IntroductionOn one faithful ranked game, I was completely dominated by Scarra's AP Nidalee (I was on the phone dammit). After he mocked the true cat by saying 'LOL BISCHU U NEED A NID GUIDE?', I decided to master the art of Midalee and the outcome was... quite the thing.
Unlike my other AP Nidalee build, which forced us to build Nidalee somewhat tanky to match other tanky bruisers of top lane, we go full AP damage for Midalee. Midalee is also the only build that I will be maxing over the all-mighty . BUT BISCHU, THE 'S PROJECTILE SPEED IS SLOW, IS A SKILLSHOT AND IT DOESN'T GO THROUGH MINIONS! YOU ARE BEING SILLY BISCHU.' Well the reason why we max the javelins is because it can change how the lane flows with a single shot. Still, it's one of those builds where you want to be passive until you get which provides mobility to escape/chase, tankiness, and a follow up of skills to execute your enemy. Later on into the game, we can actually one shot the squishier champions if doing well and can 1v5 a baron attempt. IT'S PRETTY COOL.
Currently, Nidalee is more favored by players who play her as a AD bruiser top lane and I, too was one previously. In fact, I didn't even consider her to be a viable mid lane champion until Scarra destroyed me one game. Ever since, I've been exclusively playing the Midalee. Anyway, I'm here today to teach you guys how viable she is and her strengths as a mid laner. As usual, let's look at some pros and cons.
- Very fun to play
- Insane poke
- Roaming capabilities
- Easy escapes
- Great farming capabilities
- Ridiculous burst
- Half her spells don't cost mana
- Broad set of utilities
- Incredibly hard to play properly
- MANA GUZZLER/reliant on blue
- Requires a lot of experience with Nidalee
- Unreliable source of damage
- No presence in lane until level 6
- No escapes until level 6
- Relatively low base stats
Here's some AP Nidalee video to make you guys incredibly interested in AP Nidalee
The reason for the confusing item guide is because AP Nidalee builds are INCREDIBLY flexible. There are several different ways to build her for several different occasions, I'll teach you how to use them effectively on this guide.
But why play AP Nidalee when you can play AD Nidalee is a question that pops up often and I find this funny because Nidalee is designed to be an AP Carry and AD Nidalee didn't even become popular until beginning of the year! Anyways, AP Nidalee and AD Nidalee have different roles. AD Nidalee, you want to stay on the enemy's AD or AP Carry while tanking damage whereas with AP Nidalee you don't want to be ANYWHERE NEAR the enemy team and just poke them down while roaming. Oh and she's a LOT more fun when you play her AP in my opinion. Just something about nuking them down to 1/4 of their health from out of their sight I guess!
Another little misconception of Nidalee Mid is that people think her cougar form is rather useless. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. In fact, pretty much 70% of your damage comes from the cougar form mid game!
So I'm just going to say this. I really don't recommend playing Nidalee as a mid unless you already have experience with Nidalee.
About me, BischuHey guys, most know me as Bischu but I currently go by Hitchu since I wanted to get a name change so I could take my clan tag off but turns out that someone else took Bischu while I had my name changed. Anyways, I'm a 2600 elo player who mainly plays AP mid champs and is most known for my Nidalee and Katarina.
I've already made a popular Nidalee guide for pretty much everything about Nidalee, but I wanted to make a seperate guide for Midalee since editting my last guide is a nightmare.

Changelog4:16 AM October 4th 2012
I MADE THE GUIDE. STOP BUGGING ME NOW.
Standard AP Carry masteries. I take 3 points in the Mana regen since you will be able to last longer in lane. Rest are pretty standard AP masteries.
This mastery page is when I know for sure that I'm going to go
If you know for sure that you're going to be stacking and your team in general have a bad early game and enemy team has a better early game than you do. Also if you think you're going to get destroyed in lane.
Since Nidalee's AP ratio/scale is ridiculous, we're going to make the most out of it.
I use this when I know the opponent is running Flat MR Glyphs and their jungler is somewhat tanky too and I'm going to get a relatively early. However, if you take this runes, you won't be able to take enemy big wraith until level 9.
This rune page is when I know I'm going to go for sure and also if I'm against a champion where I can afford to trade with autos early on like
Standard spells, it provides you with escape, chase, combo, kill opportunities.
If your mid lane opponent is strong/hard to kill. jungler isn't a very strong ganker and if your bot/top has good CC/nuke, use this.
Moving through brush increases Nidalee's movement speed by 15% for 2 seconds.
One of the best passives in the game. It helps you chase, escape, and roam/gank. IT'S AWESOME.
Q: Javelin Toss / Takedown
Human: Nidalee tosses her javelin, dealing 55 / 95 / 140 / 185 / 230 (+65% of ability power) magic damage on impact (deals up to 250% damage the further away the target is).
Cougar: Nidalee's next attack deals additional damage based on how low her opponent's life is.
Cooldown 6 seconds
Cost 50/60/70/80/90 mana
Your bread and butter skill. The javelin itself has a bad base damage with an average AP ratio. HOWEVER, it scales to FREAKING 250% WTF? If you hit your javelin at max range at level 7 with say 2 dorans ring, it'll deal about 450 damage. Your catform skill, takedown, resets autoattacks and is also great for trading and finishing people off.
W: Bushwhack / Pounce
Human: Nidalee lays a trap that deals 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+40% of ability power) damage over 2 seconds, reveals the target, and reduces their armor and magic resistance by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 12 seconds. Traps last for 4 minutes.
Cougar: Nidalee lunges forward, dealing damage to surrounding enemies. Pounce is not affected by cooldown reduction.
Cost 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120mana
Your w is more recognized for the pounce. It helps you leap over walls or small ledges, you can travel much faster in general to catch up or to escape from enemies, and last but not least, it's an AOE nuke too! The bushwhack is VERY, VERY, VERY underrated. It's a dot that gives you vision of the enemy who steps on it for 12 SECONDS. THAT'S RIDICULOUSLY LONG. Also another feature that people tend to overlook is that it decreases the enemy's armor and magic resistance. This helps you to burst people down as soon as they step on it or have an overall edge by setting them up before a teamfight.
E: Primal Surge / Swipe
Human: Nidalee heals an ally champion for 50/85/120/155/190 (+70% of ability power) and grants them a 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60% attack speed for 7 seconds.
Cougar: Nidelee claws at enemies in front of her.
Cooldown 10 seconds
Cost 60/80/100/120/140 mana
Ahh I remember when Nidalee's heal used to heal you for 700 25 minutes in.... GOOD TIMES. Anyways so her E in human form is her OP Heal that both heals and boosts the target's attack speed for a handsome amount. Although it seems necessary to heal the AD carry but if you need it more, use it on yourself, if you die there is no source of heal to begin with. Use this spell to sustain yourself in lane! Her cougar form E is an AOE nuke that is directly in front of her in a deceptively large AOE. Use the Pounce+Swipe combo to farm!
R: Aspect Of The Cougar
Passive: Each additional rank increases the effectiveness of Nidalee's cougar abilities.
Nidalee transforms into a vicious cougar, gaining 20 movement speed, 10/20/30 armor and magic resistance and a new set of abilities.
Cooldown 4 seconds
Pretty straight forward spell. By unlocking this spell, Nidalee gains a set of 3 new abilities and increased stats when it cougar form.
Skill OrderThe skill order on Nidalee mid is rather versatile, as in you rank up what you need for the situation. At level one, you can either rank up or or .
Rank up when you think there will be a level one fight.
Rank up if you know there will be an invade and your team doesn't have a strong level one damage/CC. ALWAYS GET IF THERE'S A OR . It's also a good idea to get and laying them down around your lane's side bushes if the enemy team has a strong level 2 ganking junglers that start with red such as .
Rank up when there isn't going to be a level one fight/invade. Heal once when your jungler starts with wolves/wraithe then heal again when they go for the buff camp after you leash. I guarantee that you will make your jungler happy.
From there you get a point in each by the first three levels and max your .
A Little different for Guinsoos/Rod of Ages/GP10 Nidalee builds
With Guinsoo build Nidalee, you want to get 2 levels in since your won't hurt as much as the other builds and since if you're going to go the Guinsoo build, it's preferred that you take to start.
Item BuildsGod the main reason I didn't want to bother making a Nidalee mid guide was because of how in-depth I need to get into for her item builds. I'm going to try to keep this simple:
(wait 10 seconds after minions spawn if you want 4th pot)
If you're going Guinsoo Nidalee
Early Core Items:
for general tankiness + AP + Mana regen (We have 0 mana regen from runes so this helps a lot)
if you plan to roam a lot and/or if their jungler is relatively squishy like
if the enemy team has heavy CC or it's a champion that can punish you a lot by staying in melee range like
I'm going to make a separate chapter for this build... Get this if you're going to go Guinsoo build. By going , it makes up for the lack of overall damage from getting a
I usually hate getting this item since personally it greatly lowers her ability to roam/inflict great damage early on but this works too. If you want general tankiness and sustain in lane over damage.
Get this if you're going the GP10 build.
Always at LEAST at all times. Your is not enough.
Late Core Items:
This is in order from the Early Game Core Items
Always at LEAST at all times.
You shouldn't always get this item but Nidalee rakes up a LOT of stacks since she gets a lot of kills and most of all assists so it's not a bad idea to get it. ESPECIALLY since it's really hard to die with Nidalee Mid.
Example Final Builds:
THESE ARE ONLY EXAMPLES. YOU CAN GO WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT, IT'LL STILL BE FINE.
Guinsoo's Nidalee (Llnk115 Build)This build is basically inspired by the most hipster professional mid players, Llnk115, so all credits goes to Llnk115!
With this build, harassing your opponents is very rewarding since you will be doing a lot of damage towards early mid lane opponents with Flat MR Glyphs rather than armor.
Guinsoo's is the most cost-efficient item in the game and it goes incredibly well with Nidalee. Nidalee can keep the 8 stacks up at all times (Catform) and this item synergises well with Deathcap! It also helps you push very well since both AP and AD scales off into building damage.
With this build, you're looking to be more upfront than other builds, hence the .
Thoughts On ItemsItems I Like
She gets stacks very easily and she doesn't die much. Why not?
#1 ITEM ON NIDALEE OMG IT HAS EVERYTHING. IT'S ALMOST AS IF THIS WAS BUILD FOR NIDALEE.
Oh my god #1 stat on Nidalee, PURE AP. Even then if you think about Gold-> Stats efficiency, Guinsoos beat Deathcap by miles.
She fills 1000 tear stacks under 18 minutes and she is ALWAYS in need of mana, even with blue buff. PERFECT ON NIDALEE.
Your combo now deals over 9000 damage. You now also break a tower under 5 seconds. You still want some AP items before you get this or your lichbane procs are going to be underwhelming.
LET US DEAL 1800 TRUE DAMAGE.
Great item on Nidalee! You can burst anyone down!
Stacking them is really broken especially on Nidalee but I just find it too slow-paced for my taste.
Items I Don't Like As Much
Especially after the aura radius nerf, I don't see it as useful since you're not going to be around your enemies to actually affect them with the aura. I mean it's still ok if you're going the Guinsoo build since you're going to be near them more often
I dunno I just really dislike this item; So awkward.
Boots5/3 is awesome because you can travel at 500 movement speed in a bush but you aren't a jungler or have a cc to actually do something when you catch them. not worth it. Thing about cooldown boots is that you're going to have blue at all times and you're never going to have enough mana to sustain your 2.8 second javelins, no point.
You get health and some Magic pen. I guess you will be dealing True damage Mid game with Sorc boots + Guise + Magic Pen marks/quints/masteries but it's not worth it.
You don't have enough stable damage to make the most out of this item but I still like it getting this at late game mark so I can focus on healing my AD Carry instead of myself.
I really like tears of goddess but I always find Archangel to be somewhat lacking and not worth the gold. Still good if you have 1000 stacks of Tears though. Always get this item last.
No, that half assed mana regen and that half assed AP isn't going to help you much.
OK THIS ITEM IS GOOD I GUESS BUT I DON'T LIKE IT. Link does though so I respect that.
Only time it gives you full slow is when you land your javelin or mark them with your Takedown. It's still rly good though because later on when you chunk one and they're slowed, team can engage with like Flash + shurelya to catch them and go take objectives. There are better items.
OK it gives you good AP but active is useless since if you're in range to get focused down in teamfights, you're doing it wrong.
MatchupsCHAMPIONS YOU BEAT IN LANE
CHAMPIONS THAT DESTROY YOU
Haha you lose to every single one in lane. I'm not kidding about this, Nidalee mid's lane phase is absolutely terrible. You have almost 0 harass, you can't wave clear, you have no escape, and your heal sucks early.
So basically your objective before level 6 is to not die and farm well.
Early GameLevel 1 ~ 6
You are useless early game. Don't do anything except for trapping possible gank path and dont miss cs. After 6, try to take wraithes and wolf if you can after clearing your wave and look at other lanes to see if you can gank.
Also after you come back to lane, try to ward the enemy blue while they're not looking and try to steal it with your Javelin. It's funny and it's effective.
Mid GameLevel 7 ~ 14
This is where you hurt... A LOT. You should have your late core items by now and your max ranged should be doing around 7~800 damage. This is also a point where you stop roaming for a little bit to push your tower down since your opponent is likely to roam at this point. After you get rid of the tower, continue ganking other lanes. Remember that you can avoid wards by jumping over walls when ganking.
Late GameLevel 15 ~ 18
DO NOT GET CAUGHT.
At this point of the game, you will want to stay more as a human over a cougar unless you're chasing someone or escaping. While you dance around mid, just keep chucking those javelins until one of them are forced to go back!
Also make sure you tell your teammates not to engage until you've finished wearing your opponents out and keep everyone healthy with your . Don't forget to fill potential fight areas with your since they will really give your teammates an advantage.
Team FightsIn team fights, try to stay in the human form and basically don't let ANY SKILL (Human form) be on cooldown. Although you do a lot of damage to AP/AD carries and supports, it's fine if tankier champs intercept to take the hits because it'll hurt them a lot too, guaranteed.
Yourself > AD Carry > Top/Jungler > Supports.
Although healing your ad carry is important since will apply an attack speed buff, if you die there won't be any heal to begin with!
STAY AT THE BACK AND KEEP CHUCKING JAVELINS.
You can always chase and finish off/escape with your cougar form though.
Final CommentsNot much else to say, a LOT of people were asking for a guide so here it issss.
DON'T TELL ME THAT I DIDN'T TELL YOU GUYS THIS WASN'T GOING TO BE HARD TO PLAY!!!
