The PointThe idea of this Jayce build is to allow Jayce to adapt to any situation. The saying that Jayce is "competent at all, master of none" I actually look at as an advantage, this build is meant to allow players to take advantage of Jayce's Transform ability, allowing a player to frequently pull off EQ or QE combos. This is a Jayce who is a jack of all trades so to speak, this build brings decent damage, good defense and a strong focus on using abilities.
Why choose this tree? One of the main ideas of this build is to allow Jayce to take a decent hit, going into the defensive mastery tree allows just that. These masteries also allow Jayce to get CR. Allowing Jayce to use all of the abilities in his arsenal more frequently.
Why CR?CR is perfect for Jayce in my opinion, the more times Jayce can switch his stances the better. With CR on both Runes and Masteries Jayce can transform very often. Allowing the use of both Cannon form and Hammer form combos way more often. And thanks to Jayce's passive he is capable of constantly keeping his mana high enough to where the CR isn't draining your mana. CR also allows Jayce to pop is passive more often, this can help him catch up to someone or in some cases run away as well. Being able to pop acceleration gate down frequently can help Jayce navigate and move around the map very quickly, this gives Jayce a nice control over battles as he is capable of engaging and disengaging whenever he wants. On top of the fact that his E causes knockback Jayce is able to control a battle and chase opponents down or keep his distance from them with relative ease. This build does not focus on Jayce's poke or his close range abilities, it uses both equally. Being able to pop off a combo in hammer stance, switch to pop off cannon stance combo, and then switching again back to hammer stance to pull off another combo can provide massive amounts of damage and stop your opponent from fleeing while at the same time not leaving yourself that vulnerable. The other nice thing about CR is that it allows the player to farm the Manamune very quickly leading to a lot of extra mana and damage.
SO MANY CHOICES
The classic ignite and flash combo, really this build works with a lot of different summoner spells, and ignite is changed to smite when jungling. But if you are a top laner ignite and flash are nice on Jayce so he can flash forward, get a Q off for slow and finish off with an ignite.
Passive: Hextech Capacitor
Jayce gains 40 movement speed for 1.25 seconds and ignores unit collision each time Transform is cast.
Q: To the Skies! / Shock Blast
- To the Skies!
Jayce leaps to an enemy, dealing physical damage to his target and to enemies in the area, slowing them for 2 seconds.
- Shock Blast
Fires an orb of electricity that detonates upon hitting an enemy or reaching the end of its path, dealing physical damage to all enemies in the area of the explosion.
If Shock Blast is fired through an Acceleration Gate, the area of effect, missile speed and range will be increased, and its damage will increase by 40%.
W: Lightning Field / Hyper Charge
- Lightning Field
(Passive): Jayce regenerates mana each time he strikes an enemy while in Hammer Stance.
(Active): Creates an electric aura, dealing magic damage over 4 seconds to nearby enemies.
- Hyper Charge
(Active): Jayce gains a burst of energy, increasing his attack speed to maximum for 3 attacks. These attacks deal varied damage depending on rank.
E: Thundering Blow / Acceleration Gate
- Thundering Blow
Deals magic damage equal to a base amount plus a percentage of the target's maximum health, knocking the target back a short distance. This damage is capped against monsters.
- Acceleration Gate
Deploys an Acceleration Gate for 4 seconds, increasing the movement speed of all allies who pass through it for 3 seconds. This bonus fades over the duration.
R: Transform: Mercury Cannon / Transform: Mercury Hammer
- Transform: Mercury Cannon
Transforms the Mercury Hammer into the Mercury Cannon, gaining new abilities and ranged attacks.
The next attack in Cannon Stance reduces the enemy's armor and magic resist for 5 seconds.
- Transform: Mercury Hammer
Transforms the Mercury Cannon into the Mercury Hammer, gaining new abilities and bonus armor and magic resist.
The next attack in Hammer Stance deals additional magic damage.
The Power Of QEThe reason I choose this build order is so that Jayce is equally effective in both Hammer and Cannon stances. Normally boosting one skill is likely to be the most effective move, the boosting you get from the CR allows Jayce to use QE combos significantly more often. And being able to switch stances allows Jayce to pull off a hammer combo, switch and pull off a cannon combo, and then switch back to pull off yet another hammer combo.
For the micro intenseIn case you haven't noticed by now this build is not easy, it requires a lot of stance switching, constant poking and farming tear of the goddess. I recommend that if you haven't played Jayce before try starting with a simpler build. Once you have gotten really good with Jayce I recommend this build for any top laner of jungler. I know Jungle Jayce isn't a big thing in the world of LoL but this is the closest I've come to finding something that works. The problem that Jayce has as a jungler is that while he has decent CC and damage output he lacks speed and can have trouble killing minions in the jungle. This build fixes that, having tear of the goddess stacked with cooldown reduction gives Jayce an ample supply of mana that he can use on minions in the jungle without the need for blue buff. And having the CDR and mana allows Jayce to Acceleration Gate his way across the map to get to where he needs to go. And for top lane this build is hard to beat if it doesn't get shutdown. The mana and CDR allows Jayce to pull off long distance pokes with cannon form EQ combos all the time. There is a weakness to this build though and that is early game. Without the tear of the goddess Jayce runs out of mana very quickly, especially quickly when you use abilities constantly. The best way to deal with this is to stick to cannon form and use basic attacks in top lane till you can get the tear of the goddess. In jungle, I find leveling W to 2 early on makes Jayce very mana conservative and in addition makes it easier to kill minions in the jungle.
Final CommentsThis build is obviously a bit from the norm but I find it to be wildly effective. The point of the build is to use Jayce's Transform ability a lot, this is not an easy build to get used to as it requires a lot of stance changing and ability using but as you get used to it you'll find the amount of combos you can continually pull off allow you to decimate opponents and at the same time allow you to take a decent hit. This build requires a lot of stance switching and mobility, so as such this is not an easy build to use. Someone who can master this build can (at least in my opinion) become an effective bruiser or jungler and jack of all trades in most games.
