IntroductionHello! My name is Parnellyx. I have played Evelynn top for a few months now. Ever since the patch ive been trying to step her up as my Main because now she is VERY powerful, if played right.
Before and After the Evelynn patch i honestly havent ever noticed one Evelynn whose actually played her correctly, which is why everyone called her *Not Viable* I believe this statement was false, but thanks to those guys now she is strong as Hell. Meaning i can Roflstomp anyone i play against!
I also have noticed that almost every Evelynn has jungled her, which i believe is a weak spot for her, due to her counters. I honestly believe Evelynn is better going MID and in the jungle because she can get much more Farm, which is what she needs to be effective late game(Her strong point).
***IMPORTANT*** Most of this guide was in progress up to 2 months ago when was not as strong. She is much stronger than she is said to be in this guide. And yes this was before AP Evelynn.
MasteriesI like to go 9/21/0 masteries on specializing in Attack Damage and attack speed on the offensive side.
The Attack damage allows Evelynn to last hit easier early and also to take advantage of her high attack speed. The attack speed is great because you will be building on hit late in the game. Additionally, i get a point in magic penetration because most of your on-hit items will be doing magic damage, not physical.
I put 21 points in defense to help sustain your lane easier because Evelynn is squishy until you build into your items. The armor helps against AD laners, which you will usually face, and the MR obviously helps against AP. You will be getting a lot of resistances which will help make your HP and HP5 benefit more.
You can change this around depending on your playstyle and who you are against. Utility masteries can work with the movement speed and XP gain, but i prefer sustain, over escaping and being higher level and gold. You dont really need cooldown reduction because has only a 1.5 second cooldown and she doesnt rely on her abilities to do damage.
RunesI like to go basic Solo Top runes, going with Flat armor, MR Per level, Movement speed, and Attack Speed.
I believe attack speed runes are best on Evelynn when going top because you will be building on-hit and this will allow you to do more damage than other runes would. You wont need to build damage, though it is optional. I dont get AD runes because it won't help your late game much because you wont be building crit or any other AD effects. Armor penetration is usually the best choice for champions but majority of damage will be coming from On-hit items.
Flat armor is usually what you should use as any solo top because most solo tops will deal physical damage. You can also have a page with magic resistance in case you face such match up. Health is okay but wont benefit you the most in most situations.
I always have magic resistance per level on Evelynn or really any non-mid champion because it provides the most stats on a glyph. Additionally, it will benefit you a lot late game by protecting you from major AoE that you will usually experience in team fights or burst. Overall a must take rune in most situations.
Quintessences are optional but i like movement speed because it makes a big difference in sketchy situations. You can escape enemies by just this amount and it has great synergy with . It is a toss up though for what you want.
Really it isnt even worth explaining why you get flash on Evelynn. Its a *Get out of Jail for Free* Card. You can use it to escape over walls, bush dodge, Flash to your turret, even to catch up to people! Its especially good on Evelynn because due to her passive you can Flash next to someone before they even see you. This also has great Synergy with insuring that you really shouldnt ever die. Thats the great thing about Evelynn is you pretty much never die!
if your versing someone with strong dueling capability(Ex. Riven, Jax, etc.). This can win you fights early, help carry you back if you fall behind, has a great late game presence, and it gives you a SLOW. A slow is great because Eve has high movement speed and no CC(Other than her ultimate). While i do always carry dont hesitate with .
Ignite is great on Evelynn to help her Early game and get her early kills, which is her weakest point in the game. Its also greatly helps her against sustained Top laners(Ex. Yorick, Mundo, etc.). , dont hesitate with Its all a matter of opinion what you want for a second spell.
Passive: Shadow Walk
Evelynn stealths into the shadows only being seen by nearby enemy champions or true sight. While stealthed, Evelynn regenerates 1% of her maximum mana every second.
Casting spells, taking damage or dealing damage reveals Evelynn for 8 seconds.
A lot of people complain about this passive and say the vision reduction isnt strong enough but i disagree. You can really fool people with this because you arent detectable by minions and wards. They usually will feel safe against you but they will most likely forget about your passive. Also, the mana regeneration really insures that Evelynn wont go OOM ever, unless she just came out of a fight. Late game it allows you to roam effectively and you wont ever be detected by wards which is a huge aspect of the game late.
Q: Hate Spike
Evelynn fires a line of spikes through a nearby enemy, dealing magic damage to all enemy units in its path.
Hate Spike is Evelynn's signature ability, probably her most important. The damage was greatly increased by the patch a ton meaning it will actually harass the enemy. The range buff helped a TON because this will allow you to farm 10x more than you used to. This is your only ranged farming ability so make sure you use it well. Another reason for Hate Spike being so good is that you can proc every 2 seconds! That means you will be practically doing 200 bonus damage with every proc. that is Insane!
You have ranged farming, pushing power, and dueling power. When it comes to farming though, this ability takes a lot of skill to master.
W: Dark Frenzy
(Passive): Evelynn's spell hits on enemy champions grant her bonus movement speed for 3 seconds. This effect stacks up to 4 times.
(Active): Evelynn removes all slows affecting her and gains bonus movement speed for 3 seconds. Champion kills and assists refresh Dark Frenzy's cooldown.
I honestly love movement abilities because they are just annoying as hell to the enemy team. This can allow to to get to lane faster, roam better, close gap on enemy, chase, escape, juke, etc. The possibilities are endless with this ability. I do though max this last because it really doesnt give you and dueling power and it is a pretty decent buff at level 1.
Its also amazing because it removes slows! And yes that does include but it doesnt remove other debuffs. Still, i about fall off my chair laughing when 2 people are chasing me and blow their exhausts and other slows on me. This will allow you to avoid a lot of ganks and surprise attack the enemy when your invisible. Also it gives you bonus movement speed when using an ability, meaning the more damage you deal, the harder it is to get away from you.
Evelynn slashes a target twice, dealing magic damage with each strike. Evelynn then gains bonus attack speed for 3 seconds.
While most people think of when they think of Evelynn, i think of this. Without this ability you couldnt have On-hit Evelynn. The attack speed buff is tied for best in game along with Fiora's E but is even better because it deals 300+ Damage at level 5, which is just stupidly high for single ability especially with that attack speed buff.
I Max this ability first because it gives you insane harass. Also if they choose to duel you the attack speed bonus should usually give you a much better bonus. Against anyone with a week laning phase or early game you can pretty much zone them out this this as you farm.
In teamfights once you have you should just be practically nuking enemies with your high attack speed.
R: Agony's Embrace
Evelynn impales all enemies in the targeted area, dealing magic damage equal to a percentage of their maximum health and slowing their movement speed for 2 seconds.
Evelynn siphons their pain, gaining a shield that grows in strength for each enemy hit and lasts up to 6 seconds.
This ultimate is extremely powerful in teamfights if used right. Just imagine all 5 enemy players have 1/4 of their health gone which makes it 2x easier in the teamfight. It also provides a very nice slow for chasing, escaping, or just for teamfights not allowing them to get in the right position. Probably my favorite part of the spell though is the shield. At level 16 landing this on all 5 enemies will shield you for 1500 damage over 6 seconds. Wow. If you have a lot of Resistance and Armor you might as well make the shield 3000. This ultimate is just so good with Offtank Eve because honestly the shield rarely gets broken. You become a super tank while you already are a super carry. Landing the right ultimate at the right time is extremely game breaking and determines a good eve, from a bad one.
Early GameEarly game Evelynn is pretty decent. With your Q you can farm minions fairly easy to get an early advantage over your opponent. Also you can out harass most opponents. Your Q and E cant hit an opponent hard and force them to flee. Use this harass advantage to zone out your opponent.Be careful though. If you haven't zoned out the opponent very much or got any kills on him, they can usually out damage you at level 6.
Your ultimate is made to be a team killer, which it does very good at. Against one person though you get a 150 HP shield and it deals 20% of their max HP. It is pretty much as effective as Volibear's W when you are at low HP. Dont walk up to an opponent and expect your ultimate to be game breaking against him. I usually just save my ultimate for 3 situations: your teammates gank, it provides a nice slow. An enemy ganks, you again get a very nice slow and a shield which will pretty much make you immune to ganks unless your extremely over extended. Finally, when an opponent is unleashing all of his combos on me to try to kill me. In this situation you can use your ultimate early to run away and negate a bunch of damage or you can ult at the last second when your enemy thinks they have secured the kill, as your shield might save you(ex. Ignite). Pre-6 Evelynn is pretty strong against most opponents and you can use this to your advantage. But you need to play more careful and defensive after your enemy turns level 6.
Mid GameMid game is where Evelynn struggles the most by far. You can easily be zoned out by an enemy and you cant get much farm or kills. Try to freeze the lane whenever you can to make up for all the minions you lose if your against a strong laner. You can also roam and gank because you have GP5 items to make up for loss of gold and you avoid .
If your opponent is weak, you should have no problem getting through to late game, which is where Evelynn shines most. If your opponent has a weak mid game or ultimate you can continue to zone out the enemy and harass them with and whenever you can. Be sure you though, because any gank can turn the tide of the lane. Try to farm as much as you can though. Evelynn benefits probably the most of any top laner when farmed because of the GP5 we build for extra gold and her late game effectiveness. You should be able to snowball and deny the enemy your against if your winning your lane. If your struggling, gank, freeze the lane, and just play defensively.
Team FightsTeam fights are where off-tank Evelynn shine. Her overall tankiness makes her almost unkillable and her damage makes her unavoidable. In most situations you should initiate with when 4 or 5 enemies are grouped up so you can do tons of damage and slow them all, preventing them from escaping a fight. Use to sprint towards their carries as you take them down one by one. You usually dont have to worry about being killed because your shield from will absorb up to 1500 damage, which combined with your resistances make your shield pretty awesome.
Here is the order for who you should go for. ADC > AP Carry > everyone else depending on squishiness. Always though go for the squishiest target so you can make it a 4v5 fight in an instant. Take down targets from squishiness to tankiest and win majority of team fights.
Easy MatchupsSurprisingly Evelynn beats Darius pretty easy in lane. Originally i lost the lane early against the first Darius i was against because i kept running away from him after he hooked me, which you can escape a lot of damage from your W, but i finally decided to turn around and fight him despite being more fed than me and i dished out a lot more harass than he did. It eventually got to the point where pulling me in was suicidal and i could zone him for the most part. Just watch out for fighting him for too long as he can use Noxian Guillitine on you but thats about all i can say.
I do not believe i have faced a Fiora in top lane yet but in theory it should be pretty easy in lane. Our E's are practically the same but mine does damage, i have more mobility, and my Hate Spike matches up with the damage with her Reposte. I feel like Evelynn is a better 1v1 than Fiora is until she turns level 6 in which case her ultimate does more single target damage than mine. Still, i should be zoning her at that point and outharassing her so it shouldnt be a problem. I will try to find a fiora and see how it goes so i can update this.
Gangplank is easy to lane against, unless you get put behind in which case he will out harass you but usually it should be the opposite. Parrrrley can get annoying at time but you can always run up, E + Q + Auto attacks, and W away in which point he cant do much. You remove slows, which is the main CC he has, you are faster than him, you have better early game damage, and both of your ulimates are about as reliable in a 1v1 matchup, but yours has a shield and a larger slow. Make sure you have the right runes and dont fall behind.
Kha'Zix isnt a very good solo top for the most part so as long as you stay close to minions your E will outdamage his Q everytime. The only real problem you could suffer from this matchup is the inability to kill him because he can leap away and go invisible up to 3 times. However, you can still zone him out from CS or if he is dumb enough and leaps towards you for kills you can take advantage of it all. Pretty easy matchup, you shouldnt have a problem in this lane.
Lee Sin is becoming more popular as a solo top and mid. You should almost always win this lane unless he maxes his W, in which case the lane should be a standstill. As long as you dodge his Qs and remove his slow whenever you get caught you should be able to 1v1 him much better. You also have a lot better harass than Lee with your Hate Spike so he shouldnt stand a chance. Ward river in this lane though, he is great at participating in ganks and avoiding them.
I was actually quite suprised with the result when i faced a malphite. For the most part, the lane will just be a farming battle. Your E can shred his shield pretty well and you can 1v1 him until his uses ground slam, in which case you practically cant get 1 auto attack off. Make sure you use your W after he lands his Q on you because he steals that movement speed from you and you wont be able to remove his slow. Build magic resistance early and he cant touch you and you cant touch him. Just farm.
Everybody knows that Nasus is an easy opponant for the most part. He will usually play passive and try to farm his Q but you can harass him whenever he is about to last hit. His AoE ability can do a lot of damage to you and shred most of your armor but Evelynn does more than him. His W is useless on you seeming all it really does is slow you(the reduced attack speed can be annoying). Typically you shouldnt even have to think about this lane. Very simple.
I havent played against Shen yet in season 3 but i do remember doing fine against one before. The lane will be about the same as Malphites. Just farm, dont even try to harass him much, it will be a waste of time. If you can out farm him, just roam and help your team with ganks, this is where Boots of Mobility come into play.
Dont try to fight him for too long, his ultimate heals over all the damage you do and his attack damage is very high. However he is extremely easy to kite(which is how you play)so you can fight him easy. His stun doesnt last too long and his shield will only be the annoying part about him. Harass him with your abilities, but not with your attacks unless it is for a sheen proc. You can also level up your Q to level 3 before maxing your E so you can run around and Q him freely.
Barely makes this list. His first attack on Tiger stance does monster damage but your Ravage does more damage and you will have more attack speed for a short duration. The only other thing Udyr really has in a 1v1 situation is his shield which isnt much. Dark Frenzy gives you more movement speed than bear stance and he doesnt have an ultimate. Your pretty much a better Udyr in a 1v1 situation.
The Vi i was against wasn't very good and didnt know how to play her but you can Ravage and Hate Spike before Vi can get many attacks on you. Her shield isnt much of a problem and she cant make use of her W unless you persist in a fight. His ultimate though counters your Dark Frenzy as she can make up all ground that was lost.
I have not played against a Zed yet but i have played him. I will update this when i get the chance but i dont believe Zed can do much against you pre 6 and your shield counters his ultimate. He cant slow you, he will have trouble harassing you. Bait out his ultimate and you can win exchanges.
I thought that this matchup would be kind of hard because of Jarvans tankiness early and his CC but he isnt a very difficult matchup. Ravage deals more damage than his Q and you attack much faster than him. You rip him apart in early 1v1 skirmishes. You can also use dark frenzy to remove the slow from his W. Unfortunatly his ultimate counters you with the fact you have no gap closer! Save Flash for these situations if you can.
Difficult MatchupsEarly game it isnt even a challenge as you out damage her by a substantial amount but once she hits level 6 shes SCARY. That dash completely ignore your high movement and she can stealth away whenever she is in trouble. Make the most out if early levels and call for a lot of ganks when she turns level 6, she will be highly aggressive. If you aren't getting much help just hug your turret and roam with Boots of Mobility to help other lanes.
Dodge if you can. She is the Leblanc of laning to you. She duals you much better when in spider form because she has more damage, more attack speed, and more sustain. Additionally she can always catch up to you. Her harass with her Q rips you apart and you cant do much about her. Lane switch if possible or make sure your jungler hugs your lane. She is HELL.
She out sustains you and out damages you, simple as that. Her dash easily allows her to catch up to you and she can stun you if you ever get any advantage whatsoever. The slow isnt a problem though and her passive is utterly useless against you. However she is a much better duelist against you. The lane isnt impossible but it definately wont be easy.
Jax is THE direct counter to melee auto attack characters. This is the role your playing. He can dodge all of your auto attacks after you use Ravage and he can leap to you with ease. The stun will allow him to harass you easily and once he turns level 6 there is no chance that you can fight him for more than 2 seconds. Just hope he is aggressive so you can gank him or build AP.
Jayce has been toned down a bit in season 3 but he still is a brutal top for anyone. You cant do much when he is in Cannon form and he can keep you off him with his knock back. He is faster than you with acceleration gate and his passive as well. Just try to get in a farming battle with him and stack Dorans Shields so he cant harass you as well and just wastes mana.
You cannot harass her ever. Let her push your lane so you can farm under turret. The good thing about this matchup is that she cant harass you as well because you remove her slow. If she is aggressive have your jungler or mid gank for you to get her off of your back. Dont expect any kills though because her ultimate is just too much.
He cant slow you so his Undertow isnt very useful but if you try to harass him he will just slam you with true damage. You CAN win this lane if he maxes his Q however. Still, he can sustain you much better and his attack speed is right up with yours. His ultimate doesnt really do much against you besides the fact he can remove the slow from your ultimate but he will probably be invincible to ganks 6 and up.
He is always dominate against anyone in lane as it is the strongest point in the game for him. Dont try to harass him and max out Hate Spike so you can farm. If he dashes at you attempt to run away with Dark Frenzy. Any harass taken will hurt early but wont be too bad the more armor you get. Farm away and help other lanes. I recommend Boots of Mobility in this matchup.
I dont know how she is after the last nerf but i cant imagine her laning being much different. The only real change youll notice is that she wont be able to use her ultimate as frequently which wont make much difference. Shes great at zoning you out and has high mobility which allows her to catch up with you in most situations. Set her up by letting your jungler gank after she blows all of her spells to harass you and it should end up being successful.
A Bully. Just a mean bully. He has always been a rough solo top to deal with concerning the lack of mana and very low cooldowns. He cant slow you, which is nice considering he has 2 but he has good mobility. Still, yours is better but his harass is better at well, and he can do it at better range. With Liandrys he has become super strong and he can melt you once he gets it. Good thing you cant be slowed by him and will take less damage once he gets it right? Well it wont make much difference.
Screw Teemo. Those annoying shrooms that are everywhere so you cant hide, cant roam, and he cant be ganked and his high movement speed that about matches yours. His ranged poison attacks that hurt soo bad early. And his blind making getting that sheen proc impossible! Very annoying champion to deal with. Just farm under turret and roam.
Early game he doesnt hurt much because his cooldowns are so high but you shouldnt even bother harassing seeming he can just heal it back or pool away. You can get a lot of farm however so you can build up some magic resistance quickly before it gets ugly. One hes level 9 he will hit like a truck and wont take any damage from you. Roam when you get to this point, but dont let him push and let your tower fall.
Very strong harass early and more burst than you. You can outrun him however after he dashes to you but it will cost some health. He shouldnt wreck you in lane but youll have to play it very safe. The one one positive thing about this matchup is that you can ult him after he ults and run away, negating any damage taken from it.
Win Nao has sustain and you dont. He has a very quick dash so he can get to you before you hit back and he has a devastating 3 hit combo. You should though out harass him if you can Ravage and run. He is good at consistant fighting but not at short bursts. However he can still heal over it from the minions so you shouldnt waste your time doing this often. Stack health against him because he will probably build a Black Cleaver and he has a lot of armor pen anyway.
You cant harass him because he will heal too much. This lane is similar to Vladimir except he hurts more early and less later. Dont let him freely poke you with his E but also dont try to fight him much. Stay out of range and use Dark Frenzy to remove his slow so he cant get to you. You might be able to fight him once you get a Sheen and bait his ultimate.
Shorter Guide in League of Legends Forumshttp://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2379220&highlight=evelynn+solo+top+guide
One change from the above guide is i almost always max first. Found out i can zone enemies a lot better and duel stronger opponents much better.
