Why AP Soraka?Soraka is a very underappreciated mid laner because she doesn't have very high burst or simply because people don't realize her strenght. She can outlane nearly everyone mid because she can
1. push fast,
2. is highly resistant to damage,
3. has very good sustain,
4. high utility due to 2 heals, 1 silence and exhaust.
This allows you to easily out push the enemy and constantly steal their junglers creeps.
Mid and late game you start getting really strong because you can kite the enemy with Rylais and the constant MR debuff allows for strong double AP team compositions.
Masteries and RunesWith my rune page you start with 60MR at level 1, which results in the enemy midlaner not being able to force you out of lane and stop your constant pushing. I take movementspeed quints because you can usually take the enemy wraiths pretty safely, skillshots are easier to dodge and it complements Sorakas playstyle with Rylais kiting.
Masteries are either 9/21/0 or 0/21/9. I prefer 9 in offense as her bananas are pretty weak and the 10% magic pen is very noticeable when the enemy has like 150MR, even though you could shred 120 of that amount.
You take 21 in defense because your first goal shouldn't be to deal damage, but rather survive and provide that constant debuff and helping your team with heals and silences. And of course, to kite them.
Flash or Ghost doesn't really matter. I prefer Flash because it's OP.
Soraka is tanky enough to fully make use of Ghost.
I take Exhaust as it is usually way better in teamfights than Ignite and further increases your high utility. See that bruiser diving you or your AD carry? No problem, heal, silence, kite, heal and if that is not enough, exhaust him.
Increases surrounding allies' magic resistance by 16.
Pretty good if you go mid. Free 1200 gold for your entire team.
Strikes nearby enemy units for 60/85/110/135/160 (+40% of ability power) magic damage and reduces their Magic Resistance by 8/9/10/11/12 for 8 seconds This effect stacks up to 10 times.
Cooldown 2.5 seconds
Cost 35/40/45/50/55 mana
This is your main skill. You can clear minion waves very fast and if you manage to hit your enemy in mid often enough he is usually forced to back off or take very damage from your silence, or even get debuffed further.
It is also the main reason why we buy Rylais because it provides a AOE slow with a very low cooldown.
W: Astral Blessing
Restores 70/140/210/280/350 (+45% of ability power) health and grants 25/50/75/100/125 bonus armor for 5 seconds.
Cooldown 20 seconds
Cost 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 / 160 mana
Use it to sustain yourself, use it for the armor buff. Pretty self-explanatory.
If cast on an allied champion, restores 25/50/75/100/125 mana to the target, and an equal amount to self. Does not double on self cast.
If cast on an enemy champion, silences them for 1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 seconds and deals 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 (+75% of ability power) magic damage.
Cooldown 10 seconds
Basically gives you free mana. It has high damage that also silences the enemy for a long duration. The damage is further increased by your starcall debuff. Also, it applies the full slow from Rylais.
Instantly restores 200 / 320 / 440 (+70% of ability power) health to all allied champions.
Cooldown 120 / 90 / 60 seconds
Cost 100/175/250 mana
Another heal. The difference is that it has no armor buff on it and it heals everyone on your team and can be cast anywhere on the map. With no AP you can heal someone for 790 HP, while providing 125 armor.
Top or Mid?Soraka is very efficient against champions that can't push fast or are melee. You are pretty much guaranteed to win your lane, if their jungler doesn't babysit him. It all comes down to your team composition whether you are top or mid.
If you have a melee AD, go mid, because they usually have a harder time against ranged champs. However, running double AP tends to be very efficient with Soraka. In this case it's up to you where you lane.
Consider to use armor reds (in most cases) if you are top and prioritize heal before silence.
Item BuildsThe three most important stats on Soraka are:
1. Cooldown reduction
- This stat allows you to starcall faster, thus debuffing them and making them very fragile against
magic damage. Don't forget that you can permaslow them with Rylais.
- It allows you to heal and silence more often, therefore increase your sustain, damage and utility
by a large amount.
- Sorakas skills, even without AP, are pretty good.
- You want to debuff and slow them as long as possible.
- Your team survives longer, as long as you are still alive.
- Even though you play more as an AP/support, you still want to do damage, because you are usually
mid, therefore leaving you without a 'real' AP carry (in terms of burst).
- Your damage will fall off lategame without AP.
- Your skills actually scale pretty good. (With 40% CDR, Q has 1.5 sec cooldown with 0.4 AP ratio.
E scales with 0.75, which is as high as with most other casters.)
is the best item you can get. It provides you with a lot of health and gives your abilities a slow.
You are pretty squishy without your skills. By spamming starcall you will eventually go oom. You need CDR to apply starcall debuffs faster.
Frozen Heart is the best defensive item on Soraka. If you get this, don't get CDR boots.
Your damage skyrockets with this item and starcall stacks. Your skills scale pretty good. Core item on nearly every AP caster.
Allows you to survive longer and gives your team additional spellvamp on their abilities. If someone on your team gets this too, the aura will stack for you and him.
Shreds their magic resist even further and gives you a nice amount of MR.
You usually want to rush your Rylais. It's ok to buy, but only if you are fed.
Without a doubt, one of the best early game items. Very cost efficient.
Can't be upgraded though and must be sold later in the game.
Soraka doesn't need that much mana. Don't get this.
I usually get this when I have a hard time in lane. Delays your core build, but it's ok if you want to ensure that you outsustain the enemy.
If they focus you or have suppresion, get this.
Costs too much, for what it gives for Soraka. You usually are tanky enough, especially with spellvamp.
Bad item. Once their MR is low enough, this item provides you with zero additional stats.
Early GameYour playstyle is pretty much the same as with Mordekaiser. You push your lane, go jungle, come back and push. The enemy can't stop you from doing that because you are very tanky. Don't forget to buy wards, even though you are highly resistible to ganks with your heals and silence.
Your goal is to outfarm the enemy and force him to stay at his tower, otherwise he will lose EXP and gold. You can clear a minion wave in ~6 seconds.
You can even 'gank' other lanes with your silence. If you have nothing to do mid, go heal your teammates.
Don't forget these. All you basically do is pushing, which should force their jungler to gank you. Silence him when he comes, so he can't initiate on you.
Lane matchupsI only cover some of the most common mid lanes, as this is usually where you are laning.
She is very squishy and slow. She can't push pre-6 if she doesn't level her Q first, which would weaken her R-E combo. You should win.
If you position yourself between his caster and melee minions he can either hit you and eventually lose CS to the tower, or hit the minions and let you free farm. You should win.
She might be tough, because she has very high burst and sustained damage and can hit you and the minions at the same time. Consider being more defensive than usually.
If you don't constantly get hit by barrels, it's a easy lane. He can push faster than you when his Q oneshots your minions. Otherwise he can't do much. Use your silence to cancel his drunken rage, if you are fast enough.
He can't push at all without blue. Abuse this and force to sit him at his tower all day. But remember that casting your Q gives him a stack for his E. Play passively when he is getting scary.
Same with Kassadin, she can't push. Don't get bursted and quickly push your lane.
He is a good pusher, you are a better one. Don't tank visions though.
Same as with Malz. If you push fast enough, she can't hit all minions with her W.
As usual, just push as his mana costs are really high early on and his auto attacks are weak. He might burst you down at some point, simply because he is Ryze.
He can't push fast enough without a high level W and his Ult.
Easy, just push (who would've thought?). Pray that you don't get bursted down.
He can push faster and one shot you by midgame. Try to time your silence, so you more time to run away.
Mid GameBy midgame you usually have your Rylais. This is where you can start killing your opponent by applying a lot of starcall stacks in a very short time, while they are silenced and slowed. You basically continue to push and try to get dragon and towers.
Late GameBy lategame you are super tanky, have high heals and hard hitting skills. You should be able to solo nearly everyone on their team as long as they don't are too tanky.
In teamfights you want to hit as many people as possible with your Q. You are tanky, but don't dive their carries. You should try to position yourself like this:
Your carry/support - their bruisers - You - your bruisers - their carries/support.
Your goal is to keep you and your AD carry alive (prioritize yourself if he isn't strong enough). By healing your tanks before they dive in, lets them live for a way longer period of time, if you manage to time it correctly.
Final CommentsSoraka is not a burst caster. She provides high utility with pretty good sustained damage. I feel like she is a stronger version of Vlad. With this build she is tankier than him and has higher damage over a longer period of time.
The only downside with her is that people usually think you are trolling, if you want to go AP, because they see her as a pure support with no potential to be a strong caster. If they are okay with your pick, go prove them wrong.
