ITEM BUILD>
Starting items: boots-of-speedhealth-potion4 (wait in the base after minions spawn for 4th potion)

This is the best option if you are not going to kill anyone early (unless you are against magic damage): dorans-shielddorans-shielddorans-shield

Main build: ninja-tabi OR mercurys-treads OR ionian-boots-of-lucidity + frozen-heartranduins-omenzekes-herald + maw-of-malmortius OR force-of-nature

Exceptional utility, survivability and damage. Olaf benefits massively from cooldown reduction to deal damage. Have Frozen Heart or Zeke's Herald built before team fights start.

Never build health just because of Olaf's W. You get 1 damage for every 100 health. There is enough health in my main build (350 from Randuin's, 400 shield from Maw and 250 from Zeke's).

wriggles-lantern Can be bought if you are having trouble in lane.

vampiric-scepter Is also good to get on its own in lane.

phage Is good to get first if you are having trouble chasing and you can kill them.

ITEM EXPLANATIONS:

youmuus-ghostblade Good for carrying solo queue. Shurelia's replaces this in organized play.

the-bloodthirster Get crit to multiply the lifesteal of this. Good vs tanks.

trinity-force Have good cooldown reduction before you buy this.

frozen-mallet Only buy it if your team ABSOLUTELY NEEDS CC. Rarely buy this.

banshees-veil Get this instead of Frozen Heart if the other team has lots of magic damage.

phantom-dancer If you are tanky enough and you have a Bloodthirster.

infinity-edge If your team lacks damage.

aegis-of-the-legion Snowball with this when you are ahead. You should get it before Maw sometimes.

spirit-visage Good early. Sell later.

zekes-herald Build this every game and make sure you stand near your ranged AD in team fights unless you can dive the other one and yours is safe/useless.

maw-of-malmortius If you want to kill people early. Sell this for Force of Nature late game.

force-of-nature If you want to survive longer in team fights. Good with auras.

last-whisper If you have a lot of AD items and the squishies have more than 110 armor.

sunfire-cape Great early game damage. Sell late game.

guardian-angel I haven't tried it but it's probably really good especially with DPS items.

DO NOT BUY:

Olaf has AD ratios and crits.
ionic-sparkmadreds-bloodrazorwits-end

No utility, expensive, no resistances to multiply health, Atma's got overnerfed. I am still testing Warmog's so it's a maybe.

Introduction
IF ANYONE WANTS TO REMOVE THIS GUIDE, JUST MAKE IT INVISIBLE TO THE PUBLIC

I am Arcanist and thank you for looking at my guide. I wrote this guide because I can't find any Olaf guides that I agree with and I want to improve my build with people's advice.

Olaf is good at taking damage and dealing damage. He does this with cooldown reduction, attack stats, defensive stats and utility. My build does all of these well.

Before you start theory crafting about items, look at Olaf's most popular items and their win rates. This is from 10th November 2012 and is on LoLking.com. I might be wrong about some items in my guide. The unfinished items have lower win rates because it is harder to finish items when you are losing because you have less gold. I still think Frozen Mallet and Atma's suck.
Masteries
[http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg587/Acranist1/olafmasteries.jpg]
The only changes you can make to this is removing magic resistance, 1 point in armor or movement speed to put points in health regen. Only do this if you are going to have a hard lane.

JUSTIFICATIONS

9 in offence
All of these points are used well. Olaf does lots of physical damage.

Tough Skin
You will be taking many hits from minions if you harass. It is also good for freezing lane which is tanking minions so the tower doesn't kill them. Tough Skin is always better than Vigor (health regen).

Durability and Veteran's Scars
This is better than Vigor is because health regen is useless when you get ganked and health is always useful.

Indomitable
The best mastery in the game. An other mastery that is good at mitigating minion damage. It is also better than both of the % damage reduction masteries.

Initiator
The title says all. This is good for running up to that carry. You can get Vigor instead of this if you will have trouble in lane.

Enlightenment
One of the main reasons to use this tree is for the cooldown reduction. Of course, this mastery will be useless late game but LoL is about snowballing.

Juggernaut
Why not? We are at the end of the tree and it's pretty good.
OTHER RUNE OPTIONS

Marks: AD, armor

Seals: Armor per level (makes minions hit you harder too), extra health percentage is fun in normal games

Glyphs: Flat magic resistance, armor, cooldown reduction, cooldown reduction per level

Quints: Health regen, armor, armor pen, extra health percentage (for normal games)
Laning Phase
Your Q is diverse making it take time to master. It clears waves fast. You can get first blood from level 1 if you auto attack and keep refreshing undertow. If they try to fight you, you always have your passive to win the fight.

If your opponent makes it hard to E them, or you want to save mana, use Q only if you are going to use E on them.

Never let your mana or health become full. If you are at full health or mana, do something useful that will make your health and mana regen useful.

Only buy gold per 10 items if it is a farm lane. When you are winning, press your advantage by buying strong items and when you are losing, you can't afford to risk buying gold per 10 items because stronger items will help you die less. In a farm lane, both top laners will not be dying.
Mid game roaming
It is best to destroy top tower at around 15 minutes and roam. You have to help your team if you want to carry. If your ghost is up, you can do a lane gank at bottom. Ward the enemy jungle around dragon, kill someone and then take dragon with your team. You can turret dive bottom with an early chain vest.

There are a lot of decisions to make in the mid game and you will get better at it with experience. Whatever you do, don't go top too much. You can afford to push top and then roam bottom when you are ahead.
Team Fights
This is where mastering the use of your Q is most important. One missed Q and you can lose the kill. You can rush the AD carry or peel for yours if they are useful.

If you made a mistake in your build, here is where you will notice it most. Having not enough damage or cooldown reduction will not allow you to kill the AD carry so don't build too many tank items. The same also goes for too many damage items making you squishy.

Sometimes, when you have a fed AD carry, it is better to protect them instead of rushing the enemy AD. This is called peeling where you use everything you have to get someone off your AD. This can be better than rushing the enemy AD because your AD will be doing more damage than you if you are protecting them. Shielding your AD will let them kill everyone easier. There is no point in rushing the enemy AD carry when your one is ahead of them.
Matchups
This section is constantly updating and will never be finished

[champ/darius.png]
Darius - Challenging - 6
Armor seals, flat MR seals, armor/health regen quints. He can snowball you with 1 kill.

[champ/irelia.png]
Irelia - Easy/challenging - 5
She wins early so get a few [items/dorans-shield.png] because it counters everything she does. [items/zekes-herald.png] makes you unkillable.

[champ/fiora.png]
Fiora - Easy - 3
Armor quints [items/dorans-shield.png] if you are having trouble.

[champ/gangplank.png]
Gangplank - Easy - 3
Armor quints. [items/dorans-shield.png] if you are having trouble. You can kill him at level one if you refresh [skills/olaf/q.png] while chasing him.

[champ/garen.png]
Garen - Easy - 3
The more trouble you have, the more armor you will build. Start [items/cloth-armor.png][items/health-potion5.png]

[champ/jarvaniv.png]
Jarvan IV - Easy - 4
The more trouble you have, the more armor you will build. He has good damage early so dodge his skill shots and knock up combo. He can snowball if he kills you.

[champ/jax.png]
Jax - Easy/challenging - 5
He is easy before 6 and gets a bit harder after that. If he kills you after 6, he can snowball you. Punish him early by freezing the lane and chasing him while refreshing axes. [items/phage.png] is good in this match up.

[champ/jayce.png]
Jayce - Hard - 7
I don't know what runes to get he's a good champ man. If you don't kill him early, your farm will have to be good so he doesn't kill you after he gets some levels.

[champ/kayle.png]
Kayle - Hard - 7
Flat MR glyphs and armor quints. She harasses a lot. Last hit with [skills/olaf/q.png] Get ganks.

[champ/kennen.png]
Kennen - Challenging - 6
You will need armor and MR. You won't be able to kill him so farm as best you can. It might be a farm lane so if it is, get [items/philosophers-stone.png][items/heart-of-gold.png]

[champ/leesin.png]
Lee Sin - Easy/challenging - 5
Can kill you at the start but once you get some [items/dorans-shield.png] and a [items/zekes-herald.png] he won't be able to do much.

[champ/malphite.png]
Malphite - Hard - 8
You can't sustain against his harass. Stack tons of MR and get [items/zekes-herald.png] If he kills you once, you are done. Get teleport. Get ganks.

[champ/mordekaiser.png]
Mordekaiser - Easy/challenging - 5
Punish him early so he doesn't farm and kill your team. He scales hard.

[champ/nasus.png]
Nasus - Easiest - 1
The easiest champion for Olaf. Freeze the lane, harass and win.

[champ/nidalee.png]
Nidalee - Challenging - 6
I have only played against bad nids. She is probably harder than this.

[champ/nunu.png]
Nunu - Hard - 8
Harasses too much. Get ganks. Stack MR. Get teleport.

[champ/olaf.png] If it's a Brolaf you win. Pentakill Olaf is distracted. The other skins are a skill match up.

[champ/pantheon.png]
Pantheon - Easy - 3
Stack [items/dorans-shield.png] so he has no chance of killing you and get [items/zekes-herald.png] Don't die early. Start [items/cloth-armor.png][items/health-potion5.png]

[champ/poppy.png]
Poppy - Easy - 4
Be aggressive early and freeze the lane. She can snowball if she kills you.

[champ/renekton.png]
Renekton - Easy - 4
He can do good damage early but once you get a few [items/dorans-shield.png] and a [items/zekes-herald.png] he is nothing] Start [items/cloth-armor.png][items/health-potion5.png]

[champ/rengar.png]
Rengar - Challenging - 6
He can harass you almost as much as you can harass him so keep harassing so you are ahead of him. Once you get a few [items/dorans-shield.png] it becomes easier.

[champ/riven.png]
Riven - Challenging - 6
She can keep up with you in harass and takes a while to fall off. If she kills you, leave the game. You have good kill potential on her if her spells are on cooldown. If you are worried about dying early, farm to get [items/dorans-shield.png] and [items/zekes-herald.png] you will win because you scale better.

[champ/rumble.png]
Rumble - Challenging - 6
Flat MR glyphs. MR quints. He snowballs well. Be cautious around him unless you main Rumble and know exactly how much damage you will take. You will only be able to land [skills/olaf/e.png] if you land [skills/olaf/q.png] first.

[champ/shen.png]
Shen - Easy/challenging - 5
You have huge kill potential on him early. Run up to him at level 1 and refresh [skills/olaf/q.png] as many times as you can while chasing him. He will blow summoners or die. If you don't kill him early, his harass will be annoying. His sword throw and passive do magic damage and he might build [items/sunfire-cape.png][items/wits-end.png][items/ionic-spark.png] so he does a lot more magic damage than physical damage. Flat MR glyphs. Flat MR quints.

[champ/singed.png]
Singed - Easy - 4
He doesn't do much damage to you if you get flat MR glyphs and quints. You have kill potential early but don't get too confident. He can snowball.

[champ/teemo.png]
Teemo - Challenging/hard - 7
He has good harass. Farm with [skills/olaf/q.png] You need ganks. He does a lot of magic damage so get MR with your [items/dorans-shield.png] Just survive. You can toe-to-toe him at around level 11. He does a lot of damage early.

[champ/tryndamere.png]
Tryndamere - Easy - 3
Stack armor but make sure you get [items/wardens-mail.png] and [items/frozen-heart.png] early so you can keep beating him because he can 1v1 you after he gets farm.

[champ/vayne.png]
Vayne - Hard - 7
You won't be able to land [skills/olaf/q.png] because of tumble. She is easy to kill if you get ganks. Don't let her farm.

[champ/vladimir.png]
Vladimir - Hard - 7
Killable early but once he gets [items/hextech-revolver.png] you will need help. My most hated match up because Vladimir is annoying and OP.

[champ/warwick.png]
Warwick - Easy/challenging - 5
If he gets one kill you will lose the lane. It is not easy for him to do that. You have good kill potential on him early. MR glyphs and quints. Get lots of MR items.

[champ/wukong.png]
Wukong - Easy - 3
He can be annoying with his clone but starting [items/cloth-armor.png][items/health-potion5.png] with armor quints will make him easy. He can snowball if he kills you.

[champ/xinzhao.png]
Xin Zhao - Easy - 4
Start with [items/cloth-armor.png][items/health-potion5.png] because he has good early damage. Armor quints. He can snowball.

[champ/yorick.png]
Yorick - Challenging/hard - 7
You can kill him at level 1 but not soon after that. After you get sustain with [items/zekes-herald.png] and [items/phage.png] you might be able to kill him. Farm as best you can.

[champ/volibear.png] I don't know

[champ/urgot.png] Challenging/hard

[champ/udyr.png] Challenging

[champ/akali.png] Challenging

[champ/fizz.png] Challenging
Auralaf - a cost effective early game build
Diving into the other team is the opposite of what you want to do with this build. You are going to peel for your AD carry the whole time staying alive for as long as you can to keep the auras going. If your AD carry is useless, don't do this build.

[items/ninja-tabi.png] OR [items/mercurys-treads.png] OR [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] + [items/zekes-herald.png][items/sunfire-cape.png][items/aegis-of-the-legion.png][items/frozen-heart.png][items/force-of-nature.png][items/randuins-omen.png]
Trinity Force might also be good for it's early game presence.

DO NOT BUY
[items/kages-lucky-pick.png][items/philosophers-stone.png][items/heart-of-gold.png][items/avarice-blade.png]
You are doing an early game snowball build. These items hold you back.
3v3 Snowlaf
FOR OLD TT. STILL SOMEWHAT USEFUL

Olaf is a must know champion for your ranked 3s arsenal. With cost efficient items, auras and 3 bruisers, your team can snowball to an early victory.

Start with: [items/boots-of-speed.png][items/health-potion3.png]

You could go back for a 4th potion but I prefer to get a jungle camp in the middle of the map with my team so we get extra gold and experience. The person who tanks the camp should be the one last hitting them so they can go back to buy a ward and health potions.

Then get: [items/dorans-shield.png][items/dorans-shield.png][items/dorans-shield.png] AND [items/wriggles-lantern.png] OR zekes-herald
Get [items/ninja-tabi.png] somewhere in between. If you are going for [items/mercurys-treads.png], get it after [items/hexdrinker.png] because you won't need the tenacity so early.

If you desperately need magic resist, get [items/hexdrinker.png] or [items/maw-of-malmortius.png].

If there is no [items/aegis-of-the-legion.png] on your team, get it now.

[items/guardian-angel.png] Get this next. All of your teammates should get Guardian Angel as a second or third main item.

You will probably want one of these by now [items/randuins-omen.png] [items/banshees-veil.png]

Get situational items. You won't need to build all of these items every game. This guide is to start you off.

Runes: Attack damage marks and quints, flat armor seals and flat magic resistance or armor glyphs. Cooldown reduction glyphs might also work but I haven't tried them.
Never get per lvl runes when you want to snowball. The game can easily be decided before lvl 11 which is when magic resistance per lvl glyphs become better than flat ones.

Masteries are for snowballing too. Everyone needs to get Demolitionist and one person has to get Siege Commander. Tanking the other team while hitting their tower is a legit strategy in 3s.

This is my 3v3 team. We mainly ran [champ/olaf.png][champ/leesin.png][champ/chogath.png]
[champ/rengar.png] is better than [champ/chogath.png] but [champ/rengar.png] was banned most games.

Thank you for reading my guide
Use that comment section! I want to know what you think of my guide. What am I doing wrong? What should I do to improve it?

Do not always use the same build. There is no build that will work in every situation. The best thing you can do is experiment to find out what works in different situations.

This is what made me make an Olaf guide. Those games are at 1300 Elo.

Thanks for the comment. I will experiment more with Warmog's. I think Warmog's is good early but Sunfire Cape is better for snowballing. I wouldn't keep a Warmog's in my final build. We'll see how this Warmog's goes.
  • Blue Hwyaden
Decent guide but, the part where you say don't buy warmogs - warmogs is one of the best items for Olaf; which I felt sad reading.
  • novalax
olaf scales off hp so why not a warmog's armor? It's cheaper than frozen mallet, and if you need a perma slow, red buff is enough. Or if you can't get red buff, then phage + undertow is enough.
  • UnDerStooD
Lol noobs, well since you put it that way I guess it'sa good build. Thumbs up for you ^^
  • Arcanist
I think the resistances and life steal make up for not having as much health. Randuin's is 350 health and Maw is 400 shield. Frozen Heart utility and Randuin's Omen utility mean a lot.

I put FoN in 'do not buy' so noobs don't buy it. It is not useful in noob games where everyone goes all out. It gives no stats that make Olaf do more damage either (AD, CDR, health). It is situational for organised teams.
  • UnDerStooD
Well from my perspective, you should put atmog and FoN as situational since olaf's 3rd skill is mainly from HP.
  • Arcanist
I am not playing AD Olaf. I think that damage is important on him and I have enough tank items. Do you have any suggestions?

    Are you playing AD olaf?
