Champion Matchups

Introduction

Lucian is a very fun and unique ADC. He is an ADC that can do extremely well without having to go with the "standard" stale ADC builds! He is an ADC duelist with a mildly high skill cap, and this guide is catered to that style of play. If you are looking for an easy champion to faceroll with stale ADC builds, then play Vayne or Cait.

This guide is going to introduce you to an extremely fun and competitive way to play The Purifier.

Me: I don't play games for a living. I am not a Diamond I player. This guide is for the 99.99% of us who aren't. I am a Gold player, and I consider myself to be a pretty darn good player who prioritizes having fun and thinking outside of the box that LoL players are forced to play inside.

I hope you enjoy!

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

The best. There is no need for explanation.

Team Fights

*KEEP DUELING! As it is with all ADC's, you have a bulls eye right on your face. Don't forget what won you the lane early, and don't stray away from it. You are constantly positioning and constantly moving in and out. Drop a skill, autoattack and take a step in the direction you need to be in. If it's safe, take the step forward. If you see that someone has an eye on you, step back.

*Staying alive is your priority over dpsing. As long as you're alive, you will be dealing damage.

*Don't use The Culling while your E is on cooldown! This is your re-positioning tool while The Culling is active.

Q/W>attack>step ---> W/Q>attack step ---> E>attack>step

Early Game

Play smart and use common sense. It's the same with every champion. I'm not in your game with you, and I don't know any of the many variables, so there really isn't anything for me to tell you here.

Mid Game

Group with your team and start taking advantage of Lucian's strong mid-game team fighting. The culling should be doing quality damage now, and with CDR it's on a very short CD. Make sure to know what you're up against! Don't balls-in if there is a Malphite holding onto his ultimate. With your dash on a short cd, you can duel and poke a bit before engaging. Try and bait an enemy into something stupid while harassing, then dash out, let your meat shields go in, and then you can all-in.

Late Game

Tell the idiots on your team to quit farming the jungle and group for pushing and/or Baron. Stay with your team late game, because you want to force fights, where you can force the enemy team to eat your ultimate or make them suicide trying to back-row you. Use your mobility and continue to duel in team fights, and don't stand stationary trying to get off as many attacks as you can before you die. You shouldn't be dying with this much CDR and mobility.

Masteries

Masteries are pretty standard. We whore up the Offensive Tree, grab some health from the Defensive Tree, and get some much needed early game mana regeneration from the Utility Tree.

Runes

As you can see, we are using a pretty standard ADC page, because it outshines what's available. I love the Move Speed Quints on Lucian, but they can be swapped out for Life Steal Bonus %.

Skills

Passive: Lightslinger

Explanation:

Lucian's passive is a powerful harass tool early, and it adds some quality damage mid-late game, once you get your CDR up enough to take full advantage of it. Make sure to drop an autoattack in between your skills! Don't faceroll before you start your attacks. Lucian is a true duelist, and what he does is art. It's beautiful.

Q: Piercing Light

Explanation:

The beam will hit all targets before and after the initial target in a straight line. This skill is good for poking down enemy champions at long range and fueling his passive.

We max this first because the damage is high, and it hits enemy champions behind creeps.

W: Ardent Blaze

Explanation:

Decent for wave clearing, but this skill is better used for the 40% movement speed given when you mark and hit a target with Ardent Blaze. Best used if you can land Ardent Blaze and combo it into your ultimate.

E: Relentless Pursuit

Explanation:

It's a dash. It removes slowing effects and the CD resets when you kill champions with The Culling. Relentless Pursuit can be used to dash short gaps and ledges. This skill is actually very powerful on Lucian. With the mid-game CDR you get with this build, you will be dashing all over the place, which means more mobility and again--->more passive procs. The thing to remember when dashing over/through terrain is that it has an extremely short range. Only mounted boars can move mountains, and you're not Sejuani, so get used to the terrain spots that are accessible.

This skill is maxed second. The CDR reduction per level is too good. I have seen people saying to max this last because it's CD is reset when you kill someone with The Culling. That's just silly. Relentless Pursuit isn't a 1 trick pony. We are using this skill constantly to land combos and setup our ultimate. Lower CD means more kills and more escapes, so always max this before Ardent Blaze.

R: The Culling

Explanation:

This ultimate is already one of my favorites. Lucian fires projectiles in a straight line continuously for 3 seconds. Once you cast your ultimate, the projectiles will always be shot in the initial direction, so if someone flashes behind you, you can't turn around while your ultimate is channeling. What's unique with this ultimate is that while channeling it you can move, Flash, and use Relentless Pursuit. This allows you to re-position while the ultimate is active and stick to your targets.

The Culling does physical damage that scales damage from AD and AP. Also, the AMOUNT of projectiles fired within the 3 second window scales with ATTACK SPEED! That being said, you are most likely only going to get every single projectile to land in 1 of 2 situations, 1.you get amazing map positioning 2.your opponent is bad. This is why you need The Culling to hit hard, another reason to Bloodthirster over BotRK.

Item Builds

Now to the items! This is where Lucian players get to have some fun, and play with an unorthodox item build that is extremely powerful with Lucian's kit.

As you can see, we start out rushing our Bloodthirster. I prefer the Bloodthirster over BotRK because with this build it is our main source of raw damage. The nerfs to BotRK weren't a complete deal breaker, but with this build Bloodthirster is just better.

This item gives you a ton of early-mid game damage and mobility. More importantly, it's cheap and so are all of it's components. is a great substitution to Shiv, but it's cost is too much of a burden on your early-game. Shiv has a huge early-game advantage, because the magic damage procs will take advantage of enemy champions before their MR per level runes have maxed. Cost vs efficiency is why I choose Shiv as my second item.

Next I usually go with Black Cleaver. This item gives us damage, health, CDR, and the passive armor reduction procs on each hit with his ultimate and 2x with his passive. It's really good on Lucian.

Lucian's ultimate scales off of AD/AP and also ATTACK SPEED! So we need an item with damage, attack speed, cdr, and movement speed to take full advantage of Lucian's potential. 1 item gives us all of this.

If the game still isn't over we can sell our boots for a Tri Force
Tri Force sounds weird, but it boosts our ultimate in EVERY way with attack speed, AD, and AP. The health, passive, and new speed proc are also very nice, so don't underestimate this item on Lucian.

We can pickup up the CDR we are losing(when selling our boots) while going defensive by picking up one of these 2 items:

For AD heavy teams, this item is great. It gives us a ton of armor, and enemy attack speed reduction, which ups our dueling potential vs enemy AD champions. The CDR is amazing, and more mana is always nice for prolonged battles that include pushing and/or Baron

AP heavy team bursting your nuts off? This item is perfect. With it's recent buffs, Visage is just op. Health, magic res, increased healing, and our precious CDR.

Very good item on every AD, but I would only get this as an addition to Black Cleaver, and not a substitution for it. If the enemy team is stacked with armor, or you are being zoned in team fights by an armor heavy enemy I would recommend this item.

I know, I know, this is a good item on a lot of champions. It's good on Lucian too, but not as good as the other choices. is going to give you 75 more AD, and with max CDR, you are going to be spamming your spells, which all scale better with . If the enemy team gets multiple Warmog's, then fine, get it. shines most vs tons of health.

It's just not that good anymore. Honestly, 9/10 times that someone dies with this item, there are 3-5 enemies that will make a circle around the person's body and wait to 1 shot them when they res. Reviving to be 1 shot isn't worth the item slot, especially when and got so much better and will give you sustain to stay in fights longer.

Different games call for different builds, so feel free to get these items in the order that you want. Wanna Triforce instead of Zephyr? Do it.

Final Comments

IMPORTANT: Don't buy the 80's villain Lucian skin with the white hair. It looks stupid.

I hope that you have fun with this guide, and if you see places for improvement please let me know. Thank you for checking out my guide.

I agree, I was just like you trying to build him just like any other adc. But then I came across your guide and gave it a shot. I felt the same way... I had to try it due to the other builds making him feel, so, blah? At first when I was playing Lucian I was maxing his dash just because of the mobility and I thought to myself this can't be right. I was also trying to make him a little tanky, but with enough common sense you don't even need to take any damage, you just dash everywhere and poke like crazy. And if this is your first guide, then keep it up, we need more LoL players like you! Lucian justice ftw.

Thank you for your support. I looked at a couple of guides when I had first played Lucian, and I kept thinking "this champion feels weak". Then I tried some different builds, and found this one to be the best. I took the build into ranked and was able to do pretty well with it. I decided to make my first guide, because the ones that are up just don't do Lucian justice.

Great build, just got done doing a ranked with this build against a Graves and Nami with a Sona support and wrecked them. Never realized how good the MS quints synergize with his skills to make him so mobile. Plus the CDR is a must as well. With this build you are pretty much a ez with a Ult that can be used offensively and defensively. Well done +1
