Zed is one of the best AD anti-carry in the game. His ability to take down a target in teamfight, thanks to his ultimate, makes him a pain to deal with for the enemy team. He's also the best farmer in the game, no mana reliant, he can afk farm very easily then crush the entire enemy team later in the game.
Very strong in soloQ and 5x5 premade thanks to his splitpushing ability.
This guide will deal with Zed top and mid on Summoner's Rift.

When should I pick Zed ?
Strong pick in SoloQ and 5x5 premade, his conditions pick are the same as Akali :
  • There are many threats damage in your team (3 at least).
  • Your team got CC and a good engage.
  • The enemy team isn't tanky.
  • You can hard counter pick a champ (=snowball).

The last rule isn't very important compared to the others.

When is Zed a bad pick ?
Special one for Zed :
  • Against Double or Triple AP Team Comp (more Zhonya).
  • You have to engage every teamfight.
  • Your team doesn't have any CC.
  • They got
  • The enemy team got many shields.

Runes

Red AD
Since Zed got quite nice AD ratios with most of his spells, extra AD will give you a better control over your lane. Early game AD runes give you a lot more of harass potential and will allow you to win most of the trades. Get these runes aswell if you want to dominate your lane (very good mid lane) before your first back or if you aim best farm in the game @15min.

Yellow Armor
Since you are an AD caster with a melee AA, you will face physical harass damage that's why armor is the best rune type to get. Moreover creeps deal physical and hurt a lot so armor will help you tank damage during trades mid and top.

Blue Magic Resist Flat
Must have if you are playing Zed mid and facing an AP champ, it will reduce his burst and help you surviving and win trades. Same for Zed top against an AP champ. Always take these runes (even on Zed top against AD, because the enemy laner gonna destroy you mid game) except against full AD comp of course.

Quintessence Lifesteal
To sustain back on creeps early game.

1 points in Butcher : To last hit like a boss.
4 points in Sorcery, Zed is an AD caster, most of your damages come from your spells so getting CDR will help you a lot.
3 points in Brute Force to have a potential to get more AD later in the game.
1 point in Spell Weaving : To deal more damage during your ult.
1 point in Martial Mastery, good to get extra AD and might help you to get a kill early game. (like 1 AD Quint).
1 point in Blade Weaving : To deal more damage during your ult.
3 points in Executioner which synergies well with your passive.

Summoner Sets

Ignite & Flash
Flash : Flash on Zed is mandatory. You can make so many plays with your W shadow + R shadow + flash, you can get in range of your shadow if you went too far away from it. You can flash on your target to use your ultimate without using your W. It is an espace and chasing tool. You can also position yourself far better in teamfight.

Ignite : Most of Zed'damages come from his ultimate, when you used all your spells and your target doesn't die from the mark proc, ignite can finish it off. Also early game the synergy between ignite + let you kill your lane opponent very easily when they are low hp. Can't be countered by armor or mr since it's true damage.
It helps against high lifesteal/spellvamp champ to reduce healing and kill them.

Other summoners :

Teleport : If you think you need to split push and lot and teamfight at the same time, or if you aren't that good at managing split push and teamfight then this spell is for you.

Early Game

OR FIRST


So the best early game path nowadays is to start Doran's Shield > Cutlass > BoTRK. Get Cutlass first.



Boots can be delayed but I suggest you to get Boots fast against skillshot champs either jungler or mid lane. It also help you ganking a lot.

Every boots are good on Zed except of course.

Full slow team.
Your boots most of the time = roam and split push.
Destroying tower + damage during your ult.
CDR for your spells (Zed is very energy hungry be careful before buying these boots).
Against CC and full AP team.
Against Hard Lane AD and full AD team.

Mid Game



BoTRK gives you sustain and a great active in 1v1 situation. Why BotrK over BT as first item ? : BT rush isn't unviable but it's like rushing Deathcap on Ahri when DFG is OP on her - Zed and Ahri work the same way, DFG and BotRK are just too stronk and synergies too well with their spells. BoTRK = DFG with your ult.

Buy Youmyy after BoTRK, all stats are useful on Zed :

Mobility
Attack speed to deal more damages during your ult.
Crit chance.
CDR.
Flat ArmPen.
Cheap mid game transition : 1363 gold after brutalizer.

The active gives AS and MS : You can proc more AA during your ult which results in more damage.
Don't forget that the Youmuu active can help you to get close to a target very easily without even using your W.
With the nerf Youmyy is mandatory because you need the extra MS to chase your opponent.

I'd rather like getting Last Whisper over BT mid game. Indeed, getting the best Arm Pen item in the game will make the armor worthless and you will be sure to deal a lot of damage against tanky target even if they stack more and more armor. Last Whisper is a must have on an AD caster in order to deal damage to the offtanks who will focus you. You have to deal damage even against high armored target or they will zone you hard in teamfights.

At this point you need a defensive item for team fighting refer to the previous chapter for more informations.

Late Game

+ Defensive Item.

Black Cleaver as last item is better nowadays than BT with Youmuu + Last Whisper, huge amount or ArmPen.

Don't forget to get an Enchantment for boots (no need to rush it on Zed)

OR

Homeguard if you are getting backdoored or your base is really exposed otherwise get Distortion.

Very late game sell your boots for Zephyr.

Why not every time ? Because you remain very squishy and can be burst down very easily if the enemy AP got some Mpen. This item is really expensive so it's a very situational item.

BEST LAST HIT PASSIVE IN THE GAME - You can farm like a boss the whole day and the sound coming from the passive is so fucking good. Aside from farming, this ability allows you to go very aggressive against weak early game champ. You can harass them and abuse your passive when they are under 50% HP. Moreover, it's magic damage and not physical which means it won't be reduce if the enemy laner is stacking armor, the additional magic damage from the passive are added during So pre-6 when an enemy is low HP you can flash on him, use your spells + passive + ignite = 100% kill. Don't forget there is little delay between each passive proc on an enemy.
Razor Shuriken


Your main damage ability and your main safe farming tool, the range is decent which means you can farm creeps from far when getting deny. Remember that one shuriken will deal less and less damage when hitting many targets which means shuriken-> creeps -> champ will do less damage than shuriken -> champ. Try to aim properly since you max this spell you have to hit your target. The double shuriken harass is your main damage output pre-6, try to poke your opponent with it so you can kill him when hitting 6. Cost a lot of energy at level 1, you should be able to manage your energy properly level 5 (Q lvl 3).
Living Shadow


Why is Zed a skilled champ to play ? Because of this ability. Basically you summon a shadow which mimics every spell you do.
  • Using Q = Double
  • Using E = Additional slow + reduce W CD when hitting champ.

The passive of this ability allows then to focus on ArmPen Items first then major AD items (% AD scaling). The shadow grants vision of an area around it so use it before facechecking or helping your Caitlyn getting vision on enemy with
On lane this ability can put a good pressure and deny your enemy : put your shadow on your creeps and spam Q + E on the enemy when he''s going for the last hit = free harass. On the other hand, when getting very hard denied you can put extend your Q range with your shadow to farm.
The active of your W is an instant blink which means that you can dodge every skillshot if well timed such The blink range is pretty high so you can use this ability as an escape (Ganks) or gap closer (rush the enemy carries). The CD of your W is reduced by your when hitting enemy champions, in teamfights you will be able to use it a lot. With your W + R Shadow you can tp on two different locations, use your brain to juke your opponents or to kill them properly.

Shadow Slash


  • Only your shadow's E will slow your opponent. Your basic E will only reduce W CD.
Your second main damage skill, it slows your target and deal damage plus reduce your W cooldown when hitting enemy champions. This spam ability (very short cooldown) explains why every Zed player got 99999 creeps at 20min especially mid lane. When using your W (not maxed E) you have to spam your E to use it twice during the 4 seconds of your shadow. Actually when pushing a wave early game 1 Q + 2 E is enough to clean it. If this ability is maxed, then you have to put a good amount of pressure on the lane by autoattacking + spaming your E on your opponent - remember that if you use your E + Shadow's E it won't deal additional damage.

When running away from a gank, spam this ability to slow your opponents and refreshing your W's CD.
Death Mark


So you want to kill someone ? As Karthus you press R, well as Zed it's pretty much the same : press R + smash your keyboard. It will works but there are many ways to optimize this skill.
  • You are untargetable during your ult so you can avoid damages and any kind of damages especially from your target.
  • Every magic or physical damages from your spells will deal additional damage on the mark proc but doesn't deal additional damage on the mark proc. This spell explains why is a must have on Zed - it works like a DFG for AD.
  • So Zed's ultimate became an escape tool now since his shadow is where you ulted your target, when getting knockback you will have to use your or your now, if you see that you can't kill your target you can tp back to your shadow to escape. This shadow is very important and you HAVE to use it when necessary.
  • This spell doesn't deal huge damage early game.
  • Try to use your ultimate without using your W as gap closer, use your W to chase after using your ult.
  • I don't like using 2 shadows to deal more damage, imo your W is better as chasing ability.
  • Hard counter by Zhonya.
  • If you target has a Shuriken over his head (you ulted it) it means the mark will kill it.

Very squishy champ and totally mana dependant, keep looking at her mana pool while you are laning against. The only way to beat her is pre-6, try to bait a Q then blink it with and throw everything on her, she will probably be half-hp. Try to repeat this as many times as you can. If you can keep her low at level 6 then you can try to kill her. Remember than she got an annoying passive. If you can't kill her pre-6 and she based + blue then you care fucked and need to roam or push the lane + wraiths. You can't fight Anivia post-6 with blue since you are a melee champ. Her R + E combo will hit you too hard and you can get stunned by her Q and she can push really fast. When she got Zhonya you won't be able to kill her.

The main problem for you in this matchup will be to manage your energy. Don't get taunted in the creep wave or you will take a lot of damage, try to harass (with spells and AA) as much as you can when his is on cooldown, also push the lane. If Shen uses his ultimate then you have to take his turret as fast as possible, you can't interrupt his ultimate. You won't kill him when he got Sunfire before you get your Last Whisper.

His W counters AD caster as well. Try to push the lane and ask for a gank.

Still, remember that his pool costs him HP so if you are 80% HP+ and he's 50% HP you can try to make a play pre-9. His sustain post-9 is too high, trying to 1v1 him at this point pretty much suicide if you are not ahead.

Zed is the first ninja in 200 years to unlock the ancient, forbidden ways. He defied his clan and master, casting off the balance and discipline that had shackled him all his life. Zed now offers power to those who embrace knowledge of the shadows, and slays those who cling to ignorance.

An orphan, Zed was taken in and trained by a great ninja master. Only one other student appeared to be Zed's equal - the master's son, Shen. It seemed Zed could never win the favor of the master, as every match between the rivals ended in a draw. Frustrated and jealous, he sought an advantage. The young ninja ventured into a sealed part of the clan's temple, where he found an ornate, foreboding box. Sensing the dark knowledge within, Zed knew he should not open it, but he peered inside nonetheless. In an instant, shadows touched his mind, revealing techniques that had long been hidden. Now armed with a secret edge, he challenged Shen, and this time he defeated the master's son. He expected praise and recognition in his moment of victory, but somehow the master knew Zed had used forbidden ways, and banished him.

Humiliated, the young ninja wandered for years. His bitterness turned to ambition, and he began to train others in the style of the shadows. As his power grew, so did his circle of followers, but he knew that without the box, his technique would never be perfect. One day, Zed looked at his followers and saw that his students were now an army. He led them back to the temple to claim his prize. At the gates, he was surprised to find the old master waiting, receiving Zed and his disciples as if they were welcome guests. The old man laid his sword at Zed's feet, declaring that he had failed Zed as his master. By banishing his former student, the master had doomed Zed to the shadows, instead of leading him to the balanced path. The old man implored Zed to enter the temple, destroy the box, and lead his followers to balance. The dark ninja followed the master inside. Moments later, the assembled ninjas heard Zed cry out in pain. Mysteriously, he emerged unscathed, and threw the severed head of the master at Shen's feet. Screaming in rage, Zed commanded his followers to slaughter the master's students and seize the box.

That day, the old ninja order fell. Though many students died, some escaped thanks to Shen's heroic efforts. Now the temple is a dark training ground for the Order of the Shadow. Zed rules as the Order's master, and his edict is simple: perfect one's technique, and kill all ninjas who refuse to embrace the shadows.

  • Use your ult when they are using their escape () or right after.
  • You will have to use your flash probably, ult her : if she knockbacks you use your W Shadow to tp near her if she uses her W you are fucked.
  • Use your ult, when getting knockback use your W shadow immediatly to tp near her and kill her (don't stand near a wall).

General Tips And Tricks

  • + = 2 shadows to manage - Never forget this.
  • Don't spam like a retard as Zed you are energy dependent.
  • Use your E on the behind you when getting chased to slow down your opponents and reduce W's CD.
  • Use instead of facechecking.
  • Your ultimate can be used defensively to escape and switching place with your opponent then away.
  • Getting blue as Zed can be a good idea if your jungler isn't mana reliant.

Zhonya And You

  • This item is **** for you, there is no way to counter it, you can't burst someone who got this item. Except if you are REALLY ahead then you are able to kill someone without your ult. You can't deal with someone with Zhonya if ahead or as fed as you. Try to aim the other carries in that case, mostly AD carries which even with can be killed easily (QSS doesn't prevent additional damage from the ult - only the proc mark). If the big big threat is the enemy AP with Zhonya then wait a good engage and try to make him use Zhonya before you use your ult. Last thing to remember : your R shadow last longer than the Zhonya duration so you can tp right near your target if needed.

Early Game

Laning Phase

Introduction

Your main goal during the laning phase is to farm as Zed except in very favorable matchup. Farm upon reaching a lot of items and shred the whole enemy team in team fight or 1v1 splitpushing. Kill a good player as Zed pre-6 is hard.

First Stage

Push your lane, that's my level 1 tip as Zed if you got the matchup advantage (and even with the other champs with escape). If you can hit level 2 before your opponent then you can pressure and start harassing without problem. The level 1 push is simple : the wave then AA every creep. If you wanna try to harass do so before 3min. If you got a hard matchup, you can try to freeze the lane (take care of your passive which will push the lane if you last hit too much too early) and farm under tower the early levels before pushing later when you are able to do wraiths and wolves.

THE 3MIN MARK J4 GANK OR LEE SIN GANK AKA DOUBLE BUFF RAPE TIME 3min means no trade if no vision on the enemy jungler except if your enemy laner is below 30% HP which won't happen if he knows how to play the game.

If you are the chosen one by or or even then just W away, if you listened to my call there is no problem.

How To Deny ?

Denying someone in LoL is harder than in DOTA, yes harder. In DOTA you can deny the enemy creep by watching your own minions and deny. You can't do that anymore in LoL. There's only two ways to deny an opponent :
  • Freezing the lane, that's what you do once you got the lane advantage and ward coverage, you only hit the minions once there are very low hp and if you see the enemy laner going for a last hit (according he got less HP than you otherwise you wouldn't have frozen the lane) use everything on him except Summoner Spells of course. You will see many people on streams press S to stop champ animations and only last hit. Another scenario, you are coming back to your lane and the enemy minions didn't reach your tower but are going to, also there is no minions from your side, tank the creeps damage by being in front of them until your own creep wave comes (only do that when you are ahead otherwise you will have a hard time since you lose HP ).
  • Pushing the lane like a boss, since Zed is probably one of the best splitpusher in the game getting the tower ASAP is a good option to consider.

Second Stage

So let's say you got your full skillset, what's the basic combo on Zed ?
Use your - - - Blink - AA.

Why using E first instead of Q ? Because you will slow your target and it will be easier for you to aim your Qs. Use to harass when you got vision on the enemy jungler. If your enemy laner is stronger than you early game, farm with your Q and play safe, if you lose 1-3 creeps each wave it isn't a big issue since later you will farm like a boss.

So let's say you hit 6, when you are level 6 you can do the previous combo and try getting your opponent low enough to secure a kill with your ult (35% HP is a secured kill). 2 big rules : wait your Q cooldown before using your ultimate - wait to have at least 160/200 energy before doing anything. At this point you can + + + + away or gap close + AA if needed.

If you see the enemy laner ganking somewhere and you are too late to follow up, push your lane as hard as you can and get the tower. You can also try to gank an overextended lane. Just don't let the enemy mid/top roam freely.

Remember before attacking to have a good map coverage, you can check the bushes with your W or if you doubt of an incoming gank (weird enemy behavior).
Move to help/deny dragon if you pushed the lane hard or if the enemy laner is freezing it (top).

Mid Game

Third Stage

For me, mid game happens when your first big item is finished. For you it is :

Your first goal is to take objectives. OBJECTIVES damn it, one of the reasons why 90 % of the community is bad is because 90 % don't have any game overview and mechanisms. League Of Legends isn't a team deathmatch : your goal is to destroy the enemy Nexus which means you must destroy the inib and the towers. To help you in this task, the game got buffs which can help you take advantage for your team like Nashor, Dragon and Red/Blue buffs. This is the priority of the game. You mindset you must have. I see many team which don't know what to do when they got an advantage. Often it results by someone getting caught which has for consequences what we can call a "throw". So as Zed and as main damage dealer of your team, you must take care of the drake at this point of the game. Your team and the other don't want to do it then just take the bottom lane tower or the mid one. Group up with your team if needed and don't forget to farm as much as you can. If you can't push a lane because of the fucking or then do a SMART split push. Don't forget to farm to get your items.

As Zed mid if you see that's the All Mid Party is happening (bottom lane roaming) then go bot and push, let your bot lane hold mid except if they are far behind. Splipushing bot early game isn't a bad thing since the main mid game objective is Dragon and Tower.

Try to fight with a finished item. Tell your team to delay a fight if they can until you get your item.
When you finish your LW, you have to think about which defensive item you have to take.
or are the most versatile items, giving you health and MR (in Banshee case). Refer to Item Builds Chapter for more details on which defensive item take.
You got enough armor pen for the entire game at this point.

NB : Check who got Zhonya and who doesn't so you can focus on the good target.

Late Game

Last Stage

Ok you are almost full stuff. You are aiming for your last item / You can consider getting boots enchantments after this item.
Farm when you got full vision on the enemy team, don't get caught.
After, stay with your team and focus on your main job : hiting tower when pushing.
If your team is getting destroyed in teamfights then splitpush (ward !) and hope that your team can hold 4v5 or doesn't get engage.
Nashor must be warded EVERYTIME, you can scout it thanks to your W. If they go drake GO NASHOR. Nashor is more important than drake late game. Stick with your team, push the towers. Be with your team if they go nash or drake anyway you have to stay with your team everytime late game.

Globally we can divide Late Game into 2 parts :
  • Splitpushing (Attack)
  • Protect the tower (defensive stance)

Splitpushing as Zed

Push the wave by using your basic pushing combo + + then go back if you see the enemy team coming for you. If they don't, keep pushing your lane until they come especially if nobody on the enemy team got Zhonya.

Protection of the tower as Zed

What does tower protection mean ? You have to clear the waves as fast as possible. Put your W + Q + E, gg you pushed the lane. Take care stay behind your frontline to not get instagib.

Tips

Let's say you are out of position and the enemy team is rushing Nashor. You can try to steal it as Zed with your mimics +
Everything is about teamfighting and splitpushing late game, refer to the next chapter for more informations on teamfights

Dont forget :

Team Fights

FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. You are a single target burst assassin, you can't afford to switch targets all the time during a fight. Obviously if your target flashes away and is low hp, don't chase him if your team is in trouble or if this kill is not high reward.
Don't target Zhonya champs, use your ultimate wisely and select the right target = main damage dealer or the big threat.

NEVER engage the fight except if you are OVERFED You are a gap closer assassin, just strike your target in the back.

Your main target is the enemy AD carry, or the AP caster whichever is the more fed, use EVERYTHING on him, including and active item. Ignore the offtank except if you take down the two previous target and your AD carry is in trouble. Focus on squishy not on tanky champ.
Spam your in teamfights so you can get a reset on and switch target really easily.

Sometimes if you see your enemy carry in trouble because of only one champ like then you can bust him down with so your ADC can deal damage. Only do that if the two enemy carries aren't a big threat or if the other team members can deal with them.

If you see your team dying before you come in the fight and the enemy team is full life just run away.
Dont die for nothing, if your team got caught or did a bad engage don't be aced for nothing.

Final Comments

Hope you enjoyed this guide through these lines and getting better at mastering Zed.

Don't blame me if you lose your first games as Zed, most of the time it will only be because you are learning a champ, it's a champ hard to master which need a lot of training.

You might want to note that you can avoid Karthus' ult with your own ult b/c your ult makes you untargetable.
