IntroductionHi there, I go by the IGN TheCrashLander and I enjoy spamming Ezreal in Solo Q ranked, and in normals. My current elo has peeked at 2109 while my smurf sits at around 1800. Ezreal has been hands down my favorite champion to play for almost the entire year and a half and I am making this guide to help better my own playstyle and skill as well as help any of those who would like to learn about this champion.
He has constantly remained the one champion in the game that I could never get tired of because of his versatility in most team comps. You can always bet that Ezreal will be a safe pick for laning phase and overall with his biggest shortcoming being his low auto attack range making it dangerous to to deal damage like a normal AD carry would as opposed to combining his abilities to create damage.
Ezreal has gone through much during his time in the league. From being over powered to underpowered to underplayed to overplayed, one thing has remained a constant. Like every other champion and maybe even more so, Ezreal requires skill to play well and in the right hands, can make people cry. Do not be mistaken however, Ezreal is not a late game AD carry and you will get raged at on occasion during games that drag out and you find your damage output unable to match that of per say Vayne or Corki if your laning phase was less than optimal. But Ezreal shines brightest during the laning phase and mid game and everyone should remember this.
MasteriesAt the moment there are multiple mastery builds you can go which almost always involve 21 into the offensive tree.
This spec is optimal because the 3 extra mana regeneration early levels and throughout the game is quite helpful, especially if you run anything other than mana regeneration blues. The Buff duration mastery is also helpful for those lucky jungler kills in laning phase or the drawn out team fights since Ezreal with either or both buffs is ridiculously powerful.
I've been running this every now and then with mana regeneration blues due to Ezreal's aggressive nature early game. The extra health and armor/magic resist bonus enables Ezreal to tough out a good deal more damage in early game trades but runs short on mana much more quickly than running 9 into utility.
Offensive Tree Explanation:
After the change to the deadliness mastery which changed it from critical strike chance to a pitiful amount of AD per level, I've found I prefer the cooldown reduction and magic penetration from Sorcery and Arcane Knowledge over the 10% extra critical damage mastery since Ezreal relies more on his spells than other AD Carries which all deal a certain amount of magic damage. However, if you were to go the Infinity's Edge Phantom Dancers build, 10% crit damage is definitely an option.
RunesThere are many different sets of runes that you can run on Ezreal like any AD carry and most are situational.
Explanation: 15 AD for harass and last hitting directly benefiting his Q at a 1:1 AD ratio makes this a strong choice with armor seals being a necessity as an AD carry for trades and jungler ganks. Magic Resist seals aren't necessary but the enemy supports will sometimes take matters into their own hands if their AD is incompetent and kill you by themselves if you don't run MR.
Explanation: Everyone runs armor including their enemy AD carry unless he has an illness. Ezreal is a very early/mid game AD and running armor penetration can help win trades bottom lane to snow ball after the first couple of levels.
-Marks: Armor Pen or Flat Attack Damage marks are both viable but Ezreal shines brightest early game, and mid game. With Flat Ad Marks coupled with Quints, Ezreals Mystic Shot does an extra 16 damage plus the extra auto attack buff from his passive which makes it difficult to duel with him early game.
-Seals: With the current meta, poke and kill lanes are the most often seen which is why Armor seals are a necessity.
-Glyphs: Like I previously stated, poke and kill lanes are the most frequently seen lanes bottom. Flat MR blues really help against aggressive laning partners like Sona and Nunu. Mana Regen blues also work great on Ezreal due to the amount of spam you find yourself doing.
-Quints: Flat AD are my first choice and only choice. Some people prefer Health Quints over AD but I think AD flats are just too good.
Passive: Rising Spell Force
Hitting a target with any of Ezreal's abilities increases his attack speed by 10% for 6 seconds (Max Stacks: 5).
Explanation:This skill is what makes Ezreal so a strong dueler early game. Your ability to stack a couple of these passives before an exchange can be the difference between winning or losing it.
Q: Mystic Shot
Ezreal fires a bolt of energy dealing 40 / 65 / 90 / 115 / 140 plus 110% of his attack damage and 20% of his ability power as physical damage (applies on-hit effects).
Ezreal's cooldowns are reduced by 1 second if Mystic Shot hits a target.
/ 35 / 40 / 45 / 50mana
Explanation:Like said by so many others, Ezreal's bread and butter skill. With armor penetration at early levels this ability has potential to completely wreck someones health and on top of that it reduces all of his cooldowns by one second if it connects with anything. This can lead to some pretty crazy plays that I cannot really describe in words but those who play Ezreal a lot understand.
W: Essence Flux
Ezreal fires a wave of energy that damages all enemy champions it passes through for 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+60% of ability power). Affected ally and enemy champions have their attack speed respectively hasted or slowed by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 5 seconds.
Cost 60/70/80/90/100 mana
Explanation:Some opt to leave this skill un leveled until late game because it has a tendency to consume ALL of your mana but I believe a well timed W coupled with your passive early game can win you exchanges as well. (Ex. 4 stacks of passive = 40% increased attack speed + level 1 Essence Flux = 20% decreased Attack Speed which is quite the advantage.) Although lately, against AD Carries such as Kog Maw and Ashe, who rely heavily on auto attacks for the majority of their trades in lane, with the recent mana cost reduction to essence flux, I have found it viable to put a couple points into it for more consistent harass since it passes through minions and does not create aggro unlike mystic shot.
E: Arcane Shift
Ezreal teleports to a target nearby location and fires a homing arrow at the nearest enemy unit dealing 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 / 280 (+75% of ability power) magic damage.
Explanation:Arguably the best AD carry escape in the game because it does not have a cast time, ( meaning most of the time you can't get pulled or grabbed out of it but sometimes unluckily you can.) this skill is like having another flash that's better than the summoner spell because you can hop over larger walls. Needless to say most of the time you will be maxing this out second.
R: Trueshot Barrage
Ezreal channels for 1 second to fire a barrage of missiles dealing 350 / 500 / 650 (+90% of ability power and +1 per bonus attack damage) magic damage to each unit it passes through. However, it deals 8% less damage for each unit it hits (Minimum 30%).
Cooldown 80 seconds
Cost 150 mana
Explanation:Like Ashe Arrow with more damage and no CC this skill can lead to some pretty funny snipes across the map as well as a strong wave clearer. Coupled with his Q's cooldown reduction on hit and blue buff you can basically cut the cooldown of this ability in half which is quite powerful.
Build Order 1:
The skilling order is to maximize damage output and cooldown reduction on Ezreal's Q which is what makes him unique. This skilling order is pretty common to most guides with the exception that I put one point into my W at level 4 always. Reason being besides the fact that if you hit an enemy champion with it, another stack is added to your passive, your W can increase your chances of winning in duals with enemy AD carries because of the Attack Speed buff it gives. Don't get me wrong, it sucks up mana like no other so it isn't something to be spamming as harass but it's something to think about getting if you're duo laning bot lane with support against another AD-support combo.
Explanation:Although less damage than persay Infinity's Edge + Phantom Dancer, this build provides more sustain and utility through means of greater life steal, and 25% slow proc, and the Sheen proc + Ability power which maximizes the effectiveness of his abilities which all have ability power ratios.
Infinity's Edge Build:
Explanation: Standard AD carry build which helps maximize Ezreal's Auto Attack damage output synergizing well with his passive however leaving him more vulnerable because his auto range is so short. Completely different play style from the Trinity Build. I really don't like this build because I don't think that Ezreal should be played in the same style as someone like Caitlyn home capitalizes immensely off exclusively her auto attacks. Ezreal performs more like a Hybrid between AD Carry and AD Castor maximizing his capacity for damage by weaving his abilities in between his auto attacks.
Blade of the Ruined King:
Explanation: Although quite pricey as of late due to nerfs that were entirely necessary Blade of the Ruined King is by far one of any AD champion's greatest pick-ups. It gives you literally everything and more. Last Whisper just insures that the everything and more continues to provide through the late game.
Personal Preferences: At the moment Sheen is probably by far my favorite laning phase item on Ezreal. Providing mana, a minor amount of ap and an extra kick in the throat to the end of your mystic shots, Sheen is probably the most cost-effective item you could get on Ezreal especially after the buff to its pricing (1200 from 1260).
Item ExplanationsViable Boots Options:
- Sometimes it can be best to buy these first if the bot lane is running AP + Support or even if you see that their team in general has a lot of cc. Usually trade in my Berserkers late game for these since I have usually built up enough attack speed with other items.
- Usually my upgrade of choice. The attack speed gained compliments Ezreal's passive quite well. Enables more consistent last hits under tower and more trades ending in your favor when coupled with the W abilities Attack Speed Debuff.
- Not something I find I procure particularly often, however if going the Brutalizer path, the cooldown reductions add up quite well which enables you to spam the hell out of your abilities. Especially with Soraka.
- Necessary if tanks prioritize armor items like , or . As late game draws near, those tanks are going to start to be pretty damn hard to kill. Although those squishies will still be squishy, why not buy an item that can help take down tanks faster while dealing even more damage to the squishy people that are trying to rape you? This item is relatively cheap compared to other items as well coming out to be around 2200 in its finished state.
- All around strong item that synergizes well with Ezreal's passive although 600 or so gold more than Last Whisper and providing slightly less armor reduction to tankier targets than .
- Although I wouldn't recommend this conventionally if you're really trying to win, but if you want to have fun and build a little bit of hybrid to play off of your potential Trinity Force this item is the one to get. This item coupled with your passive provides amazing attack speed as well as a decent amount of ability power with full stacks not to mention burst sustain in those about-to-get-reKt by three of the enemy team's olympic-class divers.
- Banshee's Veil provides a bigger mana pool by which to draw upon to spam more abilities while also providing a shield and a bigger health pool which are two things that Ezreal can benefit immensely from. Pretty expensive though when compared to .
- If you feel as if you have too much balls to buy a whimpy item like Quick Silver Sash that doesn't give you any offensive stats this might be the item for you. Provides a small shield as well as extra damage output and due to a new change can even be upgraded to an even stronger item Maw of Malmortious.
Early GameLaning Phase:The amazing thing about Ezreal is that you can choose whether to play passively and farm without fear or play aggressively and be able to get away with it most of the time. This however depends largely on your ability to hit Mystic Shots and time your auto attack exchanges. Be aware however that Ezreal's mid to late game presence largely depends on how much pressure he can place on the other AD in laning phase unlike AD carries like Vayne who can be expected to lose lane and still be able to carry the game. Keep in mind that you must be sure to conserve your mana in some cases because a full Q,W,E combo is a huge drain and it's really easy to spam your Q while last hitting minions even if a simple auto attack would suffice.
With the recent changes to Ezreal's mana costs, maxing Essence Flux has become a more than viable option. The magic damage dealt coupled with the attack speed buff (to you and allies) and debuff (to your opponents) is extremely effective and becomes even better when coupled with sheen.
Mid GameAside from early game, Mid game is where Ezreal really shines. If mana is available, dragons can be acquired very quickly and his mid game poke is very strong. However make sure to auto attack because Ezreal is an AD carry at heart which means AUTOATTACK. This is also an opportune time to split push since mid game Ezreal has very strong dueling potential and two flashes which can be used to hop over not one, but TWO walls! Isn't that op?
Late GameLate game you will mostly be the target of the enemy bruisers due to how close you must get to auto attack so remember when attempting to kite in team fights, try to stay near walls because arcane shift will become your best friend in these cases. Also, most tanks will have built up much resist that Last Whisper will become a necessity.
Position yourself towards the rear of your team seeing as you have really long range poke and any smart bruiser/tank will dart straight towards you in team fights so you're going to want to make sure to auto-attack kite and not just run away so you can wear down the people chasing you and eventually kill them.
Final CommentsI will be updating this guide whenever I find other things that I may find educational or different than I have written here. Once I figure out how, I will post a video of some gameplay highlighting key aspects that make Ezreal the force that he is. Feel free to ask questions as well.
