Introduction

Hi my name is Arkara73. In this guide I will be talking about Utility Jax. I am sure some of you have
never even heard of Utility Jax before but don't worry I will teach you how to abuse Utility Jax and
destroy your enemies. If you can learn how to play him correctly it will be GG within the first 5
minutes of the game. Likes and comments would be very appreciated.

Why Play Utility Jax?

Many of you are probably wondering why you should ever play Utility Jax. Well, there are several reasons why you should play him. First off Utility Jax is really fun and if you like to try new builds that nobody really uses then you will enjoy this one. Secondly, Utility Jax is much better at sticking to his target making it easier to get kills and get fed.

What is Utility Jax?

Utility Jax is a Jax build where instead of going 9/21/0 or 21/9/0 you go 9/0/21. The core part of Utility Jax is the increased Movement Speed he gets from all of his items, masteries, and runes. Since Jax is a melee character and needs to be in melee range going the Utility route allows him to do this

Pros/Cons

  • Very hard to escape without burning flash or ghost
  • Arguably the best duelist in the game
  • Has an AOE stun that mitigates all auto attacks for a few seconds
  • Does both magic and physical damage which makes counter building hard
  • OP Movement Speed
  • Godlike Late Game
  • Sleeper OP
  • Super Fun

  • Squishier than Standard Jax
  • CC hurts him a lot
  • Relies on auto attacks
  • Better Early Game than Standard Jax but still pretty bad
  • Easy to kite but harder than Standard Jax
  • Hard to master

Masteries

I use these Masteries for Utility Jax:

There are several Advantages to these masteries:
1)The Cooldown of Activated Items are reduced by 15% so Botrk will be up more often
2)Lifesteal and Spellvamp
3)Gain experience faster which allows you to hit that level 6 power spike early on and destroy your opponent
4)6% CDR is pretty nice
5)+3% Movement Speed is very nice for Jax and allows him to stick to his target

Runes

I use these runes for Utility Jax:

There are several advantages to these Runes:
1) You get a good amount of Armor Pen
2) You get a good amount of Magic Pen
3) You get some CDR and at level 18 you will have 10.44% CDR
4) You get even more Movement Speed which makes it even easier to stick to your target

Summoner Spells

Flash is essential for most champions and helps Jax escape enemies and catch up to them if his q is on cd

Great for finishing off enemies. Great for preventing enemies from healing in a fight for example

Gives you EVEN MORE Movement Speed. Very good choice. Can replace Flash but not ignite

Other Viable Summoner Spells:
Can be used instead of ignite. Good for auto attack based champions for example and and can prevent enemies from escaping.

Can be used instead of ignite because Jax has no natural sustain but since you have lifesteal as part of your build it isn't need that much.

Good for getting back to lane if you know you will have to recall a lot.

This is a meh spell for me. I would rather have other summoner spells than this one.

Never Get:
If you play Jax correctly you shouldn't need this.

No...

Jax generally doesn't have mana issues so not needed.

Can't be used on Rift.

I don't know why you would even consider getting this.

You are not jungling.

Skills

Passive: Relentless Assault

Explanation:
This is a great passive. As the fight goes on you will proc your ult's passive more and do more overall damage. Goes really well with items like Trinity and Frozen Mallet because you will be able to activate the passives more often which helps you stick to your target.

Q: Leap Strike

Explanation:
This ability helps you stick to your targets very well. "Yes I used an ability to get away from Jax woohoo." Sound of Jax leap Striking. "Well Fuck." Also does a good amount of damage with a relatively short cooldown

W: Empower

Explanation:
Resets your auto attack timer and does a good amount of damage. Very spammable.

E: Counter Strike

Explanation:
Let's you dodge basic attacks and then stun people. When I am playing or or someone who relies on auto attacks and I see a Jax on the other team I shit my pants. You can do nothing to him during those 2 seconds while he just beats the shit out of you. I try to stay away from Jax when I play these champs.

You can use this ability with and stun your target right after you to them allowing you to stick to them and start doing damage. Does a good amount of damage.

R: Grandmaster's Might

Explanation:
This is an OP ult right here. Makes you really tanky and its passive is just amazing. Every third basic attack you become super OP for a second and do a shit ton of damage. Then you wait for 2 auto attacks and then you become super OP for another second. Amazing Ultimate.

Skill Order

The order in which you max your skills is:
and whenever possible

Why Max E before Q?

Simple. If you have your up more often you will be able to mitigate damage more and stun enemies more. Maxing your first allows you to leap to enemies more often but if you play Utility Jax right you should already be sticking to your target anyway. Also don't forget you have the experience mastery so it won't take too long to finish maxing

WTF?!?!? WHY AREN'T THERE BOOTS IN THIS BUILD?!?!?!?

Time to do some math:

Jax has 350 Movement Speed to begin with. He gets an extra 4.5% from runes and an extra 3% from masteries.

7.5% of 350=26.25

350+26.25=376.25 Movement Speed right at the beginning of the game

So this is slow compared to boots but since is part of your build you get an additional 8% Movement Speed. So that is a total of 15.5% bonus Movement Speed

15.5% of 350=54.25

350+54.25=404.25 Movement Speed.

With 2nd tier boots you get +45 Movement Speed so that would be 395 Movement Speed with boots. This is OP because it allows you to get an extra item instead of having to buy boots.

Now Imagine of you got which gives you an extra 10% Movement Speed. So now that is a total of 25.5% bonus Movement Speed.

25.5% of 350=89.25
350+89.25=439.25 Movement Speed

Holy Shit. You don't even have boots and you are that fast. I'm not even done yet. Assuming you have and :

The passive gives you a 20 Movement Speed increase when you hit a unit so if you are chasing someone you now have 459.25 Movement Speed

Don't forget you also have the active which steals 30% of your targets Movement Speed. Let's say the champion you are chasing is :

If Ashe has 2nd tier boots she has 370 Movement Speed. So when you use the active you steal 30% of her Movement Speed:
30% of 370=111

11+459.25=570.25 Movement Speed while Ashe only has 259. I honestly have no idea how anyone could ever escape Jax with this build. So much Movement Speed. It is so broken.

Item Builds

In the last chapter I went over how OP Utility Jax is with the Movement Speed so we aren't going to discuss that in this chapter.

Very good Item. I do not care what the hell you are building you must get this item. As said before the active makes your Movement Speed OP

Offers great Stats and is a very good Item. Mandatory on this build.

Highly Suggested but not totally necessary. Very good stats and overall a great item

AD and AP and has a very good active. Another OP Item on Jax

Good for taking out people who are stacking a lot of armor

Health and Armor is great on Jax

Nothing wrong with an extra 1,000 health

AD, Magic Resist, and a Magic Damage Shield. Very good

A lot of health and a lot of Magic Resist. Amazing item and it is usually my go to when I am up against AP laners

Health, Mana, MR, and the ability to make an ability completely useless. Boo Yah.

Good if you are getting focused

AD and AP is really good on Jax

Lane Opponents

Lane Opponents
Here I will cover some of the basic lane opponents that you might go against and their difficulty.

Medium

Your life will be hard before you hit 6 so just play passively and farm until you get to 6. When you fight him make sure to use ignite to drastically decrease his healing from his w. His passive is really annoying so you may have to retreat if his passive is up after you have triggered it. If he initiates with his q he has no way to dodge your [skills/jax/e.png] so its pretty much gg for him.

Hard

Darius makes it really hard to cs with his spinning axe of death. You have to play really passive and ask your jungler for a gank to get ahead. Whatever you do try not to let him get passive stacks on you because when he presses r with full stacks you are doomed.

Medium/Hard

Don't really see him top lane very much. You want to buy some armor pen because he will most likely build some armor against you. Watch out for his crazy health regen. He can get really hard to kill when he gets tanky. Ask your jungler for ganks.

Medium

She just got nerfed so she's not as big of a threat as she used to be. Wait for her to use rappel before you use [skills/jax/e.png]. Stay behind minions to dodge her poke.

Pathetically Easy

She will be annoying until you hit 6. Then just use your combo and if she commits wait until she uses her ult to activate [skills/jax/e.png] because it completely mitigates all of the damage from her ult. You probably won't even need ganks from your jungler.

Hard/Impossible

Naturally Tanky. His silence and spin to win combo can do a lot of damage if he gets ahead and once he starts to get tanky he will be almost impossible to kill. Ask for a lot of ganks.

Medium

Use your combo. Whoever activates [skills/jax/e.png] first in a 1v1 loses. Activate it right after he activates his and you will win.

Hard

Can poke from a great distance. His knock back completely makes your [skills/jax/e.png] useless. Ask for a lot of ganks and try not to go all in with him unless you are sure you can win.

Easy/Medium

Avoid his poke and stuns. He is very squishy so your combo can do a lot of damage to him.

Hard

Really tanky. All of his debuffs really destroy auto attack based champions like you. Use your combo a lot and ask for ganks.

Easy

Even after his rework he is still easy to beat. He is an auto attack based champion so your [skills/jax/e.png] mitigates all of his damage. Sometimes it is wise to wait for him to use his meditate before using your [skills/jax/e.png] Late Game he will be a pain in the ass but you scale into late game way better than he does so you will destroy him.

Hard

His high sustain is annoying. His wither just destroys you. If he uses wither do not attack him until after it has worn off. Be careful about his ult. After he uses his Q he really doesn't have anything else until it gets off cd so remember that when fighting him. He can get tanky fast so also be cautious about that. NEVER LET NASUS FARM! Try to deny him farm as much as you can and his q will be useless.

Hard

This guy is a bitch to deal with. You are a Late Game Champ. He is an Early Game Champ. His poke is annoying as hell and his full combo can be devastating. Make sure to build a lot of armor against him. Late Game he stands no chance against you so just wait until then

Hard/Impossible

She has one of the strongest early games out of all the top laners and since your early game is weak she can dish out a lot of damage. Play passively and ask for a lot of ganks because she can be really hard to kill. Late Game she stands no chance against you so go out there and kick her ass late game.

Hard/Impossible

His poison trail makes it very difficult for you to do damage to him without getting poisoned. Ask for some ganks. He can get really tanky really quickly so try to take him down early.

Medium

He has range over you and his blinding dart does a lot of damage while also preventing you from damaging him with your auto attacks. He is very squishy so your combo can do a lot of damage to him. Also, don't go in the bushes. That's where he puts all of his shrooms so running around in there like an idiot won't help you. Oracles completely destroys him and it only costs 400 gold so you should consider buying it early on.

Medium

He is an auto attack based champion so you can easily beat him. His ult is annoying. Make sure to ignite him about halfway through his ult to get the kill on him. Shouldn't be too hard to beat him.

Medium

He is an auto attack based champion. He has an insane early game so play passively until you hit 6. Then when he uses his combo you will most likely smash his face in since he has no way of escaping after he dashes.

Hard/Impossible

This guy is the king of zoning. He will make your life living hell in lane while being fairly tanky. Try to farm as best you can and ask for ganks from your jungler a lot.

Final Comments

Well I hope this guide has taught you how to play Utility Jax and how to abuse his insane Movement Speed hacks. I really enjoy playing Utility Jax and am very good at it. Once you get the hang of it he is unstoppable. If you want check out my other guides and leave a like and comment that would be really helpful to me. I hope you have learned a lot from this guide and thank you for reading.

The increased movement speed helps Jax stick to his target better, he can hit level 6 more quickly because of the experience gain, he has natural lifesteal and spellvamp which helps him sustain in lane, and the active cdr lets him use items like Botrk more often.

It's not always the best for certain situations (for example, if you are going up against a Riven then you probably want to go with 9-21-0 so she doesn't destroy you) but it's still really good in a lot of situations.

October 13, 2013 - 06:05 AM #2

I see what your saying but can you explain to me why utility jax is better than 21-9-0 hybrid or ad jax or the 9-21 ad off tank jax?

Also, Your icons you want are incorrectly placed it should looke like this [img(small)=skills/championname/q,w,e, or r.png] Skills can be items or champions without the 2nd / going into /png.

Wish you the best of luck for your guide.

October 12, 2013 - 11:40 PM #3

Okay thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it. I will definitely go more in depth in future guides for the matchups. Also putting the 3 points in mana instead of cdr was a mistake so take that instead. Thank you for pointing that out.

October 9, 2013 - 03:37 PM #4

I tried some utility jax once myself. Lvld q first thou and took 10%cdr masteries, then a sightstone + some cdr then push lane and roam in enemy jungle safely with some 4s cd jump little later on. From your guide id like some more in depth matchup section, cool guide though. Why extra mana over summoner cdr sounds weird to mee
