Introduction

Hi. I'm Heartbeat, from the formerly Team MRN. I'm also a high-ELO ranked player, who has three accounts in diamond 1 currently. I've played three roles competitively (mid/ad/support) and i consider myself to be a very versatile player with a good understanding of this game. I'm currently playing as a sub for Team Dignitas.

Alrighty, let's talk abuot the newest, coolest champion in League of Legends, Lucian!

pros:
  • Great wave clearing abilities
  • Has a mobility dash skill
  • Ultimate deals massive single target damage
  • passive let's you scale into late game
  • Incredibly fun to play
  • Has a reset-ability if kills a target.
  • strong early/mid/late (all) game.

cons:
  • can miss despite being a target skill.
  • are skillshots, meaning you can miss.
  • cannot auto attack while casting

Runes

Let's talk about the most efficient runes to run on Lucian. These are from my personal experiences that I've had with playing Lucian, and these rune recommendation is from the successes that I've had. It's natural to disagree with another person's runes - i personally disagree with a lot of people's rune set ups. Use what you feel is best!

Marks

I recommend Attack Damage marks. Your passive, Q,W, and R all scale off of your AD. This means AD marks will bring out the maximum damage potential as a Lucian. Not to mention you will be able to last hit creeps in lane much easier, and do more damage with your auto attacks during duels and trades as well.

Seals

Flat armor seals are core to have on an AD carry because without it you will be taking massive damage from the opponent AD carry whos most definitely going to be stacking AD. These will let your trades and duels be more forgiving, and let you outlast the other AD much easier.

Glyphs
I recommend taking MR/lvl glyphs if against a non heavy magic damage bottom lane, and flat MR glyphs if youre against a heavy magic damage bot lane such as a Corki/Sona. This again is for you to outlast as much as you can in lane, so that you wont be forced to go back too often. You will need to stay in lane for as long as you can to farm as much gold as possible.

I want to talk a little bit about mana regen glyphs - by sacrificing a bit of your magic resistances, you can use mana regen glyphs instead. Personally I've had more success using mana regen runes on most mana heavy champions - and this also lets me take 9 points into defensive tree without worrying about not having enough mana regen for laning. If you feel like the enemy team has multiple AP assassins then you should definitely take the most MR as possible from runes - otherwise, you should try out mana regen glyphs.

Quints
You can choose to either go with 2x Life steal quints and 1x AD quint, or just pure 3x Life steal quints. I do recommend at least 4% lifesteal because it will let you stay in lane MUCH longer than if you take just flat AD quints all the way. If you mistrade or get harassed down, Lifesteal Quints will let you stay in lane for an extended amount of time as long as you keep auto attacking.

These masteries are done to maximize Lucian's damage output as a marksman. Because Lucian is slightly different from traditional marksman that solely rely on auto attacks for damage, I put the two points for spell/blade weaving because of how Lucian is played with combining skills with auto attacks. Other than these minor changes, everything else is similar to the traditional marksman masteries of going 21/9/0.

the 9 points in defense tree is great for laning phase as the reduced damage taken from champions is good for dueling, and the health is always really strong. Some people like the 3% max health mastery, but I think 2 armor is better for early game. There are miniscule differences between the two, so pick what you think is better!

Summoner Sets

Primary Set
I recommend taking Flash because you're an AD carry and you will need this ability as your last ditch effort to stay alive. You can also use this aggressively to make sure you get a kill. Remember that you can ALSO use this to re-position yourself so that your ultimate line of fire will hit the target you want to hit.
I like Barrier because although Lucian does have a dash along with Flash to escape from stuff, Barrier gives you approximately a Giant's belt worth of HP late game which is really big. For an AD carry, survival is priority and nothing will increase your survivability more than barrier.
Flash & Cleanse
Cleanse is a great summoner spell to have if the enemy team is carrying way too many CC abilities. If they have over 4~5 stuns/slows/snares then you might want to consider getting cleanse, or you'll just be an easy target for the enemy team.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Default Starting Build
The best starting items for Lucian is the Doran's blade + one health potion. The recent season 4 patch made Doran's blade cheaper, hence you're now able to buy an additional potion! Doran's blade gives you health, AD, and health on hit, which are all extremely strong for early game for a marksman. Along with lifesteal quints, you should be able to sustain yourself in lane long enough for your bigger items later on with a doran's blade and a vamp scepter early game.

As for trinkets, I think it's up to you to pick your yellow/red trinket. I usually see which one my support goes before picking mine. If my support goes red trinket, I go yellow trinket to cover for his lack of one ward, and if he goes yellow, then i opt to go for red to provide that vision control in lane.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
Many people have different builds from Lucian. I've experimented with a LOT of possible builds, and I'm currently very comfortable with this build. Let's talk about each item, and then talk about the other ones that aren't listed! Check out the other cooldown Lucian build listed in the second item's option!

- We all know Lucian's AD scaling on his skills (and his passive!) is EXTREMELY strong. Bloodthirster not only has the most AD on an item, but it also provides you with insane amount of lifesteal.

/ - Personally, I like Statikk Shiv more than phantom dancer on Lucian because Lucian casts a lot of spells while auto attacking, so attack speed isn't greatly favored for him, other than the fact that his ult scales off attack speed along with AD. So having Shiv will give you that intermittent burst from lightning occasionally while you're constantly spamming your skills with auto attacks in a teamfight. Not to mention, Shiv will help you wave clear.

- You should definitely get this as your third item because most of your damage is done through physical damage, which means you will need that armor penetration in order for you to be dealing damage against people who are building armor.

- Not the most important item on Lucian to rush, because attack speed is not a priority stat on Lucian. However, you should definitely upgrade it if you're forced to recall at 575~ ish gold and you have nothing else to buy.

- This item gives you the most damage output from your auto attacks more than any other item. Because this first item build prioritizes on regular marksman build, IE is crucial here to maximize your damage output!

- In most games you'll be facing opponents that will be bloodthirsty to kill you.. which means you have to defend yourself. Scimitar will give you a free cleanse, giving you the ability to outplay your opponents and be safe from suppression/CC. Remember not to cast it too early, or this item will be useless!

aaaaaand..

- I've switched to and from triforce multiple times. If you decide to put triforce on your build, you have to rush it to maximize it because it is an insane item to have going into mid game from the immediate damage spike that you get from auto attacks and spells. However, I find it extremely expensive to buy triforce and vamp sceptor to sustain yourself, opposed to a straight up blood thirster which is significantly cheaper than a triforce.

Situational Items

Guardian Angel
If you feel like there is NO WAY you can live.. for example, if you're against 5 assassins like akali zed irelia khazix or something and they ALL just zerg you every time. Then you should buy this item, as it will give you couple seconds on immunity in teamfights, so hopefully your team is able to kill them while they blew everything on you!

I believe there are two ways to level up Lucian. You will always be maxing Q first, and then you can either choose to max W or E next. So let's talk about the strengths/weaknesses of these two paths.

Of course, you will be leveling up your at levels 6, 11, 16 for the more dmgs.

First, I'll explain why should always be maxed first. At max rank, has a 5 second cooldown, which means every 5 seconds you will be able to use your passive. Not only that, but is your main wave clearing ability so maxing this ability will let you wave clear much faster. Not only that, but out of your three non-ultimate abilities, will also scale the hardest from the AD you will be getting throughout the game. These reasons are more than enough for every Lucian player to max Q first.

Personally, I recommend going for the >> priority order.

Why > ? This is because putting points into will make your burst skill combo deal more damage, as well as lower the cooldown on the ability. The only thing you benefit from leveling up is decreased cooldown, which at max rank is at 10 seconds, and the mana cost. To me, I feel like similarly to Corki who has a very long cooldown on his escape ability Valkyrie, Lucian should treat his dash ability similarly. As long as you're able to pre-position yourself well, one dash should be enough for you to survive along with Flash if needed. I'd rather much prefer the extra burst that comes from because not only does it help waveclear, but a lower cooldown on this ability means the more chances you'll be able to use it to kite aggressively/defensively using the movespeed bonus from the skill.

Ofcourse, maxing second before means you will have increased mobility, but that's the only reason. Remember that your dash resets if your ultimate kills something, so to me if I cant get that I'm still gonna have to wait an incredibly long time for my dash to come back again. So personally Id rather pay attention to my positioning harder so that I will be able to dish out more damage, while still keeping my self ready to change positions.

Skills

Lightslinger
This is a pretty nice passive to have on an AD carry, as this is your 'steroid' ability that lets you scale into late game. After you use a skill, your next basic attack will strike twice, with the second strike dealing reduced damage (which scales as you level). Ideally you will want to use spells between your auto attacks to maximize your DPS. Although Lucian does not have any steroids, this is a pretty cool passive that will significantly increase your damage output going into mid-late game.
Piercing Light
After a short delay, you fire a laser in the direction of the target you click on. Remember that it will always deal damage to enemies within a 1100 range line, so no matter how close/far your targets are, the line of fire will be the same. However, you can only target enemies that are within a 550 radius of you. This makes this ability quite tricky to use, but once you master it you will be able to use this to secure long-range kills. This ability not only gets more base damage with more levels, but the AD ratio also scales, which means this ability really attractive to max first.

Note: Although Q is a target spell, it can be dodged because of the short 0.4 second delay by side stepping.
Ardent Blaze
You throw out a shot that will explode on contact or at max range in a cross shape. Hit targets will be marked and if you hit marked targets (the mark is not consumed when you hit them) then you will gain 40 movespeed for a short time. This is not only a great AOE ability, but it also lets you kite much easier. Use this if youre trying to kite backwards, or to chase aggressively with the bonus movespeed gained.

note: your ultimate also benefits from the movespeed, so throwing out your W before starting your ultimate might help you pull some extreme backwards kiting or chasing potential!
Relentless Pursuit
Your repositioning move. Its very similar to Grave's Quickdraw ability, without the attack speed steroid. Remember that this ability is on a ridiculously long cooldown, so THINK TWICE before you use it. You can jump over small cliffs and walls using this abilities, so know where you can jump over!

Note: Its good to know that if you kill a target with your ultimate, then the cooldown on this ability refreshes - this can happen unlimited times!
The Culling
This is Lucians trademark ability, you will be channeling a line of fire and you will continuously fire at the same direction for 3 seconds. You can move/flash/E during the channel, but you will not be able to auto attack. The funny thing about this ability is that on top of scaling with AD and AP, it also scales with your attack speed. You will be firing more shots with more attack speed, so you will definitely be buying some attack speed so that your ultimate will be firing more shots.

Note: Remember to watch your enemies carefully on how they try to avoid your ultimate. You might need to use your dash or your flash to continue to keep them in line with the firing line.

Champion matchups

Caitlyn
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Caitlyn might be a bit hard at first because she simply outranges you. The only way you can duel with her is if you use your dash aggressively, but thats risky because she can just use her net to keep her distance.

You definitely out damage her after your first item. A really good tip against her, is to play aggressive when you know you can out-damage her, and even if she net's you you should be able to gap close using your dash, which cancels her slow from her net.
Lucian
Difficulty
Favors You
stay behind minions so you dont take poke, and you should be able to play against an Ezreal easily. Use your auto+Q+auto whenever you can, and just try to keep him constantly shoved to tower and poke him under tower.
Twitch
Difficulty
Favors You
Do fast and short trades against this guy, because extended trades will favor Twitch because of his expunge. You can eventually bully the twitch out of lane because you can cast your Q twice per Twitch's expunge cooldown. Take advantage of it! Avoid trading against him after level 6, and always becareful of his ability to go ambush you from stealth.
Vayne
Difficulty
Favors You
vayne counters Lucian very very hard. This is because her tumble can completely dodge your Q. Not only that she can tumble and go invisible at 6, which makes her an incredibly hard AD to lockdown with your ultimate. You can duel her early, but be extremely careful anytime after level 6.

Good Lane Partners

Let's talk a little bit about which supports Lucian synergizes well with, and which supports that Lucian might not synergize so well with.

//// - These supports have a great amount of CC. This means they will keep them in place for you to use your combo on them. Any type of supports that can keep the enemy locked down, you will have success with because at level 6, they will keep the enemies in place to get hit by your full channeled ultimate.

- Sona is one of those supports who can work with most AD carries. She will poke with you and sustain you throughout laning phase, and at level 6 you can just press R to win. :^)

- With lulu you will be instantly wave clearing using both your Q's, so this is a strong lane because of how easy it is. Press Q, push lane forever, and poke under tower. Easy!

- Nami's E will proc twice with Lucian's passive - OP! not only that but she provides sustain in lane as well as really strong CC (if she can land her bubble!). That's not all, her ultimate not only knocks people up but also SLOWS them - can't ask for a better set up for the Culling!

Early Game

Use your Autoattack + Q + autoattack to trade against the opponent bot lane. Try not to just waste all your mana from the start because remember your Q scales incredibly well with levels, hence if you don't have the mana to use it later in the laning phase then you're in trouble. Try your best to do short trades using your passive. If you get ganked, throw out a W, and try to kite using the additional movespeed - and if things look impossible then just use your dash to get out.

at level 6, you should be able to find yourself an easy kill if your support provides some form of CC, so try to coordinate a duel right as your hit 6.

the good thing about lucian is if you feel like you're in a losing lane, you can always just use your abilities to farm under tower, or just push endlessly if you ask your support to help you clear the wave instantly (most supports have some form of aoe ability that will help clear the wave, such as Lulu's Q or Zyra's E).

Mid game / Late Game + Teamfights

Lucian's midgame and lategame relies on how farmed you are. Your ultimate hyper-scales with AD and attack speed, meaning depending on if you finished that bloodthirster or not it will drastically change the DPs output of your ultimate. With some items its very easy for you to clear the wave and group up with your team. Remember that although Q is a very good poking spell, it still has a relatively short range (550) so try not to get caught just trying to poke with Q's.

try not to resort to split pushing rather than grouping up with your team (Lucian is a much stronger teamfight champion than a split pushing champion because he does not have any attack speed steroid).

When you hit late game, remember that you are the carry of the team and you should NOT get caught by any means. look at what the enemy team has, and respect the catch abilities and catch potential that the enemy team brings to the game. Don't stand bluntly in front, it's okay to stay back.

In teamfights, you want to open up with the Culling. If you bought your last whisper it should deal massive damage to whoever it's hitting, regardless of tank or not. The tricky part comes after you're done shooting your ultimate. Try to continue using your passive correctly using Autoattacks between spells. Remember to treat your dash very very carefully because of its long cooldown.

Conclusion

Hey, nice guide man, i like Lucian so much, he's strong and he's corebuild is flexible imo, but what you say about Iceborn Gauntlet and Manamune with Lucian, in my opinion, they're good "secondary" items (like you can take them after bt and phantom), but, what you say about it?

September 12, 2013 - 09:48 PM #6

i agree that what he needs is some cdr, but the builds that people are proposing aren't optimal imo. Just get the cdr in masteries and get cdr boots and you'll have 19% cdr, you can basically spam your spells at will for a max passive up time and still go straight for the BT/trinity/LW/IE build for the late game scaling. I like the cleaver and ghostblade ideas but it's far more worth it to have more crit and attack speed in the late game or have the chance for a defensive item.

September 2, 2013 - 09:50 AM #7

I think that instead of getting Blade of the Ruined King, Hextech Revolver is a better weapon because it optimizes the AP ratios on Lucian's 'W' and still gives life steal and ad also since the loss of as i pick up Phantom Dancer and Mercurial for more AD crit and AS but thats just me i find it works out really well.

August 31, 2013 - 05:40 AM #8

Can people not read or what? His ult DOES NOT PROC ON HIT EFFECTS. BotrK does not apply on his ult. Also, his ult scales better with AD than attack speed.

August 30, 2013 - 07:46 PM #9

Ruined King is the best item on him, his passive AND ult are on hit. He also scales good from AS.

August 28, 2013 - 07:03 PM #10

nteresting build: I think one thing's clear with lucian and that's that he builds far differently than typical ADC's due to being able to both benefit from CDR hugely and having the added bonus of being able to easily stack "on hit" effects (black cleaver).

With that said, I've found great value on him with a total build of: blood thirster (first), black cleaver, lucidity, triforce, ghostblade & infinity's edge (assuming you make it extremely late game). This build includes a steroid of AS (gb), gets you to 39% CDR and gives you a good deal of ARpen. For combos, I've found Q -> W -> Q -> E can be infinitely cycled once you max CDR. If we build him for 20% CDR and assume blue buff, you can open up some more options but I think that limits him to pubstomper as your mid will likely always receive blue.

With the above build, he gets around 404AD, 39% CDR (unless you want to run a few CDR glyphs to cap), 50% crit, and has 30 Arpen with the 25% from black cleaver stacked (easily done, with maxed CDR + passive) and has the ghost blade's steroid for extra team fight / in-lane "All in" potential. the order I've been doing is start doran's, build blood thirster, then go straight for ghostblade, after that I'll begin triforce. If you can enter a midgame fight with dorans, bloodthirster and ghostblade, you have pretty damn good kill potential with good chase from W + E + ghostblade use.
