This is the serious part of the guide because the beginning actually matters on Olaf, you can start many ways, and the way you start and continue your build determines how the game goes.

Why do we buy a Black Cleaver instead of a Bloodthirster? Or an Atmas?
- Olaf is THE BEST champ that benefits from building health, Black Cleaver has health, CDR, and Armor Pen, all things that Olaf lives off of. Why? W. His W{Vicious Strikes} Olafs attack damage is increased and he gains life steal AND spell vamp like a fucking man. It scales incredibly godlike due to the AD that you gain when activated is increased by 1% of his maximum health. So let's do some math;

frozen-mallet - 700 Health
warmogs-armor - 1000 Health
zekes-herald - 250 Health
the-black-cleaver - 250 Health
randuins-omen - 500 Health

All that added up is 2700 on top of his base health of 2022, you have 4722 FUCKING HP.
THAT'S 47+35 EXTRA AD WHEN W IS ACTIVATED. A TOTAL OF 82 EXTRA FUCKING AD. VIKINGS ARE MEN THAT TAKE HITS AND GIVE NO FUCKS.

Hey guys, I am a 1.6k elo player and my favorite champion is Olaf.

Who the fuck is Olaf?
OLAF IS A FUCKING VIKING.
Olaf is a no-fuck-giving bruiser that can stick to any champion in the game and WILL kill them out of shear force of will. He is an innately tanky champion that can run into a fight get to whatever champion without getting stopped or slowed by any form of cc.

Key Masteries:


Offensive Tree

  • Fury - This mastery significantly increases Olaf's damage output by synchronizing with his passive [skills/olaf/p.png] and his [skills/olaf/w.png]. You don't need the CDR since, through items you'll be getting max CDR. No need to waste masteries.
  • Deadliness - As a no-fuck-giving bruiser you need some AD, this mastery is like working Olaf's biceps out, THEY GROW IN TIME, BICEPS ON BICEPS.
  • Weapon Expertise - What kind of bruiser {besides Singed} doesn't love armor pen? OH YOU'RE EZREAL HAS A GA? HA.

Defensive Tree

  • Tough Skin - As Olaf, in lane you will be throwing axes at the enemy champion then running (usually into their minions) to catch the axe. Minions are fucking OP and do more damage than champs if you let them. This negates some of that damage and leaves you with better trades.

That is the only mastery I need to explain myself for, pick these masteries. They work in almost every situation. UNLESS you go against a Vlad or Rumble top, then you trade the 2 point in Hardiness into Resistance.

Olaf VS AD


Armor runes for better trades with your opposing AD laner.

Marks: Normally people would go all Armor Pen, which is good and all, but I like to throw in a little extra ad for the early game trades you would under go in top lane. So Armor Pen and some AD works.

Seals: Armor. ARMOR ARMOR ARMOR. This is what makes this page special. As a top laner you go against a majority of AD bruisers. You need armor to make trades effective.

Glyphs: Flat MR. The best. Or you can go scaling, it's all personal opinion. Kind of an investment, meaning you have to get to late game to reap the full benefits.

Quints: Here you can be creative and go Health Regen, or Health, but my recommendation is going AD to equal out the armor pen you have. REMEMBER WITHOUT ANY AD ARMOR PEN IS USELESS.

Olaf VS AP


Health per level helps here, more health = more AP needed to take me down. Plus health scales incredibly well with this brutal fucking viking.

[skills/olaf/p.png] Passive: Berserker Rage


Explanation:


This passive makes you a fucking BEAST in extended brawls. This sexy passive allows him to have 1% increased attack speed for every 1% of missing health. Which is one of the reasons why he doesn't need to build AS and can afford to build tanky and still crank out stupid amounts of damage. Possibly the best top lane passive in the game.




[skills/olaf/q.png] Q: Undertow


Explanation:


Olaf's bread and butter. This skill is what I prefer to max out first. This skill almost hands you over kills if you can catch an opponent with just one axe. Then you undergo the process of throw-catch-throw-catch-throw-catch-dead. This ability also allows for amazing ranged poke which allows you to lane well, and even if you're losing to the point where you can't cs comfortably, just chuck some fucking axes at some minions for cs and you'll be ship shape. Combines with [skills/olaf/w.png] it increases the damage from the axe, and give you back some sustain. A beastly combo.



[skills/olaf/w.png] W: Vicious Strikes


Explanation:



The ability that allows Olaf to build Health and still punish champions without any natural sustain. IT gives you AD and life steal when activated. Combined with [skills/olaf/q.png] you can smite down the weak from afar with punishing axes.



[skills/olaf/e.png] E: Reckless Swing


Explanation:


One of the most broken skills in the game. When maxed out, 340 true damage nuke. Don't worry about AD or Armor Pen, this fucking broken skill allows you to smite down any champion in the game regardless of how many resistances they have. This skill makes you a viking god.


[skills/olaf/r.png] R: Ragnarok


Explanation:


This skill allows Olaf to run into a group of 5 and literally destroy anyone with little resistance, this skill allows you to go full hero mode combined with ghost to get to that squishy back-line and start hammering away at the little squish AD's. No CC? More Armor Pen? More Resistances? I'LL TAKE IT.

Olaf has the potential to beat almost every melee top laner since he is a bully, the only reason you would die in top lane is because you misplayed or you don't have wards and got ganked or because you were a greedy dummie who thought you could take them on with your low health passive shenanigans. So I will leave these here so you could have a better understanding on how to win against certain champions.

Difficulty ratings: 1-10, 10 being the hardest.

This fucking bitch, hella squish. NINJAS CAN'T BEAT THE LAF. No, but in all seriousness, this match up can be difficult post 6 if you don't start stacking health, and you better have those [items/mercurys-treads.png],or you won't survive. You can win this lane if you abuse the early game and catch her with axes. If she tries to [skills/akali/q.png] you then goes into proc it, punish her for it, by trying to land a [skills/olaf/q.png] and a [skills/olaf/e.png]. SHE CAN BEAT YOU POST 6, BE FUCKING CAREFUL.

He is hard to fuck with. He can passively farm while gaining health and mana from any dent you put into him. His mana costs are rather high, so try to engage when you see he is lowish on mana. While you fight him be aware of the rupture animation Constantly move around him not directly behind him, making it hard to land a disengage rupture or silence. DO NOT FIGHT HIM AT LOW HP. HE WILL EAT YOU.

This lane is rather challenging to a player who isn't too familiar with Olaf and his abilities. This man is a newer version of YOU. A bully, with two short cd nukes, and an ulti that does not give a fuck about how protected you are. Although you can out-lane him easily, you have [skills/olaf/w.png]. Meaning you have sustain. Darius has no natural sustain and cannot deal with long term brawls as well as you do since you have sustain and he doesn't. You may want to change your leveling into [skills/olaf/e.png]>[skills/olaf/w.png]>[skills/olaf/q.png] simply because you need to abuse your sustainability over him and force him to leave lane. I recommend taking [summoners/heal.png] just to be able to bait out the ulti and destroy him.


[champ/riven.png]7
Riven is a bitch. A real bitch, her goal is snowball your shit to the point where you can't do shit.
In order to beat riven you're gonna have to stagger your leveling between [skills/olaf/q.png]and[skills/olaf/e.png] to drop her shield then do your catch-throw method with axes. It's also a good idea to do this because Riven can easily dodge the axes, so you will have to wait until she engages on you in order to [skills/olaf/e.png]. A key to winning this lane is to bait out her shield, wait the 3 seconds for it to die, then hit her with your own [skills/olaf/e.png] while her stuff is on CD. If she tries to trade with you, just pop [skills/olaf/w.png] and through a [skills/olaf/q.png] at her - at this point, she'll try to run, giving you another easy [skills/olaf/e.png] to land on her. Your [skills/olaf/q.png] is awesome at destroying her mobility, so landing them is essential to winning the lane. BE A MAN AND DON'T BE FUCKING AFRAID.
Early Game

  • Olaf has a brutally potent early game, meaning if you play it right you can end up with an easy kill at lvl 2 by using the catching technique to secure a kill. You also have a reasonably safe lane against a lvl 2 gank, all you need to do while running away you throw an axe over your shoulder and slow them down.

  • Practice passive aggression. You do this by farming, and denying them farm because they are scared of all the fucking manliness that emits from your body, meaning if they attempt to walk up in order to CS, you land a [skills/olaf/e.png] right onto their face.
  • On your first back don't be greedy and try to rush an item. I.e; You have 480 gold, and a [items/ruby-crystal.png] is only 475, fuck that, buy a [items/long-sword.png] and get a [items/sight-ward.png], or buy a [items/sight-ward.png], go back to lane farm then on your second back buy that item and another [items/sight-ward.png] Wards are vital.
Mid Game

Olaf's mid game. Probably the weakest point he'll ever be in the game. This is what you do.


  • If you're winning hard, take the tower top lane if you haven't already, while also keeping your tower alive.
  • When the lane is pushed, feel free to roam and gank. With some CDR, you know those [items/ionian-boots-of-lucidity.png]THAT I TOLD YOU TO FUCKING BUY, ganks with are extremely strong.
  • Focus on securing objectives, dragons, towers. If your lane is in good condition and you have a good idea of where the enemy mid and jungle are, go ahead and counter jungle a bit.
  • However, if you lose your tower, I'd recommend keeping the river heavily warded and pushing back to attempt to take their tower. A common misconception is that freezing the lane is a good idea. 75% of the time this will just cause your enemy top to roam and snowball his team to victory. If you push the lane he will be forced to come back and defend the tower. It's all personal choice. Let the enemy laner go about wrecking your team in 5v4s while you stay your fat ass in top lane cs'ing, or you can push it to tower then force 5v4s in your favor.
Late Game

Olaf is a late game terror.


  • Utilizing the wrecking power of your combined [skills/olaf/q.png] into a [skills/olaf/e.png] is just broken, even without a lot of dps items you'll have a high amount of AD due to being tanky and your [skills/olaf/w.png] scaling with all the immense health you'll be building, thus your axes will hurt, and you'll be hurting that little squishball in the backline, because no one will stop you.
  • Your E will always hurt, 340 damage doesn't sound much, it does sound much if you consider 340 with max CDR. As I said, axes will always hurt throughout the game if built right.
  • Use [skills/olaf/w.png] and [skills/olaf/r.png] wisely, dont use [skills/olaf/w.png] just because it's up, but use it the way you'll get the most out of it, the cooldown is rather long and you won't have the "WOW THIS GUY IS A DAMN ASS TANK AND WRECKS MY FACE" face on the enemy ad carry or whoever you're charging at. We all get that satisfaction.
  • You'll want to tunnel vision carries, for the most part, but if they're kiting you too hard just [skills/olaf/q.png] a carry and then back up to [skills/olaf/e.png] a tank.
  • You may ask how do I win games with Olaf D:< here is your answer....
Ult+Ghost=Dead Carry. Everytime.

    @Fhatality I'll have to try it, it might work. Problem is with that is that they are consumables, meaning, you can't build anything out of it, unlike flask where you can sell it for 190 at any point in the game.

    @ImPastey I ended up changing the tough skin mastery off, because apparently that mastery only works for neutral creeps. I took the two point out out of there and added one into Honor Guard and Perseverance. Thank you!
