid of spider Q as it executes on low HP with ignite. Early level all in works well before level 4 where she has every ability.
  • : Someone ask me to explain this but I think it's easy for GP. Early all-in she has no answer except block one auto or Q when you have a perma slow + dot on her. She must build a lot of damage to become a strong champ, you don't. Once she has damage you will have armor and you can peel her from the fights with Randuin/Thornmail. She has no waveclearing as well so once you have Static she will get trouble from your procs and she cannot leave tower without fighting in creeps or miss much cs. If you ever have trouble anyway just call a gank. She will die because she has no escape from permaslow.
  • : All-in before level 3 or play the whole lane passive with rush.
  • : Early all-in to shut down. If you can't you can just rush and just chill and farm lane with ward and wait for a jungle gank to kill him (your passive is constantly on her so her passive doesn't help at all and you can orange her CC).
  • : Scary but you can all-in level 1-2. Otherwise and sustain. Once you get you are much stronger than him even if he has .
  • : Bait his E with autos early then engage to crush him. After 6 he is scary and wins all-ins but you don't need any early defensive buys because you can just be safe with W max. With a you can start poking him down for all-in.
  • : You are f*cked after level 5 (he will outdamage everything with EQ combos and deny fights with hammer form E). Just get if you did not do too well and wait for your to even with him.
  • : . Your only chance to beat him is in the first 2 level with aggressive play. Otherwise you are his b*tch and are forced to build defensive. Try your best to farm and ask for early ganks. You can fight him after 6 with a +/.
  • : You have better level 1-3 all-in, but if he is smart he will avoid you and max his E. In this case just let the wave shove to you because his E will push as he tries to poke you and just farm. If he goes damage he will not beat you, but if he goes tanker () you can not but you can both not really die if you just disengage. Be afraid of level 6 Lee Sin Q>E>ward>R combo when you feel jungle is close.
  • : Early all-in she can not survive unless she start with E. She is your b*tch in lane because she has 0 sustain and is very squishy. Be afraid of gank after lvl 6 but just make sure you orange her ULT (not her W) because Lissandra players usually don't time CC between orange.
  • : Becomes herbivore lane if you can't dominate so pressure early. His gank help is scary after he is lvl 6 so make sure you ward. With a you can push the wave and harass him under tower (you can poke him if you walk properly before he get his passive back) and maybe go for the kill if you get him low.
  • : Herbivore gay lane you will only win if you kill him level 1-2. After this he just beats you. Luckily you can be just as gay and max Q and he can't W you for a kill because you have W. Scary late game but weak early/mid play power outside the lane so try to end ASAP.
  • : AP Nid = lol. Bruiser Nid = or early all-in. Just survive the lane and be more useful in teamfight.
  • : One of the biggest counter, but you can easily survive with start > and W maxing. He will eventually have no more mana after Q spam and stop scaling.
  • : Not hard lane. You can all-in but if he realizes he is losing he has escape with E. After level 6 you should remember his HP ult so try to bait it, deny engage then fight for guaranteed kill. Ward a lot because he has strong gank engage with E > E > W (but you also have orange~).
  • : Your all-in is stronger outside bush early. Always get early so you live. Once you have (or at least ) you can get a and ask for jungle gank. You can kill him with jungle help (normally with you will have enough to poke then bust) easily after lvl 6 with the pink and dot/slow. Rengar has no escape tool (he can only root you which you can orang) and use ult for some MS and he is very squishy. In lane never let yourself get free jump by him (you can get lanegank bait by making him jump esp. blue side top with where jungle connect to lane good).
  • : Whoever win early trade will win the lane. You can with level 1 all-in with fort pot but she just has way stronger fighting after that with all her skills leveled. Get a and try to go even. After you get tanky late game you will be the king of her. In teamfight peel for your team to keep her from pressuring your squishies.
  • : He is easy to beat before he gets 6, but after level 6 he has strong burst. Make sure you put him behind and deny him some farm to get a lead. Maybe get some to keep him scared. Teamfights focus on killing him if he goes for your squishy champs.
  • : Weak early but scary bursting level 5+. Go . After this you can all-in him again and keep him from being dangerous in teamfight by going for him.
  • : All-in early or go farm mode. You can't stop his ult so get and pressure his lane to balance his TP by denying him CS/getting his tower(s). Can't push at all so you can poke him with Static too.
  • : May seem scary since you are melee but you can keep him slowed for early kills. Otherwise rush and never let him get behind your tower.
  • : Kill early or be his b*tch. Most Teemo player build squishy and with not much or no sustain so you can beat him in melee engage but make sure you only auto Q auto when his Q is on CD.
  • : Beatable early levels but gets scary. Otherwise you are his WORST NIGHTMARE in teamfight with permaslow and he will never get anything done but push lanes. A good Tryndamere play can be a problem. Do not try to fight him then; just CS good or if you are getting beat up get ( later after Static) and tell your jungle to make a pressure on him.
  • : All-in early or just play super passive. Ask for early ganks otherwise she will melt everything. Arm tank items (//) always just to try and keep her pressured and down in teamfight and hope for your team to help focus her.
  • : lol.
  • : You both have the best level 2s (Wukong more burst, GP more over time) but he can't hurt you if you get early armor. Also his wave clear sucks so will damage his power. At tower he is your b*tch for Static poking, but be scared of his level 6 with ganks as the burst is high.
  • : He is very much like GP (sustain, cc, utility) although he has stronger all-in than you (one of the strongest early level champ). You can get rape by this guy early. If this happen get / then your core. You should survive this lane but you will both be strong pressure bruiser so make your job to peel him.
  • : F*ck this guy, but it is possible to survive the lane. Get this two items: , then just your core . With Chalice+SV you just go even. He will not die to you but you can kite him in teamfight with your passive + so he is just there to be gay in the laning.
  • : Same as Yorik (^) but this can be beat early levels guy though this guy is actually a stupid OP teamfight champion and has stupid gank help with jungler. Disengage him/his team with ult + E when he engaged and just keep pressure on enemy damage dealers.

Early Game

Look at the enemy toplane/jungler and decide which start is best and what pots you want or if you want a ward.

Your level 1 is insane. I can't imagine a lot of tops that can win you at level 1 all-ins (even blind monk Lee Singer!), especially if you went with full AD runes. Because it's so strong, you can initiate whenever if you see an opportunity to auto Q auto. Add ignite and autos and almost nobody will surivive, but watch out for fort pot baits. You can also wait in tribush if you think the enemy top went for a jungle leash and waste his flash or even kill.

If you don't feel confident to fight or just want to be safe, farm farm farm. Remember that if the enemy wants to fight, think of whether he could be baiting or not. If he thinks he can f*ck you but can't, show him the god power of GP and accept the fight. If you hit auto Q auto he is dead already.

Save your W. DON'T OVERUSE IT, and time it right or just wait until it's 2 or 3 ranks to win exchanges and survive fights.

If you don't max Q, don't try to harass for little damage. You want to use it to bust the enemy in auto Q auto combos as I said if you can sneak into melee range.

Mid Game

You can't really lose lane and should focus properly on CS. If you have , you can unleash to power of thunder god Zeus and charge stacks and Q (your Q applies it!). Now your Q harrass isn't wasted (lightning chain + even 20% crit chance) and you can all-in even harder against a chunked enemy after.

If you have dominated your lane or managed to shove against an enemy that has bad waveclear, you can make a dragon call (if it's alive) and head bottom. If you are stuck to your tower, you can just assist with ulti at the dragon, or just assist your team in general with it (mid/bot/jungle fights).

Late Game

With how tanky you are now and how strong your damage is you can force fights really well. Find a good balance between peeling for your squishies and pressuring their squishies. Remember that you are Zeus and that everyone should kiss your ass while you zap them with your god powers and oranges.

Remember that you aren't very strong in the late game, and you never want to go for the late game for no reason. Try to end as fast as possible. This means you should force fights when you feel strong. Note that, with how the game works, two small advantages can beat one big advantage, and two big advantages will destroy everything. As an example, if you manage to get baron or win a teamfight, make it your first goal to work towards making that worth it. Killing people means you should try to go for objectives, and objectives mean you can get more objectives. In the end, the objectives mean you can end the game or at least make a very big impact play. TL;DR DON'T EVER WASTE YOUR TIME JUST TRY TO END ASAP ALWAYS.

Team Fights

DESTROY EVERYTHING WITH YOUR GOD LIGHTNING. JUST GO IN. DON'T BE A PUSSY. I am serious. The strength of GP in fights is that he leads the team very well with his E, then ignored roots/stuns that attempt to stop him and slows the enemies with his ult. He then pressures and peels very hard with his passive (mallet as well, maybe), E and ult situationally. You really want to make the enemy think that you're crazy and willing to go balls DEEP. This will scare and disperse the enemy, often letting you take advantage of that by surprising them with how tanky you are and the damage you can deal with so little items.

Tips and tricks

  • After your first back you have no excuse not to buy at least one ward. If you can't afford an item plus a ward you should always get a ward instead. It's not worth risk dying for just one item. There is no excuse to this and farming extra creep with your Q will always give you more than enough gold to buy ward.
  • Once you get you might worry about pushing tje creep wave BUT with how this item works with your Q, when you shoving the lane and making the enemy CS at tower you harass for free by using the passive proc on Q.
  • Against weak early champs such as Vlad or Rumble you should always force the level 1 fight if you can initiate in melee range. This mean you will instantly get your auto Q auto (3 stack = 21% slow + DoT). Almost nobody can survive this, especially in combine with ignite. If they try to flash, they are slowed and you can flash right after for the kill.
  • Always look for the enemy jungle. If he is bot and you feel like you can win a fight, go for it. These are the things that make you win the lane.
  • On blue side top vs. strong early lvl jungle or losing lane purple side you can get enemy creep to your tower with a simple trick. Just walk to enemy laner and let him auto you 1-2 time for free (but make it look like you are just misposition by walking back a bit after). Now your creeps will aggro him because of his auto while his creep hit your wave - so your wave will take damage while his wave does not and push toward you! Repeat to unbalance creep wave and get double enemy creep wave on one ally creep wave at your tower and CS safe early at tower with your (easiest f*ck CS in LoL).
  • GP is one of the safest pick with this build and skilling. High sustain champs can be even with, low sustain champs are outsustained and no sustain champs get f*cked. Don't be afraid to pick GP with this style/meta of playing - if you play properly you should always go even (unless you get camp by sololane + jungle then GG).

Final Comments

Thank you to my friend Jin for making the basic guide so I can translate for him in English. We hope people will see this GP style and try it out and revolution their GP play! Now go f*ck some people in rank!

THX!

NOTE: I am stopping to update this guide. I have much work on school and I can't play LoL too much. Thank you for using this GP build and for making this a very popular guide (1 milion view). I am very happy people have success! If there are ever new items or a new type of champ meta remember the basic idea of this GP style. I think GP will always be a strong champion if they keep his basic skills the same (maybe they buff him because he is not popular??). Just use the same meta with on-hit/AS to keep big pressure on enemies with your passive slow + DOT big + tanky items. GP does not need much dmg to put pressure just some AS and something to fix his creepwave farming so he can push well and help the team!

having a lot of trouble with jax, you crush him early but once he gets a cutlas he can just outsustain your harass and can farm with impunity because he wins all ins unless you harass him down which you cant do because he has cutlas.

How do you beat trynd once he has his first item?

@BlueBuffChiller: I don't agree with you but I have made tips for Fiora.

People may expect it but it is still a strong power for early fighting. People fall for Riven all-in as well even if they know how OP her early lvl is. Fort pot it still + direct HP which is difficult to calculate and can save you from other early all in. It's your choice in the end which I agree and it's risky but that's the point.

Great guide, i only play GP like this in ranked and got a 70%+ winrate!

But 2 things i noticed from my experience:

First, I don't think the buffed Fiora has deserved "lol"-status now, i actually got quite some problems against her, when she builds Hydra. Some matchup tips for her would be cool :)

Second, I do not think that fort pot is really good anymore. because most palyers know about gp's dueling strength early game and will play safe (if they have half a brain ;)) and wait for jungle ganks. So you either don't get much from your pot or you sit on it for quite a while.

@WhatAChamp: That's ok use what work for you.

@m3u: Look some previous msg here from me. I explain this was actually the originally jin (original creator of this guid) and he wanted to update it but he wanted a better English translation, so I took his draft and translated it better than he could (my English is much better than his English). The reason I couldn not update that guide is because he does not know his account info now.

This guide is not even yours. You've just re-written one of the outdated guides on this site. ffs. /guides.php?g=35194-walkmen-gangplank-build-guide
