Introduction
Hello! I am Native Rave and I am a S2 and S3 Diamond Elo player on the League of Legends NA server. Even though there are so many Riven guides I noticed that there were no guides for Jungle Riven so I decided to take this opportunity to make one.
You can check out my stream at www.twitch.tv/nativerave

Riven is by far my favorite champion as well as one of my most played ones. She is a very strong champion that can easily snowball games out of control. She is more commonly played top lane but I prefer to play her in the jungle. As a jungler Riven excels at ganking from behind and when done correctly you are almost guaranteed a kill even if the enemy [summoners/flash.png] is up.

I have played around 300 games played as Riven. I don't play ranked that often but about 80% of my ranked games as Riven are from 1800+ elo.

Reasons to Play Jungle Riven
PROS AND CONS

Pros:

  • No cost champion
  • Extremely mobile
  • Both AOE and Single Target Clear
  • 2 Forms of Hard CC (Knock-up, Stun)
  • Easily 1v1 jungler
  • Kills squishies
  • Snowballs hard
  • Bunny :3

Cons:

  • Needs good start Early Game
  • Can Easily get CC'ed to death
  • Farm Dependent
  • Squishy

When to pick Jungle Riven:

  • Your team has a hard initate Ex: [champ/leona.png] [champ/malphite.png]
  • Your team has someone to soak up damage. Ex: [champ/renekton.png]
  • At least 1 of your 3 lanes have some form of hard CC during laning phase Ex: [champ/taric.png] [champ/morgana.png]
  • Your team does not need someone tanky or a peeler
  • The enemy team is fairly squishy.

If any of the above conditions are met feel free to play jungle Riven.
Masteries

I use this 21/9 mastery page to maximize damage and clear time.
Offense Tree:
Butcher: Bonus damage to monsters. Helps with initial clear in the early levels.
Sorcery: CDR is more beneficial to riven than attack speed. Gets your skills up faster.
Alacrity: One point as a filler since no other points are very good.
Deadliness: Bonus AD per level.
Weapon Expertise: Armor penetration is very important since you are purely physical damage.
Havoc: Bonus damage. Helps with executions.
Brute Force: Gives AD.
Sunder: More armor penetration.
Executioner: Helps you execute low hp targets.

Defense Tree:
Summoners Resolve: Bonus gold for smite.
Hardiness: Gives you armor to take less damage from neutral creeps and during ganks.
Durability: Gives you health over time. Better than perseverance.
Veteran Scars: Bonus starting health.
Rune Page 1 (EARLY GAME PAGE)

Flat AD Marks x9: Riven has very good AOE and Single Target clear, as well as 5 abilities that scale of BONUS AD, giving you a faster and safer clear.

Flat Armor Seals x9: As a Jungler you need Flat Armor to take less damage from jungle monsters.

MR/Lvl Glyphs x9: Help you scale against magic damage later in the game. Can also run flat MR Glyphs against double AP.

Flat AD Quints x3: Because Riven is very mobile she does not need MS Quints, making Flat AD Quints the best choice for clearing the jungle.

Use This Page If You Need To Be Strong Early

Rune Page 2 (MID-LATE GAME PAGE)

Armor Pen Marks x6: Helps you do more damage in ganks, though you do lose a bit of damage on your skills.

Flat AD Marks x3: Flat AD to add more damage to your autos and skills.

Flat Armor Seals x9: As a Jungler you need Flat Armor to take less damage from jungle monsters.

Mr/Lvl Glyphs x9 Help you scale against magic damage later in the game. Can also run flat MR Glyphs against double AP.

Flat AD Quints x3: Because Riven is very mobile she does not need MS Quints, making Flat AD Quints the best choice for clearing the jungle.

Summoner Spells
[summoners/flash.png][summoners/smite.png]

Explanation:

As a jungler you must always carry [summoners/smite.png] for Objectives such as Baron, Dragon, Buffs.

You can also run [summoners/exhaust.png] instead of [summoners/flash.png], but [summoners/flash.png] is a safer spell and you can do some pretty fun and unexpected initiations with it.
Skills
[skills/riven/p.png] Passive: Runic Blade

Riven's abilities charge her blade, causing her basic attacks to deal 5 / 5.59 / 6.18 / 6.76 / 7.35 / 7.94 / 8.53 / 9.12 / 9.7 / 10.29 / 10.88 / 11.47 / 12.06 / 12.64 / 13.23 / 13.82 / 14.41 / 15 (+100% of bonus attack damage) bonus physical damage. Riven's blade may be charged up to 3 times and expends one charge per attack.

Explanation:

Pretty straight forward. Very useful to help you clear the jungle quickly as well as provide extra damage for your ganks. You must abuse this passive as much as you can. Later in this guide I will show you how to utilize this with [skills/riven/q.png]
to help you clear the jungle quicker on your first run.

[skills/riven/q.png] Q: Broken Wings

Riven strikes out in front of her in a short line. This ability may be reactivated 2 additional times.

1st Use: Slashes forward, dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+60% of bonus attack damage) physical damage to all units she comes in contact with.
2nd Use: Slashes forward, dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+60% of bonus attack damage) physical damage to all units she comes in contact with.
3rd Use: Leaps into the air and slams the ground dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+60% of bonus attack damage) physical damage and knocking nearby enemies away from the point of impact.

Cooldown 13 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

A very fun spell that can be casted 3 times. It is a great gap closer and it helps you get around the jungle. The cooldown of the spell also starts after first cast making it available more often than you'd think. Later I will show you how to use the cooldown and [skills/riven/p.png] to your advantage for your first jungle clear. Max this out either second or last.

[skills/riven/w.png] W: Ki Burst

Riven's sword emits a burst of runic energy that shocks nearby enemies, dealing 50/90/130/170/210 (+100% of bonus attack damage) physical damage and stunning them for 0.5 seconds.

Cooldown 11/10/9/8/7 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

A very strong AOE stun. Helps clear camps very fast and when timed correctly can help you take a lot less damage in the jungle. When ganking, make sure to use this when they are in range of it. Landing this is what determines if your gank will be successful or not. Max this out first for the CDR.

[skills/riven/e.png] E: Valor

Riven does a quick dash in the direction of your cursor and becomes shielded, blocking up to 40/70/100/130/160 (+100% of bonus attack damage) incoming damage for 2.5 seconds.

Cooldown 11/10/9/8/7 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

This skill is very useful. Not only does it provide a gap close/escape it also provides you with a shield making you deceptively tanky. This helps you take very little damage in the jungle as well as make your ganks easier. You max this out second or last depending if you need the extra cooldown and durability.

[skills/riven/r.png] R: Blade of the Exile

Riven's weapon surges with spiritual energy for 15 seconds, granting her 20% bonus attack damage, increased range on her damaging spells and attacks, and the ability to use Wind Slash once.

Wind Slash: Riven fires a shockwave that deals from 80/120/160 (+60% of bonus attack damage) to 240/360/480 (+180% of bonus attack damage) physical damage to all enemies hit, increasing based on how much health they are missing.

Cooldown 75/60/45 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

An amazing ult that goes great with Riven's kit. The AD steroid and range buff makes all your other skills stronger and easier to land. On top of that, you get a very strong finishing move to the end of your combo. This skill is what makes you able to assassinate squishy targets very easily. Activate this right before going in to gank to greatly raise your damage output. Level it when you can.

Skill Order
[http://i.imgur.com/5mFET88.png]

[skills/riven/r.png] > [skills/riven/w.png] > [skills/riven/e.png] > [skills/riven/q.png]

Always take your first point in [skills/riven/q.png]

When you get a smiteless leash level up [skills/riven/w.png] second to kill the second buff camp faster.

When you have to smite your first buff camp level up [skills/riven/e.png] for more sustain in the jungle. Clearing faster with [skills/riven/w.png] isn't as useful because you will be taking more damage and you will still be waiting for your [summoners/smite.png] to come off cooldown.

If your team is in need of more damage you can also max out [skills/riven/q.png] before [skills/riven/e.png].

WHY YOU MAX OUT [skills/riven/w.png] INSTEAD OF [skills/riven/q.png]

I've been getting asked why I max out W over Q? For utility and damage. It's the same exact reason why [champ/maokai.png] maxes out his Q over his E.
Burst Damage and Utility on a shorter CD >>> Potentially more damage in almost every situation.
Some of these situations include:
  • Ganking
  • Dragon fights
  • Counterganking
  • Small fights
  • Team fights
  • Chasing
  • Escaping
  • Peeling
  • Baron fights

In all these situations CD can make or break the fight. AN EXTRA 4 SECONDS IS A VERY VERY VERY LONG TIME TO WAIT DURING A FIGHT.
Item Builds
Starting Items

[items/hunters-machete.png]: Useful for your first clear. The 10 damage per auto and 10% increased damage will help you clear quickly. Almost every if not every jungler should start with a machete. Turn into [items/madreds-razors.png] on your first back to help with your clear time.

[items/health-potion5.png]: Help you sustain in jungle.

Early Game Items/First Back

[items/spirit-stone.png]: Helps with clearing jungle. Boosts your AOE clear.

[items/boots-of-speed.png]: Boots are good to get at your first back to help you keep up in chasing and make ganking easier. Get them if you cannot get a straight up brutalizer or if you're having a hard time getting successful ganks off.
If You Can Afford:

[items/health-potion.png]: 1-3 will do. Just to help you sustain in jungle and heal up from ganks.

[items/sight-ward.png]: Ward somewhere for your top lane or mid lane.

Core Items

[items/boots-of-speed.png]: You're going to need to be able to move around, so boots will help you accomplish that. Though you do not need tier 2 boots until you get some sort of damage item. Afterwards feel free to upgrade to [items/mercurys-treads.png] or [items/ninja-tabi.png] or even [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png].

[items/spirit-stone.png]: Great for clearing jungle. A must for riven. Can turn this into [items/spirit-of-the-elder-lizard.png] or [items/spirit-of-the-ancient-golem.png]

[items/vampiric-scepter.png]: Gives you damage and lifesteal. Turn this into [items/the-bloodthirster.png] or [items/ravenous-hydra.png] depending on your situation.

Note:There is no perfect item build that will be perfect for every situation. It is up to you to determine what you need to build in the current situation that you are in. However I highly recommend getting one defensive item when teamfighting begins.

Vampiric Scepter Upgrades

[items/the-bloodthirster.png]: Your main go to damage item. Offers a lot of damage and lifesteal. Very good if you need a large increase in damage.

[items/ravenous-hydra.png]: Good splash damage, can use mid Q. Good for pushing and clearing waves.

More Damage Items

[items/spirit-of-the-elder-lizard.png]: Early damage item. Helps you with clear time. CDR and true damage as well.

[items/the-black-cleaver.png]: Strong item. Built from [items/the-brutalizer.png]. Gives you health, Armor Pen, CDR, and an Armor shredding passive. Increases your survivability and damage output. Every single one your damage skills including proc it's passive.

[items/last-whisper.png]: Get this to deal a lot more damage with more Armor Pen. Scales very well with Riven.

Defensive Items

[items/spirit-of-the-ancient-golem.png]: Spirit Stone upgrade. Gives tenacity, health and CDR. Very useful.

[items/hexdrinker.png]: Get this if you need MR. It gives good MR, some AD, and a nice shield.

[items/randuins-omen.png]: If you need Armor. You can easily stick and kill the enemy AD carry with this item.

[items/guardian-angel.png]: If the enemy team has extremely high burst potential, but not that much DPS.

[items/locket-of-the-iron-solari.png]: Locket useful for supporting your team. The shield helps with tower diving, etc. Also gives CDR which is always great.

More Items

[items/vision-ward.png]: Get these and place them on high priority objectives such as Dragon and Baron.

[items/sight-ward.png]: Try to always get 1 when you can.

[items/oracles-elixir.png]: If you're going for a major objective such as Baron or for a tower siege you may get this. Frankly it's better for your support rather than you to get this, but if no one else is getting one you should get one.

[items/elixir-of-fortitude.png]: Get this before major objectives such as Dragon or Baron if you can spare the gold for it because it's always good to have a nice stat boost before fighting. Also get this during late game when you can't afford anything else when you go home.

Items NOT To Get

[items/wriggles-lantern.png]: You do not need this. You do not need the armor. You do not need the sustain. You do not need the active. You need to work on your main damage item asap and this will only slow you down. There are just much better alternatives you can buy with 900g.

[items/frozen-mallet.png]: You should never get this item. Riven is extremely mobile and does not need another slow to catch her enemies. Your job is to kill the enemy squishies as fast as possible. This item will lower your damage output and there are much better choices if you need to become tankier.
Jungle Paths

Standard Level 4 Route

Blue -> Wolves -> Wraiths -> Red -> Golems -> Level 4 Gank
If you plan on ganking the sidelane in which your red is at gank that lane right after red. If not finish golems for level 4

Step By Step Level 4 Route

ignore items and timestamps

Blue:
Start your [skills/riven/q.png] a little after 1:46. Try to wait as long as possible before using your [skills/riven/q.png] again and again. When Blue spawns you should have 3 stacks of [skills/riven/p.png] and your [skills/riven/q.png] will be up shortly. Make sure you auto attack in between casts of your [skills/riven/q.png]. This way you will fully maximize the usage of your [skills/riven/p.png].

Wolves:
After getting blue buff, level up [skills/riven/w.png] and clear wolves.

Wraiths:
Start your [skills/riven/q.png] at this spot and again wait as long as you can between each cast until your final cast is in range of wraiths. After landing your [skills/riven/q.png] auto attack and then cast your [skills/riven/e.png] to prevent damage. Continue to clear using your [skills/riven/q.png] and [skills/riven/e.png]

Red:
Start your [skills/riven/q.png] here and you know the drill. After landing your [skills/riven/q.png], auto attack, [skills/riven/e.png], auto attack, when your shield dies use [skills/riven/w.png]. Use [skills/riven/q.png] when it comes off CD coupled with more Auto Attacks. Use [summoners/smite.png]

Golems: Clear golems and you should hit level 4. Gank.

Smiteless Blue Start

Blue - > Red - > Gank

Red Start Level 2 Gank

Red (smite) -> Gank -> Wraiths (If passing by) -> Wolves/Blue
Riven Wall Jumps
Due to the most recent patch (Patch 3.8), Riven has gained the ability to jump over some walls with the last cast of her [skills/riven/q.png].

Note: The jumps in this video can also be recreated on purple side as well. These are only some of many jumps that Riven can now perform. It takes a lot of practice, but after a while it will become easier.
Early/Mid Game
During the Early/Mid game, you want to be farming your wraiths and wolves as they spawn because you need to get as much gold as you can to start building towards your [items/the-bloodthirster.png]. Ask your Mid Laner to NOT take your wraiths or wolves early game because you need the farm, ESPECIALLY if you did not get an advantage early. You are not a gp10 Jungler so you need the camps to stay on par. When those camps are gone, look for ganking and counterganking opportunities. During Early game, you're going to want to try to take the kill if possible because you can really put that gold into use. If there are none, you can look to counterjungling their wraiths. Just make sure you are constantly looking for chances to get gold or help your team. Do not wander around with no objective in mind.

As Mid Game (~Level 10ish) progresses, you will experience a decrease in damage output until you are able to afford a [items/bf-sword.png]. While you will still be strong enough to kill most enemies with successful ganks, you will have a bit more trouble killing enemies on your own until you can get some more damage.

Make sure to get Dragon when you can.

Good times to get dragon:
  • Enemy mid is low, oom, dead, or had to recall
  • Enemy AD Carry/Support or both are low, dead, or had to recall
  • Enemy Jungle is in Top Lane
  • Your top lane is down for Dragon while the enemy top lane is still in top
  • Dragon is not warded and your team is stronger than the enemy team
Of course it's always better if your [summoners/smite.png] is up.

The most efficient way to clear jungle camps is [skills/riven/e.png] -> auto -> [skills/riven/q.png] -> auto ->[skills/riven/q.png] -> [skills/riven/q.png] -> auto -> [skills/riven/w.png]

After your last [skills/riven/q.png] you should be able to get your auto and [skills/riven/w.png] while they are still in the air or about to land.
Ganking/Counterganking
Ganking

Ganking with Riven is very easy. These are the 2 easiest ways to pull them off successfully.

Quick notes about Riven Q
  • When using [skills/riven/q.png], DO NOT put your cursor directly on your target, but instead put your cursor in the direction your target is running. When you put your cursor on your target Riven will not jump past it but just stick onto them. If you put your cursor in their direction, Riven will jump past them rather than getting stuck in front of them, making it a lot more efficient gap closer and a lot easier to knock them back instead of forward.
  • Riven's last [skills/riven/q.png] works like [champ/maokai.png] Q so try to land your last [skills/riven/q.png] behind the enemy to knock them forwards.

1. Lane Initiates

When your lane is initiating the gank, use [skills/riven/e.png][skills/riven/w.png] after your lane CC. Afterwards use [skills/riven/q.png] to cut them off.

A VERY simple gank in top lane. In this video I wait in the river brush behind the overextended [champ/singed.png] and wait for my [champ/jarvaniv.png] to initiate. Immediately fterwards I use the [skills/riven/e.png] [skills/riven/w.png] combo to stun him in place and then cut off his escape with [skills/riven/q.png], giving [champ/jarvaniv.png] the kill.

2. You Initiate

When heading to the lane you want to gank, you're going to want to start your first 2 [skills/riven/q.png] while walking heading to the lane and then use your [skills/riven/e.png] and/or [summoners/flash.png] if you need to, and then land the final [skills/riven/q.png] behind them. After that use [skills/riven/w.png] to stun them and by this time your lane would have used their CC to lock them up even longer. Use skills on CD to chase. If you are in range to [skills/riven/w.png] after using your gap closers, stun first before using your last cast of [skills/riven/q.png] so you can have an easier time positioning yourself to knock them backwards.

In this video I start my [skills/riven/q.png] ahead of time, and then [skills/riven/e.png] and [summoners/flash.png] onto the enemy lane and stun them with my [skills/riven/w.png]. [champ/alistar.png] follows up with his CC, and we chase them down for a double kill.

3. Lane Gank

Have your lane push up so that you can enter lane brush. Pink wards also help to make sure that the brush isn't warded. Afterwards just wait for the enemy to get in range of the brush or for your lane to initiate.

Counterganking

Riven is a very strong counter ganker. If you see the enemy jungler in a lane you can hide out in a brush or out of vision and wait for the initiate and completely turn the gank around in your favor.

In this video, [champ/chogath.png] starts heading to mid lane for a gank. I wait on the side for the enemy to initiate and as soon as the gank starts I pop [skills/riven/r.png] then [summoners/flash.png] and [skills/riven/e.png] to close the gap, cancel [champ/katarina.png] ulti with [skills/riven/w.png] and kill her with [skills/riven/r.png].
Late Game/Team Fight
When you hit that late game point where enemy teams are starting to group, you as Riven should be focusing in catching people out in brushes whether you are with your team or by yourself and burst them from full to none using your full [skills/riven/r.png][skills/riven/w.png][skills/riven/q.png] combo.

Team Fights

In team fights your job is to follow up on the initiate, killing the enemy carries if possible. You usually do not want to initiate because you can easily get CC'ed and killed. After the main initiation your job is to clean up the stragglers or kill the enemies who are sticking onto your carries, whichever is more important.

In this video, I immediately follow up after [champ/malphite.png] ult, stunning [champ/katarina.png] and [champ/taric.png] in place for a bit longer giving my team and easier time to clean up the fight.
Final Comments
Riven is an extremely fun champion regardless if you play her top lane or in the jungle. Thank you for reading this guide and I hope it inspired some of you to try Riven in the jungle. Feel free to leave some feedback and questions I'll try my best to answer you.

Hello. With the recent change of Elder Lizard, it has become extremely cost efficient for the stats it offers. Yes madreds does help clear faster in the first few levels, level 7 or so. But after that it becomes a complete item sink, and useless as the game goes on. The spirit stone scales with your damage and it the bonus damage you get on monsters stays relevant throughout the game. Plus because of the Elder Lizard cost change, it is also very efficient to buy on Riven now than before.
Basically, Madreds has a big clear boost early, but becomes completely useless later on.
Spirit Stone gives a small clear boost at first, but outscales madreds severely as the game goes on.

Native Rave, can you please explain to me why you prefer Spirit Stone over Madreds? I've noticed a recent trend in Rivens (even top lane Rivens) getting Spirit of the Elder Lizard, which I don't really understand. There is no stacking effect on the passive as far as I know, and Riven gets in a lot of attacks in within a short time being a somewhat burst champion, therefore adding very little damage as it will only proc the passive once or twice. The mana regen is also wasted on Riven. Madreds on the other hand can be completely utilized by Riven. You also mentioned in your earlier comments that Madreds clears much faster than Spirit Stone does. It seems to me that Madreds would almost always be the better choice between Madreds and Spirit Stone, so I wanna know what I'm not understanding about Spirit Stone and even Spirit of the Elder Lizard.

@Vaiztanz No I haven't, but that doesn't sound bad at all. I haven't done much jungle riven, or pretty much jungling as a whole in the recent patches. I think the new spirit golem would work just fine, after a damage item at least. I'll give it a try.

have you considered upgrading your spirit stone into spirit of the ancient golem instead of elder lizard ? the hp cdr + tenacity is pretty nice and makes room for ionian boots even if they have alot of cc

You're right. I forgot to change it because of the whole spirit stone to madreds transition.

Why do you take 4/4 Fury? I think 2/2 Butcher and 3/3 Havoc are more beneficial to Riven.

@corruptblader Riven is already very mobile so she doesn't need them. You're better off with AD quints for damage.

What do you think about movement speed runes?

@Interceptor You are correct with the spirit stone. From my experience at least, madreds and a spirit stone both clear well, with like I said madreds actually clearing faster in the early levels and spirit stone clearing much faster in the later levels. But since she has a harder time clearing the jungle early, I prefer Madreds. I do believe both are very viable.

Also, SoTEL, though having nice numbers on paper, is not as good as you think it would be. Because you are more of a burst caster than a sustained damage dealer like Hecarim, you usually only proc maybe 4 seconds of its passive at the most before the target dies. IMO it is very underwhelming compared to alternative items for damage such BT, Black Cleaver, Last Whisperer. It looks nice and dandy on paper, but you need to keep in mind how much gold you actually have available to spend and what other items you will need to be sacrificing for the item. For 1587g, you can buy a Brutalizer and a Red Pot, giving you 40 AD, 10% CDR, and 10 Armor pen and some health.

As for being a waste, Spirit Stone and Madreds offer pretty much the same amount of sustain, they both don't build into anything great, neither help with ganks, but they neither slows down your damage to champions because the faster you clear, the more gold you get, the more items you can buy.

So all in all, Spirit Stone is a Yes, SoTEL is a no.

Sure, but it's not really 75 damage per attack, it's a 25% chance of 300. This means that with four autoattacks, you'll fail to proc the passive 31% of the time, or ~24% with five autos. You'll also proc the passive on last hits that would have killed anyway, making it irrelevant.

Additionally, the bonus skill damage from Machete does also apply to the big creep. At level 4, for example, you're missing out on +30 base damage from a full QQQE, and ~10 damage per Runic bladed autoattack. Those figures are both doubled with the Spirit Stone, which has the same cost as Madred's. Also, once you have the Stone, 1600g further (cost of a B.F.) gets you +50 AD, 10% CDR, a slight upgrade to Butcher, and the true damage Incinerate passive. Not to mention an 875g intermediate build item for +25 AD.

Madred's feels like a waste. It doesn't help ganks, it has no sustain, you don't build it into anything, and it slows down your damage to champions.
