Introduction
Olaf is the manliest champion in all of League of Legends. He makes Tryndamere look like Justin Bieber. His mighty axes, ferocious roars, and Thor-like lighting makes him one of the most frightening champions out there. While he is more commonly found in top lane, he possesses a lot of potential in the jungle as well. With some of the fastest clear times, True Damage, an AOE slow, CC immunity and an unmatched level of manliness, Olaf brings a wide variety of elements to any battle.

Pros:
  • Manly
  • Among the fastest clear times
  • True Damage
  • CC Immune
  • Snow Balls

Cons:
  • Kited without [skills/olaf/r.png][summoners/ghost.png]
  • Poor mobility (No gap closer)

Masteries
[http://i.imgur.com/lXzdc.png]

Olaf actually has a fairly versatile mastery set up. You could go 21/9/0 for a more damage oriented build. Or, you could run 9/21/0 to be a little more tanky. But I personally prefer, and recommend, my featured 9/12/9 because it works well with your intrinsic versatility. The points in Offense greatly help his clear time and overall damage. The points in Defense are critical for jungle sustain. Meanwhile, the points in Utility help with your mana issues, provide some much needed MS, and an extension of buff duration.

  • Marks: A couple options you could run here. I like the AD cause it scales well with your [skills/olaf/q.png] and you already get armor pen from your [skills/olaf/r.png]. Also, you don't really need AS cause you already get some from [skills/olaf/p.png]. However, if you wish to run more armor pen that wouldn't be a bad option either.
  • Seals: You have to run armor in the jungle, period.
  • Glyphs: MR/LvL is ideal to increase your durability in battle.
  • Quintessences: A few options here. I think MS is strong because you have poor mobility and it also helps clear times. But if you wanted to run more AD/Armor Pen please feel free.

Summoner Spells
[summoners/smite.png][summoners/ghost.png]

I wouldn't recommend any other summoner spells. Smite is a given in the jungle. As for Ghost, your innately poor mobility demands it. A small Flash wouldn't help you much, but Ghost along with [skills/olaf/r.png] is a scary combo. With those two spells you can stick on any target.
Skills
[skills/olaf/p.png] Passive: Berzerker Rage

For each 1% of health missing, Olaf's attack speed is increased by 1%.

A decent passive for the jungle. A little extra AS never hurt anybody (except for the other team).

Trick: Try staying a little bit lower in the jungle (~40% HP) so you will have more AS to clear it quicker.

[skills/olaf/q.png] Q: Undertow

Axe Throw
Damage increased to 80-260 from 50-210
Scaling changed to +1.0 bonus AD from +0.5 total AD
Base cooldown reduced to 8 seconds from 10
Cooldown reduction for picking up the axe reduced to 4.5 seconds from 6

Cost 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 / 75mana
Range 1000

An amazing skill in the jungle and during ganks. This is what allows Olaf to have some of the quickest clear times out there.

Trick 1: Most importantly, try using this ability at an angle which would cause you to run over it so you can reduce the cooldown. To do this, try waiting for them to run a little bit so you can gauge their walking route. Once you determine the direction they're running you can lead it just ahead and then you will inevitably run over the axe. This also applies in the jungle, use it just in front of you so you automatically pick it right back up.

Trick 2: This spell provides sight into brush and fog of war. So be sure to throw it into a brush instead of face checking it.

Trick 3: Don't forget to use the slow on this ability as an escape tool or peel for your teammates as well.

[skills/olaf/w.png] W: Vicious Strikes

For 6 seconds, Olaf's attack damage is increased by 7 / 14 / 21 / 28 / 35 base damage plus 1% of his max health. While active, Olaf gains 9 / 12 / 15 / 18 / 21% lifesteal and spell vamp.

Cost 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60mana
Range 700

A great ability to increase clear time and sustain in the jungle (and battles). This spell is one of the reasons why you want to prioritze health over other stats.

Trick: Be sure to use this spell just before you cast any damaging spell (including Smite) so you can benefit from the spell vamp. Also, the AD steroid from this ability will make your [skills/olaf/q.png] hit much harder.

[skills/olaf/e.png] E: Reckless Swing

Olaf deals 100 / 160 / 220 / 280 / 340 true damage to his target and inflicts 40 / 64 / 88 / 112 / 136 true damage to himself.

Cost none
Range 325

An immensely powerful and satisfying spell. There's nothing like calling down a bolt of lightning to strike your foes down with True Damage. This spell is extremely helpful during ganks and it maintains its effectiveness throughout the entire game because it's True Damage. It's on a ridicously short cooldown so you can spam this quite frequently.

Trick 1: Want to proc your passive in the jungle? Then cast this on a monster so you damage yourself and gain that helpful AS from your passive.

Trick 2: Just to reiterate, it's True Damage! So don't be scared to cast it on an [champ/alistar.png] during his ult (or some other mega tanky person).

[skills/olaf/r.png] R: Ragnarok

Active: For 6 seconds, Olaf is immune to disables and provides 30/45/60 Armor and Magic Resist instead of 20/30/40 flat damage reduction

Passive: Olaf has 10 / 20 / 30 increased armor penetration.

Cost 100 / 75 / 50mana
Range 400

This is where the majority of Olaf's manliness derives. You'll be screaming DEMACIA in pride, while your enemies will be screaming in fear. It's the only move in the game that provides complete CC immunity. Remember, with the new change to it you can cast it while CC'd. So try to wait until a hard CC before you use it, however, if you're taking tons of damage use it to give your resistances a boost.

Trick: If you feel your masculinity decreasing during a fight then use this to instantly bolster your manliness.

Skill Order
[http://i.imgur.com/IyjdX.png]

This skill order is optimal for a balance in jungle clear time and ganking potential. The 2 points in [skills/olaf/q.png] is plenty to clear the jungle with exceptional speed. In addition, by only putting 2 points into [skills/olaf/q.png] you're able to allocate 5 points to [skills/olaf/e.png] so you can have it maxed by level 9. This will make your ganking extremely strong. Furthermore, since your Blue buff will eventually fade and you'll most likely give it to your mid AP carry, you won't be able to spam [skills/olaf/q.png] anymore anyways so there's really no reason in putting more points into it until level 10.

Obviously, if you absolutely wanted to max [skills/olaf/q.png] first it would still be pretty strong because of the damage and slow scaling. However, as noted, I find my featured skill order the most advantageous to your role as a jungler. In either case, I would suggest maxing [skills/olaf/w.png] last.
Item Builds
Olaf is the definition of a Bruiser. In my opinion, there's no other champion that fits this role more appropriately than Olaf. With that in mind, we shall be gearing Olaf in a manner to enhance these elements. These items are directed towards maximizing tankiness, damage, and maybe some utility. Clearly, you will almost never be able to acquire a full build, so some of these items you will seldom encounter.

Start

[items/cloth-armor.png][items/health-potion5.png]
I recommend starting this most of the time. This is because of the current meta of hyper aggressive junglers ([champ/drmundo.png][champ/shyvana.png][champ/udyr.png][champ/leesin.png]). So you'll most likely run into one of them in the jungle and this set up increases your survivability as well as sustain. In addition, since you're also a very fast jungler you will want to try to counter jungle as well. Thus, these items benefit that element the most also.

[items/boots-of-speed.png][items/health-potion3.png]
Occasionally I will start these for a more gank oriented set up. When do you know when to gank or counter jungle? I know it's blurry at times, but in general you would want a more gank oriented set up if your lanes are easily gankable. Refer to the ganking section to learn more about gankable lanes.

Core

[items/wriggles-lantern.png]
Get this as soon as possible for obvious reasons.

[items/heart-of-gold.png]
Grab this next to start accruing gold and to give boost to your HP. HP scales really well with Olaf because of [skills/olaf/w.png] and you already get resistances from [skills/olaf/r.png].

Mid Game

[items/mercurys-treads.png][items/ninja-tabi.png]
Next you want to upgrade your boots. Most of the time you'll grab [items/mercurys-treads.png] for the Tenacity and extra MR. But sometimes if their team is heavy on AD you can pick up [items/ninja-tabi.png].

[items/warmogs-armor.png][items/frozen-mallet.png]
After you upgrade boots start working on either of these. Honestly, I don't have a particularly strict method behind when to get which one. Generally it just depends on how much gold I have at the time I'm at base. But you could scan your team and theirs and determine which is more appropriate. If you're the main tank I would suggest [items/warmogs-armor.png], but if you're more of an off tank and would like some chasing power then I would go for [items/frozen-mallet.png]. It really comes down to player preference because they're both strong options.

[items/negatron-cloak.png][items/hexdrinker.png]
Pick up one of these early if their AP is tearing you apart. You can upgrade it to something else much later in your build. Obviously, if you want more damage aim for [items/hexdrinker.png], but if you need a more frugal way to attain MR go for the [items/negatron-cloak.png].

Late Game

[items/atmas-impaler.png]
You should have a large amount of HP by now so this item will do wonders. Although, if they don't have a lot of AD I would consider passing it for other items.

[items/zekes-herald.png]
While you might find this more commonly on a support, it still goes very well with Olaf's kit. Often times, your support won't even be able to afford this. So if your team has a lot of AD then consider picking this up for your team.

[items/frozen-heart.png][items/randuins-omen.png]
If they have heavy AD (or if their single AD is doing very well) then grab either one of these, or even both. The CDR from [items/frozen-heart.png] enables you to spam [skills/olaf/e.png] more often.

[items/elixir-of-fortitude.png][items/elixir-of-agility.png]
Grab these when you know a big team fight or Baron is about to go down. Being a man, Olaf has an affinity for steroids such as these.

Super Late Game

[items/banshees-veil.png][items/force-of-nature.png][items/maw-of-malmortius.png]
If you grabbed a [items/negatron-cloak.png] earlier then upgrade it to either a [items/banshees-veil.png] or [items/force-of-nature.png]. I usually go [items/banshees-veil.png] because of the extra HP, but there's nothing wrong with getting [items/force-of-nature.png]. If you decided to get a [items/hexdrinker.png] for some extra damage then upgrade it to [items/maw-of-malmortius.png] and you will be an absolute monster. This item was basically designed for Olaf.

[items/trinity-force.png]
In very rare circumstances you might be able to squeeze this into your build. Granted, that's only if you didn't build a [items/frozen-mallet.png]. If you built a [items/warmogs-armor.png] then this item will be a great boost to your DPS and the slow proc will come in very handy.

[items/the-bloodthirster.png][items/guardian-angel.png]
Lastly, exchange your [items/wriggles-lantern.png] for either of these. If you want to go Man Mode on some people then clearly you'd want [items/the-bloodthirster.png]. However, if you want to be an unstoppable beast then get [items/guardian-angel.png] and no one will be able to kill you.

Jungling and Ganking

Route 1: (Video Route) Normally you want to start with Blue Buff so you can spam [skills/olaf/q.png] in the jungle. So simply start at Wolves, then get a leash on Blue, then to Wraiths, then to Golems, then Red (Smite should be up), then Wolves again. At this point you should be level 4. You can either go back and finish up Wraiths and Golems again, start ganking, or try counter jungling. It's a very simple route and you'll clear it very quickly.

Route 2: If you get invaded you can start at your Wraiths, then Red (with leash), then Golems, then end at Wolves. You won't be level 4 with this route since your Blue got taken, so you can try to invade their jungle or go back to camps that are about to respawn in yours.

Ganking: Since you can clear the jungle so rapidly, you will have many opportunities to gank. As always, when attempting a gank you want to first visually scan the lane and determine if it's even gankable--This includes Lane composition and ward placements. For example, say you have a [champ/katarina.png] mid and you want to gank their [champ/ahri.png]. As you're probably aware, this will go quite poorly. Neither of you have a hard CC to hold that slippery fox in position and she will just dash away. With that in mind, you want to gank lanes that can help contribute to your ganks. You can put out a considerable amount of damage and a solid slow. So any lane with a hard CC will work nicely. However, if an enemy lane is over extended then that's a free kill. If you have your [summoners/ghost.png] up, and Red Buff, then you can easily chase them down the entire lane.

As far as the specifics go, you want to lead your [skills/olaf/q.png] in such an angle that you would run over it when chasing them. So, if you're coming from behind don't use it until they start running back towards their tower. Otherwise, you will have used it and throw it behind them (which is towards your tower) and then when you chase them back to theirs you won't be able to run over it to reduce the cooldown. Once you get close to them spam your [skills/olaf/e.png] every chance you get. And if they hit you with some type of slow or hard CC then use [skills/olaf/r.png] and continue the chase.

Counter Jungling: Your quick clear times also give you enough time to counter jungle very effectively. I don't want to go into specifics because this isn't a jungling guide, it's just an Olaf guide. If you wish to learn more about counter jungling then consult a more general jungling guide. Nevertheless, you can categorize junglers into 3 types: aggressive jungling, aggressive ganking, and passive jungling. Some of these roles will overlap, but the main ones you can take advantage of are the last 2. For those aggressive gankers, once you see them attempt a gank then quickly sneak into their jungle and steal the big monster from their camp. For the passive junglers, you can generally predict their route and then steal camps accordingly.

Dragon: I normally don't make a dragon section specifically, but Olaf is an exception because he can kill it faster than any jungler (except maybe for [champ/shaco.png]). If you see their jungler ganking top, and your mid and bot are under control then you can attempt to steal dragon. Along with [items/wriggles-lantern.png] procs and spamming [skills/olaf/q.png][skills/olaf/e.png], you can kill dragon in about 15-20 seconds just by yourself.

Team Fights
As shown throughout the guide your role is a Bruiser. This means that it's your duty (hehe) to suppress their carries by getting up close and personal. The enemy team will need about 2-3 people to control you, but even then their attempts are futile. With [summoners/ghost.png][skills/olaf/r.png] you are unstoppable for 6 seconds. Depending on how much damage you're pulling or how fragile their carry is, that may very well be enough time to destroy them just by yourself. But more than likely you probably won't be able to kill them unless you get help from your team. But since you distracted 2-3 of their team, then your team should be able to finish off the others and then come to help you clean up your target(s).

Since your role is so specific it isn't too hard to do, but I'll cover some basics. First, you ideally want to try to slow as many people as possible with your [skills/olaf/q.png]. But once you start chasing down their carry just keep spamming it on him to keep him slowed. Also, keep casting [skills/olaf/e.png] every time it is up to maximize damage. Activate your [skills/olaf/w.png] and [skills/olaf/r.png] to become a complete monster.

Just be aware of their damage output. Even some games where I'm godly tanky I've been torn apart by just blindly running in there. Since you have poor initiation you should try and wait for your team to get off some sort of initiation and then you follow up with going beast mode on them. But if you're sure they can't blow you up then feel free to charge in there with your ferocious roars.
Game Play
Final Comments
Olaf is the pinnacle of manliness and will go great with almost any team. He has a tremendous amount of strength in the jungle and has very few weaknesses. He can shred through any target with his True Damage and can take quite a beating. With your new found knowledge about this vicious Viking, you can now go pillage your helpless foes.

What do you think about an early Brutalizer? In most of my games I go Boots>Wriggles>HoG>Giants Belt>Brutalizer>Warmogs/Mallet while obviously getting Boots 2 somewhere in there depending on the game/my gold at the time. I run Arpen Marks/Quints and with his ultimate at rank 1+Brut you get I think its 55 armor pen, this gives you a pretty obscene amount of damage for early/mid game while still being extremely tanky your Qs(Which have such a low CD when you can pick them back up) will be chunking people extremely hard. I play mostly solo queue so this is probably better there as I feel I sort of need to be doing more damage in solo queue since its harder to rely on your team to do it while you tank.

So yeah what do you think about an early Brutalizer?

don't get wits end on olaf. most of his damage comes from Q + E. You need CDR and health for olaf, not AS. If you need MR, there are better options (like hexdrinker/maw, FoN)

Also frozen mallet is kind of eh, he already has slow. If your team lacks cc then it's a good buy, otherwise don't bother.

@ZinG8D One thing you should always try to avoid on olaf is building Attack Speed. He doesnt need it thanks to his passive. He is much better off with Maw of Malmortius because with your passive, your attack speed increases when you are lower health, then with Maw, your damage increases when you are lower health. So combine that with your w and maybe a wriggles, you are so hard to kill because the lower you are, the more damage you acquire. The reason Frozen Mallet isnt always an item you want to build on Olaf is 1) its really expensive, 2) it gives less health than warmogs and with scalings on your w with health and the fact that reckless swing does damage to you, you need lots of health, 3) You have Axes for slow and they are really good for chasing considering the fact that they refresh when you pick them up, making FMallet unnecessary.

Do you still recommend going atmas even after the warmogs and atmas nerfs or will it be better to go frozen mallet wits end ?
