Though I've played Gangplank top a lot Season 2 I've never came around for making a guide for him on how to play him top lane.

Well here it goes.

In this guide you'll learn a little bit more about how GP works top lane.

He is a very solid hero and is very irritating to lane against if you aren't prepared, he also has a global ult that can change the outcome of team fights if placed correctly.

His passive is by far one of the most efficient/noticeable passives in the game. It's like a phage but it adds a small poison magic damage dot that stacks and can really do a number on those who take to many hits.

He can farm well with his Q

Eat oranges to get out of trouble

And have a supporting mini sivir ult which gives you attack damage/speed and movement.

As always these guides are just guidelines and are not the main thing of everything, just what I would prefer as Dyrus. Have fun with it.

RUNES ARE DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ARE FACING. THIS IS JUST THE DEFAULT THAT I USE IN SOLO QUEUE.


You can get armor penn or flat AD, take your pick.

Helps you get back in lane faster if you die to ganks. Help's split push into dragon/baron fights.

You don't really need the extra AP or attack speed, but if you do have this it, will hurt.

Good to finish off people, reduce healing.

Not a bad spell, though your goal here is to do more damage, unless you wanna bait and tank.

Very good in team fights when chasing someone down. IF you don't have flash vs certain things like jarvan ult you get screwed over.

Gangplank's attacks apply a poison that deals 4-21 damage each second and reduces movement speed by 7% (slow stacks up to 3 times). Lasts 3 seconds.



Built in Phage + Poison Dot

Stacks on hit, possibly one of the most annoying passives to face against in the game.

Remember when you're top lane walk outside the brush then Q, then walk back in so you don't get creep aggro.





Gangplank shoots a target unit for 20/45/70/95/120 plus 100% of his attack damage as physical damage. Gangplank gains 4/5/6/7/8 extra gold if Parrrley deals a killing blow. This ability can crit, applies Grog-Soaked Blade and applies on hit effects.

Cooldown 5 seconds

Cost 40/45/50/55/60 mana

Range 625





This skill crits, procs with sheen, gives you life like a normal auto attack. Spammable, good for farming, last hitting, this skill is what makes GP so ridiculous in the laning phase.



Consumes a large quantity of citrus fruit which clears any crowd control effects on him and heals him for 80/150/220/290/360 (+100% of ability power) health.

Cooldown 22/21/20/19/18 seconds

Cost 65 mana

you can level this up to two early if you feel the need to. When you have blue buff you have unlimited sustain with this skill also.



Passive: Gangplank gains 8 / 10 / 12 / 14 / 16 Attack Damage and 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 % Movement Speed.

Active: Gangplank fires his pistol into the air, disabling his passive boost but increasing his Attack Damage by 12 / 19 / 26 / 33 / 40 and Movement Speed by 8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20% and nearby allied champions' Attack Damage and Movement Speed by half that amount for 7 seconds.

Cooldown 25 seconds

Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana




Mini sivir ult that just does tons of damage when you're chasing someone down with your phage and poison procs. gives you like 16 damage at lvl 5 which is ridiculous.



Signals Gangplank's ship to fire upon an area for 8 seconds. Each cannonball deals 75/120/165 (+20% of ability power) damage and slows enemy units 25% for 1.25 seconds.

Cooldown 120/115/110 seconds

Cost 100 mana

Range 20000

that was the concept I used for garen.

Brutalizer is sort of expensive but is totally worth the cost with the cool down and armor pen it gives you.

Cloth VS heavy AD or safe for farming (early wriggles)

regrowth is for vs weak lanes and you wanna farm, get early philo with tp (can still harass until mana is out so when you go back you have full mana from tp)

wriggles = sustain/ward/clear/damage

dorans x2 = for hp and winning the fights 1v1, the extra hp you need to snowball your lane or survive and not die.

-> safest item build, atmogs OP meta.

/ farm lane (this means your dragon fight will be weaker but if you win with it somehow you'll be godly late game. (Build into randuins and sell philo for some other effective item)


VS Easy Lane (Ridiculous Q Crit/Damage) (especially with new masteries)

-> -> -> (if you don't need wriggles, this build turns into triforce + bloodthirster for insane damage, if you don't need a tank)

VS Hard Lane

(Always for Sustain/ward/clear)

As GP you basically beat everyone but here's who you need to watch out for.

you beat him early, but if he gets ganks and farm he'll destroy everyone, so make sure you keep him down.

don't underestimate this champion because all he does is build armor and he does more damage and counters all AD. he also makes you attack slower. you can beat him early but later on if you let him level and farm he'll be scary as fuck as this rock solid golem rapes your team with his ult. so make sure you have ap damage on your team before you pick GP.

You win early, but late game he can spam his W on you even if you orange it. He has always been a farm late game champion, so make sure you keep him down enough to where you're helping your team more then he is with your ult. if he out farms you he'll be a problem late game, but he is also really weak early game if he builds double GP5 items.

she will out push you no matter what. and at 6 she will beat you 1v1, your ult is useless vs her cause she just flashes or jumps out of it with her cougar. try to survive vs her and start cloth armor.

he's not really that strong, but his passive blocks your Q so be careful of the jungle ganks combined with this champion.

poppy is a bruiser killer, she snowballs the hardest, just because nobody plays her, doesn't mean she isn't good. her passive is ridiculous, and is something that shouldn't be ignored.

one of the strongest laners and gank efficient heroes. he falls of late game but don't let him snowball on you early on. he has no mana and can spam his skills to no end, so be careful how you harass him. He also can kill you easily with his ult + ignite if you aren't careful. Check out players like "I will dominate" for an example of a good renekton.

You can beat him with sustain but if you let him farm to much he'll just snowball on you. if he has ignite, he's planning to kill you at 6. If he has teleport, he's planning to rape your teammates that aren't prepared. you beat him early, but once he has tabi and level 6 you should be careful how fast he pushes your lane and takes your jungle if your team isn't prepared.

fuck this champion too. if you don't start cloth, expect to get raped and outpushed. build wriggles ASAP.

One of the best laners in the game, he doesn't contribute much to team fights in certain situations, but in lane he is by far the most annoying to deal with. He will beat you straight up so make sure you try to kite, or farm vs him. Once he has wriggles he will be unkillable, so try to out farm him and keep your tower alive. ult around the map and help your team because he is ungankable once he has wriggles + boots unless you dive him with 3 people.

not a big threat, but can still lane vs you and never die.

you should be able to rape this champion, don't Q his clone though.

you win but don't underestimate jungle gank + knockup

get wriggles and you can sustain and make it a passive farming lane.

that's right this dumb bitch is so annoying to play against that she gets her own section




If we think about how irelia works and you wanna build to counter her you basically need this.

to counter irelia's true damage you need MORE HP and yes armor reduces her damage

so buy this dumb ass meta game item next.




once you get to this point it isn't as bad, you can kind of 1v1 her but she's still annoying. What do I do next?

well first of all you need to attack faster and crit so go ahead and get a phantom dancer, believe it or not it's all the damage you need.


Then you can get a randuins which slows her attack which really helps cause then she can't do shit to you.


if you have all 6 of these items replace wriggles for bloodthirster eventually and you have became GP the tank irritating orange eatting bruiser that kills everybody.

of course there are other items like IE, triforce but lets face it, you're never gonna be able to kill her so atleast make it harder for her to kill you so she dies faster then you do.



BUT WAIT DYRUS HOW DO I CHASE HER?


YOU DONT SHE HAS GHOST YOU HAVE A PASSIVE, YOU CAN GET TRIFORCE (PHAGE) TO CHASE HER BUT IT WON'T DO MUCH UNTIL YOU GOT ATMAS SO DREAM ON SHE'S STUPID AS FKC.

Yup Rumble gets his own Chapter too.

Basically you win early at lvl 1, but once he hits 4 you're in trouble until you get some items.

you usually build a vamp scepter before these items.

What you need to do against rumble is...

DO NOT Q WHEN HE PRESSES W, RUN BACK YOU NEED MOVEMENT AND SLOW AND DAMAGE so the traits of triforce are not bad here.

YOU NEED MR SO HAVE MERC THREADS.

He will beat you in lane with tabi, so just hope that you get a crit off when his shield turns off.

He will beat you straight up, until he has his spells on cooldown or overheated.

He is a pain to play vs against tryn OR GP but you can work your way around this.

If you're against double AP/WOTA you're probably fucked cause this mechanic is broken as shit and needs to be removed from the game.

If you lose to garen as GP then I pray for your family to see you at your funeral of rehab and braindeadness.

Early: Q like a boss, always have a ward or two at tribrush or river either or. Normal Laning Phase

Mid: Use ult's for team fights or small skrimishes. TP for dragon, or saving a tower.

Late: ward baron use your spells.

All game: Farm as much as possible while being useful to your team. Gangplank is a hero that is strong throughout the game so just make sure you're doing something


Watch videos of GP for a better example, it's kinda hard to explain it in text. It's something you have to experience.

Auto attack the closest person possible, you can dot each person to slow them down if you need to protect your AD carry. You can use your Q on their AD carry to zone them out. If you get low or stunned use your W to remove the CC and continuously kite with your Q, while always using your E. Use your R on chokepoints to space them out, if they run through it make sure it's put in the right spot to do as much damage as possible.

If you have flash up stay around the fight and use Q. If you have no mana and can't go in for an auto attack, just go back if you're low.
