Introduction
YAAY!! Over 500 000 views thank you guys! :)

Hello there fellow League players!

My name is akkozen, and this is my very first guide. I'm from Hungary, i play on the EUNE server. In Season 2 i was around 1.9 k ELO, now i'm trying to reach Diamond in the Zyra's Flames Platinum Divison 1.

I hope this guide will help anyone who takes the time to read it through. The purpose of this guide is that so you don't have to open any other guide about [champ/orianna.png] on the net. I am sure you won't find anything else necessary to master this champ! ;)

"Why should i open this guide instead of others?" you might ask.

There are already a lot of Orianna guides out there and they are great imo, still in this guide you will not only find everything you need to know about this great champ, but you also get explanation why/when/what you should do.

After reading this detailed guide you will have a better understanding of the most effective choices between various Runes, Masteries, Item builds and Skill Orders.
Who is Orianna?
"Why would i want to play her?"

[champ/orianna.png] is one of my favourite champions, I am playing her since season 1 (since she came out) and i feel myself the most confident and effective with her, if it comes to playing AP carries. I had loads of fun with her and i think she's one of the most interesting AP carries out there, with a really high skill cap.

  • Orianna is a versatile, well rounded champ that can outharass enemies early game, has incredible farming potential, and on top of that, great mid/late game utility and damage output.
  • If you want to fix your teammates'- , or capitalize on the enemy team's mistakes, you want a champ that can defend allies and hurt enemies at the same time, having a lot of fun playing a unqiue, non-faceroll champ, then Orianna is a suitable choice for you.

So, are u ready to play some DodgeBall?!
Masteries
When you are in champ select thinking about what mastery page you should pick, most of the time you will have to choose between 3, depending on the following situations:

Standard

  • There's no unusual threat on the other side, nothing to be really afraid of: In this case and most of the time the most efficient mastery page for [champ/orianna.png] is the standard 21/0/9 page which looks like this:

The Mastery named "Spellsword" is great for [champ/orianna.png]! Actually it is a buff for her Passive [skills/orianna/p.png]. It will definitely help you to win most of the trades at early levels and making last hitting much easier as u get more AP. In late game if you can handle teamfight positioning, or u want GODLIKE split push power it also helps

Defensive

  • There are rare occasions when early game tankiness is more important then cooldowns or regenarating mana. Agaisnt champs who's attacks can't be dodged like [champ/leblanc.png] or [champ/fizz.png] you may want to use a defensive type of mastery page:

  • If you are against some AD mids like [champ/khazix.png] or [champ/talon.png] i suggest to go with 3 points in Hardiness for more early armor.

Utility

  • Now honestly, i don't really use this one often, however it can work out quite well with [champ/orianna.png]. Her main strength comes from her "utility" anyways, meaning a good [champ/orianna.png] player manipulates the battlefield with the quick casting and replacing of the ball. The 9/0/21 page is great for CDR and speed, however you will find your damage sub-par compared to the first two pages.

----------

Important Note:

Keep in mind that exprienced [champ/orianna.png] players wouldn't really need the defensive masteries, it's up to you whether you need more tankyness over your starting items and runes or not. Combining tanky runes (in the next chapter), masteries, and item build ("Scenario 1") may give you great survivability, but you want to be a threat, not a moving meatball!
Season 3 Runepage:

getting quite popular nowadays with champs who tend to AA in lane

The latest runepage i'm experimenting with:

  • Marks: Hybrid Pen - If you can afford these runes, they can come in handy for champions who use both their abilities and AA-s to do damage. Compared to the standard MagPen reds, these have 5.5 Magpen (MagPen marks have 7.8 together) which is only 2.3 less. Now normally i wouldn't recommend this, but since Orianna has great potential in her AA damage it seems that the added 8.1 ArmorPen is worth it. If you don't like to play aggressively in lane then don't bother buying these runes, cuz if u dont use AA it is kind of a waste honestly...
  • Seals: AP/lvl - lately i found that with the options Season 3 provides regarding starting items, it is quite easy to lane without the Manaregen Seals. HP/lvl is also a nice choice but i feel like i can survive with these easily so i suggest you try them out for the DAMAGEZ.
  • Glyphs: 1 AP/lvl + 8 FlatMR - With the 1 AP/lvl blue and the 9 AP/lvl yellows you are going to have 20 AP at lvl 18. The 8 FlatMR blues obviously help in lane against midlaners.
  • Quints: Flat AP - ...

There are mainly three rune pages i would recommend you to use on Orianna.

The first one is suitable for most of the situations:

  • Marks: Magic pen - nobrainer
  • Seals: Flat manaregen - i would always take Flat manaregen runes on [champ/orianna.png] over scaling ones.
In the following item builds section you will see why. After my first items and of course with blue buff that you get on it's second/third spawn, you will have infinite amount of mana. The only weakness you can have in early laning phase are mana porblems on the first 0-6 levels. With flat seals and masteries your early game problems are solved.
  • Glyphs: Scaling ability power - [champ/orianna.png]'s E gives her passively 10 armor AND magic resistence, and u can get that when you hit lvl 2. With that said you can get away with no flat MR blues, and scaling AP gives you even more shield actively and more damage mid/late game.
  • Quints: Flat AP - Greatly synergizes with your AA passive, laning phase harassment. And tbh: you don't really need anything else..

The second one is the best choice against AP assassins such as [champ/fizz.png]:

  • Seals: HP/lvl - these seals are great for the expected lvl 6 burst of AP assassins. They usually just wait until they hit 6 and then jump on you with everything they've got. These HP/lvl seals combined with flat MR glyphs will provide you the best defensive options.
  • Glyphs: Flat MR - Yeah i just explained why you wouldnt need these.. :P Even with that said i tend to use these agaisnt harder lanes, and i would recommend this one for beginners also. With these badboys and your E passive you will be even more tanky in the laning phase, making the life of AP nukers/harassers moer difficult (not even saying, you can use the "safe mastery page" i described earlier on top of all this!)

The third one is pretty useful against AD midlaners, such as [champ/khazix.png]/[champ/leesin.png]/[champ/pantheon.png]/[champ/talon.png] etc:

  • Seals: Flat Armor - Armor yellows are great against AD midlaners ("no sh!t akkozen.. -_- armor great against ADs..") you will take much less damage with thes, however you haveto pay attention to your manapool. I would bring 1 or 2 [items/mana-potion.png]s in this scenario.
  • Glyphs: AP/lvl - Since you won't really need MR agaisnt AD mids, AP/lvl glyphs will help you damage them more, and they also give you a nice advantage when you reach lvl 6.
Summoner Spells
[summoners/flash.png][summoners/ignite.png] or [summoners/flash.png][summoners/teleport.png]

Explanation:

[summoners/flash.png]

You would say there is nothing to be said here. If you are in trouble, you get away with this one. I aggree on that.
However flash can be used in an offensive way as we all know. Using it offensively may lead to epic fails if you aren't expreinced with [champ/orianna.png].

  • Fail example no. 1: Fight is almost over, you are chasing someone. You are between the enemy and your own ball. You forget that the ball is behind you. You [summoners/flash.png] + [skills/orianna/q.png] to the enemy. You are fairly closer, but your lovely little ball is travelling with 1200 speed, and u just see the enemy get away with no problem trolling "AHHAHA HUEHUEHUE LOLOL" in /all chat, and you are all like -_-..

Remember to keep the ball on yourself or even further to the target location when flashing!

  • Fail example no. 2: Oh how many times i saw this one (including myself ^_^): You were all good, you popped the ball on someone/somewhere in the middle of the teamfight, you just wait for the right moment to [skills/orianna/r.png]. Then suddenly out of nowhere a wild Amumu (or Sona etc) appears and you know an AOE stun slow w/e comes in a split second so you [summoners/flash.png] away to safety. Immediatly after, you use [skills/orianna/r.png]. You just realize you are very well safe and sound, however your ballsie just came with you and you ulted yourself hitting noone, maybe except some furious melee minions..... T_T

We could all list some more fails what we've seen by poor [champ/orianna.png] players (write them in the comment section so i can have some lulztime :P), so i wont go into any other ones, let's jsut keep in mind the main thing:

Always know where your ball is when you use [summoners/flash.png]!

An offensive example:

There are situations, where you can barely get to a teamfight/gank or something like that in time. Don't be afraid to use [summoners/flash.png] to get just as close that you can [skills/orianna/e.png] one of your teammates. [skills/orianna/e.png]'s range is 1100!! Imagine how far you can be, and still be able to save for.ex. your toplaner who is 1v1ing the enemy and will probably lose that fight: You can [summoners/flash.png]+[skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png] making not only your mate stronger with your shield, but speeding him up and slowing the enemy down, who is now trying to get away in panic...

An offensive example 2:

[skills/orianna/e.png]+[summoners/flash.png]+[skills/orianna/r.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]+[items/zhonyas-hourglass.png]: "U MAD enemies who got initiated by [champ/orianna.png] cuz she got bored and wants to T-bag all your facesssssssss???????" - in SivHD's voice

[summoners/ignite.png]

The famous ignite is something you want to get in every one of your games as [champ/orianna.png]. We all know what it is good for, so i won't go in any detail on this one.

[summoners/teleport.png]

If your are facing [champ/twistedfate.png] and you are not sure you will keep him at bay, you won't be able to demolish him in lane, you might want to consider taking [summoners/teleport.png] to help out your lanes when [champ/twistedfate.png] decides to ult on them. Even if you managed to beat him in lane, it can be a great tool ganking other lanes fast or being there at baron/dragon teamfights when you were somehow separated from your team.
Skill Order
Choosing which one of [champ/orianna.png]'s abilites should be maxed first, second and third depends on the circumstances:

Many players tend to blindly follow some guides instructions on runes, item builds, masteries and ofc skill orders. To be successful in this game you have to drop your rookie habits and start thinking about things on your own. Maxing skills on [champ/orianna.png] is quite familiar to [champ/leesin.png]. See, a lot of guys tend to just max in a certian order they saw in some guide or in a tournament etc. Don't! Look at the given situation and make the decision. There are certian situations you can find yourself in as [champ/orianna.png] most of the time.

These three main situations are:

Maxing Q - [skills/orianna/q.png] (recommended ~ most efficient imo)

You need to position your ball a lot in the laning phase, to
  • -harass, and deal sustained damage in lane for a low mana cost
  • -lasthit 2- or more creeps,
  • -place a "free ward" to one of the bushes

If you find yourself in this situation you want to max Q first. Maxing [skills/orianna/q.png] first gives you the most efficient harass in lane reducing it's cooldown to 3! seconds on the same mana cost (50) on all levels!

Maxing W - [skills/orianna/w.png]

You want a higher burst or a stronger movement speed buff, to
  • -deal more damage in one single ability
  • -get away from ganks faster
  • -be able to juke or position better in the laning phase

I rarely max W to be honest. While i see it's advantages, you have to keep in mind that your "hard-harassing" combo is [skills/orianna/q.png] PLUS [skills/orianna/w.png]! Not only [skills/orianna/w.png].. Maxing W will eat your mana and you won't even have any cooldown benefits from it. While you can deal more damage in one combo, as i stated before, i find [champ/orianna.png] more effective by getting your enemy low dealing sustained damage with [skills/orianna/q.png] and THEN going Ballz deep (^^ you get it?).

There's a lot of debate on maxing [skills/orianna/q.png] over [skills/orianna/w.png] is better than maxing [skills/orianna/w.png] over [skills/orianna/q.png] or not. Honestly i think it only comes down to personal preference. Just look at the numbers and you'll see yourself that this is also something that should depend on the situation. That's the good thing about [champ/orianna.png]. It suits a lot of playstyles and can adapt to a lot of things if you just recognize what your next decesion has to be!

Maxing E - [skills/orianna/e.png]

Oh boy you are in trouble if you are maxing this one.. :P

You want more passive armor and mr, and a stronger active sheild, to
  • -survive 1v1 situations early

"Y u feeeed?" You did something wrong and fed the enemy, or you just simply facing an assassin who is making your life miserable like [champ/leblanc.png] or [champ/talon.png] or stg like that. Maxing E gives you a much more safer laning phase, however keep in mind in most situations: The best defense is a good offense And that is getting your enemy so low with harassing that he/she doesn't even consider going after you..

(Ofc. you are always leveling up your [skills/orianna/r.png] when it is possible)
Item Builds
----- Starting items: -----

Usually:

[items/health-potion5.png]+[items/mana-potion.png]+[items/sight-ward.png]+[items/faerie-charm.png] or [items/crystalline-flask.png]+[items/health-potion3.png]

[NOTE: I'll refer to this startig setup later as "sustain start"]

On some rare occasions:

[items/cloth-armor.png]+[items/health-potion5.png]

[NOTE: I'd still take this against AD casters/nukers over S3 "sustain start"]
"Yo [champ/talon.png]! Is that you? Then F'CK YOU!" - [champ/talon.png], [champ/pantheon.png] or sometimes at higher elo even [champ/leesin.png]. Don't give up just yet. Go with these as starting items and u will be able to survive the laning phase without much of trouble.

[items/boots-of-speed.png]+[items/health-potion3.png]
It is for.ex. [champ/lux.png] standing against you at mid. All the dmg u get is depending on your positioning. The enemy ganks are only successful if she lands her skillshots. Go [items/boots-of-speed.png]+[items/health-potion3.png] and MOVE constantly!

Keep in mind these starting items are even more effective with the proper masteries, runes, and followup items mentioned in previous sections!

----- First back: -----

Now this is where your first big decesion will take place. When building Orianna, you have to start thinking about what your items will be this game when you are in champ select or at the loading screen. You have to look at the enemy team's comp and ask yourself:[/center]

Do they have great initiators/gap closer bruisers/one-shot nukers or not?

  • Scenario 1: "Yes they do"

In this case your first item will be a [items/catalyst-the-protector.png]. Try to farm enough so you can get the [items/catalyst-the-protector.png] and at least one [items/sight-ward.png].

This will cost you 1325+75 = 1400 gold

If you started [items/health-potion5.png]+[items/mana-potion.png]+[items/sight-ward.png]+[items/faerie-charm.png], use your [items/faerie-charm.png] and built it into a quick [items/philosophers-stone.png] and get an [items/eleisas-miracle.png] somewhere after [items/rod-of-ages.png]!

  • Scenario 2: "No they don't"

So it turns out they either don't have a teamcomp that can focus you down easily, or you are very confident about your teamfight positioning/map-awereness. If that's the case you want a [items/dorans-ring.png] and a [items/chalice-of-harmony.png]. Of course try to farm enough so you can buy at least one [items/sight-ward.png].

This will cost you 880+475+75= 1430 gold

(I wouldn't go [items/rabadons-deathcap.png] fast, i will cover my opinion about rushing [items/rabadons-deathcap.png] at the end of this Item Build Section!)

----- First big item: -----

  • Scenario 1:

So you've decided to go safemode this game and buy a [items/catalyst-the-protector.png]. Your first item will be a rod-of-ages. This is a great item on Orianna, for it makes her really tanky (not only cuz of the HP but -thanks to the AP- the stronger [skills/orianna/e.png] active as well) and of course it gives the much needed mana. With [items/rod-of-ages.png] you will be more safe from the enemy's focus and you'll have great early game sustain in lane, and HOOLY AP mid/late game.

  • Scenario 2:

Big plays! Your ball is everywhere, you are T-baggin your enemy and saving your teammates at the same time, speeding yourself/teammates to initiate/chase/fall back, and you just can't go OOM. Yes this item will be [items/athenes-unholy-grail.png]. It is just GODLIKE on Orianna. This item will give you an incredible mid game harassing capability with the manaregen and cdr. If you know that you can position well and you know how and when to use Orianna's abilities to be the most efficient for your team, then this item will make your game incredibly fun.

  • Against AD midlaners:

I didn't name this as a whole new scenario, just because it doesn't really happen that often. But if you are against some AD midlaners such as [champ/khazix.png] / [champ/leesin.png] etc.. You might as well consider building a [items/zhonyas-hourglass.png] first. An early [items/seekers-armguard.png] will help you stay in lane and win 1v1 situations agaisnt these champs. Not to mention [items/zhonyas-hourglass.png] counters lvl 6 dives of these AD characters.

----- Shoes that fit on [champ/orianna.png]'s feet: -----

  • [items/sorcerers-shoes.png] I get sorcboots after my First big item most of the time. They give you the needed magpen and speed. You don't really want [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] just yet, as you won't have any magpen (from items).
  • [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png] After i bought some MagPen (like [items/liandrys-torment.png]/[items/void-staff.png]) i consider switching my [items/sorcerers-shoes.png] for these. Usually my decesion to switch will depend on how many blues i get (do i have enough CDR), and on how fast do i need my abilites up (obviously). If i end up being more useful with the fast slow/speedup/shields than with simple dmgoutput from [items/sorcerers-shoes.png], i go [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png].
  • [items/mercurys-treads.png] I rarely get these, but they are great choice if the enemy has a lot of CC. However you really shouldn't get caught by anyone, since you will "operate" from the backline every teamfight...

----- Second big item: -----

rabadons-deathcap. I think i don't have to introduce this item to any of you guys. Doesn't matter which scenario (1 or 2) you are dealing with, this is the item you want to get next. Of course consider buying [items/sorcerers-shoes.png] meanwhile. If the enemy has a lot of skillshots or "runnin" junglers like Skarner for example you want to get [items/sorcerers-shoes.png] before [items/rabadons-deathcap.png].

----- Item progression: -----

So by now you have [items/sorcerers-shoes.png]+[items/athenes-unholy-grail.png]/[items/rod-of-ages.png]+[items/rabadons-deathcap.png]. It's time for your next decesion:

-"Everything is fine"

You are not focused, your positioning is great, there's no overfed enemy:
GREAT!!
In this case you can choose from two major offensive items:

[items/void-staff.png] Greatly increases your AP and the 40% magpen really hurts. Having this item i always consider swapping the [items/sorcerers-shoes.png] for [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png]. You want your CDR to be near 40% all the time throughout the game, and u don't really need [items/sorcerers-shoes.png]'s flat magicpen anymore.

[items/liandrys-torment.png] Even though with [items/void-staff.png] you can wreck almost every single champ it is not the most efficient in all cases. This new season 3 item works great on [champ/orianna.png]. Magpen, HP, and a passive working with your slow. If the enemy team FOOLISHLY did not shit their pants by this time and started to stack MR agaisnt you, then give this item a shot!

If the game goes exceptionally well for you u can even try [items/liandrys-torment.png]+[items/void-staff.png]. You will be amazed how much damage you do with "full magpen build"!

-"Omg they go hard on me

even with my [items/rod-of-ages.png] i am shut down immediately..."
  • ...by their AP carry/AP top/AP jungler: you buy abyssal-scepter.
"But wtf a k k o z e n? Abyssal's range is far shorter then Ori's ablities, are you nub? PF reported....gg /ff!"
Remember in this case you will use your combo on yourself/near you, given you just can't position out of the fight and there is noone who could stop AP enemies getting to you! With [items/abyssal-scepter.png] and [items/rod-of-ages.png] you will be very tanky against those AP damage dealers and you will have the needed magicpen what helps you to not even survive but win the teamfights, even with all the enemies sitting on your pretty face.
  • ...by their AD carry/AD top/AD jungler: you buy zhonyas-hourglass. Man how i love this item on Ori. Lee jumps on you? Riven slices your face? You will not only have the armor and the active, but you'll have 100 more AP on top of that which gives your [skills/orianna/e.png] a great boost! Armorception i say!

----- Finishing items: -----

-You've gone [items/athenes-unholy-grail.png] but you find yourself getting grabbed by blitz over walls/gettin nuked by LebLanc/gettin knocked up by Malphite: You want banshees-veil

-You are unstoppable you don't even give a fck anymore, they go nuts in the second they see your icon popping up on the minimap: You go malady or lich-bane.
Oh man..ok: you are safe in teamfights, you are a beast having used your abilites you can auto-attack like a boss. With [items/malady.png] your passive will wreck the enemy as you are AAing them. [items/malady.png] is simply the item EMPOWERS your passive so much you turn into a NEW CAST: THE AP AUTO-ATTACK CARRY

-Late game teamfights are all about harassing, you go back-and-forth between towers at mid lane, everybody is powerful as fck: You buy rylais-crystal-scepter or will-of-the-ancients. Yes i know Ori already has a slow. You have to decide in this part of the game if...
  • ...You need more tankiness and u want to get away from their shurelya's etc: with [items/rylais-crystal-scepter.png] your whole skillset will slow and you will have some good amount of hp (tho i rarely get this item)
  • ...You just want you and your AP top/AP jungler to be able to sustain the fights/pokes: you simply buy [items/will-of-the-ancients.png]

----- Other viable item choices -----

[items/morellonomicon.png]

Okay, Riot just buffed [items/athenes-unholy-grail.png] again. I don't know if they'll stop zig-zaggin on this item from now on or what, but the current state of the game puts [items/morellonomicon.png] back on the "other viable items" list. It doesn't provide more CDR anymore, however i would still consider buying this item for the passive. If you encounter a team with [champ/soraka.png] or [champ/vladimir.png] or stg like that, [items/morellonomicon.png] could help you big time.

[items/archangels-staff.png]

I really like this item with it's S3 changes, however i wouldn't buy it on [champ/orianna.png]. You won't be in any real trouble if u go [items/tear-of-the-goddess.png] -> [items/archangels-staff.png], however i think the above mentioned items work better cuz of their AP and CDR.

[items/deathfire-grasp.png]

Even tho i don't really like [items/deathfire-grasp.png] on [champ/orianna.png] - your main advantage is your range throughout the whole game so you won't really go into DFG range - it can be a good choice mid/late game, when some tanky bruiser is jumping on you.

[items/guardian-angel.png]

Personally i don't find this item that useful on [champ/orianna.png]. [items/zhonyas-hourglass.png] gives just enough armor with your [skills/orianna/e.png] to survive teamfights with proper positioning. [items/guardian-angel.png] is good for casters who are easily bursted down. If you were choosing the right item path, you won't have that problem.

Example final builds:

Scenario 1: - You had a hard time this game

[items/mercurys-treads.png][items/rod-of-ages.png][items/rabadons-deathcap.png][items/abyssal-scepter.png][items/zhonyas-hourglass.png][items/rylais-crystal-scepter.png]

Scenario 2: - You were owning this game

[items/sorcerers-shoes.png][items/athenes-unholy-grail.png][items/rabadons-deathcap.png][items/liandrys-torment.png][items/void-staff.png][items/malady.png]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A note on rushing [items/rabadons-deathcap.png].

Buying one or two [items/dorans-ring.png]s and then immediately getting [items/rabadons-deathcap.png] is not a good idea on Orianna imo. Here's the reason why:

You are not someone who kills by goin in on a champ who is near full HP and comboing him/her down in a second. Orianna's potential is in her effective poking/harassing capability, and ball positioning. She shines in mid/late game by using her abilities not only for damage output but for great utility. With [items/rod-of-ages.png] you will have more AP mid/late game, thus making your shield HUGE in fights, with [items/athenes-unholy-grail.png] you will slow the enemies/speed up your allies and quickly shield one of your teammates thus saving one person or the whole team. You can be a badass with [items/rabadons-deathcap.png] rush early, and snowballing over nubs, but you will lack the nasty good things that [items/rod-of-ages.png] and [items/athenes-unholy-grail.png] give later in the game.
Early Game
Guess what?! Your main goal is to FARM. Early/mid/late game, doesn't matter. When you see a jungle camp alive or a minion rushing furiously against your towers manmode, you want it to be dead.. by your own hands!

In early game however, you can only farm with AA. Of course you will have ~7 flat manaregen but u want to use that to zone our enemy so you can get closer to those ranged creeps. Don't spam your abilities wrecklessly or you'll go oom. Wait for your blue first!

Some tips:

Your main early game trading combo is:

[skills/orianna/q.png] (+[skills/orianna/w.png] if you have the mana) on the enemy, AA, [skills/orianna/e.png] yourself, AA+AA, then get back. You want your [skills/orianna/e.png]'s passive AND active on yourself through the whole trade, so that every single incoming damage is reduced by it's effect!

As soon as you AA your enemy creeps will aggro you, and that hurts in the early levels. You want your shield on yourself as fast as you can!
Mid Game
Ok, so you've got your hands on some nasty items now, you are starting to get comfortable around the map, tho the laning phase is not over yet!

Controlling your lane

Your main goal in mid game is to prepare for objectives, and farm at the same time. You have to be a bully in your lane with your blue buff and [items/rod-of-ages.png]/[items/athenes-unholy-grail.png]. Controlling your lane is not only good for your CSing, but also gives you oppurtunity to gank/help in taking objectives such as dragon etc.

Timing buffs/dragon

You want to know when your or the enemy's blue is up! With [skills/orianna/q.png] you can safely get near the enemy's blue when they are doing it or your jungler is skilled enough and wants to steal it. Just [skills/orianna/q.png] into bushes and move forward (don't facecheck lol.. T_T). Timing the buffs is even easier with the chat timer on, you just add 5 mins to the time you received the buff/ the enemy received theirs.

Dragon comes back every 6 minutes. You want to know it's time ALWAYS! Losing a free dragon to the enemy will slowly hinder your goldgains, and that will cause you to slowly lose the advantage to the enemy. As [champ/orianna.png] you have all the great abilities to stop a dragon attempt or to help your own. In mid game you have to know what's goin on at the dragon area!

Some tips:

  • 1: With a good amount of AP (~round your first big item) you can farm the whole wave with a [skills/orianna/q.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]+[skills/orianna/e.png] combo (+ some AA if needed)
  • 2: After that, go immediately for wraiths either on your side or the enemy's. First you will have go all around [skills/orianna/q.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]+[skills/orianna/e.png] the 3 little ones and then AA+[skills/orianna/q.png] the big one.
  • 3: Every time your jungler comes near doing wraths or red, or going counterjungling give him one [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]. You will not only help him to get less damage from junglemonsters, but that slight speedboost makes sure your team has faster ganks! (With 1st big item and blue you don't have to worry about mana!)
  • 4: Repeat...
  • 5: PROFIT!
Late Game + Team Fights
This is it! You will love this part of the game if you didn't screw up badly before!

Late game is all about getting objectives such as Baron / Dragon / Towers / Nexus etc.

You have your items, your team is grouped up, wandering all around the map, trying to either catch someone off-guard or forcing objectives. [champ/orianna.png] shines in this part of the game. With my suggested item builds you have a huge amount of AP by this time with great CDR/MANAregen.

Your job is clear:
  • poke the enemy team with [skills/orianna/q.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]
  • help to initiate your allies with [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]
  • catch at least 3 ppl with [skills/orianna/r.png]
  • throw [skills/orianna/q.png] into bushes preventing your rambo allies to facecheck and throw the game
  • defend your AD carry in teamfights with [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png] combo
  • help your teammates to get away from lost teamfights/facechecks with [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png]

[champ/orianna.png] is one of the best, if not the best teamfight oriented AP Carries. You may think you were a beast in lane, but if you can't support your team in a teamfight you really can't play [champ/orianna.png] yet. You have to be a support and an AP Carry. You can't be just one if you want to win games against skilled opponents!! Look at all your abilities and look at your team, there are 4 people on your team not counting you. Wasting [skills/orianna/e.png] on yourself for example, when you could save the AD Carry is a big mistake. Try to be as efficient to your team as you can. With time and practice you will know when and how you can be more helpful and dealing more dmg at the same time.

Note on the magical [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png] combo:

A "meh" Orianna player who positioned good and is behind all his/her team will chase ppl / hurry to objectives using his/her [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png] on herself. WRONG!

A GOOD Orianna player will throw [skills/orianna/e.png] on the person who is the closest to the target (enemy/objective) and use [skills/orianna/w.png] to speed that guy up! This way all other 4 allies will go through [skills/orianna/w.png] field, thus gaining the movement speed buff! = happiness!

Great Friends of Orianna
[champ/orianna.png] can work well with i would say all the champs in the League. However there are certain champs that just synergize so great with her kit that it's not even funny..

(actually for us, it is! HUEHUEHUE!)

Initiators:

for example: [champ/amumu.png] [champ/blitzcrank.png] [champ/darius.png] [champ/hecarim.png] [champ/jarvaniv.png] [champ/leona.png] [champ/malphite.png] [champ/rammus.png]

Give the ball to [champ/malphite.png] way before the teamfights start, so the enemy can hardly notice the ball on him (he's not actively shielded). All you need is him to hit at least 3 person with his ult. You just sit there comfortably, you don't even have to aim.. after his knockup press R, your teammates will puke rainbows, and your Teamwork badges will increase by 4!

Give [champ/rammus.png] an [skills/orianna/e.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png] combo! With that, his Powerball+[items/shurelyas-reverie.png] he will gain OP movement speed for initiation! (Just pray he dodges stuns/fears etc.. T_T)

Carries:

for example: [champ/draven.png] [champ/kogmaw.png] [champ/urgot.png] [champ/vayne.png]

[champ/draven.png] is about sustaining his damage by running around catching all his axes. What more can he wish then an extra amount of armor and speed in a teamfight?!

[champ/kogmaw.png] is a great AD Carry. The dmg he deals is enormous. The only things is he has no escape tools or dashes, so he is easily bursted down by gap-closer bruisers/ap carries. Giving him an [skills/orianna/e.png] or even a [skills/orianna/w.png] will make him your next buddie on your friends list!

[champ/urgot.png] is a funny example: Both teams are standing against eachother in late game mid, waiting for someone to make a mistake. How many times we saw an [champ/urgot.png] making the mistake to intiate with his ult, finding himself in the middle of 4 enemies.. It's not quite a mistake with a good [champ/orianna.png] on his side tho! Give [champ/urgot.png] an [skills/orianna/e.png] and as soon as the enemy team jumps on him after his ult, hit [skills/orianna/r.png], then [skills/orianna/w.png]! You not only bursted down the whole enemy team, but you helped [champ/urgot.png] to get away from that nasty situation!

With these examples said, you can imagine how many different various scenarios can be out there depending on both team's matchups! It's crazy! And you can be effective in almost any of them!!
Most Important Foes
You already read about building items, choosing runes and masteries against enemies. In this chapter, you will see a short "mini-guide" to the possible lane matchups that you can encounter in the laning phase:

Below the icons of each champ, i will list the recommended starting items, either my "Scenario 1" or "Scenario 2" item building advice, the preferred skilling order, the recommended rune and mastery page and -where it's needed- some tips and tricks about how you can deal with your foe!

The amount of [skills/orianna/p.png]s near the champ's icon shows how hard it is to lane agaisnt him/her.
Meaning it's Difficulty from 1 to 5.

Foes in alphabetical order:

[champ/ahri.png] Ahri - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]

Scenario 1
Runes: Second (flat MR)
Masteries: Standard
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: Dodge her Q and E, and harass her down pre 6 as hard as you can. If [champ/ahri.png] wants to jump to you with her ult keep your [skills/orianna/e.png] on yourself and [skills/orianna/r.png] when she is near you!

[champ/anivia.png] Anivia - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]
Starting items: [items/health-potion5.png]+[items/mana-potion.png]+[items/sight-ward.png]+[items/faerie-charm.png]
Scenario 2
Runes: Second (flat MR)
Masteries: Standard
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: You have to be careful with this one. Don't be too aggressive, and stay away from her in lane. Put the ball around your melee minions and use the ball from there. After she has her ult, try to push hard or you'll have to last hit under tower!

[champ/annie.png] Annie - [skills/orianna/p.png]
Starting items: [items/health-potion5.png]+[items/mana-potion.png]+[items/sight-ward.png]+[items/faerie-charm.png]
Scenario 2
Runes: Second (flat MR)
Masteries: Defensive
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: You can simply beat her by your godly range, stay away from her when she has her stun loaded! At lvl 6 she IS GOING TO flash+ult+ingite u! If u have some great reflexes flash as soon as she flashes and E+W away!

[champ/brand.png] Brand - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]

Masteries: Defensive
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: Try to bait her to overextend and ask for ganks! Always have your [skills/orianna/e.png] on yourself when she hits a spell on you, stay as far away from her as you can. If she gets you once with an ability she will crush you through the lane so be careful.

[champ/diana.png] Diana - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]
Starting items: [items/health-potion5.png]+[items/mana-potion.png]+[items/sight-ward.png]+[items/faerie-charm.png]
Scenario 1
Runes: Second (flat MR)
Masteries: Standard
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: It's kind of an even match-up. You have to harass her when she wants to last hit and dodge her weird Q. It is getting harder as she gets level 6. At that time she is somewhat tankier and you will have a hard time dodging her abilities (she is sitting on your face.. T_T). Try to disengage and punish with your abilities AND autoattacks.

[champ/evelynn.png] Evelynn - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]

Scenario 2
Runes: Second (flat MR)
Masteries: Standard
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: Don't let him hit any of his abilities on you, try to farm the lane as fast as possible! You won't really able to beat him if he is good, just try to get the most farm out of the laning phase you can.

[champ/gragas.png] Gragas - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]

Tips and Tricks: You can outplay this guy by moving constanlty and using your skillshots right at the same time. He is going to be a HUGE PAIN in early levels, not just cuz of his ability spamming (which you have to dodge all the time) but cuz of his AA passive every 12 seconds. If you see his AA getting the passive (the bomb in his hand starts to glow) back off a bit so he uses it on some minion!

Scenario 2
Runes: Second (flat MR)
Masteries: Standard
Skill Order: Q>E>W
Tips and Tricks: If he tries to get near so he can land a bomb, just [skills/orianna/q.png]+[skills/orianna/w.png] him, if he already landed one just [skills/orianna/e.png] yourself. However in this case you have to really choose the right timing to go in on him, and position yourself way back keeping him away with your harassing combos, cuz his bombs HURT!

[champ/zyra.png] Zyra - [skills/orianna/p.png][skills/orianna/p.png]
Starting items: [items/health-potion5.png]+[items/mana-potion.png]+[items/sight-ward.png]+[items/faerie-charm.png]
Scenario 2
Runes: Standard
Masteries: Standard
Skill Order: Q>W>E
Tips and Tricks: Use your range to your advantage, take out her plants using your AA passive! Zyra is really depending on good skillshots and the positioning of her plants. You want to be constanlty moving, and after some levels you have to use your abilities to push the lane fast!
Just some useful tips
I list here some tips that are not specially connected to [champ/orianna.png], but can help you to improve as a player in general at a great degree.

First there are three articles that i think every single person who gets into this game seriously HAS TO read:

  • 1st: MOWARTH's article on How to improve yourself:

  • 2nd: Father Tunde's How to gain elo article:

  • 3rd: sultryvoltron's Elo System article:

Here is my zen's opinion / How to be a Happy Gamer article on the NA, EUW, EUNE forums:

Secondly there's a neat little program you should give a try:

I've tried several item changers and i found them really useful. My favourite is Enigma's Item Changer.

link: http://enigmablade.net/lol-item-changer/

This really isn't necessary but it can help much. You won't need to search for anything in game, and it can really shorten the time u spend browsing the shop. Huge props to Tyler "Enigma" Haines who made this stuff.

Here's my recommended setup for [champ/orianna.png]:

Final Comments
If anyone actually made it this far, then first of all I want to thank you reading through all this! :)

I hope that this guide piqued your interest, and you can use the information, advices and tips i gave you. I encourage you to try out this amazing AP carry!

I am going to update the guide continuously as the Season 3 changes take place so stay tuned!

If u have any questions, or suggestions regarding this guide or anything else, feel free to comment here or add me in LoL. You can find me most of the time on EUNE as a k k o z e n, or as A K K O Z E N on NA/EUW (i made the NA account lvl 5 so i can use the NA forums).

- shoutout to all Hungarians out there! :P

I had never played orianna before. Now I play her in EVERY SINGLE ranked game. it's just crazy how easy it is. Just wait for the enemy team to walk over the ball, ult, w and they're instantly all at a quarter health. It's crazy. Thank you for finally giving me the way to the upper tiers of LoL!!!!!! :D

Detailed, but 9/0/21 should be worth a mention. I would agree that, in most cases when playing soloqueue, you'll want to deal the most damage possible, so 21 offense might be better, but 21 utility is very powerful on Ori as well, who relies heavily on cooldowns and levels to do what she does best: deal sustained damage and shit out utility all over the screen. I personally think it's the best mastery setup for her all around for me, but I'm in no way saying it's the best for everyone one and especially not for every situation. All I'm saying is that it's worth mentioning.

Props on the guide man, its one of the best i have seen. I mained top for awhile and just recently switched to mid, and I find that magic pen quints and marks with flat ap glyphs work rly well with high dmg ap champs. This gives you 14 magic pen plus 8% at lvl 1,after getting magic pen items you can have it at 48% plus 44, so if they had 100 magic armor now they only have 8 :) and i have looked into it and found that you can reduce armor or magic armor below zero and do boosted dmg so when hitting the adc for example who rarely gets any magic armor you will be doing more then true dmg

    @pawlakino & @Xavano

Thanks for the responses guys, in the next few months I won't be able to play as much as I used to cuz of work and school, but I will look into these issues and upgrade the guide as soon as I can.

Until then: GLHF with Orianna! :)

Ps @ everyone: Thanks for everyone who cared to give me some kind words and stuff i really appreciate it! :)

    Hey,

good job on the guide. Could you put the champion names as text into the lane/matchup section? This way we can ctrl+f our opponent name and don't have to scroll wildly scanning pictures :p.

Keep it up, especially the matchup section is nice and can be even nicer if you put some more tipps :).

Love the guide. I picked up Ori yesterday and have been following this guide to a T. Had a mirror matchup as my third game and got first blood hue.

Could you put some specifics on zoning with her? Like where is a good place to leave the ball and whatnot. Picures and video would help a lot. The range of her Q feels short to define her as a "long range" champion, but I've had instances where I placed the ball near their side of lane, let them push, and then whacked them with the ball by lining up where I move it to (closer to me) correctly.

    Thanks!

Aye, great guide you wrote there, I myself am a diamond 2 mid lane main, well, i only play orianna and fizz :D. I appereciate in your guide that you actually noted the W maxing path, as I enjoy it loads more than the Q everyone seems to be doing, i mean, it gives you absolutely enormous utility, with leblanclike burst capability.. But one thing you should note there, its about Fizz, you should mention that a good Fizz will all-in you lvl 2 or 3, and the odds are, if you let him do it, you die.. I mean when I play Fizz, i start fortpot + 4 hpots + ward, and always end up with a first blood when going lvl 2 all in with the fort pot, people just wont expect it, since everyone seems to underrate his early dmg..
And with the orianna failures; I picked her off at start of s2, and played her for TWO months, before realizing her auto's scale with AP.. ignorance eh? (i cant even count how many kills i lost just because i was like "autos on a caster - not worth it")
