IntroductionKatarina is often seen as a high skill cap mid lane ap assasin. This makes most players scared to play her but she is a lot easier to play and to master than meets the eye.
Katarina is a high burst damage; high mobility, no mana mid laner who excels in farming, assasinating and team fighting with her amazing AOE damage although she is shut down fairly hard by CC. Katarina is very fun to play mid laner who is very versatile and suits the play style of many players.
This katarina guide is designed to show you how to dominate your lane so that the enemy ap mid is useless late and you are a one woman wrecking machine that will kill their entire team in a blink of an eye.

MasteriesThe masteries i run in this guide are as shown 21-9-0
why 21 in offence?
you want to be taking 21 in the offence tree because you are an AP assassin that means you are prioritizing damage over anything else and everything in the offence tree is perfect for Katarina.
why 9 in defense? the 9 in defense is to deal with your early laning and your overall squishiness. Taking the +6 magic resist is so you can trade well in lane along with the -1 minion damage( minions fricken hurt pre level 3) the health per level and the +30 from veteran scars is to deal with your overall low base health pool.
note: if you feel like you are vsing a very tough lane against really high burst mages e.g Leblanc you can take a 9-21-0 mastery though i do not recommend it as you go better into late than most of these burst mages.
In depth mastery reasoning :
summoners wrath : The bonus AP and AD actually help quite a lot on katarina they add about 40 damage to her total combo which in the earlier levels (1-6) is quite significant)
sorcery : The only thing limiting Katarina's ability usage is cooldown reduction this mastery is amazing for increasing her damage output
blast : The AP per level from this really helps t gives about 400 gold worth of AP which however small it seems it rather significant.
Arcane knowledge : The bonus magic penetration is amazing, This is honestly the best part of the offence tree for katarina. the reason it is so good as percentage penetration for magic damage is very hard to come by , the only other thing providing it being a void staff.
Mental force : The early 6 AP really helps you with trading in lane and farming creeps.
Archmage: When you are reaching your full build ( upwards of 500 AP) this mastery will be giving you 20+ Ability power and you want to be getting as much Ability power as possible.
Executioner : This mastery really is just compulsory on any assasin / main damage dealer. The bonus 5% really is a lot your level 6 ultimate ususally deals 400-500 damage so adding a bonus 5% on the top of that is ridiculous.
Durability : This is really just to make you more tanky into the later game when you are skirmishing and team fighting.
tough skin : This is really just to reduce the damage while farming your wraiths not that essential on katarina but i feel theirs nothing better to put it in.
resistance : This mastery is amazing for Katarina, it means she can out trade any other mid laners and push them out of lane easily.
Veteran scars : This is the same as durability it is really just for the tankyness it provides during fights.
why not take spelsword?
You do not take spellsword because as an assasin you are not spending time auto attacking people, you jump in then jump out. Also in lane you are not auto attack harrasing since you are melee so this mastery is very obsolete also the extra last hitting assistance that it gives is unneeded as katarina can just psam her spells to last hit..
RunesThese runes are pretty basic but you can swap them out
Marks: +0.95 Magic penetration , building items like haunting guise, abbysal scepter and void staff you want to be taking these all the time, no other marks come close to comparing to these.
Seals: +1.41 armor seals, i take these to keep me quite durable from enemy auto attacks, minion aggro and possible jungle ganks. Although you can take health per level seals however these do not reach their full potential until late game. If you are vsing a heavy burst mage e.g. Leblanc as stated earlier you may want to consider taking flat magic resist seals just so you can tank their early burst and trade with them.
Glyphs: + 1.49 magic resist, like the seals i take these so that i can trade early with the enemy laner and be durable later on in the game. You can take ability power per level glyphs if you please as these work just aswell it is honestly personal preference as to whether you are a player who likes to be in the thick of it or if you like to pick people off and not be taking much damage in the fights. But as i said these glyphs help extremely well with trading with the enemy laner.
Quintessences: +4.95 ability power, these quintessences yet again can be switched out for quintessences of swiftness, movement speed quints help you roam and be more agile in lane but the AP scaling on your abilities is just too good to pass up and these help you immensely in trading with the enemy laner early on and can nearly guarantee that you win your lane. Take ability power quints if you are focusing on your own lane where as take movement speed quints if you are planning on roaming a lot.

This is a more roaming orientated rune page. I take the ability power per level because you do not need the magic resist because you will not be in lane as often.
Summoner SpellsWhy do i take these summoners?
you want to be taking flahs because of the extra mobility that can be used to maybe initiate a fight or secure a low hp target or as an escape tool while getting ganked, over all it is just a great summoner for nearly all mid lane assaasins and is vital for katarina.
You want to be taking ignite purely for the added damage to the already ridiculous combo that you deliver. Just like flash this summoner spell is almost vital on all mid lane assasins
Barrier : this summoner spell is quite good for out trading the enemy laner or diving them without taking any damage, if you feel more comfortable taking barrier instead of ignite then by all means do.
This can be useful for chasing down low hp enemies and securing kills or for extra mobility in team fights but generally the movement speed from ghost isnt enough to compare with the versatility that flash offers. if you get ganked flash will save you 95% of the time where as ghost wont be as successfull.
This summoner spell can be used for roaming quite well to other lanes and also for pressence on the map. an awesome thing you can do it gank bot then teleport up top and secure another kill and nobody will expect a thing. If you are going to swap out a summoner spell for teleport then swap out ignite as having teleport-ignite is too dangerous since you are a squishy mid lane assasin.
Generally you don't want to take this but if you notice there is a target in the enemy team that you need to exhaust and nobody else in your team is running exhaust then by all means take this.
rarely ever take :
Heal is generally what you want to take in difficult lanes but katarina doesnt really have that many difficult lanes so i do not reccomend taking this. But if you do find yourself in a matchup that you arent comfortable with then by all means take heal.

Seems cool and can be kind of funny but seriously dont ever take this.
You aren't jungling
Champion kills or assists reduce Katarina's cooldowns by 15 seconds.
Explanation: This is what makes you incredibly strong in team fights. This passive will mean you will putting out more damage than any other mid in the game and will mean you can use your skills to engage and then promptly disengage on the enemy.
Q: Bouncing Blade
Katarina throws a dagger that bounces from enemy to enemy, dealing magic damage and marking them. Her next spell or basic attack against a marked target will consume the mark and deal additional magic damage.
Explanation: This spell is what will make you win the majority of lanes it is basically free ranged harass that hits multiple targets and gives huge multiple target damage output in team fights. The range on this means that you will be able to freely trade damage with the enemy laner especially if they are a melee range champion.
W: Sinister Steel
Katarina whirls her daggers around her, dealing magic damage to all enemies in the area. If she hits an enemy Champion, Katarina gains a burst of speed for a short duration.
Explanation: The mobility that the bonus movement speed from this provides is incredible it means that you can dodge most slow moving skill shots in lane and will have a much better time dealing with ranged champions. The AOE damage that this provides is perfect for team fighting it is a very high amount of damage on a very short cooldown.
Katarina instantly moves to her target's location and takes reduced damage from enemies for a few seconds. If the target is an enemy, she deals damage.
Explanation: This skill means that katarina is one of the most mobile champs in the game. This has a 10 seconds cooldown aswell as getting refreshed on kill/assist this is what makes katarina amazing not only in lane but also in team fights. She can just jump around dodgeing everything that comes at her.
R: Death Lotus
Katarina becomes a flurry of blades, throwing daggers with unrivaled speed at up to three nearby Champions. Daggers deal magic damage and reduce incoming healing on targets hit.
Explanation: This makes katarina the amazing assasin that she is. This has amazing base damage, amaing scaling and it's all AOE this is one of the best straight damage ultimates in the game. Also the cooldown on this is ridiculously short and with your passive it means that if you get 3 kills / assist in the fight you will be able to use this a second time.
Skill orderMost Katarina players will max their sinister steel first where-as my play style i max my bouncing blades first and then my sinister steel.
Explanation: i max my bouncing blades first because as i have stressed in this guide this is simply dominating your lane and winning every trade and to do that you max your bouncing blades for the op ranged harrass that will dominate your lane opponent.
The reason i max sinister steel second is because maxing shunpo is a very small damage increase as sinister steel not only gives more base damage but is also AOE damage. The sinister steel also has a somewhat decent range on it so you can harress your laning opponent with it enforcing your dominance even more.
Item BuildsAs i noted previously my build is mainly durability based grabbing the zhonyas/ abbysal sceptre and haunting guise for that added tankiness but also focuses on magical penetration.
The reason behind the early hex-tech revolver is because while nearly every mid laner in the game with exceptions of akali,kennen,vladimir and mordekaiser run on mana, this means that since you run on nothing at all you can out sustain them in lane with the spell vamp you are getting from revolver. This means they will have to back in will miss upwards of 1 creep wave of experience and gold, if this is a siege creep wave you will then get a level ahead of them and about 150 gold. This stacks up and after 3 or 4 times you will be atleast 2 levels ahead and will have a 600+ gold lead on them.
Rabadons Deathcap: Rabadons death cap is an ap assasins bread and butter, you need this to deal Tonnes of damage and one shot your enemies
hextech gunblade : the early revolver lets you completely dominate your lane aand the aditional ad this gives is perfect for your ultimate and sinister steel
void staff, sorcerers shoes, haunting guise and abbysal scepter : magic penetration & reduction is seriously op on katarina you have ridiculous scaling and you are dealing true damage, whats not to love
Guardian Angel : you do tonnes of damage. you die , GA activates , you get resets while in GA, you come back to life EZPZ pentakills
These items synergies so well together. They give you durability, mobility and the magic penetration is an amazing addition to katarinas kit
This item gives you even more durability against the enemy mid laner and the passive that it adds makes you literally do true damage to the enemy mid.
This is just for the amazing scaling with your spells.
This item gives amazing durability against physical damage and the passive works wonders for katarina. You jump in use your and then activate your then by the time you are out of the passive your and will be off cooldown.
This item is really just an upgrade to your revolver because you want to keep the spellvamp. The active from this item is also quite useful on Katarina it adds an extra 300 damage to your combo and since you have no in built CC the slow is very usefull.
The reduced cooldown on flash helps incredibly late-game. This reduces the cooldown of your flash by 75 seconds which makes a huge difference when you need an initiation or escape having flash up is the best option.
Why don't i build a
The reason this item is not a part of my build is because: firstly the only spell you have that applys the full slow is your shunpo which put you right on top of the enemy anyway. Secondly the cost of this item is not worth the health and passive that it provides you, for the same amount of gold you can purchase a or for less you can purchase an both of these items help you a lot more because not only do they supply practically the same amount of tankyness that supplies but they also add so much more to your damage output than
Building this against a very cc heavy team is highly advised.
Instead of turning your into a late game, rushing it into a early on is very cost efficient as it gives a reasonable amount of ap and spell vamp and since it gives cooldown reduction it sinergises very well with katarina. The bonus effect of 25% bonus damage also really helps when taking jungle camps just to get you that little bit ahead in lane.
Early gameIf you follow the runes and masteries i suggest you can outrade every ap mid in the game as long as you play smart.
against people with heavy cc e.g Lux, swain, orianna: when your bouncing blades is off cooldown make sure you target the champion, do not make it bounce of creeps into them as it reduces the damage dealt severely, use your shunpo to dodge their respective cc's (swain nevermore , orianna's ball and lux binding / slow) then walk up and just anihilate them with the bouncing-sinister-death lotus combo that should kill them if not leave them under a fifth hp.
DO NOT BE AFRAID TO USE YOUR ULT TO HARASS
- your ult has a short as hell cooldown do not be scared to use it to push the enmy laner out and lose exp/gold on creeps
How to do this: when the enemy laner has backed use all of your abilities to push the creep wave up to the enemy tower, this will cause the tower to kill the creeps before the enemy laner can get back into lane for the gold/exp.
warding, for mid you want to be warding the 2 side brushes and the enemy wraiths. Ward the two side brushes so that you know if the jungler is creeping in your bush. Why ward the enemy wraiths? you should be warding these so that you know when you can take them and it is a good way to see if the enemy jungler is either taking their red,ganking bottom or ganking mid so you can pretty much make their jungle useless to the bottom side of the map by warding this one spot.
ALWAYS CARRY A WARD ON YOU
- Katarina's shunpo can jump to friendly wards, this is OP AS HELL its like a second flash but it can go even further and only has a 10 second cooldown.
Mid GameKatarina's mid game is quite simple. Just keep farming and taking wraiths then when you have pushed the enemy laner out of lane go and roam to help your bot or top.Or try and arrange a counter jungling escapade with your jungler and either kill their jungler or take one of their jungle buffs.
Try and force dragons on the other team as with Katarina you have godly mid game and will easily win any fight your team gets into.
Aslong as you stay in lane and keep taking wraiths you should be 1-2 levels up on the enemy laner at all times from the amount you have been in lane longer than them and the bonus experience that you are gaining from wariths.
Late GameKatarina's late game is even simpler than her mid game. Just keep pushing lanes to take towers and cause pressure on the map so that your team can either team fight with a numbers advantage or will be able to get free map objectives e.g. dragon, baron and jungle buffs.
Try to pick people off with Katarina because if the enemy is missing their ad carry or ap carry in the next team fight then you will always win the fight.
Once people start building a significant amount of magic resistance late game Katarina's damage will be lackluster, your job is essentially to jump on the enemy ad - one hit him then let your ad carry do the rest.
Team FightsIn teamfights Katarina has a huge presence, with her low cooldowns; large AOE damage, high mobility and her amazing passive.
What to do during teamfights: use your bouncing blade on either the squishiest person in the fights e.g
AD carry or the enemy mid and if you have to pick out of those two target the one who is closer to the rest of their team ( this is so you can hit everybody with your bouncing blade and will apply the passive to them. You then want to get in range to use your sinister steel on as many people as possible. At this point you want to use your shunpo to jump out of the fight until you get your passive procced onto your abilities. Repeat this and you will surely win the fight unless you are against a heavy cc team. In which case you should throw your bouncing blades onto the enemy carry then either wait for the reset or wait for the cooldown.
Using your ult in a team fight: you want to be using your ultimate when you are near the 3 squishiest enemies. The reason for this is that your ultimate only hits three people so you want to be getting the most damage off from it. Although you want to be targeting the squishies do not use your ult to take down the enemy support. Priorities the enemy carries then depending on whether there Jungler or Top is the squishiest target them.
Beating Ahri is all about patience. Use your and to harass her in lane then use your to dodge all her damage as it is all skill shots. Another part of laning against Ahri is make sure her charm is on cooldown before you go in for the final burst with your ] as it will just cancel it and leave you open for a full counter burst. If you have fast enough reactions bait out the Ahri charm then as it is travelling towards you ontop of Ahri then proceed to use your full burst and demolish her.
Beating Akali in lane is fairly simple as your out ranges and out damages her mark of the assasin and Katarinas does the same against Akalis crescent slash. Akalis shroud is practically useless against you as it does not stop you from hitting her with your , ] or . When Akali goes into her shroud use your ]on the minion closest to her shroud. This will cause the blade to bounce to her then proceed to use your and if she runs out and she is low enough to die to then by all means use it. But if she is not low enough to die to your then use it to disengage so that Akali cannot trade damage with you.
Just like Ahri anivia has a way to stop you from using your but it is dodgeable using and does have a rather large cooldown. Anivia is very mana hungry so you can harass her out of lane incredibly easy and if she doesnt trade back she will run out of mana very quickly meaning you can keep bullying her and she will not be able to retaliate. Anivias crystalize ( her ice wall) is rather useless against Katarina as if she blocks you off with it to either set up a gank or escape you from bursting her down you can just use your to blink over it and escape or continue harassing her.
Annie can burst you down just as you can to her but just like Ahri if you have quick reactions and use your you can dodge the majority of her damage. Annie has several ways of shutting down your so looking at the amount of stacks she has on her passive can mean the difference between a kill and a death. If annie is on low mana and is on under 3 stacks of her passive then she more than likely will not be able to stop you from using your as she has rather high manacosts. Just like every other mana using champion you can out harass, out sustain and just basically out damage Annie.
WHEN VSING BRAND ALWAYS CARRY A WARD
The majority of Brands damage is skill shot reliant. This is a very good thing for Katarina because as you may have realized you are some what of a anti-skill shot champion. When brand throws his Sear at you use your to dodge it and vise-versa with brands pillar of flame. When Brand uses his ultimate on you if you are near a minion or an ally then put down the aforementioned ward and shunpo as far away as possible from the friendly minion or champion. Doing this will minimalise the damage that brands ultimate will be dealing to you. When you are against a brand only go in to burst him down when you know that his skill shot stun is on cooldown, this way he has no way of stopping you from using your and you will grab an easy kill.
Cassiopeia is another champion who is also majority skill shots. With your you can dodge all of her damage except her Twin fangs which when you are not afflicted by poison has a rather large cooldown and is not much of a threat to you. Against Cassiopeia your is amazing. As it puts you behind the enemy that means as soon as Cassiopeia uses her Petrifying gaze you can behind her and not only dodge the slow/stun but also dodge the entirety of the damage.
Note: because of her passive Cassiopeia does not run out of mana easily so to force her out of lane you will have to get a bit of pressure from your jungler so that she either has to burn her mana escaping the gank or gets to low enough hp that it would be dangerous for her to stay in lane against you.
If the enemy has picked Diana i would highly recommend not picking Katarina. Diana has a very good way to shut down your and a built in shield so your in lane harass is sub-par against her. Diana also has an ability similar to your this decreases the value of your as if you use it to disengage from Diana then she will just follow with her Lunar rush. Also against Diana it will be nearly impossible to push her out of lane as with her shield and her low mana costs she will usually tend to stay in lane just long as you will.
Against an Evelynn this is where you should consider taking movement speed quintessences. Evelynn is a heavy roaming mid laner with a lot of mobility. She will hardly ever be in lane and will be constantly ganking other lanes. Keep an eye on which way evelynn is going and then follow. You out damage evelyn in burst damage so if you counter gank you will more than likely be able to win the fight. Evelynn's ultimate is a AOE skill shot so if you feel like she is going to use it to the furthest away ally or ward to dodge the massive damage that it will deal.
NOTE: when evelynn leaves lane to gank try and push your creep wave up to her tower as it will cause her to miss out on experience and gold.
Fiddlesticks has 2 ways of stopping your and neither are dodgeable with your . Both of his CC's ( silence and fear) are long range single target spells. Fiddlesticks can also sustain in lane from all the burst you are putting down on him using his drain. I would highly not recomend picking Katarina against fiddlesticks. If you are picking Katarina against fiddles you should take the runes for roaming as he will beat you in lane and even if you get behind in farm fiddlesticks does not scale as well with items as you do.
Fizz is another melee range AP assasin. You can out trade fizz during laning and you will push him out of lane very easily because he has very high mana costs. Fizz also has only one ability that will stop Katarinas but it has a huge cooldown and if you are not channeling your then you can dodge it incredibly easy with as it is slow moving and fairly small.
Galio's damage is entirely skill shot based and has very high mana costs. Using your you can easily avoid his damage and then trade with him. When laning against Galio as long as you do not hit him when he uses his bulwark you will push him out of lane extremely easy. Galio's passive means that he can stack a large amount of magic resistance and still do a lot of damage. When against a galio grabbing a void staff before your rabadons will help a lot as it make his magic resistance futile.
Gragas is quite difficult to lane against as Katarina as his passive and his drunken rage will mean that he can stay in lane for a long time. This being said with your you literally dodge every part of his combo. When he throws his barrel out just use your to increase your movement speed and get away from it and him so you can also get out of range of him using his body slam. If gragas then uses his ultimate during the the travel time quickly to the furthest away ally. After gragas has done all this jump onto him and either kill him or push him out of lane. In lane gragas is hard to harass as his barrels and his drunken rage mean he can stay at high mana and just farm from long range. Try and use your combo on him after he has thrown a barrel this will either cause him to use more mana body slamming away or you will trade decent damage with him. Gragas's ult will stop your ultimate so make sure that it is on cooldown before you try anything against him.
Karthus is a matchup you definately want. You can harass him really hard early and since he has low mobility he cannot roam very well and cannot assist other lanes without using his reqium. His reqium also has a huge cooldown so take advantage of this. Without a blue buff karthus will run out of mana very easily so until he either builds his rod of ages or gets a blue buff you will be able to push him out of lane incredibly easily. Karthus has no way of cancelling your so use it whenever the opportunity arises. Yuour high mobility means that karthus will more than likely not be able to land the majority of his lay wastes and will not be able to keep you in his defile as you can just out of it.
Kassadin is a very annoying person to lane against. Kassadin can roam just as well as you can and has a very short cooldown on his silence which can cancel your . Kassadin also has a blink just like your so your will not be as effective while vsing him. Kassadin can use his rift walk to get out of range of your and your very easily. When vsing a Kassadin you want to be harassing him a lot early as this is when he has no rift walk to escape from you and if he tries to trade he will run out of mana incredibly quickly. Getting a kill or two up on Kassadin will make the lane a walk in the park, Once you have your revolver and damage that he does to you you can just heal back through the spellvamp.
Since their a lot of things to know while playing Katarina there are a lot of little things to keep in mind while vsing yourself. You are both very mobile, you both have extremely high burst and you can both stay in lane forever. To counter the enemy katarinas burst opt out for an early negatron cloak to mediate the damage she will be dealing you. This will mean you can out trade her and win the lane. Also against another katarina try and out roam her as you being a kill ahead will mean that you will roll over your lane with great ease.
Kennen is a rough lane for katarina. Kennen does not run on mana and will most likely pick up and early hextech revolver just like you. This means that you will not be able to bully him out of lane or trade with him. Kennen also has several in built ways of stopping your and he also has very high mobility just like you. The only upside of kennen vs katarina for you is that if you are quick enough you can out of his ultimate before he gets the stun off. I highly recomend not picking Katarina against kennen as it will require a lot of skill to beat him in lane.
Leblanc is a very bursty AP mage you cannot out trade her in damage as she will just burst you down from full. Grabbing an early negatron cloak against le blanc is a must. When vsing a leblanc try and out of range of her when she uses her distortion, this will mean she wont be able to get her burst off and will have wasted a lot of mana. When laning against leblanc use your large AOE damage to push her up to her tower. This will mean that le blanc will not be able to farm very well and you will get a head in gold by a lot. Leblanc has one way of shutting down your ultimate so be careful. Try and engage on her when she has just used her burst this means she will have nothing to stop you ulting and you will get free damage off one her. Your cooldowns are a lot shorter than le blancs so you will be able to apply more damage to her in a more extended time period. Le blanc is practically useless late game and you will be a lot more versatile than her and will be a lot more of a bigger asset to your team. So just do your best in the lane and you will excel in the later game.
Lee sin is a very hard person to lane against as katarina as you need to be in melee range to last hit creeps. When you do this lee sin will just jump to his nearest creep use his AOE slow on you and proceed to burst you down. Also lee sins ultimate cancels out your and it has a very small cool down and deals massive damage to you. The damage from one of lee sins combos is enough to easily burst you down from full. Aswell as out damaging / trading you lee sin also runs on energy and has amazing built in sustain this means he is impossible to bully out of lane. Lee sin also has abilities that cancel out your with his resonating strike and iron will he will just jump to you if you try to jump away or will jump away if you initiate on him with your . If you do end up laning against a lee sin as Katarina then i advise taking armour in your masteries and having armour seals, then opting out for an early chain vest to deal with the massive physical damage he will be dealing.
Lissandra is a very difficult matchup for katarina to play. Lisandra's ult will completely lock you down and make you very vulnerable. In teamfights if you try and jump into their team and get reset's you will just be lissandra ulted and completely bursted down immediately. In lane lissandra can kite you with her q and will make you very easy to gank with her w. Iif you see the enemy pick lissandra then i highly advise not picking katarina into that.If you try to jump in on lissandra in lane you will either be ulted or she will just use her e to escape back to her tower and out of range of your ultimate.
Malzahar is a fairly difficult lane, When you hit level 6 his ultimate will cancel out your ultimate. Malzahar can out trade you and out sustain you in lane. If you go close to malzahar he will use his malefolic visions on you and you will basically lose any trade with him. If you are trying to go in to kill malzahar make sure his ultimate is on cooldown or else he will just suppress you the second you go near him. Malzahar also has unlimited mana in lane, the passive on his malefolic visions means he will regain mana evrytime it kills a creep which literally means he can never run out of mana. When vsing a malzahar as katarina try and roam and get kills on other lanes so you can get ahead and either buy a or any offensive items so you can out trade him and eventually bully him out of lane.
Mordekaiser is a failry simple lane to go up against, you can use your to get out of range of all his damage. I highly advise opting out for an early against mordekaiser because it will take his ultimate off you and lower his burst damage by a lot and he wont able to get a ghost of you. This is much like the laning aginst malzahar morgana can out sustain you in lane because of her passive ( bonus spell vamp) and can out trade you in damage if she hits her dark binding and tormented soil combo. Morganas ultimate cancels out your ultimate and will make you very susceptible to ganks but like malzahars ultimate this has a lot longer cooldown than Katarinas so only go in on her when you know it is on cooldown.
Note: this matchup depends on the skill of the orianna player. Most of the time Katarina will be able to out poke and out sustain orianna in lane and you can dodge all of her damage using your but try and see if the orianna is good at orianna, if you know the person is good at orianna try and keep safe and just farm and roam as you will not be able to trade with her or kill her.
Ryze is annoying to lane against as he gets very tanky very quickly the trick to beating ryze is try deny him early game as he will have a low mana pool and will not be able to trade with you. Try and go in for a kill when you hit 6 as your combo will greatly out damage his. After this though you want to either be trying to deny him of blue buff or roaming as he will of built a lot of health and magic resistance and you will not be able to kill him.
Swain is a fairly straight forward lane to play. Use your to jump over his never move and then just hit him with your and combo. Swain is incredibly mana hungry and although his ult heals him for a bit with your you can easily out sustain him and bully him out of lane.
Talon is a very hard lane for katarina since the season 3 update. Talon can silence you during your ultimate and just out damage and out sustain you in lane, Talon also roams equally as well as you do. I recommend not picking katarina when faced against a talon and if you are try and get your jungler to get you a kill or two up so you can roam early, this way you can always stay ahead of him and late game let your top lane bruiser deal with him.
Twisted fate is a fairly diffcult lane for katarina his pick a card can easily cancel out your ultimate and it has a low cooldown. His blue card from pick a card also gives him mana back so you cannot push him out of lane. If you go in on him while his pick a card is on cooldown and you dodge his wild cards then you can get harass on him but as soon as he hits 6 he will start roaming. Since you cannot out roam a twisted fate i advise that during the time he is roasming you just push his lane and free farm, Doing this will potentially get you and your team ahead because you will have much more creep score than him and you will hopefully take his second tower.
Veigar is a fairly simple lane for katarina as she can out trade him incredibly easy until level 6, when veigar hits level 6 though he will have the potential to one hit you so i advise getting an early negatron cloak to counter the burst that he will be dishing out to you. You can use your to jump out of veigars stun and to dodge his giant skill shot AOE nuke. Veigar is very mana hungry and has no in built sustain so pushing him out of lane is failry easy. when you go in on veigar make sure his stun is on cooldown this will assure you to get your full off and will enable the easy kill.
Although vladimir has no way of cancelling out your he can use his sanguine pool to get stop the blades hitting him and to get out of the range. So trying to burst him down from full is going to be quite hard. Although his pool does have a significantly large cool down so try and bait out his pool then go in for the kill. This way he will have absolutely no way of getting away from your . vladimir's abilities are very close range so if he comes near you to get his combo off use your and to get on top of him and then to do massive damage. Early on when vladimir has not purchased his it will be incredibly easy to bully him out of lane as if he tries to trade with you he will get incredibly low from your spells and his.
xerath is a very long range AP caster that has huge mana costs. As katarina you can use your to dodge the majority of his damage. Xerath has a stun that can shut down your ultimate but it has a huge cooldown. Xeraths combo delivers very high damage but it has costs a huge amount of mana so if he is out of mana go in on him because he cannot kill you/ trade with you. Xeraths main form of damage is a long range straight line skill shot nuke. This nuke is very easy to dodge with your and will mean that he will be very easy to bully out of lane if you are constantly dodging this.
Zyra is a failry easy lane for katarina, You can use your to dodge all of her damage and to get out of range of her plants. You can also dodge the knock up from her ultimate using this means after you go in on her you will be able to quikcly get away before getting caught in her CC. Zyra has incredibly high mana costs so pushing her out of lane should be easy. Just do this and then roam as zyra has poor roaming and to kill people she needs to use her ultimate which has a massive cooldown.

General counterpicksIn this chapter i will cover the general non-mid laners you want to consider not picking Katarina against.
This guy is scary for Katarina, he can shut down your ultimate very easily and will be very tanky late game so you will not be able to harm him.
Yet again a scary guy for Katarina. Has many ways of shutting you down and is just in general an annoying champion to vs as a melee champion.
This guy will destroy you. Once you are grabbed into his range he will literally two hit you. When you see him in the other team i highly recommend opting out for an early zhonyas.
She is in the same position as alistar and blitzcrank. Many ways of shutting you down and is scary tanky late game.
He has the most cc in the game i believe and he will just make your life a living hell
Be very careful when against a skarner. Let him waste his pull on one of your tanks then go in to fight. If he pulls you, you will be instagibbed and useless during the fight.
Just because fiddles is not mid he can be jungle or support and this will shut you down very hard, he has his silence and his huge duration fear, when you see a fiddles on the other team play safe at all teams unless you can see him on the map.
Cho gath is very scary for katarina he has 2 ways of shutting down your ultimate and his cc is just amazing, if the enemy has a cho gath in their team then be weary in lane and make sure you know where cho is before you try and make a play, if you roam and this guy conouterganks you it can turn the gank around a lot.
Thresh has 2 ways of bringing you out of your ultimate and if he get's you with his hook even if you shunpo away he can pull stun you and pull you back to him, also if you shunpo through a wall of his ultimate you will activate it and lose 99% movement speed.
Lulu is a very annoying champion to vs as Katarina. Lulu can bait you into thinking that the enemy is easily burstable but if you jump on top of them and try to ult them down Lulu will ult them which knocks you up and cancels your ultimate and gives them a huge amount of hp back. Also in team fights Lulu can use her whimsy to silence you and make you absolutely useless and can also kite you for her team by constantly using her glittterlance.

General tips for soloQ1. Always say good job when your team does something well, morale wins games
2. Never get mad at somebody for doing something wrong
3. if somebody is losing their lane don't complain, do something about it!
4. Do not argue over picks as this will just cause people to play badly
5. THIS IS A TEAM GAME! , do not think you have to constantly 1v5 to "carry your team"
6. Do not blame the jungle or support, every mistake is your mistake, learn from them!
7. A loss isn't the end of the world, just keep your chin up and keep on going.
8. It isn't solely on the support to buy wards. If you are top, mid or jungle BUY WARDS
9. Just because you won your lane does not mean you will win the game, you have to co-operate with your team and make plays.
10. It's a team game if a bad decision is made then it's the teams fault, do not flame one person it will make them play bad and YOU WILL LOSE.
