Introduction

Why Play Shaco?

The main answer is laughing when you can 2 - 3 shot squishy or half tank characters such as Xin Zhao or Jax. He is by far the most skilled champion to play late game when you can step it up and nuke down 2 enemies hitting you at the same time.

You might think from past games or experience - Why Shaco? He dies in a few hits and does no damage what so ever. I go into a brush and half my HP gets taken away by his boxes.

There are many different ways to play classes and characters, but from personal experience, this by far is the best way. You are an assasin, Your job is to nuke not waste time setting up useless traps, doing next to no damage, or attacking super fast.

One attack can take almost half of your opponents HP away and make them run to a tower, no AP rubbish here. Shaco is one of the hardest hitting champ in LoL. Following this guide and understanding a few basic things will allow you to win the majority of your games with Shaco

Heres a little insight to a general set of games using him

This shows both bad and good games, As previously stated it depends if the team go for you at the start or leave you alone. That first kill does change alot of things for shaco. (The 'bad' game is at the very bottom)

Runes + Explanations

There is much debate what runes is to be used.

Early game, it's reccomended that you have first blood therefore you require as much damage as you can get, This also has to be viable mid game and late game.

Here is my personal rune set for Shaco: Attack Damage / Armour / Cool down reduction

  • Greater Mark of Attack Damage - More damage to minions / players
  • Greater Seal of Armor - More useful for jungling with low hp
  • Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction - Faster jungling and cool down
  • Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage - More damage to minions / players

Optional: If you prefer Armor Pen Marks + Armor Pen Quints over Attack Damage, that is fine; I personally don't use it because it doesn't significantly affect my early game ganks, but it will help if your enemy has a lot of armor.

NOTE: This is MY rune set, and when I say 'MY', I don't mean to take all the credits for it. If you're a new Shaco, use whatever runes you have at your disposal to create as much damage as you can, you don't need to spend all your IP to have this exact rune set as I do.

9 Utility
Offense Tree

Offense tree benefits mostly for shaco, Extra damage is always welcome and late game that extra % damage and % Armor Pen really does scale up.

Summoner's Wrath: Deal 2% more Damage, Crucial for your +

Sorcery:Lower cooldown for

Brute Force: Scales and helps dishing out tons of damage

Martial Mastery: Additional Damage for + dealing tons of damage

Executioner: Additional Damage for + and dealing tons of damage

Spell Weaving: Helps with ganks

Blade Weaving: Increases the damage on your + and dealing tons of damage

Warlord: Increases the damage on your + and dealing tons of damage

Devastating Strikes: Rips through armor and magic resist to dish out tons of damage

Havoc: Increases the damage on your + and dealing tons of damage
You want the highest degree of damage output as possible when you gank
Just ask Phreak about this build

Utility Tree

Going utility tree and grabbing the 1 point in extra minion buffs allows that box a second more for fear, This is useful for rushing towers and escaping / farming.

Phase Walker: Faster recall, faster ganking

Fleet of Foot: Allows you to get behind their back faster under Deceive

Meditation: Helps with Shaco's mana pool for jungling

Scout: Casts oracle trinket farther to avoid detection

Runic Affinity Longer buffs for Shaco

You may have notice that I place no skill points into the defense tree. Because Shaco has a low hp pool and is squishy regardless, the defense tree is useless. Your job as an assassin is to get in -> nuke -> get out

NOT Get in -> Nuke -> Stay -> Get focused -> Die -> Respawn

Summoner Spells + Explanations

Standard
- This allows you to make bigger ganks ie. Deceive from further away, Escape more easily and chase.
(Optional) - If you prefer Flash over Ghost, nothing wrong with that, it's personal preference.

YOU ARE A JUNGLER!

Playing an assasin you may have the thought, "If they run then why not Exhaust? Why not Ignite?"

Its simple, You will have more movement speed than 90% of the characters you come against so there's no need to slow them down. Having Trinity Force and Boots of Mobility and 1 / 4 hits for a slow along with red buff, you shouldn't have any problems keeping up with them. There is no need for Ignite with shaco, If they manage to survive with HP, Use your Hallucinate clone to tank the turret, Deceive in or Ghost in, Two-Shiv Poison and out the other side.

Tron's Personal Shaco
Over the years, I have used many different items to maximize Shaco's gameplay and viability as the game progresses.
I no longer use Spirit Of The Elder Lizard for reasons I will thoroughly explain later, but for completeness I will explain my most reliable build for Shaco.

Starting items: health-potion5 OR hunters-machetesight-wardhealth-potion2

Depends on your experience in the jungle.
I prefer starting off with the sight ward simply for map awareness on their jungler.

Old Core items: trinity-forceinfinity-edgelast-whisper

Last item(s) (situational): the-bloodthirsterguardian-angelbanshees-veilenchantment-homeguard

NOTE Brutalizer: I always find myself needing the early armor penetration and attack damage to gank tanky enemies early game. Let alone this is also cheaper, making it my Go-To replacement for Spirit of the Elder Lizard. The Cooldown Reduction is also nice. Brutalizer then builds into
The Black Cleaver. This combined with Last Whisper renders Armor useless against Shaco, thus allowing you to dish out tons of damage.
In which case, start with the "Tron's Personal Shaco" build and continue like so:

-> Continue on as normal
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items

The Brutalizer & The Black Cleaver 3000g

Blade of the ruined king 3200g

Less cost, more benefit. You will not be farming creeps in lane until mid game so the attack speed is not required. Also, Shaco's job is not to stay in the fight and dish out damage. Do what an assasin have to do; Get in, Get out.The cost at the start game makes The Brutalizer the best choice. The Attack damage and armor penetration early -- this will help you gank tanky champions with ease early game; the cooldown reduction helps with Shaco's cooldown Also, The Black Cleaver consists of small parts making it easy to roll which sharpens your armor penetration and attack damage.

Boots

Some people will take Berserker's Greaves. Keep in mind you only need a FEW hits. Most of the time, you Deceive behind them, auto attack, use your throw a shivy, plant a Jack in the box, Hallucination, and you got the kill. This makes the Berserker's Greaves useless.

Boots of Mobility vs Boots of Swiftness

There is much debate as to which one you should get. Boots of Mobility allows for faster travel time resulting in more ganks. However, it's movement speed is not constant when you are in combat. Thus, chasing may be a bit of a problem if they somehow survive with little hp.
With Boots of Swiftness, your travel time will be slower, but your movement speed will be constant, even in combat.
Keep in mind that you have Trinity Force, Ghost for movement speed, Red Buff for slow, and team-mates at your side.

Using Deceive to close the gap or walk though walls, makes Shaco's movements even quicker. It takes practice to get the hang of it and not to stop dead once you hit Deceive.

It all boils down to personal preference; If you are confident in being able to gank a lot and get the kill, Boots of Mobility is for you. If not and you feel that you may have to chase a bit, get Boots of Swiftness.

Trinity Force

Sheen - More Damage / Extra mana / More shivy and box damage
Phage - HP / More Damage / Slow
Zeal - Movement speed / Attack speed / Crit

You are Shaco, you don't need attack speed since you won't be staying in the fight for a long time. Trinity Force maximizes your burst damage on Deceive + Backstab so you only need FEW hits on the enemy.
The factor of more HP and Attack speed doesn't really matter since you can easily Deceive away, but the slow is nice.
Also, it consists of small parts which is easily affordable at any point which allows you to build according to how the game is going.

Infinity Edge

Infinity Edge - Crit / Damage / Extra crit Damage. Enough said? Deals a ton of damage.

Combined with your Deceive + and Trinity Force, this maximizes your burst damage from one skill, thus allowing you to easily burst down their carries. This item is a MUST when it comes to Shaco

Last Whisper

Last Whisper - Extra Penetration allows you to take on more tanky champs and rip through them. Also helps maximize your burst damage on Deceive + Backstab and Trinity Force.

Last item(s) (Situational)

Very rarely do you have to get a last item since you are very caught up in the game. However, if it comes down to it, buy an item according to the game. I personall buy an item that gives more Damage and/or, lifesteal for tons of damage.
Bloodthirster is a good one.
Also Hextech Gunblade if you prefer that over Bloodthirster
Maw of Malmortius is a no no. You have a very low health pool as an assasin, you don't need this. If you're getting focused, get Banshee's Veil. More HP, More Mana, Spell shield.

You DO NOT need attack speed. What kind of assasin will you be if you are actually in the fight battling it out? I cannot stress this enough, attack speed is absolutely useless on Shaco.

Now before you start criticizing me, think about it. You are Shaco. Low HP pool. Insane amount of burst damage ( + + + ). Do you really need to a lot of hits???

Though it does make sense to get something like Statikk Shiv, Blade of the ruined king, Phantom Dancer, or even .You may think that Attack Speed helps you kill things faster, but ultimately, it only leaves you vulnerable to being focused. Versus their AD Carry, you're not going to outdamage them in a fight (that is, of course, if he/she is caught up in the game). Bursting them down in a matter of seconds is the way to go.
Guardian Angel isn't that bad if you are getting focused. The time it takes you to be revived is enough time for your Deceive to be up.

Skills + Usage

Backstab
Shaco deals 20% bonus damage when striking a unit from behind with his autoattacks or abilities.

Explanation:
This skill separates "Good" Shaco players from the "Bad" Shaco players. This skill is the KEY to successful ganks. There's a reason why Shaco is an assassin with Deceive.

Tip: ALWAYS Attack from behind. I cannot stress this enough, the 20% bonus damage along with a crit is crucial.
Deceive
ACTIVE: Shaco instantly blinks to a target nearby location and enters stealth for up to 3.5 seconds. His next auto-attack within 6 seconds is guaranteed to critically strike for modified base critical damage. Bonus critical damage from items, runes and mastery is applied for the full amount.

RANGE: 400
COOLDOWN: 11 seconds after exiting stealth
COST: 90 / 80 / 70 / 60 / 50 MANA
BASE CRITICAL DAMAGE: 140 / 160 / 180 / 200 / 220%

Explanation:
This is what makes Shaco, Shaco.
This can be used to juke, gank, and chase. Combined with Backstab, you are assured a kill. You want to max this after your Two-Shiv Poison. Because you're going to be ganking, you need as much damage output as possible, rather than planting boxes.

Tip: When running away, run in one direction, then deceive the opposite away. MOST players will keep running in your initial direction. This concept is called Misdirection; Real-Life Stage Magicians use this to accomplish an effect. Try using it over a wall
Jack In The Box
ACTIVE: Shaco creates a Jack in the Box at the target location with 150 health. It will stealth after 2 seconds and lasts a maximum of 60 seconds. When an enemy comes near the box activates and comes out of stealth, fearing nearby enemies briefly and attacking them for 5 seconds, dealing magic damage with its attacks. Casting Jack In The Box breaks stealth.

RANGE: 425
COOLDOWN: 16
COST: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 MANA
FEAR DURATION: 0.5 / 0.75 / 1 / 1.25 / 1.5
MAGIC DAMAGE: 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 (+ 20% AP)
TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE *ESTIMATE*: 315 / 450 / 585 / 720 / 855 (+ 180% AP)
TRIGGER RANGE: 300
SIGHT RANGE: 700 (estimate)
JACK IN THE BOX ATTACK SPEED: 1.6 (Attacks 9 times in 5 seconds)
JACK IN THE BOX ARMOR: 50
JACK IN THE BOX MAGIC RESIST: 100

Explanation:
Mainly used to jungle early game, but is amazing when ganking by placing it behind the enemy after you appeared from your Deceive.

Tip: It can be used as a ward (60 Seconds), as well as a way of closing your enemies escape routes in fights.
Two-Shiv Poison
PASSIVE: Shaco's attacks poison his targets, reducing their movement speed for 2 seconds. It also gives affected non-champion units a chance to miss their attacks.
ACTIVE: Shaco throws a dagger at a target enemy dealing magic damage and applying his slowing poison to them for 3 seconds. The passive is deactivated during the cooldown.

RANGE: 625
COOLDOWN: 8
COST: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 MANA
SLOW: 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30%
MISS CHANCE TO NON-CHAMPION UNITS: 20 / 22.5 / 25 / 27.5 / 30%
MAGIC DAMAGE: 50 / 90 / 130 / 170 / 210 (+ 100% AP) (+ 100% bonus AD)
MAGIC DAMAGE WITH BACKSTAB BONUS: 60 / 108 / 156 / 204 / 252 (+ 120% AP) (+ 120% bonus AD)

Explanation:
This helps significantly when it comes to ganking. Deceive, auto-attack, throw a Shivy, then plant a Jack in the Box.
The slow assures that your box will be settled down before the enemy reaches it. Along with your Hallucinate, it gains the slow as well.

Tip: This can be used to slow your enemy, to buy time for your Deceive when running.
Hallucinate
ACTIVE: Shaco disappears from the map and becomes untargetable for 0.5 seconds, then creates a clone of himself that will last for up to 18 seconds. The clone deals 75% of Shaco's damage and receives 50% extra damage. This clone deals 50% damage to towers and inhibitors. At the end of its duration or when dying the clone will explode, dealing magic damage to nearby enemies within 250 range.
LEASH RADIUS: 1125
COOLDOWN: 100 / 90 / 80
COST: 100 MANA
MAGIC DAMAGE: 300 / 450 / 600 (+ 100% AP)

Explanation:
There are so many uses for this skill. It can be used as a decoy, as well as in ganks. It's good to know that it also shares the passive of Two-Shiv Poison, which allows the clone to be a permanent slow.

Tip: Try using this as a way of baiting out your enemies' skills before going in for the kill.

Pros / Cons

Pros
1. Insane amount of burst damage
2. Game carry / changer
3. Best at escaping
4. Able to scout
5. Easy ganking
6. Tower pusher

Cons
1. Once your opponents realize you're opening numerous cans of whoop-ass, they will focus fire.
2. Extremely squishy
3. Most team fights will be 4 vs 5 with you hanging back waiting on the chance to pickup kills or kill the teams damage classes
4. Bad early game will affect you dramatically

Understanding Shaco

Jungling characters generally forget the purpose of what there ment to be doing, The concept behind this is to allow a solo lane the extra money from creeps and higher level at the start which could effect the game. You as shaco should be constantly watching the map and lanes to see who is missing and who could use help.

When it comes to ganking you have to follow a few basic rules.

1. Never gank without giving a heads up to the person / people in the lane.
2. Always come from a brush or over a wall to maximize the surprise
3. Interpret where the enemy will run, Using this to your advantage and placing a Jack In The Box will allow you the kill more easily and stop their escape.
4. Always come from behind, Extra damage boost is something in which you need to maximize in PVP at all times to deal a ton of damage and get first blood

So the game starts what should i do?

Start game broken down to simple steps

  • Buy Hunter's machete, Sight ward and 2x Health Potions
  • Run straight to Blue.
  • Alert your team to come from mid and bottom / top depending to guard you (have the other lane guard red)
  • Put 4-5 boxes at Blue IN THE CORNER (BEHIND THE GOLEM) at 0:56 until 1:48
  • Wait for Blue to spawn
  • SMITE BLUE.
  • Kill Blue Be sure to get behind it soBackstab kicks in. Then kill the lizard closest to the brush
  • Level up Two-Shiv Poison and kill the last lizard. Head straight to Wraiths.
  • Plant a 2 boxes OUTSIDE the spawn and kill the small wraiths first (Don't forget to use Two-Shiv).

Now you can head to Red. Plant 2-3 Jack in the boxes out of range.
Lure the elder lizard to the boxes and smite for kill.

Now you're ready for GANKING!
Inspect the map for an enemy overextending, and/or is half health.
Ping your team mate(s) to initiate, as they can see your orange cloud of poof from . Their attention will be on whoever is attacking them.
Use , get behind them, auto attack, THEN Two-shiv poison and immediately set a Jack in the box farthest away from the direction they are running. They don't have much of a choice than to run into the box or waste time and juke it.

Your aim is to get enough Gold to allow you to buy your Spirit Stone. If you fail to make first blood, you should be around 550-700 gold so a few creeps will get you Port back, get your Spirit Stone and boots, and see if there is anyone else to gank (over extended, near half health, etc.), if not, start jungling again.

IMPORTANT: If you see any enemy that is near death at their turret, you CAN kill him. Simply Pop Ghost, over the wall, auto attack, THEN Use Two-shiv poison and go out the other side.

Team Work

If you intend to play Shaco to his maximum potential, I advocate the use of a pre-made team and teamspeak. Having just that one person makes a huge difference when calling ganks.

Some people will tell you in various guides that shaco is team depended. Yes, a bad shaco will ultimatly leave you 4 vs 5 and 9/10 times loosing. Playing with AP shaco you are most likely to have this happen, He under-performs at level 13+.

Things you should have on your team

  • You (Shaco)
  • Tank
  • AD Carry
  • Support
  • A form of mass damage

Keep your team informed and ask them to keep you updated. Make sure you ping and not type when you do things. People tend to focus more on what their character is doing but the odd ping from no where makes them look. Do not forget this!

What to do when fighting

Offense

1. Deceive + Backstab. Stacked with , your kill potential increases significantly.

2. NEVER Deceive AND Two-Shiv Poison. you will miss out on that lovley .

3. Two-shiv poison and plant a Jack in the box behind them. Planting the Jack in the box behind them will make them do a 180 and get feared.

4. If they survived with little HP, use your Hallucinate and have it tank the turret (while of course, you and it are chasing). The turret is attacking the Clone. The Clone is in proximity to your enemy. What do you think will happen?

Defense
Harrass with your Clone if its 2 or 3 vs you. The damage from it will push them back a bit and also clear minions.

Two-Shiv Poison when possible and Deceive out if needed. You might use mana but this generaly for a short time before your team come to your rescue.

Always plant at least 1 Jack In The Box somewhere behind your turret. A Random ninja may tower dive or come out from over walls or behind you. This will fear and let the turret do it's job. Keep in mind that having boxes close to turret will allow minions or range attacks to damage or activate so placing them at a good postion will be your main focus.

Buffs
If possible always have red buff, During the lower levels you want to have blue buff up as much as you can. This allows easier map control, such as Deceiving over walls without worrying about using mana and the ability to farm minions with Two-Shiv Poison and Jack In The Box. The red buff will give more damage. Keep in mind it also slows. This should be your main focus and remember, there are 2 of these on the map!

Team Fights
Your Jack in the Box comes in handy in team-fights. Plant them in your enemy's escape routes.
Your Clone can be used to bait out their nukes. Simply hide in a brush, send it in, and watch as they nuke down your clone and take damage from it. I find it very funny when a Mordekaiser or Annie pop everything on the clone, leaving them vulnerable.

Things to remember

A few general things you should keep in mind when playing:

1. Always have MP for a Two-Shiv Poison and Deceive. Once you get to around level 12/13, you start to get your mana back more regularly.

2. When jungling, always use Jack In The Box when possible. Until you have Spirit of the Elder Lizard, Place boxes behind the creeps to turn around so your Backstab kicks in. Once you have Spirit of the Elder Lizard, still use boxes to add that extra damag and fear away from you.

3. Always have blue and red buff if possible

4. Understand that shaco is not a tank, Your Deceive only lasts for a few seconds, so stick near someone if you plan on going ahead.

5. Escaping. If your clone is ready and you use it to escape, run into a brush, Jack In The Box and Hallucinate. Send clone one way and run the other. The Person chasing is feared and sees two people running, he has to make a choice, 50% odds are good enough for me with the head start in the direction to your base.

6. When useing Deceive to escape, ALWAYS blink the opposite direction of which you're running. I see too many Shaco players running and Deceiving into one direction while their enemy catches up to them. They even get killed by random guesses (Varus, Ashe, Caitlyn, etc).

7. Your Hallucinate can make you disappear off the map. This can save you, when timed correctly, from and .

8. Always ping when ganking. If your team is near by and come from a bush, never stand somewhere out in the open. Put a box beside you while you wait to ward off people such as Evelynn and Twitch.

9. ALWAYS AUTO ATTACK AFTER A Deceive!, Never go staight for a Two-Shiv Poison unless you're Deceive to close the distance between you and your Opponent.

10. A good shaco will always fight from behind. After level 6/7, you can become sloppy and just auto attack from anywhere

Author's Message

NOTE: You have now reached the end of this guide; Shaco is now yours, make him yours. I haved used this guide for a few years now and with enough practice it can become a powerful tool that can be applied to a myriad of other areas in League of Legends. I shall leave it to you to discover these remaining secrets. It is my hope that by releasing this book to the public, others will master these techniques and take them in new directions. The techniques within this guide will not come easily, they will take time, many failures and persistence to perfect.
Thank you for your interest in my guide. I hope you find them useful.

By far the best Shaco build I have seen. I'm a gold 1 in promos for plat and I got Shaco a day ago and have played probably 8 games with him. My first game I carried pretty hard and this seemed to happen almost in every game. I went lizard, statik, bork, lw, boots somewhere in there, and last item was usually GA. I did have success with this build and my first plat promo game i went 10/0/8 with this build but... I saw this build and can safely say THIS GUY KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. By playing just 1 normal game I went 10/4/5 which is worse then 10/0/8 by far but... in the 10/0/8 game I started off 6/0/4 and you would think I would be able to carry the game hands down. I did my part didn't die got kills, assists, etc but I couldn't carry. With the sheen in the Tri force you do INSANE amounts of damage. I pretty much 1 shot the APC and could just deceive away. I used to max w 2nd but now seeing how much you use q the crit strike and mana cost are way effective then the "fear" from the w. I love this build and will run it all the way to diamond (I hope). As for BORK it's a good buy I just don't think it's worth the money when you can get a tri force, lw, ie, etc. What I do now is invade level 2 which is risky but I always tell me mid and top that if your lane comes follow them. Being in Gold 1 they usually listen. I got this champ a day ago if that and this build is amazing. Keep up the good work T.A. also if you could add me so I can see you play a game that would be awesome but if not its ok.

Thanks for this!

@Techziqoo
Yes sir, I will be sure to test out the FireTorch Upgrade
It seems very viable on Shaco, but I am still testing its compatability, and Cost & Use Effectiveness.
It means a lot that you made an account to comment
Will post a update regarding this soon :)

hey T.A. , great guide but ... your lifetime shaco stats... fake. 487 shaco games. 432 turrets destroyed. 3.2 destroyed average per game ? (...)
487 shaco games. 1022 deaths. 3.1 per game ? (...)
Btw, you would be far at the top list at lolskill.net with this. Never found you there since this guide was realeased.
bro, really, this guide WORKS, you dont need to put faked shit in it. it is a GOOD guide, but stop threating others who are reading your guide.

keep this up to date but... seriously, remove those faked shitty chapters. how about putting your real one's into it ? At least stop threating others. please.

You say that you start with a ward for more awareness on the enemy jungler. When and where do you usually put this ward? Do you usually try to counterjungle or you mostly stay in your jungle and gank often (I mostly do the latter when I play)? If you do counter jungle, maybe you could add a section on the subject for some tips on counterjungling. For the few times I tried counterjungling, I was either wasting a lot of time and XP or getting killed trying to 1 vs 1 their jungler...

Also, if you don't mind and if you are playing on the NA server (and still playing Shaco often enough), I would appreciate if you could add me only so that I could spectate you games and learn from your playstyle. My summoner name is Zarolos.

Lastly, as long as you can have a good start, I can now say after many games following the philosophy of this guide that Shaco can be very effective late game. It takes of lot of practice, timing and good positioning but you can literally 2-3 shots their ADC or AP carry which often is enough for your team to win teamfights. Thanks Tron for this excellent guide.

@Helioceratops First off and foremost, thank you for choosing this guide, sir :) I advise you to just ignore negative comments - You can start proving them wrong when you're in game. I've played
Ranked solo queue for a long time with Shaco so I understand your situation. Just keep practicing Ranked; You will start to develop skills and communication to deal with those type of situations. Very soon Shaco will be one of the best Champions in your Jungle Arsenal.

I wanted to say thank you for this guide, as it helped me personally become a MUCH better Shaco. In the beginning, I played attack speed Shaco, and had mediocre results. Now, I follow this build and quite literally carry every game (I'm talkin' 15/3/20 ish games). So thank you for the guide.

Also, I main jungle and am in silver, but often don't want to play Shaco because of how other people react ("Ugh, we need a tank" or "Shaco isn't viable PLEASE don't") and those sorta things. Seeing as you have him as your #1 picked champion, any advice on that, or should I just ignore it until the game starts? This makes me not want to play Shaco a lot of the time (atleast in ranked). Thanks for the guide, easily my best champion at the moment!

@Zarolos A *very* good question sir, as well as an important one; I've changed my Wriggle's Lantern to Spirit of the Elder Lizard. Although it costs 600g more, Spirit of the Elder Lizard now has more benefits than Wriggle's Lantern due to the meta changes. If you feel that you need map vision, you can always change your oracle trinket to a sight trinket (keep in mind that before trinkets were introduced, I didn't have oracle's Trinket, yet I still gank successfully).

As for Bilgewater Cutlass, I have played a few games today with it and here's what I have to say; It is gold efficient, and the active is a plus - Helps burst down my opponent - Love it.
I had to re-calibrate my starting items to fit with it (Long Sword + <Items>). I enjoy the extra damage the long sword gives to me at first gank, however, my jungling time has decreased significantly without machete + boxes. Also, after your first gank (most of the times you get first blood), you still won't have enough gold to complete the Cutlass so it will slow down the amount of times you can gank early game because you need to farm the gold required.
For me, I wouldn't replace Spirit of the Elder Lizard or the "old" Wriggle's Lantern with Cutlass, but I would consider replacing my Bloodthirster for Cutlass (which can build into hextech gunblade).

Be Well Sir :)
