1. Introduction!

Hi,

first of all, english is NOT my mother tongue, so be nice if you find any mistakes (tell me in the comments).
I am playing in EUW as "Chrazing" and Nidalee is my main. Currently I am sitting in gold 3 (by playing almost no rankeds) with maining mid. In s2 i played a lot of Nida in rankeds such as in normals (much more in normals) and i have about 200 games with Nidalee (total games played ~ 2300). I finished s2 with 1750 Elo. I want to share you my experiences and thoughts about Nidalee and how i think she is supposed to be played. So go ahead and read this wonderful guide for Nidalee, the Bestial Huntress. (If you want to learn Nidalee, you should read this Guide completely, there are many things you might not know.)

2. Summoner Spells



Explanation:

Most efficient way to deal dmg while juking around.

Possible summonerspells for Nidalee:

: Having a jump before lvl 6 safes your live because you dont have any jump in human form. Also with lvl 6 and your as (the jump) + you can initiate on a low hp enemy when they try to flee from you. Or, the other way around, you can flee if there is a lvl 6 who wants to penetrate you with his own spear and then dunks you.

: Additional damage output, very useful in early game fights or as a finisher. I prefer it on 90% of the champs I play.

: Possible for bursters like Zed who take you down in 3 sec. Personally i dont like barrier because I always forget it or I use it to 'finish enemys' because I thought I got ignite.

: For a heavvy cc midlaner like Cassiopeia (NOT AGAINST MALZ, because you cant cleanse out there).

: Maybe, never tried it. Chasing you should be impossible while chasing ppl is easy as fuck. But care, ghost doesnt give you a suprise moment.

3. Masteries (Vs: AP, AD or Hybrid)

Here are the masteries I use against different mid-matchups: vs AP,vs AD or vs Hybrid

vs AP: (e.g. Ahri, Twisted Fate etc.)

NOTES: For me, going 21/6/3 is the best way to go with nidalee. Take the mana-regen in utility with all 3 points to spam your spears and heal like a baws. And because you got magic resist in runes the 3rd point in MR is not as important as the mana-regen.
You really need the 2 points in butcher (+4 dmg against minions/monsters) to last hit properly under tower. Otherwise its almost impossible on the first 5 levels to get any cs without using abilities.

Vs AD: (e.g. Zed, Talon etc.)

NOTES: Pretty similar to above, but going armor instead of magic resist. The reason here I take 3 points for armor and not 2 in MR like against AP is because you are much more vulnerable against AD, so you really need this armor.

Vs Hybrid: (e.g. Akali or Jax (yes, I had him mid once, I didnt like it))

NOTES: These are my Offtank AP masteries. Going more tank with the most necessary offensive points. It's important to get this 8% mPen increasing your magical dmg by a huge amount (in particular against tanks). Also you got armor, magic resist and HP + %-damage decrease which helps you against an akali. Unluckily you dont have the mana-reg so watch your mana!

4. Runes (Vs: AP, AD or Hybrid)

Again, 3 different runebuilds to use: vs AP,vs AD or vs Hybrid

Vs AP

NOTES:
Marks (red): 9 * Magic Penetration = 7,8 mPen
Seals (yellow): 9 * Manareg / level = 11 Manareg at level 18
Glyphs (blue): 9 * Flat magicresist = 12 Magic resist
Quintessences (purple): 3 * Flat AP = 14,85 AP

In order to spam spears, heal, and not dying we go for mPen, manareg for constant throwing spears, magic resist to survive early trades and some AP for more dmg. This should be a standard runesite for most AP-Carrys.

Vs AD

NOTES:
Marks (red): 9 * Magic Penetration = 7,8 mPen
Seals (yellow): 9* Flat armor = 13 armor
Glyphs (blue): 9 * Abilitypower / level = 28 AP on lvl 18
Quintessences (purple): 3 * Flat manareg = 3,8 Manareg

Here a bit different to the vs AP runes. Because of you need the armor on yellow, you take AP on blue and Manareg on Quints. Take mPen as before to do more dmg with your spears.

Vs Hybrid

NOTES:
Marks (red): 9 * Magic penetration = 7,8 mPen
Seals (yellow): 9* Flat armor = 13 Armor
Glyphs (blue): 9 * Flat magic resist = 12 Magic resist
Quintessences (purple): 3 * Flat AP = 14,85 AP

To hold them a bit away we take our AP quints and mPen marks out. Now we go armor seals and MR-glyphs to survive any trade you do. (usually)
But care, here we dont have ANY manaregen (not even in masteries) so survive the lvl 6 full combo akali. Take asap (when you can effort it) to get your manaregen.

5. Skills + Explanation

Passive: Prowl

Moving through brush increases Nidalee's movement speed by 15% for 2 seconds.

Explanation:
Pretty useless in laningphase, but when it comes to ganking or hunting people Nidalee turns into a little Warwick. You just need to touch the brush and get MS for 2 seconds, so if you leave the brush you get still MS for 2 seconds. And this is why you can't catch Nidalee in the Wild. With Punce (the Jump of Cougar) you should be able to rush from brush to brush without loosing your passive.

Q: Javelin Toss / Takedown

Human: Nidalee tosses her javelin, dealing 55 / 95 / 140 / 185 / 230 (+65% of ability power) magic damage on impact (deals up to 250% damage the further away the target is).

Cougar: Nidalee's next attack deals additional damage based on how low her opponent's life is.

Cooldown 7seconds
Cost 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90mana
Range 1500


Explanation:
Javelin: This why people say Nidalee is broken/OP/FCK SPEARSSSR. This is one of the spells where you just need to hit ONE to change a whole fight, mostly even before it starts. If you got your it's usually enough to hit a tank once or twice to shut him down so he wont initiate. Landing a spear on a squishy target makes their healthbar getting more than 4/5 red.

Takedown: This spell is almost the same as Elises Q in spider form, BUT it procs lichbane and other onhit-effects, so i would call it much more broken. Btw there is a nice Bug you can see in the Video in the Tips and Tricks section (which makes this spell even more op).

W: Bushwhack / Pounce

Human: Nidalee lays a trap that deals 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+40% of ability power) damage over 2 seconds, reveals the target, and reduces their armor and magic resistance by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 12 seconds. Traps last for 4 minutes.

Cougar: Nidalee lunges forward, dealing damage to surrounding enemies.

Cooldown 18seconds
Cost 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120mana
Range 900


Explanation:
Bushwhack: One of the secret spells which nobody really understands. It can hit more than one target, gives you vision for 12 seconds and decreases the resists of everyone who runs over it. DONT UNDERESTIMATE THIS.

E.g. you are tank and have 200 armor and 150 magic resist. You run over a trap (lvl 5) and look what happenes to your resistences:

200 - (200/100 * 40) = 120 armor left
150 - (150/100 * 40) = 90 magic resist left

Try to be tanky now!

Punce: This is your ability why Nidalee makes everyone fear the wild. a little flash every 4 seconds while you deal a decent amount of damage + you stack your . Because Cougar abilities dont cost mana you can spam your punce like Amy Winehouse sniffing. In the Tips and Tricks section there is a video in which you can see every wall you can jump over.

E: Primal Surge / Swipe

Human: Nidalee heals an ally champion for 50 / 85 / 120 / 155 / 190 (+70% of ability power) and grants them a 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60% attack speed for 7 seconds.

Cougar: Nidelee claws at enemies in front of her.

Cooldown 10seconds
Cost 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 140mana
Range 600


Explanation:
Primal Surge: Many Nidalee players always heal themselves or the fulltank while their adc is dying. But in higher ranks you really should heal him, even if he is full health, because giving a 60% attackspeed is much more worth than healing the ignited tank.
Keep in mind that healing someone can be a danger for you, because your has a low range and when somebody needs help you need to get close to him.

Swipe: With your and (both Cougar form) you can clean ranged caster minions and later with much AP and both on rank 5 you can clean melee minions in one combo.
This spell is your 'range' finisher on , because your enemy doesnt need to sit on your face to hit him.

R: Aspect Of The Cougar

Passive: Each additional rank increases the effectiveness of Nidalee's cougar abilities.

Nidalee transforms into a vicious cougar, gaining 20 movement speed and a new set of abilities.

Cooldown 4seconds
Range 20


Explanation:

Cougar op, no mana cost on any spell, more movement speed for chase or escape, finisher spells inside. No more to explain.

6. Item Builds (which i recommend to use)

This topic will be short, because there is not much to explain.

First of all, we analyse the Final Item Build mentioned above:

-> This makes you run (without lichbane) 405 in Cougar form, so fast cat incoming. Also it gives you 15 mPen, which increase your dmg output a bit.




-> Gives you much AP + 30% more. Cool item right? Thats why you get it.




-> was built out of to keep your mana relatively high, even without blue. Also it gives a shield which blocks about 300-400 dmg.




-> Must have item. How you want to shutdown tanks when they dont run into your traps?




-> As mentioned, your Takedown procs Lich Bane, which increases your damage drastically. Because of your Takedown scales with ad, you need Lich Bane to deal dmg with him.


Now we have 5 must have items. We can choose wisely the 6th and final item to make our build shine like a diamond player. This item has to be situational.

When you are owning, get , because nobody can run away from you if you hit them once.

If you need magic resist, i recommend or .

When you need armor, there is no way around .

And if you get wrecked both in physically and magical, get . This item makes you untargetable for some seconds so you can calm and let your Cougar cd come down. Also your team can focus the ppl who wanted your ass in time.


IF YOU ARE REALLY OWNING OR YOU WANT SOME FUN, buy to feel like Teemo if someone steps into your traps. Also it gives a littlebit of extra mPen and Health, so its ok too when you get it when you are sure you dont die in teamfights.

7. Tips and Tricks (and bugs) for Nidalee

Standard combo
When you are in human form be sure to use all of your spells before swapping into cougar.
So your combo is: -> on yourself if you are not full health -> (Be sure to watch your enemys running path. If he is standing still, place it under his ass, if he runs, place it where you think he will be in 1.5sec) -> Switch into Cougar -> jump on him with -> instantly Swipe -> and finally take him down . If enemy is not dead, switch to human form and spear him again.

Hidden passive: Prowl

Nidalee's Prowl grants her the power of a "cougar". Nearby allied champions gain +5 experience every 5 seconds if they are a lower level than Nidalee.

Explanation:
Not much to explain. Gives your allies some EXP when they are lower than you :D

To do this, you need to wait for your auto attack to land and exactly when it lands switch to and Takedown as fast as you can. Then you can do a ranged Takedown.

How to hit spears!

This Video is not by me (by minorutono, all Copyrights to him), but i think it shows well how one spear can take someone out of fight. Also you see some nice spears and how they are supposed to be thrown.

8. Early, Mid and Lategame with pros and cons

Early game: (pre lvl 6)

Here are some pros and cons about Nidalee's early game:

Pros:
  • Decent sustain on lane
  • Hitting two lvl 2 will make your opponent unable to fight you

Cons:
  • Hard to last hit under turret
  • You can't really push your lane
  • Very vulnerable to ganks
  • Almost no 1v1 or fight potential

Explanation:

Now we see why you get on lvl 1. When the game starts, buy as fast as you can and place traps on the sidebrushes on the site of the enemy red (look at the picture underneath) until blue spawns. You place them there because usually a jungler (who starts blue) comes mid after his red, so you trap on the red side. Also whenever you have up, use it where you feel like. But i recommend always to have some traps in the midbrushes.
Due your spear needs rank 2 to deal decent damage, you are very weak until lvl 3 or 4 and you cannot fight without loosing trades. You need to stay back and try to push against your enemy because if he pushes you its almost impossible to get any cs under turret. If that happens, use your on the caster minions to last hit them when the turret attacked them once.

Mid game: (lvl 6 - ~12)

Again some pros and cons:
Pros:
  • Good waveclear
  • Ganking is very easy
  • Getting ganked should be easier to avoid
  • Your spears should deal at least 1/3 when at high range
  • Good fighting potential
  • Jumping through jungle is fun!
  • Good sustain
  • Your heal starts to heal something
  • You can do bluebuff alone at lvl 6

Cons:
  • Do not underestimate ganks just because you have a jump. Any root or enemy standing in your face can make your punce work against you.
  • Not really tanky
  • You cant 100 -> 0 an enemy (only if he is squishy) in one combo
  • Manacosts increase, so you need blue!

Because you have 3 more spells now your whole potential has increased by a lot. You can jump, do playz and gank very easily, while avoiding ganks should be much easier now due to your jump. Also your spears start to deal hard damage. But you are not really tanky, so dont get shutdowned by going too deep. Also clearing waves is relatively quick now, so keep doing your lanefarm and go to your wraiths or gank!

Late Game: (lvl 13 - 18)

Pros:
  • Landing a spear can change a whole situation in your favour
  • Your is at its full effectiveness
  • You heal about 500 + giving 60% attackspeed
  • Still great takeout and chasing potential as well as your cleanup


Cons:
  • Almost everything depends on your -skills
  • Cougar gets less utility compared to
  • Wrong positioning makes you an easy target
  • Doing mistakes makes you useless and your team fights without you -> 4v5
  • Being behind makes it hard to help your team well


You really need to land your Javelins now. If you dont, you are useless. Because everyone is tanky and you are not, you should get them low before fighting them in Cougar. So keep hitting your spears and you win fights even before they start. Make sure to have to increase your damage on tanks as much as possible.

9. How to Team Fight!

So, the team fights begin.

When Riot releases the replay function, i will add some examples of how to act in a Teamfight.

Until then, you are lucky to read my little Chapter to How Team Fight:

Team Fighting is something Nidalee doesn't like. Nidalee likes throwing spears to poke. And that is what you need to in teamfights. Spam your Abilities from as far as you can to maximise your damage output.
