IntroductionHello everyone, you may know me (IGN: Allorim) from my Volibear guide on solomid and lolpro and now I'm back to make a Renekton guide! This guide will be structured around the same way as I did with the Volibear guide so expect the same setup with different information. I've played LoL for around a year and a half starting in late season 1. I was 2.3k elo in S2 and I'm working on getting back to that elo for this season and hopefully making the top 100 players on the NA solo queue bracket. I've never been part of a major team (although I would like to), so I'm not that well known in the community, I'm no one famous :( If you add me as a friend I will most likely accepted, but know most the time I'm at full capacity friends and have to delete a lot of friends to keep up with people's questions. If you like you can contact me and I'll answer any questions you have, and it doesn't have to be specifically top lane, I'm well educated in all roles of this game :)
So like I said, I'm known as one of the best if not THE best Volibear in North America and Europe. But I can't just strictly put myself as only playing Volibear can I? Of course not, then no team would want me, so expect to see a lot of Voli, Renekton, Wukong, and Jarvan from me.
I Stream pretty often and have many recordings on Youtube with a variety of characters but of course, mainly Volibear, and I'm hoping to get some more Renekton videos in soon.
Here's some of my Renekton videos on YouTube. (Make sure to check them all out!)
(This one is just of some clips from one game, not much, but it's entertaining!)
(Be warned: My videos include me and my friends on skype, if you don't want to hear us ramble on about random stuff just mute. Also this is a full game so it's a long video)
Here's some achievements/stats I've made as a Bruiser top lane main! (Including 4th Bruiser and #1 Renekton on Elobuff!) p.s. Images will be updated the more I play
(as you can see I play a lot of bruisers)
Description and RoleRenekton is a tanky AD caster with an incredible early game and high burst. Now of course on Renekton your primary role is to deal damage but there is a line where you need to learn when to go tankier or when to go more damage, and hopefully this guide will show you how to build properly in all situations! Renekton is known throughout the game as one of the worst late game characters in the entire game, but I find that to be false; in fact I think his late game is JUST as good as his early game if you build right and spend fury wisely. Your main role as a Renekton player is to dominate your lane, dominate the mid game, and dominate the enemy squishies with your high burst damage.
- Insane damage
- High sustain and wave clear
- Double Dash (I love that game)
- Lane phase is ridiculously easy
- Easy get away from ganks
- Not easy to kite
- Very easy to farm
- Baits fights to your advantage
- Fury needs to charge up for a while
- Somewhat long CD's (cannot fight without them)
- Dash is a bit short
- W animation sucks (it suppresses yourself with the cast time)
This is the basic setup for Renekton going against another AD champion top, if it's an AP champion top then switch the armor in the defensive to the MR, basic stuff. The reason I pick this and not a 9/21/0 setup is because I believe Renekton should not hold back anything in lane phase. Going into the defensive tree is trading Renekton's insane damage for safe stats. I don't think this is worth it because for a Renekton to be successful in game, he needs to be farmed (not necessarily fed), and able to zone the enemy; which fortunately is his specialty.
If you were to go 9/21/0 take something like this
Now again I don't recommend this but if you were to go the safe path, this would be optimal. (Don't mind the name, even though it says Volibear it's what I use for Renek too.)
This is probably the best rune page you can get for Renekton in top lane. Everything you need is here, armor for AD champions, MR for AP champions, AD for scaling, and ARP for extra damage on all your skills. This helps you able to take more hits without dying, but at the same time; dominate the opponent with your exceptional damage. There's not much reason to bring other kinds of runes but sometimes it is better to go MS as I will show below.
So while you still have extra damage with the AD, this time you have move speed for when you go against those tricky champions like Nidalee and Teemo. I sometimes still go the ARP rune set but if I'm feeling like I won't be able to kill them, I would bring the MS page instead because it help you catch up to the really fast champions (especially if they bring movement speed runes too). So while this doesn't nearly do as much damage as the first set, it's good to be safe sometimes and bring this.
Why are these the best?
Ok so a lot of people argue that flash is better on Renekton, I happen to disagree with this. See, Renekton already has 1-2 dashes on him and in teamfights he needs to be all over the place. Ghost in my opinion is a more aggressive summoner rather than a defensive because most the time you use ghost to catch up to people, not run away. Of course it can be used defensively but that's not the point. My point is, Renekton already has such a great escape with E and R that flash isn't necessary.
So this is pretty obvious. Ignite is used for either extending a trade to the point of killing them, or using it to finish off an opponent running away. Renekton has such high burst that most the time you use this on an opponent who is about to get away, not necessarily in an extended fight, because Renekton's niche is a quick in and out fight rather than a extended trade.
If you are really picky about your gap closing then go ahead and bring flash. I didn't say it's a bad choice to bring flash, I just don't think it's optimal when it comes to looking at Renekton's kit. Of course it's always a good summoner if your E is on cooldown and you need to get over a wall. Or you can use it aggressively to chase down whoever your about to kill.
I wouldn't bring this unless you need to count on split pushing or you need to get back to lane because of constant harass (IE: Yorick). Teleport in general is a good summoner because you can push, but still be in the next fight as long as you have a place to teleport to. But a good player would know when to group with the team or to splitpush. Unless you have a specific comp or reason to bring teleport, I wouldn't recommend it.
Passive: Reign of Anger
Renekton gains 50% more Fury from all sources while below half health.
Kind of an "eh" passive. Not great but not terrible. However, it IS good when you are going to turn a fight because of the rapid fury regeneration. This passive and his R make a great combo because you are able to gain so much fury that you can all your skills infuriated (if you play it right)
Q: Cull The Meek
ACTIVE: Renekton deals physical damage to all enemies within range, gaining 5 Fury for each target hit and healing for 5% of the damage dealt up to a cap. Damage against champions heals quadruple the normal amount.
FURY BONUS: Cull the Meek deals 50% additional damage and heals for 10% of the damage dealt. The healing cap is also tripled.
Renekton's Q is his main sustain and main harass in the lane phase. It's fury bonus is insane; 50% bonus damage and increased healing? OOOOOH YEEAAAH! When fighting an enemy and you have your Q up, it is better to be fighting under an enemy minion wave because most of the time, your Q AoE will kill all the minions as well as heal you a bunch, allowing you to win trades more often. Even if it doesn't manage to kill all the minions, your E AoE should manage to finish them off. If you see the enemy farming at turret. Use Q to harass them as they try and last hit, but make sure to time it so you don't get shot at by the turret. Note that using Q in a minion wave (not fury bonus) will grant 5 fury for each minion hit, up to a cap of 25. So if you need to get more fury, don't be afraid to Q a wave every now and then. (when below 50% hp it will grant 7.5 fury every minion hit, this way you can get to fury bonus faster)
W: Ruthless Predator
ACTIVE: Renekton’s next basic attack will swing twice, dealing physical damage and stunning his target for 0.75 seconds. Each hit applies on-hit effects and grants Fury.
FURY BONUS: Ruthless Predator will strike his opponent 3 times and stun them for 1.5 seconds. Each hit still applies on-hit effects, but does not grant fury.
This is Renekton's highest damaging move in the lane phase when it has the fury bonus. Note that when you use this skill, it's shitty animation will keep you suppressed for around half the time they are stunned. Using this skill for quick trades is a must because most the time when you trade with Renekton, the enemy doesn't have enough time to efficiently trade back when they are stunned from W (then you just E away). With fury bonus this skill does a ridiculous amount of damage (around 210 at lvl 1) and will easily chunk the enemy, providing yourself zone control. Maxing this last is efficient because it's base damage doesn't increase enough to matter that much. In fact it's damage at lvl 1 beats your Q's damage at level 5 (depending on your AD, as it's a triple auto attack in one skill).
E: Slice and Dice
SLICE=ACTIVE: Renekton dashes forward, dealing physical damage to enemies he hits along the way. If he hits a target he gains the ability to use Dice for 4 seconds.
DICE= ACTIVE: Renekton dashes forward, dealing physical damage to enemies he hits along the way.
FURY BONUS: Dice deals 50% additional damage and shreds the armor of targets hit for 4 seconds.
An escape tool, extra dps, chasing power, armor shred, this skill has it all. And the best part is: you can use it twice! Or at least you can use it twice if you hit the first one (which most the time you should). This skill is what gives Renekton good trading power because the typical trade with Renekton involves: E in, Q for sustain and damage, W for a stun, and E out. The only problem with this skill is that your E fury bonus isn't so hot. The increased damage isn't compared to your Q and W, and the armor shred doesn't last long. It is a good choice to use the fury bonus when dueling a heavy armored tank, just to lower his armor for a W or Q. Your E goes over most walls, but sometimes it doesn't work so well and you facesmash a wall (which would be terrible because most of the time you bring ghost).
ACTIVE: Renekton empowers himself with dark energies for 15 seconds, enlarging his size and gaining extra health. For the duration, he deals magic damage per second to nearby enemies and generates 5 Fury per second.
This ultimate is so awesome. Like seriously I love this ultimate. You get a shit ton of HP (so imagine it like Lulu ultimate), you do a good amount of AoE magic damage (some people underestimate this damage: at level 1 it does 40 magic damage per second over 15 seconds. 600 base damage? I'd say that's pretty good). Now on top of that magic damage you gain TONS of fury. Damage Damage Damage. It's great for turning fights that the enemy thinks he can win, and it helps him with extended trades because of the magic damage. And of course that satisfying sound when you activate it: GRRAAWRAWRAWRAWRRAWLLL!!!!
Alright so getting W first is essential and almost always the best option. Getting W first allows your team a better invade (insane damage and a stun? I think I like it), and it allows you to trade better with your lane enemy due to it's stun and damage. The only time I would bring something else is if I needed to grab E to get away from a sudden invade or something; because you should always put your skill in at the moment you need to, not right away when the game starts.
Next, maxing Q is the best decision because it provides large wave clear, large damage, and a decent heal. This skill allows Renekton to be the aggressive big boy he is because an infuriated Q is scary damage and very hard to trade against (especially if the enemy is stunned and you have your 2nd E up).
Now this is when a lot of people have split decisions, some claim maxing W is better, some say maxing E is better. Now I'm going to go with E because your W does enough damage on it's own to keep it at level one, maxing it only provides a bit of extra damage (since most the damage doesn't come from it's base damage, it comes from your AD). Maxing E 2nd is best because it's your escape and lowering the CD on your escape is necessary to improve your chance of survival (not to mention that the damage is actually pretty good when you max it).
Overview on my items for Renekton
Renekton has a specific build that is optimal for him which you can find on many other bruisers such as Xin Zhao, Lee Sin, Pantheon, etc; the reason for this is because all of these bruiser are like Renekton: they scale off AD and they need that specific path to do optimal damage in late game, not just be a meat shield. Now going off this path of items is certainly not terrible, but it isn't what's best and I'm pretty sure we are going for what's best right now.
But Allorim! I want to build Renekton like my favorite champion Maokai and Darius! Stacking HP and Armor is so much better on these characters! Well no, it's not, and that's because when you stack tanky items with no source of damage on Renekton, your missing his main component; to be a HIGH damage off-tank. Without any AD items he has nothing to scale off of, all of his skills will be very weak and you might as well be chopped liver.
What do we look for in Renekton's items?
- Damage with additional effects
- Health with a damage element
- Damage with utility
Now what's all of this saying? We want DAMAGE DAMAGE DAMAGE yes that's right DAMAGE.
Now just to get this out of the way. I know a sustain meta is coming about, and no, Crystalline Flask is not a very good path. It's really not worth the amount of gold it takes early game to get it, I would rather get MS or Tanky stats.
Boots and 4 health potions is definitely a nice choice because it helps him with those "in and out" trades. Not only this but it helps with running away or chasing down a low HP enemy. Always go boots and 4 health potions against AP casters because the majority of the time they are ranged and you need the movement speed to catch up to them. Going Cloth Armor and 5 health potions is really only if you want to be safe, other than that there's not much to say. I would say only get it if you are worried about losing to Darius, Riven, Xin Zhao, or Pantheon.
Lately there has been a surge of popularity for top lane bruisers getting red elixir as a starting item. This start isn't bad, but I myself don't like it that much. I don't like how it doesn't give you a long term advantage and gives you less sustain (due to less pots). It's good for baits and really extended trades, but when I face someone with red elixir I know better than to fight them for a long period, and know not to get baited.
First Back Objectives
When you go back to base these are normally your first back items. Now at this point you want to have beaten the enemy and gotten a kill, or farmed enough to afford these kinds of items. Dorans Blade is always good because it provides you with a small bit of sustain, a good amount of attack damage, and a decent amount of health. I typically keep my Dorans Blades until I absolutely have to sell them because I want to make it fully worth the gold I put for it. The Brutalizer is an extremely powerful item on AD casters and is pretty much the core on all of them now. Gives a great amount of AD, ARP, and CDR for an efficient price.
Before going onto the next section, put yourself into the scenario that you have 1350 gold when you go back. The decision to make is either to get 2 Dorans or a Brutilizer. The smart thing and best thing to do is just to get the 2 Dorans first because even though it won't make you as powerful, you absolutely have to have sustain and vision in lane, it's much more worth it for yourself because then you won't die to ganks (or at least not easily).
This should be fairly obvious. Ninja Tabi against a heavy AD team (which is happening a lot lately) or Mercury Treads against a team with a good bit of CC/heavy magic damage dealers. The enchantments are also fairly obvious. I get homeguard most of the time but sometimes alacrity is better just so you can benefit from speed all over the place (although furor would be better in teamfights). But enchantments are really just based off opinion, no complete best option there.
Core Damage Items
These items are what make Renekton the scary beast he is and you should almost always get these first. The Black Cleaver ever since the update for S3 has had a HUGE increase in popularity and it's for a good reason too. The amount of damage it allows a AD caster to do is absolutely absurd. Flat ARP, % ARP, AD, Health? Sounds like a wet dream for Renekton! And that's the truth, getting this item early is essential for his damage and I would say get it every game you play. However, most of the time if I'm doing well in lane I would get Brutilizer and then rush Last Whisperer rather than rush BC (This is real important)! This is because Last Whisperer being rushed right after BC provides more AD and more ARP as fast as you can instead of delaying your maximum damage. Next up is The Bloodthirster. This item is if you are feeling real ballsy and you already have a main tank. But, if you have someone such as Lee Sin in jungle (who is not a main tank) you need to be more tanky and build more defensive items. The Bloodthirster (after your LW and BC) will absolutely destroy the enemy with +100 AD (makes all your skills scale increase by a significant amount).
Core Defensive Items
These are for AFTER your offensive items or before it if you really need it (if you are losing lane or desperately need a tank). Sunfire Cape.... *droooooools* God I love this item so much. Health, Damage, Armor. LOVE IT! Literally this thing makes you a tanky beast with even more damage. What I love about this is that it adds a lot of magic damage in conjunction with your ultimate. At rank 3 your ultimate does 100 dps and Sunfire Cape does 40 dps. 140 Magic Damage in an AOE + your regular skills? I like. Going onto Guardian Angel; this is necessary in all of your games because Renekton is a "balls deep" champion. For extra carry power get this immediately after your BC/Brut and LW. It's better to skip Sunfire Cape because if your in the middle of every single enemy just waiting for you to respawn, your team mates will be fighting them, and once you respawn you can procede to wreak havoc (YOUR FURY REGENERATES IN GUARDIAN ANGEL RES WHEN YOU DIE WITH YOUR ULT). Lastly, Frozen Mallet in my eyes is more of a tanky item than a DPS. The 700 health + your ult is just insane (Renekton always has a ton of health due to the ult). I don't build this as much just because I don't think it's as cost effective as other items, but I do get it when I need to be more tanky for the team.
The Considered Items
All of my considered items have one thing in common that is pretty easy to spot... That's right, they are all anti-mage items. The MR items are really lacking and these are the best choices for resistance. In my opinion the best out of all of these is Maw of Malmortius because the shield, damage, and MR is all good enough to make you tanky while still dealing enough damage to be that beast that you should be.
Items that you shouldn't build (that some Renekton's build)
Don't waste your Brutilizer on this item. Renekton is fast as it is, he does not need the MS or AS because his damage is primarily on skills, not auto attacks. It is much better of a choice just to go into Black Cleaver because it provides much more bang for your buck.
I mean... It's OK... But that's just it; it's OK and not good. What anyone should go for is items that are the absolute best, not just sub-par. Spirit Visage has mediocre effects on his Q heal and is really not worth it in the MR department. It's better just to go Maw of Malmortius or Runic Bulwark for this kind of stuff.
More info on this in the questions page
CDR is important on Renekton but not important enough for you to sacrifice your tankiness. This will help your damage minimally. It's much more worth it to go tanky and be able to survive longer for your cooldowns to come back up.
This is were Renekton shines bright like a diamond (elo... hue). His lane phase is just incredible because he has an enormous amount of harass and sustain. His trading is absolutely godlike (which I'll get to in another chapter) and very hard for an enemy to deal with. In lane phase your goal of the game is to dominate and zone the opponent as much as possible. When you have your fury over 50, go on the aggressive side because an infuriated attack on Renekton is an almost guaranteed trade winner. On Renekton it is very easy to kill before level 6. The amount of damage his W and Q do are insane and the enemy will run out of sustain (pots/flask) very quick if you keep up the harass. Take advantage of the fact that Renekton has a double dash; make sure you dash once to initiate the trade, and save the 2nd dash to get out of the trade before they can inflict as much damage as you did. The 2nd E lasts for 4 seconds and your whole combo should last around 2-3 seconds, so make sure to dash appropriately.
Getting Ganked/Camped and Helping With Ganks
First off, getting away from ganks on Renekton is an easy task, even junglers like Maokai can't stop you from getting away. A number of my videos on YouTube show me getting ganked and you can view them to visually see how I get away (but I'll describe it here). To get away from ANY gank as Renekton is very simple. Any top laners first instinct in a gank is to use any kind of escape they have to get away, Renekton's happens to be E. However, DO NOT use your E right away. Instead, wait for the enemy jungler to be in your path of E and then use it on him, Q for the heal when you can (when it's best), then use your 2nd E to get even further away from the enemy top lane (burn ghost if you have to but most of the time you don't).
I'll show you in the picture below what the scenario looks like.
As you can see it sets the distance very far from the enemy top and puts a fair amount of distance in between you and the ganker.
The role of Renekton stays the same: roll everything you see and touch. The most important target for you to focus on is an enemy AD carry, squishy AD caster, and AP carry. All of these kinds of characters are cannon fodder for you and are helpless toward your gap closer/stun and damage. Some may say that Renekton needs to peel and damage for the AD carry on your team, but really that's not the role you should be put in. YOU ARE RENEKTON! YOU ARE HERE TO BRING THE RUCKUS AND MESS PEOPLE UP! In a team fight it is sometimes difficult to channel fury, which a lot of people think of as the main problem with Renekton. The solution is simple. Before engaging in a team fight, let your team know not to engage until you have around 40 fury or so. This is easily obtained by using Q on a minion wave (which charges up to a cap of 25) and auto attacking a bit. Once you engage in a fight, your R should channel more than enough fury for you to use.
Another problem for people in this phase is deciding on which fury attack to use in a team fight. A quick recap: Q for AoE damage and sustain. W for massive single target damage and CC. E for armor penetration. I'll make a list of when to use/when not to use the skill in a team fight below (which should answer any questions).
Use Q when:
- Low on HP
- 2 or more people within the range of the AoE
Don't use Q when:
- Fighting a 250 armor monster
- High HP targets
- Only 1 person in range
Use W when:
- You absolutely have to destroy a target fast
- CCing an important target
Don't use W when:
- Under an enemy tower (seriously **** that animation)
Use E when:
- Dealing with high armor targets
Don't use E when:
- Your enemy is a low HP target
- Your enemy is a low armor target
- It would waste fury that you could use for W,Q (higher damaging skills)
This is a simple concept for all champions but I'll add it in the guide just in case. Your job as a top laner is to apply as much pressure on the enemy team as possible, without threatening yourself or doing a sloppy job and messing up your team.
Some simple tactics are:
- Push when your enemy is out of lane
- Come down from top lane for dragon (preferably without getting your top tower taken)
- Take down your lanes tower, then roam to take down other towers
It's not a hard concept to grasp but it seems many people aren't aware of this. This is such an important concept in a ranked match that if not everyone on your team knows this, one player can mess up an entire game (which hopefully you can carry). And to be honest, most the people who don't know this concept are top laners, so make sure you know what your doing when you go top lane!
Late Game (People underestimate this guy's late game)Oh god... What have I gotten myself into... Ok, I'm sure that I'm going to get a whole bunch of **** for saying this, but for real: Renekton's late game ISN'T BAD!! You hear that? It is NOT BAD. Sure it's not the creme of the crop kind of late game but it isn't the worst of the game. With the new items that came out, he is a monster with Last Whisperer and The Black Cleaver. The reason he was considered awful late game is because people would be building like a tank and not like a dps. If you don't build your LW/BC then yes, he is absolutely awful late game. But with those 2 items, he will shred peoples health like you wouldn't believe. And besides, what's bad about someone with 2 dashes, an AoE heal/damage, high single target burst, and with all that damage is tanky as all hell?
Another reason people assumed Renekton's late game is bad is because they didn't use their fury properly. I've already explained this in previous chapters but seriously, using your E fury is actually good in some circumstances. Most of the time it isn't but when you do use it in the right situation, it pays off big time.
I've heard one more argument about why people say Renekton's late game is bad and the argument is that it is way too hard to get fury in the late game. Again, I've already gone into this and getting fury is easy as pie with creeps and jungle minions, you just have to cooperate with your team and organize the engagements on the enemy team.
How to Correctly Combo
There are quite a few combos to use throughout the entire game:
IMPORTANT: Trades should almost always include one of your abilities to use fury!
In Lane Harass Combo
- (use this to go in) -> -> -> (use this to go out)
This is just your general harass combo in lane, what it does is apply the most damage toward the enemy, and get you out without taking that much in return. The other way to change this combo up is to use Q first so you can sustain. For example, I would use Q to bait a fight or if they enemy has a large minion wave I can heal off of.
The OH **** RUN AWAY Combo
- -> (try to use the fury on this) -> (x2 if you can)
Tower Diving Combo
- (let your ultimate charge up fury up to around 70, if you can save it and just auto attack to around 70) -> -> (use fury on this) -> Auto Attacks (for the 50% fury) -> ->
With your ultimate active during the dive you should have no problem using both Q and W infuriated. Typically you want to tower dive when the enemy least expects it and if they are around < 40% hp. With the combo and ignite you should be able to kill them and make it away just fine.
All Out 1v1 Balls Deep Combo
- Against tanks: -> -> (use the fury to remove their armor) -> -> (try to hit some minions for increased health gain)
This should be pretty obvious; tanks have a bunch of armor, armor is bad, use E fury to get rid of armor, proceed to wreck them in the trade when they have no armor and your skills are doing lots of damage.
- Against anyone else: -> (use this second because it would suck to use your ult first and just have them kite you away) -> (use the fury on this if you are going all out damage) -> (use the fury on this if you want to heal up on a minion wave) -> (use the 2nd one of this to do damage, not run away. This is an all out 1v1 after all)
Most everyone else you will be fighting is squishy enough to be using W and Q for damage rather than using E to burn through their armor. Besides, if you have Brutalizer you should be just fine in the early game anyway and by late game if you have BC and LW you should be doing great.
Harassing is generally simple with Renekton. As I showed above, the combos you can do will help harass when the lanes are not pushed out. The only other kind of harass is to harass the opponent at his/her tower. With Renekton this is a bit more difficult and can only be pulled of with Q (if you want to take no turret shots). Your Q range is high enough to safely stay away from them and not take a turret shot as long as you just time the turret shots. The trick is just to wait until they try and last hit caster minions (cannot be melee minions if you don't want to take damage) and when they go up to the minion Q and run away.
Literally the easiest thing ever. Farming on Renekton is just as easy as it is on someone like Mordekaiser. Being a manaless champion gives you free reign to use whatever skills you like on minions without punishment. Typically I tend to push my lane quite hard when I play Renekton (because escaping ganks is easy) so that the enemy misses last hits under turret. It's easy farming minions with 2 E's and a fury Q or even just a regular Q. Mid-Late game you should be able to one shot lanes with 1 Q.
Fooling the enemy!Renekton has several ways to bait out a fight to his advantage and cause the enemy to get overzealous and die because of it.
It's classic Renekton. Using your Ultimate to bait the enemy into fights isn't hard and it can result in you getting a kill. IMPORTANT: The only negative side to this is that it's risky using your ultimate last because in an extended 1v1 trade you typically want to use the ultimate to capsize on its damage.
The best time to use ultimate baits are if you are about to get dove under your own turret or baiting them into a bush (both implying you are below 30% hp or so and the enemy is cocky). The reason his ultimate baits so well is because the health gain is like a heal, it GRANTS you the 300-600hp rather than just letting you have the extra HP; so treat it like a Soraka W or something in that nature.
This is also quite simple but can result in you getting an extra kill. Let's say that the situation is that you and your enemy laner are finished trading but neither of you have killed each other (ignites and ultimates are blown). Simply just walk into full enemy minion wave, in comes the enemy laner, Q the entire wave as well as the enemy, get a **** ton of HP back, proceed to get kills.
Match Ups!Before I start: this match up list is also my counter pick section. Also, just because I say it is hard to beat X champion; that does not mean Renekton will always lose; with the right tactics you can beat anyone.
This list will include all top lanes that you might face top lane; no I won't include people like Ahri or someone that almost never goes top.
Difficulty is 1 being the easiest to 10 being the hardest.
- Very squishy
- Can AoE in the shroud
- Can stop a full combo with shroud
- Has high potential burst
Tips: Even at level 6, your trade is much stronger than her burst. Use your harass to your advantage. (fury Q's mostly)
- Easy to dodge his Q
- Your combo is much easier to land
- Better extended trade
- Silence is annoying as all hell
Tips: At later phases in laning he is very hard to kill. Try and kill him before he has time to heal off his passive. Also, if he goes to last hit, punish him with your combo.
- Your ultimate can save you from his
- Much better extended trade
- Once you use your E, if he catches you with his hook it's over
Tips: Attempt to kill him pre-6 because even with your ultimate, it is very difficult to survive his burst.
- Squishy, if you can land a combo she's in trouble
- Long range poke is very strong
- Early MR isn't Renekton's favorite
Tips: Just make sure not to use both your E's for damage. You always need to have an escape before you engage on Elise.
- She's squishy
- Her burst isn't quite as good as yours
- Weaker sustain
- Her fully extended trade is really good
- Her ultimate can dodge a Q (so don't waste it)
Tips: This is a real easy late. The only problem is her ultimate if you try and dive her. If you must dive, make sure you can kill her while she is stunned from your W.
- His harass no where near as strong as yours
- His Q isn't enough range to keep you from getting to him
- He can W your stun so while your freezing yourself from that dumbass animation he is free
Tips: Gangplank has good harass and regeneration. Make your harass match his and don't let him get ahead in HP or else he will zone you from your own sustain.
- His Q can't silence an already activated Renekton W
- Doesn't have the harass of Renekton
- Tanky as hell
- Early game can be scary
Tips: Activate your W before you fight, that way his Q can't silence it. Also use your range on Q to hit him before the full engage in lane. Constant harass makes his passive useless.
- Her E isn't as fast as your W
- Easy to escape her extended trade
- Squishy early game
- Her free tenacity messes with your W
Tips: Don't dive Irelia. Her sustain from her ultimate on top of her short CD stun makes it quite dangerous. If you need to dive, make sure you have enough health to survive.
- He has no sustain
- You can E out of his ult
- Decently safe harass
- Tanky with E passive
Tips: He can set up really dangerous ganks with his knock up and ultimate. Save your E as much as possible/ward as much as possible.
- His E doesn't stop the damage
- Easy to escape his trades
- If you mess up on escaping his stun, bad things
Tips: Attempt to avoid his 3 hit trade. If you see him activate his E randomly, that most likely means he will Q to you. All you need to do is E away.
- Cocky Jayce's will always lose
- Squishy if you can reach him
- Knock back annoying as ****
- Speed boost annoying as ****
- Ranged annoying as ****
Tips: If he gets overly confident and Q's in with his hammer form, prepare to destroy him with fury W. If he just stays back to harass all game. Wait for the opportunity when he gets too close to you (so you can E to him).
- Squishy, a fury W will hit him really hard
- It's not hard to stick by minions to reduce his Q damage
- Out sustain him
- His burst :(
- Jumps farther than you
Tips: Don't stay isolated. If you are isolated he will out trade you every time. Other than that, your combo will beat him every time.
- You can sustain just as much as him
- Annoying *** jumps
- He can easily survive your burst
- Has that Q->R->Q combo that wrecks you
Tips: Avoid getting hit by Q and you're safe. He's not hard to stalemate against, but he is hard to beat because of his disengage.
- Not enough damage to kill Renekton
- Hard to get fed off this lane
- His CC is ridiculous
Tips: Very early aggression works best, before he gets any kind of armor. If you can kill him early you will proceed to zone him all game.
- Lol @ lore
- Doesn't have much early game pressure
- Late game terror
- Wither is annoying as hell
Tips: Zoning him is easy, killing him is hard. His passive lifesteal will keep your aggression strategy from working. The best way to beat him is keep the lane in the middle, and only harass him if you can really chunk him.
- She's squishy, bursting her pre 6 is a must
- After level 6 it gets very hard to kill her
- Her heal out sustains your own
Tips: Pre-6 is your best friend when it comes to Nidalee. If the enemy gets to zealous and goes for back line creeps, E to her and punish.
- When he got nerfed, he got nerfed hard
- True damage burst
- Ignores your W
- Passively tanky, makes it hard to kill him
- Hard to escape/chase
Tips: Constant Q harass works best against Olaf. If he uses his ultimate your W is useless. Just use fury Q's.
- Cannot block a fury Q
- No sustain
- Your W doesn't like his shield
- He can roam really well
- High harass
Tips: Don't let him harass you without you harassing him back. If you let him Q you without you doing anything back, he will zone you for the entire lane phase.
- Poppy isn't a threat to you
- Your damage consists of burst, her passive counters that
- Pretty much a boring farm lane unless you can really manage to harass all game
Tips: Don't get baited into a tower dive because more than half the time they don't go well. If you tower dive, be sure to have ignite.
- Severely nerfed, his burst not on par to yours
- His W has good sustain and armor, try not to burst when he uses it (wait for the armor to ware off)
Tips: Another lane where you shouldn't let him harass you with harassing back. Don't let him out sustain you, use your fury on Q for sustain.
- She can't burst you well
- You out sustain her
- Your E can get you out of most situations
- Her level 6 might be a bit better (harass her before you engage on a full 1v1)
Tips: Watch out for her level 2. Wait until later levels to engage on her because she has almost as much, if not more early game damage than you.
- Somewhat squishy
- No real escape against Renekton
- Tons of constant damage (don't go too aggressive and get yourself killed)
- All AP damage - not enough MR
- A good harassing Rumble is terrifying
Tips: Another lane where if Rumble harasses you, you MUST harass back. The only problem is your cooldowns are so much higher than his, so trades will be difficult to keep up.
- His snare isn't that effective vs your E
- Losing to him makes him a late game hyper carry
Tips: Bait his W so you can E toward him and punish.
- He cannot kill you
- Your sustain > his
- It's hard to kill him
- Getting taunted under turret sucks
Tips: For this lane, the best thing to do is try and kill him before he can buy any health or armor. Once he gets some kind of tanky item, your potential to kill him goes way down. If he happens to get tanky items in lane, just try to constantly harass or farm.
- His pre 6 is much worse than yours
- Hard to kill
- Magic damage is no fun
- Annoying pest all game
Tips: Another lane that's like Shen. You just have to attempt to kill him before he gets tanky items. The only problem is that singed does deceptive amounts of damage. Watch were you walk and make sure not to get baited.
- Satisfying to kill
- Squishy as hell
- All Teemo's are cocky, take advantage of this
- Fast, fast, fast
Tips: Pretty easy lane. If he gets too close and tries to CS, E to him, combo him and then E away (or continue to stick on him if you are faster).
- No burst
- Little sustain
- Trades bad unless he has fury
- His ultimate can save him from most situations (but he will be underfarmed)
Tips: Your harass is always better and he has almost no sticking power to stay on you to crit. Harass him as much as possible because there is very little he can do back.
- Udyr cannot catch up to you
- Lacks any kind of team fights presence
- Hard to kill
- His Q trades are absolutely terrifying
- He IS an anti-melee
Tips: His Q damage is surprisingly large so don't try to extend any trades with Udyr. The best way to win is to farm or get jungle help. If anything, your farming will make you a bigger threat than him.
- She's squishy
- Not a threat when you get your ultimate
- Her early burst can be scary (only happened to me once)
Tips: Try to avoid her beginning trades because her W and E stack up pretty quickly and add up to a pretty high burst. The way to win vs Vi is by waiting until level 6.
- Easy to catch up to
- You out damage him easily
- Has higher sustain
- Farms all game
Tips: With Vlad having such short range you should have no problem being able to E to him and harass him. While Vlad has a lot of sustain, you can match it.
- Your burst is higher than his
- Escapes semi easily
- Has trouble getting out once he goes in
- Volibear has real scary trades
Tips: Avoid getting too caught up in any trade beyond level 6. Volibear's continued dps with his ultimate normally ends with him getting a kill.
- His mana costs are: LOL
- Next to no damage
- Tower diving is hrad
- His sustain is good if he has spare mana
Tips: Continued harass causes Warwick to go oom. And an oom Warwick is useless. The only problem with this lane is if he gets ganked early on.
- Has trouble escaping Renekton
- Free E proc from his clone
- Wukong has ridiculous level 6 burst
Tips: Avoid extended trades at really early levels. Once you hit 6 it gets easy. Wukong is a burst reliant champion when it comes to getting kills in lane (most of the time). Your ult and sustain counters that.
- Easy to beat once you gained dominance of the lane
- Xin's early Q burst hurts like hell
- Has % health damage
Tips: Another champion that hurts if you get too caught up in a trade. He has great sustain, CC, and damage early game. The way to win is by getting to level 6 first.
- Can heal/kill the ghouls fast
- Yorick is squishy with no ghouls
- He out sustains you if you get killed early on
- Harassing monster
Tips: The easiest way to win vs Yorick is by hitting all his ghouls with a Q and then keep trading. Yorick with no ghouls does very little damage and isn't very tanky.
Answering Questions PageQ: After having Sunfire and Frozen, should I consider build Atma's?
A: Atmas I think is worth it if you build those 2 items. If you only build one major health item don't get the item. But with those 2 large health gaining items, you get around 45 AD which helps a ton with your scaling.
Q: I did good in my lane, mid and bot lost, and I cant easily dive the enemy adc in teamfights . What can I do?
A: You just have to try your best. If your fed enough you need to down the tower earlier and start helping other lanes to get them caught up. Instead of team fighting (when your losing) try and pick off the enemies who are by themselves.
Q: According to your matchup list, Renekton only stomps a few underplayed champions in lane and loses/goes even with most of the popular ones. If that's the case, given that his lategame isn't anything special, why would you pick him over the rest of the top laners in the game?
A: My match up list isn't made on difficulty of winning the lane as much as it is difficulty of getting kills off the lane. Overall, Renekton very rarely loses lane, even to those he is countered by, the list puts those tanky/hard to kill people on higher levels because Renekton should be able to zone/kill everyone, it's just harder with some people. Even against Olaf I've been fed out of my mind, but it's not easy to kill Olaf (and he has good damage). I pick him over others because he has potential to beat everyone in the lane, even if he gets countered.
Q: Why you don't take ad marks and ad quints at the same time?
A: I feel like armor penetration is more worth it. While AD is great and all, you want maximum damage with armor penetration, not scaling with AD. Besides, I feel like full AD page is more of an ADC thing, because they auto for their damage, Renekton uses skills.
Q: What do u think about building phage early game?
A: It's decent against people like Kennen or Teemo. If the person is so mobile that you need the extra help getting to them than I'd say go ahead and buy it. If not just get Brutilizer.
Q: Nowadays people like to stack health before armor. Wouldn't BT instead of LW be better after BC??
A: In some cases yes, but most likely that health will come from Sunfire Cape or Warmogs + X Armor item. If you want to rush BT then you would have to be very fed. I get LW before BT because I find it more cost efficient for faster carrying power.
Q: What do you think about take a Ravenous Hydra instead of a BT?
A: Ravenous Hydra is a great damage item but the only problem is it's expensive as all hell and Renekton normally doesn't auto attack for it's cleave bonus. I'm not sure, but I think the cleave works with W, that's nice and all but really it's too much gold for something that won't be nearly as effective as BT. None the less it still does a ton of damage, I can see it working.
Q: How is Darius 8?
A: His Q is a larger radius than yours, meaning he has safer harass. He deals incredible early game damage, he's fast, and to top it off he's tanky. Your ultimate can save yourself from his but we are looking to get fed here, not to survive. And it's hard getting fed off a Darius.
Q: What about Atma's Impaler?
A: I find this item to be effective on people who auto attack more. It's not bad and it is pretty efficient if you have multiple health items. Say you have Frozen Mallet, Sunfire Cape, and even a Warmogs. Then by all means go Atma's and make use of the health.
Q: What do you think about building rene "meat shield", i.e. stacking hp and building atmas,if you lose lane or are against a lane hard to get fed in?
A: This is optimal and I've done it before. The only reason I don't build full tank Renekton is because I feel that the damage is needed for the carrying power most people are looking for. However, if you do happen to lose lane. Warmogs, Frozen Mallet, any large HP item is great because he has a pretty high amount of base damage anyway.
Q: I've seen Wickd building BotRK on rene, so what do you think about it ? Seems to synergize well with w.
A: Every on hit effect item works pretty well with his W. I don't like BotRK because I feel it's more based on auto attacking. We can compare it to BT. BT has far superior amounts of AD, and BotRK does not. While BotRK has an active that does damage, BT outputs a larger amount of damage (if you have full stacks, which you should).
Q: What are your thoughts on Kayle as counter to Renekton?
A: She's a decent counter but I don't recall ever losing to one myself. The key to beating Kayle with all melee characters on top lane is to bait out the CD on her E. Right when she loses her range, use whatever gap closer you have to get to her and destroy her in the trade. It's all about timing on her Q and E.
Q: How is Spirit Visage not good on Renekton?
A: Ok the big question I've been getting. I know I know, pros have been getting this and it's now considered really good on him. But to be honest, I don't see the point of getting this item over more HP items. The CDR? It's great, but really I just don't find it worth it. I feel that if you were going to be facing a larger AP team just get more health with a Frozen Mallet or Warmogs, and/or buy a MoM. People really do underestimate MoM, it's a really good item for any AP counter. I feel like the shield at the end is more than what SV will heal and will protect you with the MR.
