Introduction
Elise is a unique champion in that despite dealing magic damage and scaling off AP, she does not excel with standard AP items. Her ratios are very poor, making her item choices and her role unlike any champion released.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

-Difficult to hit long range stun
-Scales extremely poorly with AP
-Forced to go melee to maximize damage
Masteries

High damage with strong kill pressure in lane. The ideal page as you are strongest during lane and need to abuse that.

Marks:
Magic Penetration - The ideal marks as that increases the damage of all your skills


Seals:

Armor - Armor is excellent in top lane, due to minion damage and bruiser opponents
Mana Regen - Mana regen is a possibility versus an AP laner

Glyphs:
Magic Resistance (Flat) - Great versus any champion that does magic damage
Magic Resistance (Scaling) - Good versus champions that have very little or zero magic damage

Quints:

AP - Ability Power quints are the best for strong laning presence

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

[summoners/ignite.png] augments Elise's laning power and gives that extra needed burst to finish off targets

[summoners/flash.png] is great for escaping and for engaging - standard summoner spell
Skills
[skills/elise/p.png] Passive: Spider Swarm

When Elise's Human Form spells hit an enemy, she readies a Spiderling. When Elise transforms, she summons Spiderlings to attack nearby foes. The maximum number of spiderlings increases with Spider Form's level.

Explanation:

Spiderlings are also rather tanky and take quite a beating. They naturally charge up as you cast spells in Human form, rarely do I transform into Spider form and not see the max number of spiderlings.





[skills/elise/q.png] Q: Neurotoxin / Venomous Bite

While in Human form: Deals magic damage equal to a base amount plus a percentage of the target's current health. Damage is capped against monsters.

While in Spider form: Elise lunges to a target with a poisonous bite that deals magic damage equal to a base amount plus a percentage of the target's missing health. Damage is capped against monsters.


Explanation:

Human form: The poke is insane. Spam it.
Spider form: The lunge also works for the human form's [skills/elise/w.png], causing the spiderling to jump onto your target.



[skills/elise/w.png] W: Volatile Spiderling / Skittering Frenzy

While in Human form: Summons a venom-gorged Spiderling that moves to target location and explodes, dealing magic damage to nearby enemies when it nears an enemy unit or after 3 seconds.

While in Spider form: (Passive): Spiderlings gain bonus attack speed.

(Active): Increases the attack speed of Elise and her Spiderlings for 3 seconds. While active, Elise is healed when she or her spiderlings attack.


Explanation:

Human form: This is Elise's only form of AoE, but since you don't max this immediately, you have a hard time pushing.
Spider form: Attack speed modifier, it does not reset autoattack animation, try to use this before you start attacking to benefit from the attack speed boost the most.




[skills/elise/e.png] E: Cocoon / Rappel

While in Human form: Elise fires a web that stuns the first enemy hit for 1.5 seconds.

While in Spider form:

- On enemy cast: Elise and her spiderlings ascend high into the air and descend upon an enemy target.

- On ground cast: Elise and her spiderlings ascend high into the air, becoming untargetable for two seconds. Casting Rappel on a nearby enemy during this time will descend upon your target.


Explanation:

Human form: A stun. Yay!
Spider form: Rappel functions similarly to Vladimir's pool but doesn't do damage. Ignite and any other DoTs still damage Elise during Rappel. Remember that you can Rappel and stay in the air for a second and then jump onto a target to benefit from the moments of invulnerability.





[skills/elise/r.png] R: Spider Form / Human Form

While in Human form: Elise transforms into a menacing spider with new abilities. While in Spider Form, Elise deals magic bonus damage on attack and has increased Movement Speed, Armor, and Magic Resistance. Each level of her ultimate allows Elise to summon an additional spiderling.

While in Spider form: Elise transforms into a human form with new abilities. Each level of her ultimate allows Elise to summon an additional spiderling.


Explanation:

Skills in spider form do not cost mana, don't hesitate to spam spells in that form. However, this does mean that Elise's mana costs in human form are fairly costly.




Skill Order

Max Q for maximum poke.

Max W second for extra damage.

E is a utility skill and gives no damage, max this last.

Take Spider form whenever possible for the extra spiderling.
Item Builds
Start: [items/boots-of-speed.png] + [items/health-potion3.png]/[items/health-potion4.png] (Go back at ~1:30 to grab an extra HP potion to be more aggressive)

Early: [items/dorans-ring.png] + [items/sorcerers-shoes.png]

AP, HP, MPen and Mana Regen. These early items help you be even stronger against your lane.

Vs Bruisers: [items/haunting-guise.png] + [items/chain-vest.png]

The extra MPen, HP and Armor allows you deal a lot of damage and still be tanky against the lane.

Vs APs: [items/abyssal-scepter.png] + [items/haunting-guise.png]

Even more MPen and more damage, you're going to be trading heavily and the MR will greatly benefit that area.

Late:
[items/sunfire-cape.png][items/frozen-heart.png][items/zhonyas-hourglass.png][items/void-staff.png]

Sunfire Cape: This item benefits from MPen and gives Elise much needed HP.

Frozen Heart: The attack speed debuff aura is amazing and CDR increases Elise's damage output.

Zhonya's Hourglass: Another 2.5 seconds of invulnerability is awesome, plus some bonus AP. A good alternative to Frozen Heart/Sunfire.

Void Staff: Against a team with a lot of MR, %MPen is great to have.
Laning
Harass using [skills/elise/q.png]. Use spider form as often as you can to harass without using mana.

[skills/elise/q.png] - 6 second CD in both forms
[skills/elise/w.png] - 12 second CD in both forms
[skills/elise/e.png] - 14 second CD in human/26 in spider
[skills/elise/r.png] - 4 second CD

Looking at the cooldowns for the spells and after playing her, there is a really simple combo that Elise players need to be used to.

While in human form, [skills/elise/q.png]/[skills/elise/w.png]/[skills/elise/e.png], [skills/elise/r.png] to spider, [skills/elise/w.png] -> [skills/elise/q.png]/[skills/elise/e.png], wait for CD, use [skills/elise/q.png], [skills/elise/r.png] to human, [skills/elise/q.png]/[skills/elise/w.png]/[skills/elise/e.png] for the kill.

In word form, use Neurotoxin/Volatile Spiderling/Cocoon, switch to spider form, use Skittering Frenzy then Venomous Bite and use Rappel if needed. Wait for a second Venomous Bite, then immediately switch to human form and use the spells as everything will be up again.
Team Fights
With a full tanky build, don't be afraid to flank the enemy AD/AP carries. Burst them with your combo and stall time with Rappel as your team hopefully comes to aid you. Use Rappel either to stall or ensure a kill, never use it to initiate - it's on an extremely long cooldown.
Final Comments
Elise is a fun and strong laning champion. However, her scaling is weak forcing her to rely on MPen for scaling. Also, due to her need to be close range to maximize damage, going glass cannon is not an option, forcing one to choose between tankiness and damage. I would like to see a few buffs to her ratios and possibly extra damage on her E as it currently does no damage. Regardless, Elise is a powerful champion in the right hands.

    thanks yeh ill try this with ar pen, people who say not to ad elise dont know the 1/2 of it. i am reluctant to mention is because with a great team she will just roll face so well. im not here to debate elo with you. some of the best players are in elo hell.

    Whoever uses ap runes on Elise, he's building her wrong. Sofear you're right, but you'd have even more success with armor penetration runes mid and late game than ad.

    tbh, if you dont consider ad (pen) with elise, your player her wrong.
    i jungle her,
    i build runes flat, ad marks ad seals ap glyphs armor pen quints
    masteries, 30 offense. summoner spells (smite,barrier)

    1st item dorans blade, you can with a 1 hit leash solo blue loosing any hp. the combo is run around human form, try land a stun, if not, just throw the q,w,r,q,w (while leaving timing for auto attacks in between) lvl w,q,w,w,e,r,q,w,e etc .....

    items
    rush a brutaliser asap. zerker boots + alac.
    finish bc, build witz end, throw on a rageblade, finish with your choice, bane/rylais or a rageblade/torment.

    seriously this is pentakill material.

    @ BlackXIV: I think the offensive masteries are because Elise's spiderlings, as well as the magic damage per auto attack she does in spider form both benefit from ability power. I agree that the tankiness would be a huge help on her, but it's really a a matter of preference. Keep in mind that the damage the spiderlings deal with Elise's w heal you, so more AP can equate to greater sustain.

    Why AP quints? Altough i feel MS are almost mandatory the obvious offensive choiche would be mpen. AP damage increase falls off as soon as u lv you Q to 2.

    Also why so certain on offensive masteries? Defence gives MS and CDR, in addition to tankyness and flat damage reduction, while offensive beyiond 9 only gives AP, u're sacrificing a lot just to get Executioner.

    I am not a high elo payer but all I have to say about this guide is that it's freaking awesome! I started to test Elise while she was free to play and I built her the way Xpecial does. I mostely played her top lane and two or three times mid lane. From 15 games I won 11 or 12 with Elise, and even if I lost a game it was because the others lane lost. I only lost my lane 1 time. I played against diffrent strong top laners like Irelia, Renekton or Olaf and many more and i won against all of them! Now i've bought Elise and she is one of my favorite champions now.

    after some games with elise i think that rushing hunting gaze is only when you are snowballing and u ll sell it anyway on late game for a voidstaff. Due to her % dmg q you can target most of the tanky and deal some serious dmg after finishing with the carries. If a target has more than 99 magic resistance (after having some calculations) it is more efficient having 49mpen +46%mpen than just 69mpen at mid/late game specially when you are dealing with champions that have 150 or more mr
