Introduction
6/12/2012 Created Guide, finnishing some Chapters.
8/12/2012 Added Skill Chapter, not yet finished.

Hello there, I'm Adoxx. I started playing League a year ago and I always enjoyed the game.
I've tried many champions but [champ/chogath.png] was always my favorite.
I'm not here to tell you builds that will win all games or show you top plays but my intention is to share what I've learned from playing him. What I do against the different opponents toplane.

I don't like Cho in the jungle to honest but he's a beast toplane and I wonder why he's an underrated champion.

I hope this guide will help you guys out and if you notice I've missed something feel free to contact me.
Masteries
In masteries I take 9 - 21 - 0, mixing some offence with defense. After all, you still are the tanky DPS of your team and these will help you a bit.

I take Summoner's Wrath and [summoners/ignite.png] together on Cho, after popping ignite you'll propably find yourself fighting/chasing and 5 AP and AD will help especially early game.

The defensive tree should speak for itself, more armor and MR will help you sustain better, a bit more of HP and trenacy.
On Cho'Gath I run Magic Penetration reds, Flat Armor yellows, Flat Magic Resist blues and Ability Power Quints.

The combination of your Quints and red makes you farm easier and deal slightly more damage against your opponent.
The yellows and Reds are there for better sustian.
Summoner Spells
[summoners/ignite.png][summoners/flash.png]

Explanation:

[summoners/ignite.png] together with [skills/chogath/r.png] deals a ton of damage.
I still get shocked, early on it can destroy a full health enemy.

It's also good to prevent an enemy te get some healing effects (EA Irelia Ultimate) while you are fighting with him.

[summoners/flash.png] is your friend, escape or gapcloser.
Since cho has only his [skills/chogath/q.png] to stop ganks it's always wise to take [summoners/flash.png] if you fail to land it.

Skills
[skills/chogath/p.png] Passive: Carnivore

Whenever Cho'Gath kills a unit, he recovers 34 - 68 (+2.5 each level) health and 3.5-7.75 mana (+0.25 each level).

Explanation:

[skills/chogath/q.png] Q: Rupture

Ruptures the ground at target location. After a short delay, enemies are launched into the air for 1 second, dealt 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 305 (+100% of ability power) magic damage, and have their movement speed slowed by 60% for 3 seconds.

Cooldown 10 seconds

Cost 90 mana

Range 950

Explanation:

[skills/chogath/w.png] W: Feral Scream

Cho'Gath screams in a cone in front of him, silencing enemies for 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 second(s) and causing 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+70% of ability power) magic damage.

Cooldown 16 seconds

Cost 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 mana

Range 300

Explanation:

[skills/chogath/e.png] E: Vorpal Spikes

Toggle: Cho'gath's physical attacks launch spikes which deal 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 (+30% of ability power) magic damage to a line in front of him.

Range 40

Explanation:

[skills/chogath/r.png] R: Feast

Deals 300 / 475 / 650 (+70% of ability power) damage to target champion, or 1000 damage to target minion (ignores resists).

If the target is killed by Feast, Cho'Gath grows, gaining 90 / 120 / 150 maximum health (maximum 6 stacks). Cho'Gath loses up to half (rounded up) stacks upon death.

Cooldown 60 seconds

Cost 100 mana

Range 100

Explanation:

Skill Order
I prefer leveling [skills/chogath/w.png] first, since this is his main source of damage followed with [skills/chogath/q.png].
Take a point early in [skills/chogath/e.png] because this makes you last hit more easily and win most early basic attack fights.

Alltough there are situations where I like to level up [skills/chogath/e.png] faster (EA against Teemo).

Always take your [skills/chogath/r.png] when possible.

So basically:
[skills/chogath/r.png] => [skills/chogath/w.png] => [skills/chogath/q.png] => [skills/chogath/e.png]
Item Builds
Start

[items/boots-of-speed.png] + [items/health-potion3.png]

When you play against champions with mixed damage output or skillshots it's recommended te start with boots end three potions.

[items/cloth-armor.png] + [items/health-potion5.png]

If you have to lane against AD damage champions (ea Riven, Wukong, ..) al skills scale with AD and it's better to start with a bit more armor but keep in mind you'll need to land your Ruptures good to prevent Junglers to catch up with you because of your slow movement.

Early Game

[items/ninja-tabi.png]/[items/mercurys-treads.png] + [items/dorans-ring.png] + [items/dorans-ring.png] + [items/crystalline-flask.png]

I prefer [items/mercurys-treads.png] instead of [items/ninja-tabi.png].
Ninja Tabis still have good stats but I seem to do better with the reduced trenaty from the murcs.
Pick up the [items/dorans-ring.png] for the early damage and health.

You'll see, Cho will farm extremely well with these rings.

The [items/crystalline-flask.png] is a great item, instead of buying [items/health-potion.png] and [items/mana-potion.png] it's combined and gives you 3 stacks.

Mid Game

Depending on the matchup I build [items/abyssal-scepter.png] or [items/frozen-heart.png].
When it's a magic damage opponent I build a [items/abyssal-scepter.png] and a [items/glacial-shroud.png] for the cooldown reduction.

Late Game

After reaching your core build it's really game dependend what items you should build.

Are you doing good? Go for a mix of damage and defense:

[items/ninja-tabi.png]/[items/mercurys-treads.png] + [items/abyssal-scepter.png] + [items/frozen-heart.png] + [items/liandrys-torment.png] + [items/guardian-angel.png]/[items/wraith-collar.png] + [items/ruby-sightstone.png]/[items/wits-end.png]

Your team is doing well but need a tank:

[items/ninja-tabi.png]/[items/mercurys-treads.png] + [items/abyssal-scepter.png] + [items/frozen-heart.png] + [items/wits-end.png] + [items/spirit-visage.png] + [items/sunfire-cape.png]/[items/ruby-sightstone.png]

Item Explanation

Why [items/liandrys-torment.png] instead of [items/rabadons-deathcap.png]?

[items/liandrys-torment.png] gives you 70AP and 200HP
Passive: 15 Magic Pen
Burns 5% of their current health over 3 seconds

[items/rabadons-deathcap.png] gives 120AP
Passive: +25% AP

[items/wits-end.png]
Cho has one of the highest base damage on level 18 in League of Legends, combine this with a level 5 [skills/chogath/e.png] and some AP you will be raping faces.

[items/wraith-collar.png]
+50 AP, +30MR and + 5%MS, just a great item overall.

[items/ruby-sightstone.png]
More map control, help out your support. The 300 Health is always helpful.

[items/warmogs-armor.png]
I don't like this item on Cho, he gains 900HP on 6 stacks and makes you tanky enough without it.

Feel free to pick up some aura items if your Support/Jungle didn't pick them up yet.

Matchups
I will try to explain how I play against most common toplaners.

[champ/teemo.png]

Teemo won't stand a chance, this is one of the champions where I like to level up [skills/chogath/e.png] instead of [skills/chogath/w.png]/[skills/chogath/q.png] first.
His blinding dart will stop your basic attack damage but your [skills/chogath/e.png] will still hit him. He's also squischy and with a good combo of [skills/chogath/w.png]+[skills/chogath/q.png]+[skills/chogath/r.png]+[summoners/ignite.png] you'll take him out with no troubles.
Pickup your [items/mercurys-treads.png] + [items/dorans-ring.png] + [items/dorans-ring.png] + [items/abyssal-scepter.png] + [items/glacial-shroud.png] in lane and you'll come out on top.

[champ/jax.png]

A bit tougher then overall champs,I just build my usual skill order.
It's easy to see when he will engage, he'll try to stun you with his Counter Strike. Land your [skills/chogath/q.png] on yourself, when he lands you'll be able to get some free hits. If he decides to further attack use your [skills/chogath/w.png] to stop him from using his abilities and punish him some more with basic attacks;
Your basic attacks and [skills/chogath/e.png] will deal more damage then jax his basics.

[champ/garen.png]

This will be a farmlane, garen needs support from the jungle so do you.
Usually they engage with their Decisive Strike (silence). I tried different ways to handle with this but the most profitable is landing [skills/chogath/q.png] on yourself followed with a [skills/chogath/w.png]. You win with basic attacks because of your [skills/chogath/e.png] early on.
All his skills scale with AD except for his ultimate (Demacian Justice), so I try to pick up a [items/glacial-shroud.png] early combined with [items/mercurys-treads.png] to decrease the duration of his silence.
