Introduction
Volibear is a very strong and tanky jungler.
In early game he is not so tanky so you should rush your health items as fast as possible, because his strongest spell scales with your health. His early game is not the best, but in the mid game you should deal enough damage and tank some damage.

Why not play Volibear on Solo Top.?
Volibear is playable on solo top, too, but in my opinion you can gank him to easily, because he got no real escape except flash. Also he got very strong ganks. That is the reason why I think he is better in the jungle.

Jungle Volibear got pros and cons.

Jungling Pros
- Clears jungle camps very fast
- Whenever you come out of the jungle you are on full life
- Good Ganks

Jungling Cons
- Less farm than solo top Volibear
- Lower level than solo top Volibear



Masteries
I rush these masteries, because Defense gives you bonus health and makes you much tankier.I think the magic resist and armor makes you tanky enough in the early game.
The 9 points in Utility let you respawn and teleport to your base faster, but the reason I take this 9 points in Utility is that your buffs last longer.
I take this runes, because with the armor penetration you clear the jungle faster.
The armor and magic resist runes make you a little bit tankier.
And the health quintessences make you tankier and make your W-spell stronger.
Summoner Spells

Explanation:

I take these summoner spells, because you need the smite to steal baron, enemy buffs and dragon.
also it is better, because it makes jungling much easier.
Ghost I think is very nice on Volibear, because in combination with your E-Spell you can escape from ganks. Volibear got no good escaping spells so I think you should pick ghost, also you can harass your enemys very well with ghost in combination with your Q-Spell.



[summoners/flash.png]

Explanation:

Flash in my opinion is not viable, since the range has been nerfed. Ghost is much better for escaping then flash, also you cant harass your enemys with flash. This spell only helps you in the early game, because in the mid game you normally should be very tanky so you can escape easier with ghost. You dont need an escape in the mid/late game so the harass with ghost is much better.

[summoners/heal.png]

Explanation:

Heal is very good instead of ghost, because in combination with your passive you are nearly unkillable. Using heal before your passive is activated allows you maybe to hold your passive on cooldown. But with heal you got no harass except your Q-Spell, also you got no escape except your E-Spell, but your slow is not as good as other slows like Nasus slow. I prefer this spell on Volibear, because you can dive the enemys at their tower when you start a gank and if you loose to much health you can use heal so that survive the gank and get the kill.
Skills
[skills/volibear/p.png] Passive: Chosen of the Storm

Heals volibear for 30% of his Maximum Health over 6 seconds when he drops below 30% Health.

120 second cooldown


Explanation:

This is a very strong passive. It gives you a very strong healthregeneration and in teamfights it gives you enough health to survive if your team fails. Also it is good in 1on1 or 1on2 figths, because you win the most fights cause of this passive.




[skills/volibear/q.png] Q: Rolling Thunder

Volibear gains 45% Movement Speed while moving toward enemy champions. Lasts 4 seconds.

Volibear's next attack deals an additional 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 physical damage and flings the target behind him.

12/11/10/9/8 second Cooldown

Costs 40 Mana


Explanation:

This spell is good for ganks. You can throw your enemys behind you if you come out of the jungle. In combination with your E-Spell it is hard for the enemy to escape.




[skills/volibear/w.png] W: Frenzy

Passive: Volibear gains 8% Attack Speed with each attack. Stacks up to 3 times.

Active: When Volibear has (3) stacks of Frenzy, he can bite an enemy to deal (90/140/190/240/290) (+20% of bonus Health) physical damage, increased by (1)% for each (1)% health the target is missing.

Cooldown 18 Seconds

Cost 35 Mana


Explanation:

This is your strongest damage spell.
It has a high cooldown. You should use it to kill an enemy, because of evry % of the enemys missing health it deals more damage. It is a little bit like Garens ultimate.



[skills/volibear/e.png] E: Majestic Roar

Volibear deals (60/95/130/165/200) (+60% of ability power) magic damage to nearby enemies and slow them by 30% for 3 seconds.

Cooldown 11 Seconds

Cost 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 mana


Explanation:

It is a very good slow. In combination with your Q-Spell it is very hard for the enemy to escape.
If you attack the enemy in a big minion wave it also fears the minions so they dont attack you and you get less damage. While jungling the fear also helps you.




[skills/volibear/r.png] R: Thunder Claws

Volibear channels the storm, causing all basic attacks for (12) seconds to deal (75/115/155) (+30% of ability power) magic damage, which chains to 4 nearby enemies.

Cost 100 Mana

Cooldown 100 / 90 / 80 seconds


Explanation:

Very good damage push. Best used in teamfights, but if you are in an 1on1 or an 1on2 you wont win without ultimate you should activate it too, because your items are very expensive and you maybe need the kills.




Skill Order

I skill this at first and maximize it at first, because it gives you attackspeed and deals high damage.

Skilling this at second i think is very nice, because in the jungle it fears the minions and makes jungling much easier. Maximizing this at second is a good idea, because it increases the slow amount and the damage.

[skills/volibear/q.png]
Maximizing this at last in my opinion is the best you can do, because it only gives you the runspeed if you harass the enemys and skilling this only reduces the cooldown and increases the damage.

[skills/volibear/r.png]
Skilling the ultimate always if you can.
It increases your damage very well and in team figths you deal damage on 4 targets.
Item Builds
Core Items

Buying this items as core helps you in the early game.
It gives you lifesteal, magic resist, armor, health and increases the heal of your passive and the heal of your wriggles, so you should survive long enough to kill 1 or 2 enemys.

Standard Build

This items give you enough health, armor and magic resist. You need much health, because your W-Spell is your highest damage and it scales with you health. Buying magic resist and armor makes you much tankier so you can stay much longer in teamfights.

Heavy AD

This items give you much armor and health. If the enemys AD-Range or another AD-Champ is feedet this items give you high survivability.

This items give you much magic resist and health. Also it gives you much healthregeneration, which is very nice in combination with your passive.

Other Viable Items

You can buy Wits End instead of Spirit Visage, because both items give you magic resist, but in my opinion Spirit Visage is stronger on Volibear. Spirit Visage gives you health and increases your healthregeneration. Increasing your healthregeneration is good on jungle Volibear, because your Wriggles
gives you more lifesteal then and your passive regenerates more health, but it is your choice which item you want to buy.
Wits End is very nice, because it gives you attackspeed. Attackspeed is good on Volibear, because your W-Spell stacks up faster and it is a good push for the damage you deal with your ultimate, also it gives you much magic resist.

This item gives you much health. Also it gives you a slow, which is very nice while harassing enemys. Buying this instead of a Warmogs is a good possibility, because you can buy Phage, then your Atmas and then the full Fozen Mallet.

Why is AP-Volibear not viable
Volibears ultimate and his E-Spell scale with AP.
The problem is that they have long cooldowns and AP-Volibear has not enough health for his W-Spell, so you dont deal much damage and you wont survive as long as necessary in teamfight respectively in 1on1 fights.
Jungling
Volibear is a very strong jungler. He got good ganking abilitys and he clears the jungle camps very fast. Your E-Spell helps you in the jungle, because the fear reduces the damage the minions in the jungle do for a few seconds.

I prefer starting at blue so you can use your spells as often as you want, but since the jungle patch the blue buff is not as important as before, because the minions die faster. Volibears spells have long cooldowns so you dont waste much mana, so it is your choice which rotation you want to clear.
Early Game
In the early game Volibear is not very tanky, but with the Defense masteries and the runes you should be able to win 1on1 or 1on2 fights very easily.
Mid Game
I think in the Mid Game Volibear shines most. He deals high damage and is very tanky if you get some kills with your ganks in the early game.
Late Game
In the Late Game Volibear is almost unkillable if he dont get focussed, but who focusses a tank.? ;)
His damage output is very strong and as I already said he is veeeery tanky.
Team Fights
In teamfights you should activate your ultimate, throw the carry behind you and use the slow. So that your team can kill him easily and fast. Using your W-Spell to kill an enemy with low life is a good idea, because then already 2 of the enemys are killed and the other 3 have to run or they die too.
Last Words

  • but the question is, shall i extend the philo stone, or shall i sell it in the late game.? but i wont get philo on volibear. i think heart of gold would be better because of the bonus health for his W-Spell ^^

    His Q does not increase movement speed, you should correct that. It only increases the damage, that is why it is maxed last. Otherwise, this build is pretty standard and it is how I played him. I do believe that the jungle has been changed enough that characters who need expensive items (voli) would better be suited farming top solo with a regrowth at level 1. Giving him the option to go philo or warmogs right away.
